Standing in line, you'll hear regulars boasting about the dishes they have loved and would love to try. The menu can be a little overwhelming at first, but there are so many tasty options that there's no way you can go wrong! The Ethiopian Style breakfast was spicy in all the right ways and packed with potatoes, eggs, and veggies. Plus you get some delicious injera to help balance the rich flavors out! Don't even get me started on the portions, which are massive and left me full before even finishing. That's quite a feat considering that I have a bottomless stomach. And the special sauce! What was once viewed as a harmful movement of anti-establishment and apparent hate has exploded into a generation-defying and unifying banner of mutual understanding and respect. So what's my point? In a way, hip hop itself shouldn't work. In a world consumed by both visible and invisible lines of separation, bringing together cultures to break bread, love and cry with doesn't make sense. If we were living according to the way our commander in chief wanted, we would all be living and eating amongst people of our own ethnicity in a country of hapless uniformity and segregation; yet, here I am. An Asian male, sitting with my equally Asian girlfriend, at an unabashedly proud Ethiopian restaurant, eating an American style breakfast. Everything about this screams hip-hop. The first thing you see when you walk in is an interesting array of decorations: Christmas lights lazily strewn about black walls highlight a chalk-written menu that looks as if it were written by a second grader. The menu is disjointed as you have to turn around to see the full options, but for some reason it just works. I quickly ordered veggie omelette. I was blown away after the first bite. As the son of a deli owner, I've grown up eating my fair share of every style of egg and breakfast combination imaginable. What I had in my omelette was a new twist of an old classic. The house special green sauce perfectly compliments the egg and veggies with a firey yet palatable kick of ethnic flavor. We sat outside next to a row of remodeled sinks that have been converted into single dining tables. The rustic, urban charm of the restaurant made the food taste exponentially better as I was able to appreciate the thought, and culture of what I was being served as a whole. I know, it's strange to hear how this restaurant reminded me of culture and hip-hop's influence on it. But everything, from the clashing decor to the tantalizingly unique spin on American breakfast can't help but make me reflect on that idea. It seems to be family owned by Ethiopians and they serve authentic Ethiopian food and some American meals as well. I went here for breakfast and just ordered pancakes just to try it out but I totally wish I had the Ethiopian buffet breakfast. Regardless you will get good food either way. My husband and I came here for a rare late lunch date (kids still in school and he had early release from work = a scheduling miracle!) to see what all the rave reviews were about. Heat Da Spot is a great example to follow the old adage's advice to never judge a book by it's cover (or somewhat strange title). It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the inside instantly reminded me of my favorite cozy coffee shop in Chicago where I used to pull all-nighters in my college days. Mismatched furniture, funky colors, and delicious aromas from the kitchen give Heat Da Spot a real comfy and cozy vibe. It is as unpretentious a place as you can find in DC, which certainly adds to its charm. There were several people working when we arrived but I don't think I'd personally pick this spot for teleworking. The music was too loud and energetic for me (great music for enjoying a meal, but not my speed if I need to get stuff done). My chai latte was perfectly sweet and I was quite happy with it. My husband ordered an iced herbal tea which came out incredibly sweetened. He didn't specify unsweetened, and wasn't expecting a free swap, but the employees graciously took it back and gave him a new one without complaint. (The employees are completely worth the highest of ratings). So fair warning, the drinks come SWEET. I opted for the Ethiopian breakfast (egg scramble with injera) and somehow managed to eat the entire plate (I'm talking huuuuuuge serving sizes here). My husband's club sandwich was tasty and satisfying overall but not worth 5 stars (super tall and cut in a way that made it hard to eat, wilted lettuce, nothing to make it really stand out from your average club sandwich). I've read about the breakfast sandwiches made from hash brown buns and I am DEFINITELY coming back to try those! Tips: it gets super crowded on the weekend and the spot is about the size of a large master bathroom, so unless its warm and the patio is open, be ready to either wait for a table or get your order to go.
