By the time I finally found Dr Heidi, I'd been so sick and for so many months that I wasn't sure I'd ever get better. I was so fatigued and had a mix of such bizarre symptoms that I was barely functional. I'm really disappointed that I need to write this review, as I truly wanted to enjoy my scheduled massage with Dr. Heidi Keating, L.Ac, DACM. I am a critical care nurse who has been caring for critically ill COVID-19 patients since March of 2020, and also the mother to two small children who cannot yet be vaccinated. Therefore, I wear a mask per CDC recommendations, and expect my healthcare providers to follow California Department of Public Health (CDPH) mandates. A friend bought me a gift card, and I scheduled online. When I arrived, none of the staff were wearing masks inside the facility. I thought this was odd, but I assumed that this meant that the staff were vaccinated, and that perhaps in close proximity they would don masks. Sadly, I was mistaken. Dr. Heidi was very polite and took me back for my appointment. As she was explaining my planned massage and treatments, she asked, "Would you like me to wear a mask?" To which I replied, "Sure, are you vaccinated?" She explained that she wasn't vaccinated, and that because she contracted covid many months ago that she is now "immune." I explained to her that this is not the case, and that perhaps she developed some now waning natural immunity to the strain of Sars-CoV-2 she was infected with, but given the Delta variant and increased morbidity and mortality for at-risk populations, that indeed the vaccine is very important. I explained that in fact, I received my Pfizer booster just yesterday to protect my patients and small children at home. This is where things got wild: Dr. Heidi immediately asked if I was going to sue her if I experienced a side-effect of the vaccine in the coming weeks. She said that many patients of hers have "experienced side effects" from the COVID vaccines, including blindness. She stated that she generally advises people to wait two weeks after vaccination before coming in for her treatments.... She literally asked me to release her from liability from her treatments. I am a nurse, and I respect Integrative Medicine and Eastern Medicine. However, Dr. Heidi is running a pseudo-medical spa performing invasive therapies such as chiropractic care, acupuncture, and more. Gem & Tonic describes themselves as, "a healing sanctuary designed by a group of holistic healers bringing the best Eastern & Western medical services under one roof." Their website describe how they use a "preventative medicine approach," are "inspired by Eastern and Western Medicine" bringing "doctors and healers in collaboration to create healthcare experiences to feel your best with spa comfort." If they are indeed a medical environment, they are flagrantly breaking the law by not wearing masks inside their facility. Worse, they are putting their clients at risk by prolonged close-contact exposures between unvaccinated staff and the public. It's one thing to choose not to be vaccinated, and quite another to break California Department of Public Health law. Even more disappointing is this "doctor's" lack of scientific and medical knowledge, and her willingness to put her patients at risk. At a time where unprecedented numbers of small children are dying from a preventable illness, Dr. Heidi's behavior is unacceptable. Dr. Heidi offered to refer me to another therapist, but I declined. How could I trust that anyone she refers to is practicing in accordance with the law and common sense? She refunded the gift certificate, and we parted ways respectfully. Before I found dr. Hiedi I was in chronic pain. I would rush to the ER 3-5 times a year. Physicians would prescribed me antibiotics but they would not work for me.
