3.5 stars. There should be a way to do that in Yelp. My friends and I checked out this place for brunch on a Sunday morning, switching it up from our usual Scoozi choice. I like the decor of the place in general, and would definitely like to check out the bar at night. I also like that the menu is very farm-to-table and a lot of the produce is from the local farmers. I got the egg white frittata and my friends got the huevos estudiados and the strawberry ricotta waffles. They were all pretty solid choices. I particularly enjoyed the tomatoes in my frittata and the rye bread that came with it, as well as a the small jar of preserves (produit de france? what happened to local farms?). in addition, my friend got the mimosa which he said he was surprised by how strong it was, in a good way of course. I'd give 4 stars but I'm taking 0.5 star off (or I'm trying to) because the service was a little off. It might have been because there was a bar mitzvah going on and they were a little overwhelmed, but 1. our table was not fully set when we were seated and I was missing a knife all the way till I asked for one after my main was served. 2. our server had a problem with splitting our check on to different cards, I'm not sure why since we do it regularly at other restaurants. She ended up going back and forth to the cash register trying to decipher what each of us had and printing out individual checks to charge our cards off on. It made me feel pretty bad, which isn't exactly what I want to feel when I'm paying $20 bucks for brunch. Overall though, nice place with good food. We had heard good things about the restaurant, so it seemed a perfect choice on a rainy night, as we were sleeping at The Study, just above. The modern space is comfortable, with good lighting and big windows overlooking Chapel Street... great for people watching. Drinks arrived fast: delicious local beer on tap, and a small carafe of red wine, chosen from an impressive list. With the food - things slipped. We shared a wedge salad that had a scoop of chopped bacon mix on top, but no dressing to slide between the leaves: and then it took an hour and a half for our mains- two burgers and a risotto-to be delivered. The burgers were cooling, and the risotto had filmed over with a light skin- signs that preparation had been completed a while back. We debated calling attention to this: but it was getting late- and one of us had a train to catch. Breakfast next morning was also slow to arrive: the egg sandwich was served on a delicious brioche roll, but the heavy layer of semi melted cheese inside, plus some wilted frisee leaves stuck to it- were not good. My choice to go with was a salad: the greens looked semi transparent from overlong contact with the dressing. Until our next visit, which I hope will be soon...I would recommend this lively and buzzy place as a great place to meet for drinks. read more

The food was good but wow was the service terrible! We were a table of 6 (4 students and 2 parents). We ordered 2 salads to start and then had to wait 90 minutes (!) for our main course (we had to ask twice for the status of main courses). Our meal took 2 1/2 hours. After we paid for our meal, I went over to the manager and told him we were staying at the hotel and how disappointed we were with the service. He did not care at all. While we love the Study and will stay here again in the future, we have crossed Heirloom off our list. Came here for a work event for dinner. I'll start with the positives -- the view, the espresso martini, and the dessert. Otherwise, the food was average, at best, with some dishes featuring odd flavor profiles. I had a Caesar salad which featured anchovies (to be expected) and pickles (???), with a thick, fishy dressing. My steak was well cooked but lacking flavor. A majority of the vegetables were roasted with a decent flavor but nothing to write home about. What concerns me most is that after eating here I came down with a case of severe food poisoning requiring a trip to the emergency room. A co-worker who also ate the salad developed food poisoning as well. Even if I didn't get sick I don't think I'd go back there again but now I definitely never will. read more

I am confused why people dislike this place so much. I noticed the little touches that made me appreciate this place that my sister pointed out. For example, listing local farms where they get their food from (very SF). I also like that it wasn't crowded. I live in the study hotel 2 weeks out of 4. I find Heirloom fantastic! The food and bar selections are amazing. The staff is friendly and always accommodating. Ed and Rob at the bar are the very best. The wait staff is excellent and professional and the kitchen readily accommodates food allergies and special requests. I have been everywhere in New Haven this past year. There is no place like Heirloom at the Study atYale. I eat at the study almost every night and it is always a personal and an enjoyable experience! Try it if you have not. The food is local and clean, the wine menu is outstanding though I would personally like to see more French Pinot by the glass selection and the cocktails are terrific! read more

