Casual. Cheap. Delicious. Huge. What else does a good restaurant need? I have been coming here for a very long time, ever since it was a 10x10 shack across the street from its now quaint building. I have had everything on the breakfast menu but now I get the same thing every time. 2 eggs over medium, home fries, 2 sausage patties, and buttered wheat toast. An american staple breakfast that is hard to mess up but as equally difficult to make phenomenal. The owner has maintained fair prices and huge prices and has always maintained fast service. Delicious food, friendly and fast service, reasonable prices-it's a gem in my opinion. Plan on arriving early to avoid a wait, as they are always busy with a crowd of regulars. Food is delicious and plentiful. If you are looking for a perfectly folded omelette with a parsley garnish and fancy potatoes, this is not the place for you. If you want a plate full of food, hot and loaded with flavor (I am addicted to the Greek omelette), this is your joint. I took my dad here in 2012 looking for a unique place to eat breakfast that we might both enjoy. He was living with me at the time in Dublin and it was about a 15 minute drive from the house....all I remember at the time is that is was not worth the drive.....I happen to find myself living 2 miles away in 2019 and thought I would give it another try....still not worth the drive....greasy tasteless bacon, bland potatoes, stale toast, server did not know the difference between whole milk and 2%...it was OK as far as being close as there is no Bob Evans or a unique place near by......but I read reviews such as "best breakfast in Columbus" and find it laughable....nothing special here. It's important to realize this isn't some ritzy, hip restaurant. It's a homey, no fuss, consistent breakfast/ lunch spot- and after countless visits it has never disappointed. The servings are huge and the pricing is fair. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu with sausage.. I especially recommend a sausage and cheese omelet, and even more so the sausage gravy and biscuits- I continually crave this dish all the way across the country. Their french toast are also amazing- the bread used will truly make you wish all french toast was made the same way. The coffee is always fresh and the waitresses make sure your mug stays full. Hellas is an obvious Greek family owned small hole in the wall, but don't judge a book by its cover... I've been coming here since I was in high school, but I realized moving away for college I crave it almost every Sunday. I have only ordered breakfast so can only speak on that behalf. When receiving my first two,two and two plate(2 eggs, 2 pancakes, 2 pieces of bacon/sausage), the pancakes looked so perfect with the melted butter on top I couldn't help myself but indulge. The pancakes are crispy I almost want to call them "fried." They are unreal! This is also the only restaurant I will eat eggs at... I don't even like eggs, but something about Hellas that never seems to stop me. Not only are their pancakes amazing, their fresh toast comes made with thick French bread. They are mountainous! I tend to flip a coin to figure out which of the two to order. Just recently I ordered their Greek omelet on a whim and it was as expected, AMAZING! It's a baked ham with mushrooms (I removed) and roasted tomatoes with fresh wonderful feta cheese to top it off. So next time your in town, do yourself a favor and please give this wonderful place a visit. You won't be disappointed. read more

What a wonderful experience, like stepping into another time. The atmosphere was calm and inviting, from the stone floor to the exceptional service. I felt as though Time slowed and I could just inhale the moment. I ate a bowl of orzo ham vegetable soup "made by the 80 year old Greek." I have always been treated rudely but endure this place because it is nearby, and the food is excellent. A number of years ago, I went into the restaurant and ordered two breakfasts to go. My son had broken his leg, and I wanted to bring home the breakfast to him and enjoy it with him. Demos told me "we're too busy... No takeout." When I tried to use logic with him and say we are not going to take up a seat we are just going to patronize your restaurant and take the food to go. At that point he loudly said "no food for you ". This was done in front of the entire restaurant, so I paused and faced the folks in the restaurant and said "has anyone ever seen Seinfeld episode the soup Nazi? Here it is..." I love the relaxed, non-pretencious atmosphere, and solid good food. There are not a million options which is great because it gives the menu and concept focus which helps make the food and service that much better. The no fuss decor and easy going staff make it seem like you are eating at a friends house which is a great and welcoming feeling. Went there early yesterday morning, Saturday. I swear they were using the home fries and biscuits from the day before , because they were dry and cold. Omelette was good, but I have to tell you this place is run by the most unfriendly group of individuals I've ever seen in a restaurant. Nobody looked at me or said hi or good morning when I arrived. Watched my waitress eat half of her breakfast before she took the time to come see what I might want. Went to Hellas a few times, and was often met with a lot of attitude from some of the servers. By and large, they don't listen to simple instructions and get fussy when the same thing is asked over and over. On one visit, I counted no less than eight screw-ups. But worse than this is how I was treated by the cook, Demo. He asked, "Why do you have a handicapped sticker on your car? You don't look handicapped. Is that not your car?" Never mind that it's a disabled veteran plate for service-connected injuries, with the word "veteran" in all caps. I just responded by asking if he was a doctor. And by the way, I wasn't parked in a handicapped spot. Players take on the demeanor of the coach, which explains why this place is such a disaster. read more

