Whitefish's best Apres Ski bar... Hellroaring Saloon is Whitefish... It's such an unassuming, laidback mountain side bar/grill with great food and drink selections. The same owners (the curly hair cougar and friendly older gentleman) have owned/run this place for years and have kept the vintage "ski feel"... The moment you walk in, it's like going back in time to the 80s. Hellroaring has solid gastropub fare (nachos, soups, sandwiches, salads, etc) for lunch and Apres Ski, along with more high-end fare for dinner. We've been coming to Whitefish for 10 years and Hellroaring is/has been one of our favorite places in town... Must stop when on Big Mountain. read more

This is THE PLACE to visit in Whitefish! Adam (Manager) is an absolute GEM to work with and can't speak more highly about their service, food, drinks, ambiance, etc. My husband and I ended up hosting our wedding welcome party here (after visiting a few times apres skiing previous years) for around 80 guests and it was the highlight of the weekend. If you're looking for a place to host an intimate gathering (party, reception, etc) - Hellroaring Saloon is THE place. Guests said this was their favorite part of the weekend. Food was immaculate, drinks flowed, and service was top notch. Thank you Adam, Cory, and the entire Hellroaring staff for making this night one we will never forget. I really like this place and the service is what saved this for us. We ordered the beet salad, which was excellent. We also ordered the bison, short ribs, which were tough. The top layer of the short rib ribs was harder than leather,and inedible, as if the top part of the short rib was braised out of liquid with the lid off for too long or seared too hard. I was surprised the kitchen did not notice the condition of the short rib and allowed it to be served. This is a fun place to eat, and normally the food is very very good. This is a super cool place to hang with your friends or family when you need a break off the slopes! The music started off with Louie Armstrong blues to classic easy rock and then some 80's flowed in. Lots of memorabilia and great views from the patio. Primitive and rustic. Lots of locals and vacationers mixing and enjoying each other. All staff were amazing, friendly and professional and wanting to please to give you the BEST experience! We were a table of three. We ordered the following: Wapiti Smash (The Elk Smash Burger) with a side of Green Chili- the burger was cooked medium and was juicy and NOT dry. It had a spread of Boursin cheese and truffle sauce on this plump toasted bun with kale as the greens. All ingredients were on point. The Green chili was unique and tasty. Not too spicy and had a dollop of sour cream. All delicious! (Enough for two people or one hungry person) Moe Snow- grilled cheese with bacon on Texas toast. This is huge and enough for two people. 2 hour wait for a large group for Friday lunch. Mediocre food. Service 1/10: There was a half hour wait to get seated followed by over an hour of waiting for the food after we ordered it. I was starving. Not enough staff during peak ski season. We received the nachos at the same time as the entrees which probably contributed to the long wait. Very disappointed to lose that much ski time on the mountain. Nachos supreme 7/10: Giant portion but toppings weren't mixed very well. We didn't even realize there were refried beans until we'd eaten most of the platter. Bison smash 4/10: Patty was dry but I liked the kale. Duck ham gnocchi with butternut squash 2/10: This was the special they had that day. The squash was hard and undercooked while the gnocchi was overdone and completely turned to mush in the mouth. Not a great texture. The duck ham was cured duck which you can't go wrong with though. Overall I would not come back here and would recommend either going with a small group or not during peak lunch hour. read more

We eat here every time we visit whitefish ski resort. Lunch and dinner. They are not open for dinner every night and the menu changes seasonally. Dinner is good, the mushroom bruschetta was fantastic! We almost ordered two! We also enjoyed the swordfish special which was delicious but small portion size, and the dessert special. If they have any dessert option that includes their custard you must get it! Yum! But if you can only eat here once I highly recommend lunch. There are more lunch menu items and so far everything we've tried has been great and good portions. The soup is always good, we've also had the chicken sandwich, BLT Salad, and nachos. Ive posted the dinner menu but keep in mind it changes! The dinner menu they have online has also ended up being different than the actual menu we got at the table so just come hungry and with an open mind read more