Went for restaurant week. The good: service was excellent, the server was friendly and food came out quickly. Also, my martini was among the best I've ever had. Also, valet parking made driving there easy. Dessert was very good. The bad: as much as I want to love this place, the food was just not good. The mushroom soup was missing something and even though I was pretty hungry, I just couldn't eat it. The main courses were just ok. Also pretty expensive for what it was. Overall I appreciate the locally sourced ingredients and creative menu, it just didn't work out. I will come back for a drink but will not return for food. read more

Heirloom is quite a place, located on upper Chapel Street in the lobby of The Study Hotel. The vibe is upscale, trendy, modern--a place to see and be seen. We've been here for lunch and stop by on occasion for a delicious cocktail in the bar area. Tonight, we brought some friends to experience Heirloom. It was amazing! From the meat/cheese board appetizer (every time we get this it offers different meats and cheeses), to the 'wow, that's delicious' of each entree, and desserts to die for (lemon pane cotta, apple fritters, strawberry shortcake with olive oil gelato) it was an outstanding meal. Excellent service. This is top notch dining in downtown New Haven, and we can't wait to dine here again. read more

I'm a huge fan of Heirloom, especially after our wildly fun e-list Girls Night Out last year. And now it's even better: a new chef and an entirely locavore menu. Carey Savona (ex of Nobu, NY) has raised the bar with his locally sourced, revamped versions of traditional American foods. Start with a pile of charred Gypsy peppers, roasted and salted and as addictive as potato chips but oh, so much healthier. Next, a chunky sugar pea puree to spread on husks of grilled fresh bread. Lunch was Carey's genius rendition of a tuna melt: smoked New England trout piled on artisanal bread, smothered with cheddar and radish slivers, served with a side of homemade pickles (newly legal in CT) and devilishly good fries. Omnivore and vegetarian friendly, the new menu is a must try. Makes you wonder why every restaurant on the Shoreline has yet to embrace this trend. Girls night out anyone?? read more

Love love loved brunch here. Made reservations with a friend for 11:30am on a Sunday. Wasn't as busy as I thought and even though we arrived a but early we were seated right away. Hostess was nice, took our drink order while seating us. Ordered a mimosa, a brunch staple - it was delicious! Our waiter was attentive and polite. We ordered the apple doughnuts which were to die for. For my meal I ordered huevos estudiados with a side of bacon. My friend also ordered a side of bacon with her blueberry pancakes (which looked amazing!). We really should have ordered one side.. 6 pieces per side! My food was fantastic. Great wine list :) Musts: ricotta best ever- I've tried to reinvent a version at home. octopus- for garlic lovers but such great flavor. Pumpkin buratta is always one of my favs. The spaghetti squash scallops is a go two every time but I am never scared to try something new. This used to be our "go to" My husband always ordered the bouillabaisse and loved it ! We felt like it was home Recently we were there he ordered his Fav and It was not the same. It seems they no longer serve the bouillabaisse the traditional way ,the way they always had with the dollop of Aioli (or pistou) How can this be? We were just there? We told the manager we could not eat it It was bland . He was unfazed. He was very unapologetic .It was infuriating . He said "we changed the way we serve it I could put some spicy mayo in there for you" EWWWWWWW Without the dollop it was not bouillabaisse it was fish stew ? It is hard for me to give any star rating on this restaurant based on my recent experience. I had a strange experience at the Heirloom this past week over breakfast. In a nutshell, after being seated by a hostess and waiting for 20 minutes, I was not served. I can understand if the restaurant was busy, but I arrived at 9:40. There were 4 tables of 2 and one table of 4. All have already been served their meals. The waiter, or I assumed was the waiter pass by my table 3 times without any acknowledgement. After 10 minutes my my being seated, a different hostess seated a table of 4, and took their beverage order. My hostess did not take my beverage order. The waiter went to that table shortly after and took their order. After 20 minutes of waiting , when the waiter passed my table the third time, I took the hint. I brought it to the attention of the second hostess who very politely apologized. I asked to speak with the manager who also politely apologized. The hostess who initially seated me did not offer an apology. What I found strange was that neither the second hostess or manager, after apologizing offered to take my breakfast order, or offer coffee or water. I also got the sense from their apologies that this is not the first time this has happened and in this particular morning, was aware of what was going on before I brought it to their attention. I ended up buy coffee at the coffee bar in the lobby of the hotel. I will leave readers of this review to decide for themselves how they want to use this review. I've been visiting this restaurant on and off for years now and have recently had the opportunity to enjoy some quiet afternoons in the lounge. Heirloom is like a hidden gem in New Haven. No other restaurant has this studious lounge atmosphere that is both inviting and functional. While working on my computer I was able to comfortably enjoy a fresh brewed Americano and a delicious Burger and fries that was like a nod to a familiar home cooked meal...except that I cannot make a burger taste this awesome. There is a sweet horseradish jam that makes it out of this world. I'm nervous to post this review only because it may make others in the area start frequenting my quiet lunch spot...but nothing this good should stay a secret. read more

