This winery is a bit stark in decor but the wines are anything but. This is a project of Jason Hazlitt. If you know upstate wines the name will ring a bell. In fact, their grapes are grown on the same plot of land as the famed Hazlitt's. That's where the considerable heritage ends however as HWC has built a solid business around hand-harvest and self-press of their grapes. They don't buy juice or farm out production--they do it themselves. This is not a sub-label of Hazlitt's but rather a unique winery with unique products. The wines are mostly on the white side this year with just a few reds outside of the up-market Forge label. The red blends are outstanding however and for Bordeaux-style blends one of the best on the market. Drinkable and dry, the wines were worthy of a double-take. One red varietal that stood out from the blends was the pinot noir. It was good enough it forced me to buy an extra checked bag to get some home. read more

Have been to this winery many times and love their wine. The policies and regulations after covid restrictions being lifted we were confusing for the staff and customers. They were not busy when we stopped and we so mot accommodating. Staff escalated the situation when we are already leaving . Way too many wineries on Seneca Lake I will neve go ther agiaim. Highly recommend this winery! The inside is beautiful (pictures above don't do it justice), the little market adds a nice touch of food with different styles of cheeses and meats, and the staff is friendly and accomodating. Now the wine...that's some classy wine. We did their flight of whites and were blown away by how crisp and clean the wine was. We expected their prices to be much higher, so we ended up buying multiple bottles. You're missing out if you don't come here and hang out with the amazing dog. read more

This small vineyard was fantastic, seriously delicious wines and great service, eventually. We were given quite the stare down when we came in, maybe we just look like trouble, I just don't know. The second we start talking and people recognize we aren't just young people looking to do tastings and hop to the next place to see how many vineyards we can fit in a day, they warm up to us a bit. Hey people, we like to talk wine, talk wine with us! Anyways, the gentleman assisting us was really informative and the tasting was very enjoyable overall. The tasting room is fairly new, I believe he said it opened in 2010. They do not accommodate large parties. Out of the question. I mentioned that I had a party of 35 coming the following week and the answer was a quick no, which was fine! We tasted one of the best cabernet sauvignons I have ever had, it was a 2016, limited release, absolutely delicious so we took a few bottles home with us. They produce quality wines and I don't believe this vineyard is on the Fingerlakes map you get from various hotels, so make sure not to pass this place by if you want a great experience. read more

Absolute best winery on the East side of Seneca! The owner is an absolute doll and amazing Every chance he got, he was talking to us, engaging with us, and always shared what he knew we'd love. Not only does this winery stay open later than most, but our experience here was top notch! James, our server was not only knowledgeable but super friendly and informative! We had gone to several other wineries around the lake but Hector Wine Company definitely stood out for the cool vibe and delicious wine!! You should definitely make this a must stop! Hectors was pretty nice. I liked the huge open layout. We were going to do a wine tasting individually like we had been doing all day but after crunching some numbers we decided to sit at the big table in the middle and share the bottle special. It was 3 bottles for $65.00 and we each got more than enough to drink and enjoy. Way more than you get with $3/3 tastings. It was also a nice change of pay to sit and enjoy the wine over the table with friends. Still a great way to experience several different wines and it's definitely a better bang for your buck! The servers definitely could've been more involved and informative. Rather than educating us about the different kind of wine they just put the bottles on the table and went and did their own thing. I mean it was fine but they seemed more interested in their friends at the bar than providing a great experience for out of towners. read more

Stopped by late on a Sunday to have a glass of wine. I know with the Covid virus things are different. But not really a good vibe from the staff here. Server said they were "pinching every penny" and prices were higher here. A pour is split between your party, emptied from what looks like a jelly jar. Not a place that I would return to. read more

Fantastic experience! We had a great conversation with the tasting room manager as we sampled the wine. He was friendly and gladly answered all of our questions about the winery, their grapes, and their bottling process. The wines were delightful and distinctive--we could have bought a bottle of each, but stopped ourselves at two. The environment is relaxed and comfortable. They don't need gimmicks because they have a quality product paired with top-notch hospitality. We'd love to go back! read more

If I could give it zero stars I would. The rudest place on the entire figure lakes. Need I say more. Stay away. We came on May 6, 2017 at 5 o'clock. If you are the owner you might want to check out who your stuff was then because every single one of them was rude. Especially the girl in the center tasting station. We decided not to stay and another group walked out at the same time as us when they saw the rude behavior of the staff towards us. read more

