The kale salad was great ! The butternut squash soup was really good too. But the mac and cheese with chicken was a bit on the bland side needed some type of seasoning to it. Couldn't tell if it was rhe chicken or the Mac and cheese but the rhe entire dish needed something more. But still enjoyed my lunch for restaurant week. Really nice atmosphere. Was in the city looking for something new to eat and we spotted this place. We did not know at first it was connected to a hotel. It is a very nice restaurant. I ordered Charcuterie along side with Scallops. The charcuterie was very delicious, probably one of the best spreads I have had in a long time. The scallops were also very good. The reason why I am giving this establishment a low rating is because I did not receive the best service. Our Alexander waiter was inattentive and rude. First time trying this spot out. It is inside a hotel. No ramp from what I saw to enter. Had to carry stroller up the stairs and no handicap button to push open doors. Restaurant is very clean and upscale. The service took too long and the staff look miserable. Ordered the French toast and it was DROWNING in butterscotch. Had I known, I would of said just drizzle it because it was too sweet. Scrapped it off just to eat. The potatoes were very good! Also ordered a bacon egg and cheese with fries. The egg on the bacon egg and cheese was over easy and the bun was soaked in yolk. On the menu it states "fried egg." I would not return nor feel it was worth the price. read more

When you walk into the doorway at 1157 Chapel Street you have two choices. If you go left, you approach the registration desk for the Study Hotel. But if you go right, you approach the hostess station for the Heirloom Restaurant. Having lunch reservations, we went right and had a seat in their very crowded dining room. Our experience was really two experiences. The food was really good! I ordered something I had never seen on any menu - a dish called Shakshouka ($16), described as "Two Baked Eggs in Spiced Harissa Tomato Sauce with Peppers, Feta, Kale & Cilantro". I did some research and found it's a Middle Eastern dish that commonly includes poached eggs and a hearty sauce made of tomatoes, chili peppers, onions, and spices. It was served with two small slices of bread and I really loved it. Our table also ordered a gorgeous and decadent dish - Bananas Foster French Toast ($14). It was three big French Toast slices slathered in a Banana Caramel Toffee, and was served with pecans and a scoop of salted caramel gelato. Yeah, you can all put your tongues back in your mouth now. I had a cup of coffee and we all split an order of five Hot Caramel Apple Doughnuts ($10) served with Cinnamon Sugar and Vanilla Anglaise. The spherical doughnuts were very light and delicate and reminded us more of popovers than donuts. All of these good things were somewhat tempered by the slow as molasses service which was just plain awful. We had some very long waits for the food, and an incredibly long wait for the check. On the way out, we saw some a very cool freebies at the hostess stand- little seed packets to plant your own tomatoes, squash, and zucchini and pumpkins. Visited Heirloom for dinner a couple of weeks ago. Came away with mixed feelings. First, the good. The mains were great. I had the Sepe Farm lamb which was excellent. My wife had the ravioli - also excellent. The service was also very good. The wine list had some interesting selections- by the glass and bottle. A little pricey but better than the average. The cocktails were creative and superb. The desert was excellent. The apps were mediocre at best. The setting is very nice but very loud. It was listed as "Classy" & though there were many people dressed in nice casual, there were also baseball hats and ski caps and shorts. It would appear anything goes. read more