So this may sound confusing but it is TRUE. Ordering chicken salad on a Hellas salad isn't a menu choice. What you have to do is order the AVACADO Salad without avacado. That salad comes with either chicken salad or tuna salad as a topper. It's like Jack Nicholson trying to order plain toast (it isn't on the menue) from the movie "5 Easy Pieces". He orders the chicken salad sandwich, no butter, no mayonaisse, not lettuce..... then asks the waitress to hold the chicken salad. Well, it's not difficult. And the chicken salad on salad (hold the avacado) is delicious. And as a bonus I tried the black-eyed peas and sausage soup today (gumbo sans dirty rice). Fantastic. Hellas is great. It's always packed on Sat and Sun but the wait is a lot quicker than you think it is going to be. The food is great and the portion sizes are huge. There omlets and home fries are enough to split between two people. The home fries could use a little more seasoning but there is a bottle of hot sauce on the table which helps out. Their biscuits and gravy is awesome! The service is great and food comes out very fast no matter how busy they are. read more

Horrendous service. Walk in no one greets us. We wait there for 20 minutes and finally get seated. We sit another 45 minutes still with no food. I inquire and they hadn't even put the order in. I ask and they just respond that they are slow. She goes to check on food and doesn't come back. We leave . Overall wasted over an hour here. Do not go to this place!! read more

I don't understand this place. My family all ordered the half order of biscuits and gravy, and I got the full order. When it came to the table IT WAS THE SAME EXACT THING. When we go the bill, mine was 4 dollars more. I asked what the difference was and that I would like to be charged for the half order and she said "this is how the brothers have always been doing it, so you will have to take it up with them." We just ate there this morning for the first time with our 14 month old son. We loved it!!! Th staff is incredibly nice and the omelettes were huge and delicious !!! Reviews from another site tricked my husband and I into thinking it was a good idea to stop here with our 6 yr old son for an early lunch before the zoo.  Boy, were those reviews wrong!  Every single employee seemed depressed and miserable being there.  It was weird getting a table.  There was no clear signage about if we were supposed to seat ourselves or wait for a hostess, etc.  It was cramped and we ended up being right near people who were seated and eating while waiting for a table for our party of 3.  A waitress finally acknowledged us and wiped down a table so we could sit.  It's charming enough on the outside (an old house) but inside there was no charm whatsoever.  It's a bunch of cramped tables and uncomfortable chairs in what used to be a living room and probably dining room.  You could see the ugly back area where dirty dishes etc were placed.  The grumpy older man had an attitude when a waitress said she could help him do something (clear the dirty stuff?).  This place was cold as ice as far as atmosphere goes.   There were tons of kids there but the restaurant didn't offer kids meal or smaller portions so my son's breakfast ended up costing us a small fortune.  The apple juice we ordered for him was $3 and came in a large glass bottle.  Waaay overpriced.  It took at least 25 minutes to get our food, probably over 30 minutes.  While we waited, we looked further at the reviews on the other site and saw several that said they had unfriendly service and overheard the grumpy old man saying racist comments to customers!?  The reviews were from 1 yr ago, 8 months ago, a month ago, etc. so its clear that this is consistent behavior from this grumpy old man.  How awful.  I was definitely on guard since we are people of color.  Luckily nothing like that happened to us and we didn't observe anything either.  Back to the food....How can it take that long to make breakfast food?  Pancake batter should have been prepped.  Eggs are just cracked and cook in a few minutes.  This part was so painful....just waiting in a depressing setting....FINALLY the food came out.  While it was good enough, it didn't make up for the wait and the unfriendly staff.  Even as cramped as it is, they have you go up to wait in line and pay when you are done.  Seriously?!  The cashier/waitress didn't ask the standard "how was everything?" because she probably knew what my answer would be.  I would never ever go back and I would never ever recommend this place to my friends/family.  On the flip side I will forewarn people to stay away from this place. read more