The octopus is not the best in New Haven so to compete this restaurant/hotel will need to step it up. You should know by now that your two humble narrators, Hans and Mendez, are not your legal type of fellows. You know, Moet drinking, marijuana smoking street dwellers. We take more than one lollipop when at the bank. We take the shoelaces out of our Addidas sneakers. We strut around New Haven with spitballs ready. We have visited The Heirloom, a sleek bar found in the grotesque building known as The Study on more than one occassion. You don't need the giant pair of glasses cemented to the steps to see this soulless restaurant is for Stepford Wives and Pompous Pops who need a lil' luxury when in our classy city. Like roaches we crawl to the open hotel doors. Our fascination peaked with their 9 dollar happy hour special. Five dollars for a burger, four for a Stella Artois. Sounds appetizing on their chalkboard, even their doorman recommended it as "the best happy hour in town." Their bar is as sexy as a hardware catalog. ESPN flickered silently on the television while Hans and Mendez waited for the bartender. An employee eventually appeared behind the bar and took the orders, then dashed off. Hans, Mendez, and a friend who wishes to remain unnamed (he was playing hooky from work) sat in the ghostly bar, music playing softly in the background. A manager, most likely the bartender's mom, came over twenty minutes later. The long awaited burgers were carried by our spectral bartender, ten minutes after the den mother checked in on us. He promptly disappeared. Outside a tumbleweed drifted by. The burgers are nothing to rave about. The bun is from McDonalds steamed like McDonalds and lightly sweated on the plate. The lettuce and tomato were chewy like dog toys. The meat squeaked. Mendez used half of the ketchup bottle to drown the taste. Mendez claims to be a ketchup fan when confronted about this incident. The french fries (do we make mention they are unhealthy again?) sucked. Drown the chef in ketchup, not the food. For nine dollars, one can turn off their mind and taste buds and enjoy the experience for what it is; sub par and memorable for lacking any gaudy flair The Study's edifice wishes to exhibit. You may find yourself asking "Why would anyone go back?" To this we shrug our shoulders. Nothing better to do, we guess. Extremely Disappointing Experience! Worst food service experience I have ever endured. It is appropriate to note that the author of this review is not ordinarily known as one to complain about poor service during a meal, nor is the author, for that matter, the typer of person who might be inclined to write a review of any kind, let alone a review of this length. However, my recent dining experience at Yale's Study "Heirloom" Restaurant begs that I write this review if only to warn those prospective diners who might happen to find themselves thinking about dining at Yale's Heirloom Restaurant in New Haven, CT. My wife and I went to Heirloom searching for an alternative breakfast spot to the ever popular, always good, but often crowded, classic New Haven, CT, breakfast spot, "The Pantry Restaurant." Upon entering Heirloom we were shocked to find the restaurant completely deserted, literally there was not one other customer in the restaurant at the time of our arrival at approximately 11:00AM on a weekday morning. After waiting approximately 20 minutes a server approached our table with an air of superiority, provided water and took our drink/breakfast order, all the while not bothering to write a single component of our food orders down on paper. After placing our orders our server proceeded to inexplicably diseappear for another 25-30 minutes span of time. All the while the restaurant remained completely empt. When our server finally appeared she dropped off our drinks in addition to the pastry basket my wife and I had ordered. All the while failing to note that the water and coffee mugs filled by the hostess upon the time of our arrival to the restaurant approximately 45 minutes earlier had now run dry. Perhaps predictably by this time, our sloth like server failed to include the jam and butter that were advertised as being included in the pastry dish. It was not until another 15 minutes, YES LITERALLY 15 more minutes, had passed until our server appeared out of the wild blue yonder with the missing items, drink refills and our breakfasts. I had decided to order the Study Breakfast. Standard breakfast which incudles your choice of two eggs, potatoes, toast, and choice of either bacon, sausage or corned beef hash. I ordered perhaps the most basic of selections, eggs fried over hard, bacon, potatoes and wheat bread. What our server delivered was entirely different from what I had ordered. Every item on the plate was cold, the fried eggs I had ordered fried over hard were cooked over easy, Instead of wheat toast I was given rye, instaed of bacon I was given two cold sausages which had solidified at this point and had a cold and yellow fat like substance seeping out of the sides. The potatoes were the only thing right on the entire plate but unfortunately they also happened to be the smallest component of the entire breakfast dish. And what might you ask does Heirloom charge patrons for this one of a kind culinary experience, $14. That is $14 just for the two eggs, toast, choice meat and a spoon full of cold half cooked potatoes. At this point my wife and I had about enough of our Study experience. It had been over an hour by this point since our arrival to the Heirloom Restaurant. I should note that towards the very end of our dining experience one other unfortunate couple had the misfortune to enter the restaurant. I'm not sure of the slow service was due to a question of timing or simply the fact that word is starting to get around town that this place is an utter disaster. I choose to have my 2 egg breakfast comped as opposed to waiting to see if our server could get my order right the second time around. Despite the egg meal having been comped the tab for two people still came to a total of nearly $40! I can only speak as to the experience that I had at Yale's Heirloom Restaurant. However, I would warn anyone to think twice before they decide to try this restaurant. The city of New Haven has a lot more to offer than this. Rest assured knowing that your not missing much if you don't make it to Yale's Heirloom Restaurant. Let me end by saying this, even if staying at the Study Hotel and given a comp meal at Heirloom I would still prefer to walk outside and be run down by the closest passing bus than to sit through another meal at this restaurant. read more