The restaurant was definitely MEH. Would I absolutely refuse to go there again, no but wouldn't waste my time. My table was comprised of 9 people and we requested the bill to be split into two. Fine, the waiter took all 9 orders. 20 or so minutes later 4 of us got our food and then waited and waited for the other 5 to get theirs (mind you there were duplicates in each group). The other 5 didn't get their order until the first 4 were finished eating AND that was only after someone got up to complain. Now onto the food it was okay but nothing to write home about. I had the Farro, butternut squash and kale salad - they shouldn't have bothered mentioning the kale since if there was one diced leaf I would have been shocked. There was a lot of Farro. This is a cute place that is actually open for breakfast in the mornings in New Haven. They food is alright, but I do enjoy their selection of breads (I always get sourdough). However, the service is a bit slow and I always have to ask for ketchup, butter, and jam. They even forgot the cream cheese for a bagel when we asked for it while placing the order. Came in for a quick bite to eat while I had to kill time. The atmosphere is very relaxing and beautiful. Not a big menu, just simple breakfast choices. I did think the service was a little slow for being almost empty (waited 10 minutes just for water) but things happen. Regardless the food was very good. A little expensive but mimosa was strong and my egg was cooked perfectly. I also tried their plain pancakes and I never thought I would enjoy plain pancakes so much. I'll start off by saying that Heirloom has been one of my tried and true favorite up-scale restaurants in New Haven for 14 years. This latest visit (12/9/23) was a disaster. My friend and I were having a pre-show (Yale Rep) dinner and had a reservation at 6:30 pm. We ordered our dinner and drinks pretty quickly (6:45 pm) - and then waited, and waited, and waited. No bread or other little noshing items for the wait -- and later when I asked, was told they don't serve bread, they just have crostini, which I decline as I didn't want charred baked pieces of bread (which is what crostini is). So we finally flagged down our waitress at 7:15 pm - who hadn't been by us at all - to inquire on our dinners as it seemed slow. 5 minutes later she comes with our dinner. We dig in to discover it is lukewarm, and mine is a little limp - as if it had been forgotten under the heat lamps for too long. My friend's beef cheeks with mashed potato and broccoli rabe fared better than my scallop dish which was covered in a cheese over some mushrooms, and supposedly spaghetti squash but only a few strands could be found - the whole thing was gloppy, lacking distinguishable flavor, scallops were bland and rubbery. Then I notice the table next to us has a bread board delivered with big luscious looking slices of soft bread. Again I look around for our waitress - but just got up to go find her and say that they do have bread. Again she says that the table next to us has crostini with ricotta. So I say ok then, if their crostini looks like bread, I'll take some. When it is delivered my pieces of bread are browned and charred hard -- and the butter is frozen solid. At that point I just wanted to cry. When she comes again we ask for the bill and to take off the crostini (I hadn't eaten it) and I explain mine is burnt and not like the table next door. She comes back with another piece of bread - still toasted but not charred. I am sad to see such a decline in the food and the service. I won't be back. read more

I previously reviewed this restaurant and gave it great reviews. That being said, if they are having an event there or in one of the private rooms I would not plan on eating here. Parking: Lots of parking street and garage ($7 garage) Layout: Looks great inside and always fresh appearance Staff: This time around, it was lacking, to the point where we would ask for things and they would not come out or they would be brought out 20 minutes later (oil, ice cubes...not big things) Food: Ordered food at 7pm, entree came out at 8:30...an hour and a half...the presentation should have been stellar...It wasn't even close!! I felt like they hired a cook from Burger King. Spent $36 on steak and it was so tough that I could not cut it with a steak knife. BBQ Oysters looked like they were frozen and served from a package. Octopus was so over seasoned that it was like eating a bowl of spices...could not taste the food at all Cost: After all the waiting and lack of service, I would expect a discount...NOPE, bill was $186 for two people. Even 3 stars is generous. Really mid, and that's not even considering prices. Got the fish and chips and it was incredibly bland, tough, and clearly unseasoned. They gave probably about a tablespoons worth of aioli malt vinegar sauce to dip five pieces of fish and fries in (definitely not enough). Only attractive thing about the place is the interior and location, but that just sets its food up for greater disappointment. If you're only dining for one, don't expect to be really waited on at all. If your not someone who cares about their food and are just looking for some place to sit down somewhere with nice daylighting with someone to chat over a meal, this place might be okay for you. But if you're looking to enjoy meal I would recommend literally any of the other small shops on chapel and surrounding area that are small family owned businesses. read more

The website said the dress code was classy yet they let people in with baseball hats, stocking hats, hoodies and shorts in to dine. Not really my idea of classy. Pretty good but not great. Positives: The atmosphere was nice if you like loud bistro type places. The kale salad was awesome. My server was excellent and attentive. The corpse reviver #2 that I got was really good. Negatives: I ordered scallops. Aside from the butter sauce that was only on the individual scallops (4 of them), this dish was lacking in flavor. I had to add quite a bit of salt and pepper, and I can't remember ever doing that to a scallop dish in a restaurant. The preparation with mushrooms and fennel should have been delish, but it just wasn't. I ordered a Sancerre that had notes of Budweiser so focused on the cocktail. This used to be a fabulous restaurant, but at this point the managers and owner - who all know about and all see the constant decline in ratings, dissatisfied customers, dismal reviews - have seemingly given up on trying to fix the free fall. When they make mistakes (ignore allergies or bring the wrong item five times in a row, forget to bring your food until it's cold from sitting there) - they just shrug. At this point it's like buffet food at a cheap holiday inn. This used to be the go-to place for faculty. Now it's avoided. A very classy a pretty place in New Haven. Decided to get some brunch on Black Friday morning. There's a ton of seating and Heirloom is connected to the Study which seems like a really nice coffee shop. For drinks got their grapefruit juice and my sister had a guava mimosa. My sister asked if they could put less champagne (haha) in her mimosa and they were really helpful and even gave her the little bottle of champagne for her to control it herself. (In the end I put a little in my grapefruit juice because she left so much) But Black Friday morning means having Thanksgiving weekend specials on the menu! We got the "Gobbler" and the Lobster Benedict. I really like that they put the benedict (and the gobbler) on top of a type of corn bread instead of just regular toast. But both were super heavy dishes and I ended up not being able to finish it all up. The asparagus in the lobster benedict was really good, and also the egg was perfect along with the lobster really delicious. As for the "Gobbler" There was delicious stuffing and a cranberry sauce on the side as well. The cranberry sauce was just the right amount of tangy and sweet and helped with the heaviness of the dish. Overall a pretty good experience of brunch in Connecticut. read more

