I only did Nutriscan testing once December of 2016 and it definitely helped changing her diet to what Dr. Jean Dodds told me what proteins my Brandy 2 was to eat. Lamb, soy (organic) and probably goat. I been giving Raw Dog Hi Beef blend as they're the only raw dog food manufacturer in Hi. Bummer, NO lamb so I started buying lamb, esp quarters or lamb ribs for $18 lb at Whole Foods market in Kailua Hi. Lamb shoulders with no bone and wrapped in a net the best compared to Safeway Open Nature. Supposed to be all grass fed with no hormones, antibiotics, you know our meat and foods supply these days are tainted, unless you know and trust the store. Why is Open Nature lamb quarters or ribs a lot bigger than Whole Foods as theirs come from Australia but recently for almost 2 weeks, NO lamb in 2 Whole Foods on Oahu. I am reluctantly forced to buy Safeway Open Nature's but because it's so much larger, what you think? Back to Nutriscan as her itching never changed but her heavy panting definitely did, so I am going to have Brandy 2 do it again as they sent me the kit with the rope you'd swish around in their mouth, then put it in the SEALED plastic included. They're very sensitive, as Karen of Hemopet asked me if the rope was exposed to water, wow, it was and she said she'd send me another and received it. Cost? Darn worth it at $298. It has a lot to do with inflammatory responses, and it's results categorized as ........ Weak reaction, Borderline reaction, Intermediate reaction, Medium reaction, and Strong reaction, all under results, whether or not to AVOID. Like Rodney Habib said of all tests, this being the best as you get back results relating to even tid bits of inflammatory responses that we'd all like to avoid. And my 4 yrs and almost 9 months old AKC GOLDEN RETRIEVER, BRANDY 2, still INTACT, for health reasons, as I am not ever going to breed her, she has SIGNIFICANT IMPLICATIONS OF WHAT WOULD LOOK LIKE UNWARRANTED PANTING (from silica sand 3.5 YRS ago) and although drinking water through most direction triggers gagging, I know the best ways to give the important H2O...In humans with long term exposure to silica sand, w/o PROPER RESPIRATORY EQUIPMENT usually would later in life, be diagnosed with "lung cancer"...and we certainly don't want to go there, even though implicated symptoms suggests that direction. Interpreted results from radiologist, Dr. Sam Silverman said not in exact words but "bronchial pulmonary changes most likely from chronic inflammation of the lungs, maybe allergy related but I know it's from the silica sand even though she was definitely assaulted by veterinarians here with their protocols and with me not knowing that what we've been going through the past more than 3.5 YRS, now I know what vaccines, esp when given and already protected, definitely compromising their immune systems. I did ask for writers but I was coerced into saying, "okay" with what she said would be a "distemper, parvo" but when billed, I seen DAP, being distemper, Adeno, parvo.. lying bitch in Kailua at the time but I do forgive her as I am sure that if she knew it would have triggered ITCHINGS around 3 weeks later, despite she saying after that adverse reactions would take place 4 to 24 hrs after it was given. That was a LIE. I listened to Dr. Ronald Schultz, professor of veterinary immunology, University of Wisconsin for decades and he said adverse reactions can happen any time after vaccines administered. Adjuvants in vaccines are a major player with SIDE EFFECTS. (there's really no one that knows more on veterinary immunology than Dr. Ronald Schultz) Nutriscan definitely needed maybe twice a year to see of any possible changes with food sensitivities. I promise, when she was on a raw beef blend diet from our only raw food makers here in Hawaii, every time she ate, for example, lying down, not having any physical activity, she may be lying down in my back seat with air conditioning on, and for no reason, if it was not known related with silica sand, she'd pant or in other words, WAY TOO MANY BREATHS PER MINUTE, ALWAYS MAKING ME WORRY. After changing her diet to what Dr. Jean Dodds and her Hemolife Diagnostics team had released Brandy's results of, being lamb, probably goat, and soy, of which I have been giving her. I purchased a Nutriscan Diagnostic Saliva Test from W. Jean Dodds at Hemopet at 11561 Salinaz Avenue, Garden Grove, CA. I paid $268.20 for this kit. Only after receiving and taking the saliva sample of my dog did I discover at the very end of the form that the dog had to be off of Apoquel medication for a period of 2 weeks. At this point, the saliva I collected was worthless as my dog had been and was currently on Apoquel. I called and spoke to W. Jean Dodds and explained that my dog could not come off of Apoquel and that their test was no longer of use to me. She acknowledged that they don't advertise this very well, and also acknowledged that they had not incurred any expense as I never sent the kit in to be processed. They agreed to refund my $268.20. They did not process a refund. I then challenged it via Goldman Sachs / Apple credit card and was granted a refund which was later reversed when this company challenged back. I never submitted and never received any results from any test kit. This business did not incur any expense and they STOLE my $268.20. This is not a reputable business!! read more