(3.5 stars...read on) My parents were coming to visit us for a day, and they wanted to take us out for brunch - of course, I'm told this at the last minute. So the day before (having confirmed they were definitely still visiting), I do a quick search to see which places nearby a) took reservations and b) had available seats. Not as easy as I used to have it, but thankfully Heirloom popped up on Opentable and I booked us for 1pm on Sunday since earlier times were all full. 1pm worked out perfectly - they had enough time to drive up from NYC, see our place in East Rock and spend some time together before driving downtown. Managed to snag a parking spot not far from the Study Hotel, and even a few minutes late we were fine because the restaurant was only half full - and emptying quickly. The hostesses were able to accommodate my disabled father and sat us at a more accessible table. It took us a few minutes to settle and look over the menus - my parents ordered bloody marys while we preferred to abstain - and then we ordered: I selected the kale egg white frittata (after much debate, it all sounded delicious!), my mom had the hams and eggs, my husband chose the turkey melt, and my father went all out with a cup of tomato soup, their huevos rancheros, and a side of bacon. He was clearly in a good mood. The food overall was good - I'm not sure how I feel about the prices (we're in New Haven people...not NYC), but portions were large (and we weren't paying)! The frittata was fluffy, topped with burrata and covered in a mountain of greens (not just kale); my husband's turkey melt tasty, filling, with a ton of fries; my mom's 'ham and eggs' was the gourmet version with delicious slices of prosciutto, poached egg, arugula salad, burrata, garlic aioli...I don't know how she "couldn't finish it;" dad's soup was creamy and chipotle-smoky, he ate the rancheros so quickly that I didn't get a chance to snag a bite!, and although he was sharing his side of crispy bacon, I had to turn it down. Especially since he ordered dessert! We "shared" the baked butter pear crumble, topped with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce, but he ate the majority of it. Coffee was from illy, so smooth if pricey. Here's the ONE THING that bothered me: the amount of time it took for us to receive ANYTHING. It took a damn long time for their drinks to arrive, it took even longer for our food to arrive, there was a considerable delay in getting the dessert menu, and then even longer for our coffee/espresso/latte and dessert to arrive! I don't know if the kitchen is normally this slow, or if there was something else going on, so I'm going to give them the benefit of doubt. The servers were very nice, friendly, and attentive, checking in to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. We'll be back to check out the rest of the brunch menu - and dinner, of course. read more

