My time as a Head Start Teacher required a lot of training and preparation. I went to this training center for training in CPR, safety and first aid, nutrition and many other subjects. As added information I want those to know about the program. Head Start is a government program that provides early childhood education, health, nutrition, and parent services to low-income children and their families. It is the oldest and largest program of its kind.The program's services and resources are designed to foster stable family relationships, enhance children's physical and emotional well-being, and establish an environment to develop strong cognitive skills. A child's transition from preschool to elementary school imposes a variety of developmental challenges that include requiring the children to engage successfully with their peers outside the family network, adjust to the space of a classroom, and meet the expectations of a school setting. As a Head Start Teacher I made home visits and also was involved with other aspects of the children's well being like nutrition and basic reading writing and math. I really enjoyed taking the class on field trips to give them the opportunity to visit places like the zoo, fire station, library and more. Naturally we had to raise our own funds to take them on field trips. That's how I met my future husband at a fundraiser. My experience with Head Start was a great time in my life. Maybe you can visit a classroom and do some volunteer activities. The families and teachers need all the help they can get. When I moved back to NYC I attended this center hoping to revive my career with Head Start. I received all of my certificates once again. I should've known what to expect when the instructor informed us that he would be showing up 30 minutes late then proceeded to berate another student over the phone who also would now be late due to the change in schedule. However, I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt since I had just met him. That all changed though when we started the class and he unprofessionally yells at my classmate for being unsure of an answer. We thought we came to learn but the teacher made it clear we were there to be his personal outlet for whatever he was going through. Do not use this company. Unprofessional, scammy, and rude. One - I paid for an ACLS renewal course. Afterwards, they charged me an EXTRA $65 to actually obtain the card. Two - The instructor who taught the ACLS recertification course was unorganized and didn't know what she was talking about. She was constantly flipping through the ACLS manual and stumbled her way through the whole in-person portion. Waste of time for everybody. So many choices out there - use another company. read more

I've attended multiple cpr classes throughout my profession and the BLS class with Josephine at HeartStart was the best of all of them. Josephine, was an amazing, thorough and engaging instructor. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. THEY ARE UNPROFESSIONAL, RUDE AND MONEY HUNGRY. I only gave one star because I could not leave it blank. They don't deserve any stars. Owner and staff are rude and very unprofessional. We prepaid for staff to be trained. Someone at the last minute could not attend. Another employee was sent in their place. AFTER the training was done, they wanted us to PAY for another person. We refused to pay additional money because they already provided the training and the training was pre-paid already. They refused to issue her CPR/BLS card. And in the process, they chose to be extremely rude and dismissive about it. I spoke to the owner...he clearly got away with being rude with others because he doesn't even try to be professional or understanding. He just wanted his money. Do NOT give them your business. If you need to renew or get your BLS certification, this is the place to do it. You're usually out earlier than the actual scheduled time. The instructor does give you the option to stay the whole time. You learn a lot and it is straight to the point. read more

Whatever you do, do NOT take any of their classes. I am actually appalled by this company. They canceled my original PALS class in New York City 12 hours before because the instructor "called out." They rescheduled me for another date due to the inconvenience and now they just canceled that class for the exact same reason. They do not respect how important having these certifications, on time, are for healthcare professionals. Their customer service is extremely rude and unhelpful. Did my original ACLS and BLS training here. Very quick and painless, we were out earlier than expected and even had time to shoot the breeze. Our instructor was very knowledgeable and will go at the pace you want and will answer questions that come up. There were 3 people in the class which made things move quicker as well. Note that you can get your textbook during class, if you try to come before you have to call to see if there's anyone in because their hours online is only when their main office is open and they will pick up your call but not necessarily when there's someone at the Manhattan location. read more

Terrible business practice, they call an hour before your class to reschedule and lie about the reason- they give a BS excuse like building maintainence but really, it's so they can shove as many students into one class as possible. Why bother letting people sign up for time slots you won't honor? Instructors are not knowledgeable. I won't be returning here to renew. Get your certification literally anywhere else. read more

Disclaimer: this review may only reflect their Sunday operations. The first time I took a course, it went fine. The instructor was on time and I learned a lot from the course. It was good enough that two years later, I signed up for another course. However, this is where everything went horribly. I won't get into details, but this company has a serious LACK of communication and organization. It's horrible enough that 1- they cancel a course on the very day 15 minutes before it started due to an internal communication issue 2- hire instructors who arrive almost 1 hour later than scheduled. Yes, train troubles are very common in NYC, but you would think as a company who makes "millions" in a year, they could sponsor an uber or lyft ride so that the instructor can show up on time. NOPE. Late. Wasted everyone's time. Bottom line, find a different company who doesn't just eat your money and provide terrible service. read more

I found out that I purchased the wrong course once I arrived that morning to take it. So before we started, I asked the instructor if he would be able to give me the price difference back and he said he wouldn't be able to and told me to contact the head office in Long Island. So I call before class starts...explaining the situation to Jorge the owner...having to repeat myself multiple times. Not only was he not willing to assist me, he was very rude and hung up on me. All the owner cares about is getting your money! No care for the people that are helping keep you in business! I made a very last minute (read: booked at 11:38pm the night before) registration for the BLS certification. I ended up being the only person that day, which allowed meant the class ended much earlier than I expected since I didn't have to wait on anyone else. My instructor, Carissa, was extremely knowledgeable and stopped every now and then to give me advice and tips on how to do a better job, and also regularly asked me if I was confused on anything. I've used Heartstart a number of times and it is always efficient and appropriate to my experience. The only negative is the cost. PALS is very expensive. But yesterday I had the pleasure of my instructor~Marnie~who was kind, understanding, realistic is likely the most important attribute. I really enjoyed the BLS course here, the instructor made everything very clear and explained things with deep thoroughness. She made the learning experience great and provided me with all the tools I needed to succeed in the course. It's great that the book gets included with class. TAKE THIS CLASS AT YOUR OWN RISK. Last year, I put a down payment and registered for the PALS course. It was a rainy day and was a pain to wake up early and get to class. Once I arrived the doors were locked, and the administrator said that the building heat was off so the class was cancelled. She told me to call her directly to reschedule but when I did, she avoided my calls for two days only to act rudely and tell me that the "policy" was to reschedule within 60 days, which she didn't tell me at the time. I told her it wasn't my fault that her business can't get it together to heat up its rooms but then she abruptly ended the conversation. read more