The food is good, but the old owner is rude as hell. This afternoon he was making fun an Hispanic family seated about 10 feet from where he was speaking (loudly). He came back a few minutes after and spoke directly to the family's young son. When the boy did not reply, he asked, "Does he speak English?" The family answered that he did not. The owner replied, "Sure, he speaks English". The family responded again that he did not and the owner said, "Well, get him into to school. He'll learn". Also, a table next to me complained to the owner that the air vent in the ceiling was dripping on them from condensation. Instead of apologize and correcting the issue, he said, "Yep. It's real humid outside." and walked off without doing anything. If you talk with others who go to this restaurant you will inevitably hear a story of the owner and his "outspokenness". Quirky is one thing, but in my opinion this man crossed the line, and I am not easily offended. Keep him away from the customers or this type of interaction will start to hurt business. read more

Avoid this place like the plague! Although the food was decent, my wife noticed that they had charged us 10% extra on our bill. When we pointed out the mistake to the waitress, we were told that because food prices had gone up, the owners instructed her to add 10% to all customer bills! When we complained that the prices were higher than the menu prices, we were told that they had posted the new "policy" on one of the walls. She was right ... there was a small sheet of paper with a typewritten notice near the bathroom. It said the policy went into effect over a month ago. Shame on them for not updating their menus and not having the waitress tell customers about higher prices BEFORE they eat. My guess is most people don't notice the overcharge and walk out without knowing they've been taken. I will never go to this rip-off joint again again. read more

No food could make up for the rude staff. They did not greet or acknowledge us as we arrived or waited for a table for about a half our. I had to ask if we could wait for a table then all I got was an OK. Other diners were finished eating and paid but just sat talking or reading newspapers. After awkwardly waiting, feeling like intruders, we left to find somewhere that wanted to sell a good dining experience and food. Beware - must be a man in order to receive acceptable service from waitress Nicole. From the moment my party of 3 females walked in we were ignored and treated as if we were a bothersome to Nicole. Sat down at a table that apparently wasn't acceptable, was thrown utensils and napkins, finally placed our orders after Nicole approached other parties who came in after us and were served drinks and food before our order was even placed. A member of my party asked for a small side of the special of the day and we were met with Nicole's unwillingness to deliver and instead recommended she order something else. We get it, it's the industry, but we are just trying to give you our money! Food came up with our check and naturally Nicole decided to refill our drinks after we paid. Nicole - you put the Hell in Hellas. If you can't simply put a smile on your face when your paycheck walks in the door, then you need to be the one to leave. read more

First, let me start by saying I love, love, LOVE the food at Hellas. Its the breakfast food you dream about. I've never had a bad meal. However, today marks the second time I've left the restaurant after ordering and waiting over 45 minutes for food. On this particular occasion, when we arrived (with two small children), there were two parties of 2 waiting for tables. They both let us jump them in line when a 4-top opened up. However, it took so long for a server to clear the table and take our order (we were ready to order upon entry), we watched the other two parties be seated, order, receive food, eat, pay their tabs and leave. We also watched approximately 6-8 other tables who were seated after us receive their food, eat AND LEAVE. Meanwhile, our AWOL server didn't so much as acknowledge the fact that we were waiting. We ordered our food at 10:30 am. My daughter was nearly in tears at 11:10 out of hunger. We left at11:15. It was my birthday today. I can't express the disappointment or the outrage at the waste of time. I'll go to bed dreaming about the green tomato and cheddar omelette, but I can't believe how many other tables I watched today who received service while we received none. read more

Just went to Hella's for the first time and although we had to wait 10 minutes for our waitress, the food came out quickly and was really good. The disappointing part was when my husband went to pay our bill, he over heard the owner talking to some other patrons. Not only did he curse several times during the conversation, but he said several racist comments about Mexicans and African Americans. To me that is unacceptable. read more
