I am new in town (and a graduate student) and called to book a one-off cleaning since I am due. Even though it has only been six months since my last full exam the receptionist demanded I pay for a full exam and set of xrays. I find this to be outrageous. I am a student, with recent X-rays from my old (recently retired and hard to reach) dentist who wants a cleaning to maintain my oral health. Being refused this simple service is humiliating and will not, obviously, improve my oral health by making me delay routine care because of prohibitively expensive and unnecessary X-rays. Unless you're some corporate pasha with lush dental insurance I guess you and I are stuck at county or using dubious groupons to try and care for ourselves. This place made me feel sick. read more

One of the most traumatic moments of my adult life so far, more traumatic than when I fell of that cliff while snowboarding, more traumatic even than when I fell off that second cliff while bouldering, was being told that I had cavities. What? I haven't had a cavity since I got my adult teeth and I thought I was immune to them. I guess my bad habits finally caught up to me. Of course, the dentist tried to make me feel better by telling me that everyone gets them as they get older. Oddly, that didn't make me feel much better. Nor did it make me feel better when she told me the preventative sealents I had gotten years ago were probably the cause of said cavities. Evidentally, they can become loose, allowing bacteria to become trapped under them and no amount of brushing will remove the vile bacteria afterwards. Yesterday I went in to have the cavities filled. I didn't flinch when the big needle was brandished by my face. I appreciated the fact that Dr Rutherford didn't say something like, "You might feel a pinch." Instead, she told me to close my eyes and wiggle my toes and next thing I knew, I couldn't feel the entire right side of my mouth. Why, oh why, when you're numb and can't make your tongue function properly do the dentist and the assistant ask you inane questions like how your vacation was, and what's up with that picture of Glenn Close in the recent issue of People? Long story short, drilling was done in record time. Actual filling process took longer, but I can't tell the difference in my teeth. Looks like I didn't get a filling. Of course, this could be because no one told me that my jaw would be sore and unable to open for more than a couple inches afterwards! Other good things to know. Dr Rutherford is excellent at the cleaning. Mostly pain-free and very, very thorough. She works in a cute, ivy covered building in mid-town with her husband, who is also a dentist. I found Heather (i'm going to call her by her first name, I hope she is cool with that), from yelp a while back when I knew that something bad was goin' down due to me not having dental insurance for the latter portion of college. Needless to say, I am a pansy when it comes to dental care (usually) or else I wouldn't have let the problem go so long. Heather has freed me of my fear. She knows I probably need a scotche more novocaine that the norm. She understands that my jaw aches keeping it open for more than 10 seconds. She's also super friendly and doesn't give that judgy-i-told-you-so vibe that dentists tend to give when they are advising their patients. She works quick and very lightly - I pretty much have a little snooze every time she's been in there. The practice belongs to both Heather and her husband Dr. Fong. I took a YELP chance and scheduled an appointment after reading the reviews. WOW! Dr. Fong is the best dentist I've ever been to. He's super nice, friendly, and makes you feel like he's known you forever. The staff is also amazing; as I waited to see Dr. Fong, they greeted all other patients that came in by name. I hate, hate HATE going to the dentist. However, I wad referred to Dr. Rutherford from several ladies that I work with and I am so glad I went. She is literally the nicest, gentlest dentist I have ever had. She knows how I feel about dentistry and she constantly asks me if I'm doing ok, if I'm in any pain, etc. I had 3 cavities filled today and was out of the office within an hour and a half. I didn't feel the shots in my gums and was never in any pain. She kept me aware of what she was doing the entire procedure. The office staff if very friendly. There is usually plenty of free parking on L or 24th. I will without a doubt continue to see Dr. Rutherford. read more

I found this dental office on Yelp and decided to try it out because I saw consistent comments about their kindness, gentleness, and sensitivity toward those of us who turn into cranky toddlers at the dentist office. I went in hoping for understanding and patience, and I was not disappointed. All I had done today was full-mouth x-rays and an exam and consultation, but even that is usually a horrible experience for me. I have a very small mouth and the logistics of taking x-rays has always been stressful and painful for me, with lots of gagging. I was embarrassed, stressed out, and near tears, but the staff were incredibly kind to me, worked at my pace, and gave me breaks to recover. They tried to find ways to take the x-rays that would hurt me less, and were never rude or condescending to me (which I have experienced at other offices). I am so grateful to them for taking the time to make the experience easier for me. Throughout the exam, Dr. Rutherford and her hygienist, Alyssa, were gentle and took the time to explain everything to me, educate me, and even broke out a hand mirror so they could show me what they were talking about. I need a deep cleaning and work done on past fillings that have come out, so I am already scheduled for two upcoming visits. Usually this would fill me with stomach-wrenching dread, and it's not like I'm looking forward to it, but I feel confident that they will take care of me. Dr. Rutherford has been the dentist for my special needs son for almost 20 years since we moved to Sacramento. Her gentle reassuring manner has made all dental issues easy for him to handle, from cleaning to fillings and crowns. Just recently, she and her husband and business partner, Dr. Fong, opened their office on a holiday to treat an abscess my son had developed. That rates a ten! My dentist is her husband, Dr. Fong, in the same office. My son and I get our cleanings and dental care at the same time. Dr. Fong also gets five stars. Both are gentle, competent dentists who don't push unnecessary procedures. I should have reviewed them on Yelp a long time ago, but I hardly ever do reviews. read more

I'm a fairly new patient of Dr. Rutherford and couldn't be more pleased. Not only is everyone on staff friendly, but I appreciate that Dr. Rutherford didn't try to take me to the bank ... let me explain. I went in for a crown, which begins with a temporary. By the time my permanent crown arrived I was still feeling quite a bit of pain in my mouth. I've had friends who have been to dentists before who had the same thing happen and were told "well, looks like you need a root canal" at this point - Anyway, she told me that it *might* mean a root canal but that she wanted to give it another week to see if the pain went away before moving forward with a root canal. We waited, the pain subsided and she put in my crown. I was quite appreciative that she was conservative in her approach as I couldn't begin to dream of how I might afford a root canal! read more

I've been coming to this office since I was six - before it was taken over by Drs. Rutherford and Fong. When they bought the practice years ago, I stayed on because I was in school and didn't want to find a new dentist. I've been seen by everyone on staff (including both dentists and the dental hygienist) and they're all fantastic - even the front desk staff (shout out to my girl Alice!!). Both doctors are extremely friendly, pleasant, easy-going people who are talented and attentive dentists. Dr. Fong will give you a nuanced history lesson on the anthropological origins of cavities if you ask him, and Dr. Rutherford takes a very gentle hand to dentistry. Let me start off by saying I'm NOT a patient of Dr. Fong & Rutherford, but my parents are. My parents are in their 70s and have been seeing these dentists since they took over the practice. My parents LOVE LOVE LOVE them. I too would be a patient but unfortunately they are not in my network. But I would like to post a positive review on behalf of my parents. They are both excellent and compassionate dentists who treat their patients very well. The staff is also friendly. I've been to quack dentists and dentists that made me feel like I was just there to pad their wallets and these 2 dentists are so very far from that. Did not get to experience this dentist, but the receptionist Kelly hung up on me. Then I called back and she argued with me about various mundane issues. She told me I had to do all the footwork to get complex dental images to her office. Ugg. After several minutes of this I gave up and called Dr. Yee at 707 J Street. No issues there.