Hellroaring Saloon is a good aprés ski option with reasonable drinks and food, but every time I go, I am stunned by how indifferent the service is. My husband and I were told the last time we went that they won't seat people who are only having drinks, and yet the time before that, we were seated despite stating that we were only having drinks. They have a huge sign up, stating all the rules of the place, won't seat incomplete parties, and generally have a bad attitude towards their customers. I know they are busy and have limited space, but I always feel like an inconvenience to them when I'm there. Sure, I'll go back, but honestly, most days I just head into town for an aprés beer. I don't love being treated like I'm doing something wrong just by trying to give a place my business. read more

We have been coming to Big Mountain for 25 years and stopping in to Hellroaring with friends and family every year to eat lunch or have apps and a beverage. This year was no exception. Thursday afternoon, my husband and I decided to stop skiing at 3 and go and have a 2 for 1 beer (my husband and family all have the Hellroaring hats which provide this special deal). We got the 2 beers, paid 8 bucks and went to sit outside in the back. Shortly after sitting down, a manager came to our table and advised that the 2 for 1 beer MUST be consumed by the person who ordered the beer! That means my husband or I would have had to drink both the beers, something we would never do. How is it that an eating and drinking establishment has the right to tell you how you are to consume the food or beverage that you have paid for? I was really disappointed in how rude the manager was to us and will not be back any time soon. I also told everyone on the shuttle about this experience and shared with family members too. Took an hour to sit down. Not great service. Napkins took 30 minutes to get, the nachos (which is what they are known for) had a 45 minute wait to get any nachos, and dropped food as it was served. The food ended up taking this long and the experience overall was not great. Management is clearly lacking as the only good part was the food. It seems to be a common problem amongst other people and their reviews. I wouldn't ever return here and while the other reviews do seems to be very mixed expect problematic you do show up. Parking was a problem for us and overall the total dining time was about 3 hours which took away a considerable about of time away from skiing. If you plan on waiting the hour wait to be seated especially if you're in a larger party then just know the seating arrangement for waiting is overcrowded and not worth it in the slightest. read more

Have stopped here the last three days for lunch while skiing in Whitefish. The staff is nice but they are adamant about having your whole party there before you sit down. So don't expect to be seated and wait for everyone else to show up. I'm sure this has to do with COVID, and heavy traffic through the restaurant during lunch hour! The beer is great as is the food. The nachos could feed an army and have a variety of toppings. The Italian sausage grinder is full of flavor but downs leave you feeling too full. The pulled pork sandwich is ok but feel lacked some flavor. All in all will be stopping here throughout the week and am looking forward to doing so. AFTER a pleasant morning skiing on the mountIan my girlfriend and i went into this establishment for lunch. After ordering our food, and it arriving quickly we had not finished out drinks before MARGARET placed out check on the table and told us her job is to turn and burn table, she did not care about the customers. After speaking to a hostile manager and being called a F$%%chin Bitch by Margaret we left. Not at all family friendly and the service after speaking to manager and MARGARET was deplorable. There are other options Hellroaring was HELL all right but not in a good way. Margaret clearly need to find another profession and the wait staff is clearly there to move you through your meal as quickly as possible without any interest in your experience as a patron. This is the best spot on the mountain to relax for lunch and a beer after a long morning of skiing / snowboarding. The atmosphere is so great. There are plenty of beers on tap. If you have a group of 4+, get the nachos. They are IMMENSE. We went there multiple times, and we also had a sausage pasta and a pastrami sandwich. All good. I really like the atmosphere. The hostess is super friendly if you're waiting for a table. I really recommend sitting at the bar, though. The bartender (Chuck, I think?) is a friendly guy, and all the Big Mountain skiers are super friendly - you'll probably stumble upon some good conversation. Another fantastic stop on the slopes (lilterally) of Big Mountain. You can get everything from a warm me up shot or beer to a nice sit-down dinner. We were skiing, so we had a plate of nachos to split and their half sandwich and cup of soup special. It was a fantastic pastrami sammy and I upgraded to their green chili. So delicious! The nachos are almost too big. In fact, for us it was too big. It came out the size of two our heads! When I go back, we'll definitely opt for the half sized order. Dont forget to try out the rotating beer on nitro. Ours was a stout and it was just what we needed for a few more hours of hard charging the trees on the mountain! read more