We decided to have our Valentine's Dinner here, and while I usually don't go out for V-Day because of the forced romance and the "special" menus, we threw caution to the wind and dashed out in the cold. The result? Worth it! We really enjoyed our meal, and shared each other's dishes throughout the meal. They have a fantastic wine menu as well. Our server was a bit "green" but attentive. I recently met a friend for drinks and appetizers at the Heirloom bar and lounge area. The bartender served us. He asked us what we wanted to drink but we had to request a menu. Then I wanted to order appetizers so he brought me a menu. I said to my friend that I wanted something small. The bartender rudely said to us "we only serve what's on that menu." Geez... sorry for bothering you! He didn't make any suggestions and wasn't welcoming at all. The atmosphere and scenery at Heirloom are pretty but I won't be returning to their restaurant if that's the kind of unfriendly and disinterested service we'll receive. read more

I've been to the study twice and have not been thrilled by either experience. The first time I had a good dinner with a party of six people late in the evening. The service was slow, but the food was decent; everyone at the table enjoyed their meal, but no one raved for seconds. Based on my first experience I didn't protest when a friend organized a lunch there, but unfortunately we had a terrible experience. Although the restaurant has a great ambiance the service and the lunch menu have a lot to be desired. We waited 35 minutes before the waitress finally took our food orders, and it took another hour and fifteen minutes to finally get our food. My burger (ordered it medium) came out overcooked and dry and the french fries that the waitress had raved about were too salty to eat and seemed to be fried in old oil. The lobster fried rice left much to be desired and no one who ordered it finished their meal. One friend sent her salad back to the kitchen because the chicken was dry and inedible, and another friend had a dirty water glass. Despite the multiple complaints about the long wait and the quality of the food neither the waitress nor the manager apologized or offered a solution for the problem, and neither came to make sure we were satisfied with our food once it finally arrived (the most the waitress did was take the salad off the bill). The worst dining experience I've had in New Haven and would not recommend this to any friend. The only thing worth mentioning about this restaurant is the great decor and the wine selection, although the waitress was not knowledgeable about the wine. And to top it off the waitress insisted that we pay 20% gratuity for the terrible service. If you're looking for a chic dining experience I'd say go to Bespoke or Zinc because they've never let me down and have similar prices with great food and service. read more

The restaurant and staff are both outstanding! The food was delicious and on point for each course. On top of having stellar food, the team at Heirloom is one of the best in New Haven. At the last minute when our reservation was "lost" at Shell & Bones in New Haven, Heirloom was able to come in and save the day. They arranged a table for 14 within 25 minutes of us calling. Scene: restaurant week at Heirloom, an expansive, well-lit restaurant that's minimalistic yet warm at the same time. Food: Tomato soup: light and I really enjoyed the roasted tomato flavor that came out in the soup. Typically I go for the creamier tomato soups but I really enjoyed this one, especially the croutons! Mussels: Even though the mussels were tiny (must not have enough muscle heh heh), the creamy orange sauce was delicious. We requested some bread to go along with the sauce and the waiter graciously brought out a fresh loaf, crunchy on the outside and soft and air on the inside, just how I like it. Butterscotch pudding with a toasted marshmallow: This was the denser out of the two desserts and the pudding was very thick and sweet. If you're having major sugar cravings, I would definitely recommend this. Trying to cut the marshmallow in two was an arm workout and the marshmallow fought a good battle. Strawberry panna cotta: This layered dessert was on the tarter side. The bottom layer is the panna cotta, then a layer of strawberry shortcake, topped with a scoop of lemon gelato and a sprinkle of pistachio. Wow, this was amazing for a dinner with a friend while I was visiting! I'll just cut to the chase and not try to be particularly witty. We had the the Smoked Maine Trout Dip to start and it was to die for! Brought out with crusty bread, I almost couldn't stop eating it! My friend got the salmon and it was probably the most moist salmon I have ever had without being undercooked (I am not a fan of the medium rare salmon). I got lamb ragu. It was hearty and warm and absolutely delicious. The pasta was fresh and the lamb was moist and flavorful. While I feel like I never want to eat food again because I'm so stuffed, I am very happy I got this for dinner and I know I will sleep well tonight! Great atmosphere. But I don't recommend the soft shelled crabs. Salty for one and just not the right "sauce"- supposedly it was tartar sauce but was way overloaded with dill and vinegar. Service was very good. read more

Very disappointing food in an elegant environment. Had the Lamb Ragu: too much cheese and overbearing use of "truffle oil" (which is flavoring not from actual truffles). It has a chemical taste. It was ZERO stars. I give the place two stars because of decor and service. Others at my table were unimpressed with theirs (Lobster Buccatini). Too bad. read more