We eventually had to flag for service. Then the servers still took a long time to come back. It didn't seem like such a bustling Monday night dinner. Food was good. I ordered 2 sides and to my amazement, the server told me he mixed them. This was actually disgusting. I didn't want to make a scene in front of my company but really? You thought to mix, without asking, sautéed mushrooms with a very differently flavored pungent chili broccolini. Not good in the least. What an awesome breakfast/brunch spot! I came here with a few friends passing by looking for a good breakfast joint and I am so glad we caught this place driving by. It's not the biggest restaurant but it sure does offer big portions. Heirloom is steps beyond your traditional diner. They offer delicious variations of breakfast options with an extensive menu. The staff is sweet and friendly. Right when you walk in you get a feeling of eating in someone's home. They have a lot of different pancake and waffle creations. Each one sounded so good. So i ended up getting the super unique chocolate chip banana pancake. The pancakes were light and fluffy. They weren't dense like other bad pancakes that i've had. Bad. Bad. Bad. Heirloom has jumped the shark. My partner and I were regulars here pre-Covid. After a second truly lousy experience, I doubt we will be back. Seated at the bar, my partner and I ordered drinks, a $24 charcuterie board, plus an $8 side of french fries. Fries were served cold and unsalted. We asked for extra salt and ketchup. Bartender couldn't be bothered. (In fairness to him, the restaurant is seriously understaffed.) The $24 charcuterie board was beyond disappointing. It was really an absolute joke, consisting of five slices of bread, three slices of salami, three rolled up slices of an awful quality of prosciutto, four smashed green olives, Gulden's mustard, and a tiny hunk of Parmesan cheese? (Parmesan? Really?). Whoops, I forgot the five sour pickle chips. Like the ones that go on a McDonald's hamburger. As mentioned above the service was horrible. Pretty much non-existent. Note that Heirloom re-opened 6-8 weeks ago. We visited right after their re-opening, and had a questionable experience that was written off to the recent re-opening. This was by far the best brunch experience we've had in New Haven. My boyfriend and I decided to sit at the bar, and we were greeted by the bartender, Alexander with a welcoming smile. The service was perfect - just the right amount of attention to give us our privacy yet feel very well taken care of. We enjoyed a cocktail - I ordered "the morning call" and my bf ordered the one with the smoky drink with jalapeño tequila & coconut cream (can't remember the name but it was amazing. They get the smoky flavor by using a smoke gun on cherry wood board..it was awesome). Now, to the best past. Omg the food. Since my bf and I both have sweet tooths, we couldn't skip the hot caramel apple donuts (we worked out, so we deserved this). They were incredible - 5 hot and sugary donuts, with real apples inside and a delicious anglaise on the side. Good thing the service was so quick or we would've ate all of them. For our main course, I ordered the egg white kale frittata - beautiful fluffy egg whites with crispy kale and a light tomatoes sauce on top with refreshing spring salad on the side. It was so unique, with just the fight amount of sunflower seeds and delicious burrata. It tasted like it came straight from the farm. My boyfriend ordered the huevojs estudiados, which came out in a piping hot skillet. The fried eggs were runny - but he loved them. It was served in a salsa sauce with black beans, cotija cheese with pita bread on the side, perfect for dipping. The two TV screens at the bar were playing an American in Paris, which made our experience even better. Took us back in time. Maurice (the manager) greeted us and made sure we enjoyed everything. Such a welcoming place to eat. The host was beyond friendly and seated us upon arrival, and shortly after we were greeted by our waiter which we knew from another restaurant that she previously worked at and to our surprise she was just as friendly now as she was then. We started with the warm bread with ricotta cheese and I kid you not you can put that stuff on anything. We opted for multigrain bread which in ny opinion was a great choose. The grape fruit juice was freshly squeezed and made for a good substitution of out go to mimosas. Our main dish was thee pan roasted salmon, which was a pretty big piece of fish laid on top of a avocado & pea gazpacho which created an amazing combination. Overall I will be visiting this place soon as they have a very fresh menu for brunch also the service was beyond great all of the staff was friendly the place was clean nice and fancy.
