So disappointed. I've always gotten good Italian subs here in the past but I live four hours away now and haven't been in maybe a year. Since I live so far away, my priority for what food I order to take home is always an Italian sub -- and I ordered two, both with extra meat. I've never had an Italian sub that was just ham and ... I don't even know what the other meat was but it was dark, smoked and past its prime. No salami? No capicola? Just ham and ... unknown dark meat that was NOT an Italian meat. I'm so disappointed. Here I am, four hours away with two large subs and I'm going to have to throw them in the trash. The one meat is just not edible. I also ordered "extra meat" and what ended up on my sandwich was less than the average I expect on a regular sub. Really disappointed. I should add that the potato salad is DELICIOUS and that the people were very nice. read more

It appears that inflation has led to deflation in sandwich sizes. I was unfortunate enough today to buy one of the skinniest subs that I've ever had from any Country Maid in 50 years. I'd rather pay a dollar or two more and get the same fat subs that they're known for. read more

Was looking for something quick suddenly when my dinner plans fell through. SO GLAD that I came across Brookside Country Maid Deli! I got the sampler for my meal ; I love that I was able to select what came in it! ( do wish it came with more smaller sauce, but I had ranch so nbd ) and I ordered mozzarella sticks to share with my fiancé, who ordered the cheese steak platter with fries and a 20 oz Pepsi. There were holes in the side of the styrofoam to help vent and it did just that. The cheese steak was delicious and the fries were nice and crispy! We will definitely be adding this to our regular rotation. Sorry no picture of the mozz sticks they were so good we ate them down too fast! read more

First time trying this place and I'm not sure I'd order there again. Granted, the order was delivered (through Door Dash) so I wasn't expecting it to be piping hot but when I can order food from further away and it's arrives really warm I kind of expected warm food. The chicken cheesesteak(definitely ADD extra meat to the order)had a good flavor at least but the bun was mostly stale and I'm not sure they added the extra cheese I paid for. Curly fries would have been delicious if they were at least warm (the honey mustard sauce was yummy though). My sister said the same thing about her cheesesteak and she was missing a Canada Dr Birch Beer which I'm not sure was deducted from the total bill. All in all, I'm glad I tried them even if I never order there again. read more

Call your order ahead, and they will have your order ready in the time received. Cheesesteaks are comparable to Malin's Deli. If you don't like the soggy roll, then don't do it. But if you are cheesesteak guru like me, they do a fantastic job for a Philly style sandwich. Their wings are more like crispy wings, which is a plus for me. I'm a big fan of Brookside Country Maid. Twenty six years ago, single and living in Newark, I walked into Country Maid looking to buy a sub. I immediately fell in love with this combination deli/grocery-convenience store. The large flat top (griddle), fryer and broader then normal menu immediately showed that this was not just some corner deli. They make excellent breakfast sandwiches, by the way. The home fries are made fresh. You can even get scrapple as one of your meat offerings. Their subs are meaty and fresh, whether cold or hot. Cheesesteaks are excellent, by Delaware standards. As expected, items like the burgers are cooked fresh, although they aren't made in the store but are standard, pre-frozen restaurant items. Skip the seafood. Nothing special there, just breaded, fried, frozen. I've been told they made the macaroni salad themselves. I can believe that. It's a little on the bland side. No problem. A little salt & pepper, maybe some Old Bay and you're good to go. For something really special, try the house made chicken salad. We buy it by the pound ($7.99) and take it home. Really top notch. Outstanding! Pack lunches for work or school? Brookside Country Maid offers four really great "lunch specials", all in the neighborhood of $10 - $11, all featuring pounds of lunch meat and cheese, one even includes a loaf of bread. Oh. And they deliver. So I can sit home, order a late Sunday breakfast, get subs, salads and platters for supper or watching the game and get lunch makings for the week. Area for improvement? Since they are delivering to me anyway, why not add items like milk, bread, chips, ice cream, and grocery items to the delivery menu? read more

I can't believe I ate here for the times I did. Was in the News Journal, Newark Post and on the news for being shut down. Dead rats in corners, live and dead roaches everywhere including food prepping areas. Holes in floors and walls. Cigarettes place down next to food being prepped to cook. Overall bad place to go to. Just got a sub here. Worst sub ever. Very little meat and cheese. Roll was so water logged it fell apart in my hands. Veggie were like leftovers from a day old salad. Save yourself the heartache and possibly food poisoning and go down the road to the country maid on the corner of Salem Church and Chestnut Hill or the one a little further in University Plaza. These reviewers must have some personal connection to employees there. Honestly this country maid is just a run down dirty deli. Im not sure why its still in business as many run down dirty poor service stores are still in operation. Absolute garbage, taste was offensively mediocre, and it gave me literally, with no sense of hyperbole, literally the worst indigestion of my life. I have a fairly tough stomach and very very rarely have any sort of intestinal problems from food, let alone the absolute raging torrent which rushed from my bowels with a fury the likes of which I have never known. This places food had me doubled over in agony on my toilet when normally even the most dubious foods rarely leave me with even so much as bad gas. read more

Damned good Deli, and damned good prices. And they even deliver! Yeah, it's not a 5 Star French Restaurant, but, it's an old-fashioned corner deli. Simple, convenient, and affordable. That other reviewer who calls it dirty needs to check the prep areas. They are clean and well maintained. I've never had an issue with cleanliness here. It's not the best organized, but it's just a simple corner deli, I don't need aisle markers or super modern shelving units. I expect a decent sandwich made to order, a small tub of potato salad, a bag of chips, and a cold drink from the cooler, for under $10. And that's what I get. I don't know the people that run the place, but I do frequent the place, because it's a great lunch stop. Just like the corner delis in the big cities, only with Newark, DE class pricing. read more
