You told me to pay it via PayPal, which I cannot do unless you send an invoice. Unprofessional. You are being incredibly discourteous and overtly insulting, bordering on abusive. Continue to delude yourself by saying you offer "exceptional service", no one believes you after they read the excuses you continue make about your inept company. You are talking about tipping now? When we moved from LA to Philly a year ago, we suffered the misfortune of being unable to fit our couch, carted lovingly cross-country, through our new, minuscule doorway. In an act of haste and poor judgement, I purchased a "vintage" couch from a second-hand shop in the neighborhood. The couch was not to our personal taste, but it would fit through the door. While it did fit, barely, the couch had a lingering air of dead people and curry. It also started to rapidly deteriorate once we removed the plastic coverings. Yellow clumps and particulates were everywhere- it was disgusting. However, since this was my impulse buy, my, more sage-like, better half refused to let me go out and buy another until we made absolute, 100% sure, that the new couch was to our taste, was within a reasonable budget, and would fit through our tiny doorway. I agreed, reluctantly, and covered the couch with about a million blankets. Yes, yes, this story does have a point. We finally found the perfect couch that met all the criteria laid out by one stubborn person.Of course, the dream couch was in Fishtown, and we live in West Philly. Without a car. And we live on the second floor, which, no, is not that big a deal, but, darn it, we just didn't want to move a couch. Enter Helping Hands, and my new favorite person, Darryl. Darryl did everything for us. He came to our apartment, and right away all feelings of apprehension of letting a stranger into our home were dispelled. Darryl and his assistant took away the offending couch first. He had to break the legs to get it out (the frame had begun to sink towards the back; the couch really was the most awful couch in the world), but he got it out, and took it to the dump, where it truly belonged. While he picked up my new couch, I had the opportunity to finally rid the house of the yellow dust. He brought the new couch, set it up, and even fluffed the cushions for me. It was fast, painless, and at a more than reasonable rate. But what this story cannot denote is the character of the owner of this company. He has a calming air about him. He coached his assistant through the entire process with patience and ease; his voice always remained even-keeled, and you could visibly see how this bolstered his assistants confidence during the more tricky moments of the event. Over an hour late (although they called several times, updating me). Hired to move 9 pieces of furniture (no boxes). It took them SIX HOURS. Only one piece of furniture needed to be disassembled (a king sized bed)... the two young movers were sent with A SINGLE manual, non-ratcheted screwdriver between them. I had them helping unloading my truck when we moved back to Philly in June. Here is a summary of my experience: Pros: Available: As all the other reviews mentioned, scheduling was easy because Darryl almost always answered his phone or texted you back within a few hours. (In my experience this is rare for movers) Very Reasonable price Work fast: The two people that helped us worked hard and fast, and did not take any breaks or even slow down for the 1.5 hours when they were working. Cons: Not on time: I asked him multiple times during the scheduling to confirm the time, (I knew it was a busy day for movers), he always told me whatever time I prefer was fine with him. Yet, the day before moving (at 11 pm) he texted me and saying that they might be 15 min to 2 hours late. And they did show up 2 hours late, and that was why it only took them 1.5 hours to unload half of the truck... Not very careful with the furniture: After the move, we found a couple of miner scratches on the large furniture and some on the walls (the walls are in colors, therefore the scratches become more apparent). In sum, if your time is relatively flexible and your stuff is carefully packed, I think you would have a pleasant experience with them. read more

So I had used Helping Hands in the past and was pleased. They arrived a little late but #1 they called and #2 it was within their arrival window. They came in and got right to work. It was an extremely hot day but they knocked it out without complaint. The only thing - I paid cash and they didn't have any receipts. I asked for one to be emailed, but never received it. All things considering, the move was done to my satisfaction so I cannot hold that against them. Fast forward: My mom was moving. So I recommended them. They set the date for 11/2/16. That morning, my mom received a call that they could not come! The driver had to go out of town. They offered to come the next day but in the meantime they said they'd call around to see if they go get someone else! OH NO, I felt so bad because I recommended them and told my mom how good they were. I started panicking and calling people myself. Overall we had a great experience with Helping Hands Philly. For a four bedroom local move they estimated two movers working roughly 4-7 hours. We ended up closer to 7 hours, but that was because we have no shortage of things! Both movers arrived right at the scheduled start time and were courteous and friendly. They always asked before moving anything in question. They were thoughtful and careful in how they handled large items. To that end, nothing was scratched or damaged despite some very tight corners and bulky items. We've moved quite a few times over the years and Helping Hands rates among the best. read more