This was a great stop on our first weekend trip the Finger Lakes. It's so peaceful and being that it was a wine trail event weekend when we visited, it was nice to stop at a place that wasn't on the wine trail so it wasn't nearly as crowded as the other wineries we went to. I really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere and the building itself was calming and peaceful. We bought one bottle of white wine and the best part was the bread and cheese they sold. We bought one of the fresh baguettes they had available (and delivered that morning) and it went perfectly with our bottle of wine for dinner that evening. The prices are very reasonable and the tasting was great as well. I highly recommend stopping by this winery if you are going to be in the area! read more

If you want a solid and informative "real" tasting this is your place. Staff knows how to talk about acidity vs sugars and the way the wines taste as well as what they should be parked with. Their house red is to die for. All their reds are unfiltered and delicious. read more

Went there today with my family. This is a very new, 3year old winery run by passionate young people. They produce only enough wine to sell in their winery. The wines are good to very good for the area. But their attitude towards their customers us flawless! We had a wonderful time, drank great wine and enjoyed ourselves. Do not miss this one! read more

Great stop on our wine trip. We were really impressed with the caliber of the wines here. (We are WSET students and have high expectations.) Nice, open tasting room with counters and stools. Stopped here for a free tasting as part of the wine travel card. I chose 4 whites to taste and was impressed with every one of them, the Pinot Gris being my favorite. Their attention to detail is evident in both the wine and the tasting experience (i.e. beautiful Schott Zwisel glasses). Would definitely come back to taste their reds. read more

Our second visit was just as good as the first. A comfortable place to visit and a very relaxed atmosphere. A great mixture of reliable varieties and treatments with more "experimental" approaches. Fantastic winery. A group of 6 of us did 7 different wine tastings that day and hector wine company was the unanimous favorite. The staff was extremely knowledgeable and answered all of our questions in great detail. We were not rushed and had an unforgettable experience. Not to mention all of the wines had fantastic taste. If you are taking a tour up the east side of Seneca lake this is a must stop! This is not registered under the Seneca wine trail but do not let that veer you away, this is the best of the best. It was a really memorable experience, made an unplanned stop at this winery with a friend, and I have no regrets whatsoever. We felt most welcome and at home there thanks to the ambiance, the friendliness of everyone who seemed to be enjoying themselves here and not to mention, the dogs! The wines were very good ($5 for 8 generous samples) and we ended up buying a bottle. The friendly server made the reunion with my friend all the more memorable, he listened to which kind of wine we each liked and served us accordingly, served us the really yummy special mustard and even served extra samples when we were not decided on which one to purchase. I will surely visit here if I am in the Finger Lakes area again and definitely recommend this place to anyone planning a trip to the region. read more

Hard to tell if the wine was any good. The place was crowded so we stopped in for a tasting only to realize they were holding Bernie Sanders rally. We could purchase wine. We had a small glass in a plastic cup and split. I don't care about their politics but to pass off the crowds as authentic......is disingenuous. Put a sign out that it is a rally so those who are more interested in trying wines can simply move along. Plenty of other great options in the area. We stopped at this new winery for a quick tasting, but I just ended up ordering a glass of red wine (Soul Red) to enjoy, and it was truly the best one I had all day. The Soul Red wine was bold, but with soft tannins. I felt like there were cherry notes too- delicious. The owner, Justin, poured our wine, and he seemed very kind and friendly. Stopped here on a wine tour this weekend. First we were greeted by the winery dog! Love that, makes it feel like home! Our server was friendly and helpful, even though this was stop number 4 and some people were a little silly. Tastings were $3 for five or $5 for the whole list (I think 10?) Wines were a surprise too since they are a fairly new winery, the dry whites were good, and I enjoyed the sweeter whites too. Only red I tried was the sweet "river rat" and was not a fan of that one. There are scores of very drinkable wines from the Finger Lakes area and no doubt the Hector versions are among the best. But, don't stop at Hector without trying their slightly more expensive but rather unique Forge wines. Let Emma fill you in on the details and you might walk out with more wine than you expected to buy (as I did), but I doubt you'll regret it. read more
