Every time I go to Newark, it's after 2PM. Not this time! My BIL and I stopped in here for some quick eats while moving my daughter out of her apartment. The counter staff was friendly and efficient. This is a no-nonsense place. Healthy food (ok, maybe not exactly), drinks, tables, stools. What else do you need? Personally, I think the hours need to be extended. read more

Went back after someone reached out and said that the sausage wasn't from their normal supply and I could get the roll toasted. Totally changed the sandwich. Toasting the roll took a minute tops and made all the difference in the experience. Was in and out before the Newark parking enforcers could even scan my plate (I always pay for parking though so I paid the $.25 fee and the inexplicable $.35 "convenience fee" in Passport but that's for another rant). Service was fast and friendly, sausage was great. One note, I did let the whole sandwich wrapped in foil sit for about 5 minutes to allow the cheese to melt and it was well worth it. The food here has always been great but I don't come here as often as I might otherwise because of the coffee. There is one small pot of self serve, lukewarm coffee. Old school sugar, powdered creamer and a cup with a couple sweeteners tell me you still don't care about coffee. Just some real cream or half and half would be a huge improvement for a place focused on breakfast. Come here for great food served fast but plan to make a stop elsewhere for coffee. read more

I have been wanting to go to Helen's for a long time. It just never worked out. Spoiler alert; I liked it. I usually like to go to the original location. I think it is safe to assume the sausage is the same at both locations. I like Newark in the summer with minimal UD students. $8 for a double sausage, egg and cheese sandwich, you know I like that. I got American cheese. Next time I am going to try the cheddar. It was a little dry but good. I don't see me waiting in any of the long lines I see people waiting in to get Helen's Sausage. Stopped for breakfast at the Newark location this morning. It was NOT good. After eating at the Smyrna location since the nineties, I would have expected a similarly good meal. Ordered two orders of the sausage gravy. They had no biscuits and instead used two pieces of Texas toast sized bread. I watched the kid spoon the gravy in and it looked like he was sprinkling a condiment. When I opened the food container I was surprised at how little gravy there was. I scraped it off the bread and it amounted to about three tablespoons. They had no coffee or tea. $20 for a scrimpy breakfast which ended up in the Newark street trash bins. You people in Smyrna better pay closer attention to what the people in Newark are doing or you'll soon be closing your doors. I won't be repeating that mistake again. read more

Ok. Take II.....Great experience today at Helen's in Newark. Again I arrived 15 minutes prior to closing (not on purpose). They were still open. The ladies inside were extremely helpful and upbeat. Food was outstanding. Guessing my first experience was a "one-off" and I know that everyone has off days. I bought a single and a ton of sausages for the weekend St. Patty's Day parade post party.