I have to say, this is the most efficient moving I've ever experienced. I made a reservation at 12:30pm. I arrived half an hour earlier at the loading place. Guess what? The moving helpers were already there. The loading place is at the second floor. Hallway and stairs are steep and only let one person walk at a time. Very horrible service on 6/2/21017. They come across as professional, easy going, however in the end 90% of my furniture was damaged (which was only a year old), along with the home I moved out of & the apartment I moved to. They were 3 hours late, the "experienced mover" kept spilling his sports drink all over the place and taking smoke breaks; the person he was "training" didn't know what the heck he was doing- INEXPERIENCED MOVERS (did not come prepared with tools, didn't pack anything -fortunately I had 90% of my belongings already packed- broken/scraped/destroyed my furniture during the disassemble & move)... Very aggressive regarding payment, which is demanded when they are ready to stop (whether services are rendered or not) and before they exit your premises. I have been trying to get a resolution regarding my damaged property & poor service (in addition to not packing or reassembling my belongings as were requested in my service request, the movers left some of my packed belongings at the property I moved from, proceeded to the new address without a go ahead from me and refused to go back to get it, therefore I had to be charged by my previous landlord & my items were trashed). The owner of this company has become unreachable at this point, therefore I am considering taking this matter into legal hands. read more

About 2 1/2 weeks ago, my Mother relocated here to Lansdowne from Massachusetts and I found Helping Hands through a referral made on the U-Haul website while booking our truck for the move. We reserved Darryl's services and from the onset he was very friendly, courteous and accommodating. We were unsure of the exact time we would arrive with the truck into PA, and he assured us that he would be available when we did. We were able to give him a better approximation once we were in the area. Basically my Mom needed Helping Hands to transfer the items on the U-Haul truck into storage. Darryl arrived with a crew member (Michael? I believe that's his name) and the two of them went right to work and were done in an hour and 15 minutes! They both were very friendly, quick, efficient and quite professional in handling some of the delicate items she wanted handled a certain way. My mom is a senior and actually fell at the site and Darryl immediately went to her aid to make sure she was okay and not injured. I was quite impressed with his level of concern and compassion. He even went the extra mile to travel to my house in order to help bring some bins and a few boxes she was keeping there inside. To say we truly appreciate having Helping Hands assist us would be an understatement. Darryl and his helper were a tremendous blessing to our family during this move. They really made this transition for my Mom go smoothly and relieved any stress and anxiety she felt wondering how it was all going to get done. We will definitely be contacting Darryl and Helping Hands in the near future to assist us again once she is ready to move into her own place in the area. read more

I called Helping Hands after a positive experience my sister had with them during a move a few weeks earlier. Darryl was a pleasure to deal with and great at communicating all the necessary specifics. I called on a Monday afternoon and was able to procure help on that very next Saturday and Sunday. The gentleman who showed up were both courteous, polite, and hard workers. The job was to paint a picket fence and other than the few minutes they took to eat lunch, both gentlemen got to work and continued to work diligently the entire 5 hours they were hired for. The short story: Helping Hands puts profits over customer service, cost us hundreds of dollars in extra fees and hours of extra work because of their incompetence and unfair business practices. The full story: Weeks in advance of our move, we sent Helping Hands a full inventory of our items as well as a description of our walk up apt. so they would be prepared for the stairs. They arrived on the day of the move with not enough movers for the job, and with a truck that was far too small. One of the moving guys was on the phone with the co. for at least 30 minutes - that we were paying a lot of money for! - to try to explain to the manager, Darryl, that the truck simply didn't fit all the items. The move took at least 2 hours longer than necessary b/c of the time we had to waste playing tetris with large items in a too small truck at nearly 200 an hour. We still had to move multiple items that simply wouldn't fit into our own car to the storage unit, wasting hours of our time. The worst part was that when I complained to the manager, Daryl, he claimed that it was a legal problem to park a larger truck on our street - which is blatantly false; trucks park here all the time without a problem. When I pointed that out, he first tried to evade the issue, and then he admitted that it was simply a busy day and so he just sent what he had available, even though it could not possibly fit our stuff. One of our moving guys - who were really nice and doing their best under these circumstances, trying to make heavy furniture fit into a small truck under the blazing sun - straight up told me that this was the company's mistake. When hours passed and the costs started mounting, I called to ask Daryl for a discount b/c the extra time was a direct result of his poor business management. His response was to literally shout at me that we're "scamming" him and that we won't pay him - even though I never said that; I simply wanted to avoid paying extra for their mistakes - and he threatened to lock the truck down with our belongings. Under pressure, we paid in full. Do yourself a favor and avoid this company. While some people may have had a good experience, ours indicates that if anything goes wrong, even if it's the company's fault, they will not take responsibility and they will treat you terribly. Edit: Regarding the response from the movers - the extra items he notes were basically a few folding chairs and small, oddly shaped items that fit into the narrow spaces on top of the furniture in the truck where nothing else fit. It's a bit bizarre to emphasize these items instead of responding to any of the examples of horrible service I give in my description above. I can't say enough about these guys. I used them in May to move my household belongings from a storage unit in SW Philly to a house in Drexel Hill. Not only were they affordable, but they were professional through and through. I should note that my wife and I were originally going to use them at the end of April. However, due to a last minute glitch on the closing of the house, I had to postpone the move. I was nervous about calling them up, expecting to be cussed out. However, the owner, Darryl could not have been any nicer, and understanding. I was able to reschedule with no difficulty. They worked quickly, and took good care of our belongings. When I purchased a hutch for my kitchen that was too big to fit in my vehicle, I asked the store if they had someone they recommend. They were very enthusiastic in recommending HHHS. The first part of my experience was in scheduling the pickup and delivery: email address listed right on the card so I was able to get everything set up without getting on the phone. Perfect. I received a call a couple hours before the scheduled delivery where Darryl asked if it would be okay if they were a little earlier than planned. That never happens! Excellent. They moved the piece in easily and I paid a very reasonable amount for the service. I would use them again any time. read more

