I went to a training session near OAK today and the only refreshment available was institutional coffee. No fruit, sweet rolls or other nutrition was offered. That probably explains why the registration cost was so reasonable. So by the time Noon (and the end of class) came around, I was raring to go food wise. And if a food spread was available? I would have been picky, as to maintain my "girlish" figure. So as I was driving towards the freeway, Hegenburger's caught my hungry eye, and just below the Psychic reading business. Hegenburger's has has been around "forever" and my previous experience years ago was positive. Actually, In N' Out was probably a better (and also nearby choice), but I was shameless in needing another Yelp Review opportunity. The burger itself was tasty and nicely complimented the fries. You order at the counter and my basket was promptly delivered to my table. The interior decor is basic and my fellow clientele was mostly blue collar and appreciative of a good burger. This burger joint is older than dirt, but not quite as old as I am. Hegenburgers is an institution that has been on the same spot for as long as I can remember. It took several years before I actually ever stepped foot inside. The burgers are fresh and made to order, greasy, which is just how you would expect and want. The fires? even greasier. I can be a very punny guy, much to the consternation of my long-suffering wife. So when I first drove to the Oakland Airport on Hegenberger Road, I saw this burger shack with a name based on the name of the road: Hegenburger. I knew then that I had to eat there some time. Well, time passed, I've flown quite a bit but never stopped at that choke-n-puke. Until my hunny and I had been married for about a year, and coming back from Texas, we stopped here to eat. There is a song in "A Chorus Line" called "Dance 10, Looks 3". In this case, it's "Food 10, Atmosphere 3", which doesn't fit a song well, but gets the point across. I love burgers, and the Hegenburgers are one of the better ones I've had. They're the kind I'd eat at least twice a week if my aging arteries could stand it. But it's the type to end up on Guy Fieri's Drive-Ins, Diners & Dives show. It really is a dive, a true greasy spoon, visited by union workers and construction crews. Man, the food here is phenomenal. The milkshakes are made with real ice cream that you have to scoop into the cup and real milk. They make your food to order, the way you like it. Looking outside this place is very deceiving! Located at a corner off of Hegenberger Road in Oakland looking like there are no windows when driving past and an open gated front door left open. When we pulled up there were three Oakland PD Ford Explorers parked out front. A lady actually came up to a colleague of mine to ask if it's ok to eat here right now because of all of the police cars outside. Truth be known that there were about 6-8 OPD officers having lunch. Anyways, coming in there's a sandwich board showing their specials and saying that they use 100% Niman Ranch Ground Beef and how their burgers were 1/3 pound. Good beef for burgers, right? Impressive again for a joint that doesn't look too appealing from the outside. Ordered the Signature Burger which was a regular "Hegen Burger" but had garlic and onion in the party. Sounded good! Burger had its good amount of grease, but not too greasy and the patty was flavorful and noticed the garlic and onion. Bun and produce were fresh as well. Got the combo so the fries were fresh and crispy. Not bad at all for $10.50 including fries and a drink! Good experience here and a good burger at a great price! Went here for lunch. Hubby and I had the number two which is a double hamburger. The only difference was I had the French fries and hubby had onion rings. The meat in the burgers were pretty good. I especially liked the French fries. The fries were cooked well. The fries reminded me of McDonald's. My daughter had the junior hamburger which was just meat, cheese and ketchup. I just wish they sold just the meat without the bread cause the bread made it to filling for me. I still enjoyed the burger. I washed it down with diet Coke. The dining area had plenty of tables, two big screen televisions and one bathroom for customers only. You need to get a key to use the bathroom. Location is a little hole in the wall near the Oakland BART. The guy at the register was super nice and friendly. He even gave my daughter a chocolate wrapped dessert. So sweet of him. This is by far one of the lousiest places one could go to for a decent Philly Steak & Cheese. For about $10.00 bucks, you would think one would get at least a fair sandwich, but not. I gave them only 2 stars only because I don't really want to pass judgment on the rest of the menu since the steak and cheese is the only item I chose on the menu. A wonderful family owned and operated restaurant where you actually feel like family when you're here! Delicious burgers, fries and milkshakes. They even have gluten-free buns and lettuce wrap options. The owners are so kind they let the children play Miss Pac-Man for free while we waited for our food. Sports is on TV, the restaurant is clean, and so is the restroom. A steady flow of customers on a Thursday evening. Stopped by for some breakfast, hoping to find a good breakfast burrito. It's a small restaurant known for their burgers. Plenty of parking and can get pretty busy at about 10:00 in the morning. Not much to look at from the outside but a decent feel inside and clean. The staff is friendly, but after a long wait, and noticing customers who came in after us getting food before us we approached the counter to find out the delay. Besides the coffees we received the breakfast burritos we ordered never was submitted. So after a very long wait we finally received our food and wasn't too impressed. I ordered a sausage breakfast burrito and my friend ordered the bacon. The burritos were very bland, probably could of used some sour cream or something. The table next to us ordered the chicken teriyaki which looked delicious and they seem to be known for their burgers but I have never tried them.