The stew with mashed potatoes was nearly perfect. A little more vegetables & meat would be nice. After a hard day of skiing it was great. The drinks were strong & cheap! The daughter: I think that the menus has a great variety for meat eaters but only has one item that is vegetarian accessible or if you order off the kids menus then some items open up and the kids Mac and Cheese was actually really delicious and I loved that it came with some fresh carrots and celery. I think having a soup that was vegetarian or a chili with that mashed potato topping would be an excellent addition to their menus and provide more for people who are either vegetarian or just don't want meat in their dish. The service here is amazing, all the waiters are so friendly and the atmosphere of the place really puts you in a good mood as all this memorabilia surrounds you and I wish I could just sit there and read all the little news articles. My friend and I stopped in for lunch and told 4 other friends to join us there. We arrived early so we went to a table and enjoyed a tasty cup of chili beer and glass of wine. We were given the check prior to ordering a second round of drinks. We mentioned we had other friends coming could we move to a larger table. We put our friends name on the wait list and chose to remain seated at our table. When the server brought us our 2nd round of drinks she told us we had to leave the table and stand in the lobby and have our drinks. We asked to see a manager and believed the issue had been cleared up only to have our server, Margaret, approach the table and begin to apologize saying the hostess gave her bad information. We let her know that as a person working in the service industry and customer facing that telling patrons they must vacate a table is not a way to treat customers to which she responded, 'I'm here to churn and burn tables and make money, I don't care." If that were not enough, as we left the restaurant and saw our four other girlfriends who were asking us about what had happened because we could not be seated together our server in a loud voice called us "f*+=ing b*+^%#es. I've worked in the service industry for years and certainly have been in situations where customers are not satisfied but I have never witnessed a server verbally assault patrons. What was supposed to be a great afternoon among girlfriends that traveled from Texas, Maryland and Illinois to visit our friend that lives in Whitefish was truly regrettable. I had a beautifully prepared marlin filet with roasted red potatoes and green beans with a Hell Roaring Amber from Blackstar Brewing Co. Very good and apparently family-run restaurant on the hill at Whitefish ski resort. Had two dinners and two lunches here during a week-long ski trip, and hands down the best thing I ordered was the pastrami sandwich. The smoked salmon Nicoise salad was good, too, and the salmon looked to be home-smoked! I had a duck entree served on pasta that was OK. I liked the chicken piccata better. Hellroaring is an established icon on the mountain, but as the building itself, it's slowly going downhill year after year. It's a great place for lunch or a beer, but DO NOT waste your time or money for the dinner menu. The service has gone downhill, as soon as you walk in the door from the hostess to the bartender to the waitstaff. Have dined here three times this past month since friends really wanted to go there, and each time I say will be the last, except if its for a beer or burger or nachos for lunch. The dinner menu is WAY OVERPRICED for the quality of food given, each time we waited over an hour for food, had attitude from the host & hostess and food was way overcooked and their dinner menu is not cheap! For the prices they charge for dinner at Hellroaring I'll go to Cafe Kandahar, where you know you'll always get an awesome meal. It's sad to see such an icon go downhill as Hellroaring, but I think they rely on it's history & location and not too much on the quality & price of their food. read more

What a fantastic restaurant on the edge of the slopes! I had the Carne Colorado Steak and my girl had the Cuban Cowboy steak. If I had another Moose Drool beer on board, I may have licked my plate.