I hired Darryl and Helping Hands Household Services to move my 2-bedroom apartment into a house over 2 days and was extremely dissatisfied with the experience for three main reasons: (1) there was significant and unreasonable damage to my belongings and my newly renovated house, (2) Darryl lied to me about the moving truck, and (3) Darryl did not follow his own damages policy. More details about these main issues are provided below, but in short, Darryl was unprofessional and untrustworthy. (1) Damages: I documented 48 individual damages to my home and my belongings, including scratches on renovated hard wood floors; holes, dents and scuffs on the newly painted walls; scratches and dents on several pieces of furniture; and multiple holes in an expensive and sentimental leather chair. (2) U-Haul moving truck issue: As it was a 2-day move, Darryl arranged for the U-Haul truck to be rented overnight. The fee for the overnight truck rental was included in the price Darryl charged me. Day 2 of the move was scheduled for mid-afternoon. At 8:30 am Darryl texted saying that U-Haul needed the truck back immediately, so he was going to unload my belongings on the city sidewalk in front of my house. Without waiting for my assent, Darryl took the truck which I had reserved for my move, and my entire household's belongings sat on the sidewalk for over 6 hours. Darryl later indicated in an email that at the end of the day, at approximately 6:00 pm, he returned the truck to U-Haul. Darryl took the truck that was meant for my move to do another job on the side. Our mutually agreed upon price included the truck rental, which means not only did I not get my full value (since my belongings were left on the street prior to my mid-afternoon move time) but my fee supported another move's equipment. This is definitely unethical, if not illegal, especially because Darryl could have also charged the other client for the same truck. (3) Damages policy: Darryl and I discussed all of the damages and agreed upon a refund. When I followed up with Darryl about the refund he rescinded on paying back the agreed upon refund price. He told me that he used to have one policy, but now they have another, but in both cases did not provide any documentation/website/contract where the policy was stated. In summary, Darryl was utterly unprofessional, left my belongings on the street for 6 hours and before my contracted move time, and reneged on the policy and agreement for paying for damages. I would NOT recommend them to anyone. read more

Two very nice gentlemen showed up right on time! They unloaded our Uhaul very fast and carried the items up two flights of VERY narrow stairs. The service was fast and professional. When I made my plans to move I never considered the timing, college letting out. Very busy time, but called and Darryl gave me instruction on how to set an appointment. I was able to have the day and hours I wanted. Unfortunately the guys were late and I was worried, but they called after 10 minutes of lateness, and showed up 50 minutes later. They called a second time to notify me they were close to the residence alleviating my fears. The guys showed up and got right to work and completed the job in 2 hours. They helped cover the mattresses, helped pack the TV back into the box and moved everything and packed the POD efficiently. They took my large items off the second floor and were careful not to cause marks on the wall. Really great work. I appreciated the ease of setting the appointment and the convenience of prepaying with my credit card so there were no questions. They were terrible. First of all, they came late and instead of 2 people for a labor job, they only had one person. I felt so bad for this person as he realized he couldn't do it on his own and had to call his own brother to help him to move ONLY our furniture. I had the freight elevator for a limited time and so while I was waiting, I moved boxes and stuff myself. When he finally got help they damaged our bed, our couch and pretty much everything. To top it off, they were about to charge us for a 2.5 hour move when they only spent 1.5 hours moving. On a side note, they don't have insurance so be careful with these movers. This is my very first yelp review and I felt I had to share my experience to warn future patrons. I chose this moving service after seeing positive reviews on Yelp. The movers that showed up were small, young guys not strong enough the carry the furniture that was pre listed during my application. It was pre-discussed that it would be a 4th floor walk up and we ended up having to carry a lot of things ourselves because they were not able to handle it. One mover dropped my computer desk, snapping a leg, but since it was particleboard material,Darryl informed me that they were not liable for the damages and "furniture companies should be more candid about their furniture being fragile"The movers also had to be constantly reminded to read the boxes, as they were caught dropping boxes labeled fragile multiple times. Furthermore, the language that the movers used was completely unprofessional and made my family very uncomfortable because of the profanity and "n word" usage. Overall, I not only wasted my money hiring these movers, but lost money since I have to replace my 200$ computer desk. read more

We used them in June for a move from a 2nd floor walkup to a basement storage area. The move went very well. We had a lot of stuff (especially heavy book boxes) and the movers worked for close to four hours, even though it was their second moving job of the day. Their energy (understandably) flagged a bit towards the end -- next time, we'll try to move earlier in the day when I know that I have a big move or ask for three people rather than two. We underestimated the size of our move and were not as prepared as we could have been when the movers arrived, so we're especially grateful for how accommodating they were and for how long they worked. The price was also very reasonable -- I paid much more for some exceptionally bad movers via Craigslist last year. Communication before the move was excellent and we were able to set up the move at very short notice. We'd be happy to use them again. read more