Great with delayed vaccinations, solid information, as well as very attentive technicians who do pre-check and take your pet to the back room. They brought our Blue Nosed Pittie back from 'the edge'. He was so sick and depressed from skin disorder which other vets could not tackle, including a long distance alternative vet , and Dr. Lassin and Dr. Leumer and (Dr. Dodd in the wings) got him back to former self. I'd definitely recommend their allergy tests, it worked by defining exactly what our family member could tolerate. They are exceedingly prompt in emailing! Wow. We just adopted our 2nd Greyhound (Q-tip) this month and we love him! Betty and her staff, Jessica and Ken were excellent in letting us interact w/ each and every Greyhound that we were interested in. Betty typically provides some suggestions based on your life style, however she doesn't push. We narrowed our selection down to 3 dogs, one which didn't pass the "cat tolerance" test and another that was "iffy" w/ the cats. Q-tip was perfect and quite the Sweety-pie! They have a two visit policy to dissuade folks from making an impulsive selection and later end up returning an incompatible or unwanted dog. They also make sure the pets are spayed or neutered and have all of their shots prior to adoption. We live in Northern California but we are happy to make the 6 hour trek south because Hemopet is a cut above the rest! read more

I first came here as a recommendation from a friend when. During these COVID times I was not getting the proper care for my dog from another vet. I packed up both my dogs and off to Hemopet I went. The care there is very thorough. They listen to you and address your concerns by recommending what action to take. I got copies of blood work emailed to me and with explanations and what to do to start the process. They have their own labs so you get results within hours not days. My little Dog was given a diet that I cook and make for him. he's on medication too however I feel his overall health has improved. He's 12 and has arthritis ( that's what the meds are for) and needs to come on from time to time. I really feel comfortable and confident that he's in the best care. read more

Yelp keeps removing my reviews. I am a REAL customer. I am about to start posting all the bills I paid to prove it. Yelp can call me. Dr. Dodds, blood guru of the planet, MISSED the warning signs on my animal's blood tests. My animal just died of kidney disease, less than 3 months after having been told by Jean Dodds that her bloodwork and other lab tests were "normal". At the ER over Thanksgiving, they said (looking at the historical Hemopet blood tests), "your animal has had kidney problems for a long time". I said "no it hasn't, I just had bloodwork done at Hemopet". They showed me the numbers on the Hemopet reports and they were (I learned) right. Now I have a dead beloved pet to prove that Hemopet is a disaster. Jean Dodds is not even licensed as a vet in California, and I thought I could trust her bloodwork. But apparently not. I took my dog here to have his thyroid checked. One visit and I was hooked. Dr. Lassen and Dr. Dodd are amazing. They truly truly care about your dog. They are easy to talk to, make you feel so relaxed, you leave their office knowing these are people who take their work to the next level. The time and interest they spend with you and your dog is such a comfort. They e-mail their findings to you along with their plans for your dog, no need to take notes here. I highly recommend these doctors and their services to anyone who needs a veterinarian. The work they do with greyhounds is another amazing aspect of the services there. I am giving 2 stars instead of 1 because Jean Dodd answered my emails, although the actual content of the answers were unhelpful for my cat or in finding an answer to her condition. The consultation was very confused and confusing, lots of unrelated information was thrown at me, made to sound "expert-like", big names thrown around. But as soon as the information was reordered a bit, the truth of the matter became apparent... I am back to square one. I found the whole experience a bit shocking, I will never consult online again. Came here to adopt a rescue greyhound and noticed things were dirty and the dogs were in small cages. I asked why the dogs seemed so depressed and lethargic and wanted to know about the medical history of these dogs as that's a normal part of the adoption process. But instead of them being honest and forthcoming I was told to leave and that they don't have to answer my questions. That's clearly a red flag. The staff was rude for no reason as was the veterinarian I saw. I am a customer who traveled to California for this so I could give a loving home to a dog only to be lied to and turned away. There are so many horrible veterinarians in Los Angeles and I'm so grateful I found Hemopet via my canine liver disease support group. Dr. Jean Dodds who started the non-profit, is a pioneer in holistic treatments for dogs, especially those with liver disease. Dr. Adam Lassin, who works with her, is also superb. Together they have answered more questions via email at a lightning-fast response rate than any human doctor or veterinary doctor I've ever seen. Their simple suggestion to administer sub-q fluids at home saved the life of my 13.5 year old dog, Leo. No other vet thought of suggesting this, and another vet I consulted even poo-poo'd the idea as too time-consuming and cumbersome. A little background - Leo presented with sudden lethargy, inappetance and malaise in April 2016. We all thought it was his liver and that he was going to die, as he'd been diagnosed with a liver mass in November 2015 and given 3-6 months to live. Both Drs Dodds and Lassin suggested I learn how to administer Lactated Ringer's solution at home. He perked up immediately. Like a new dog. So he'd been dehydrated after a recent bout of vomiting and we just were so focused on his 'diagnosis' that we forgot the elemental basics - water. When I think about how fortunate I was to decide to make the 1.5 hour drive to see them when I did, I can't help but feel divinely guided. They are an incredible asset to the dog-loving community and will give you a perspective hard to find at your average veterinarian's office. You do not obviously need to implement everything they advise - I added in a few things selectively to see how Leo responded. Bottom line - what I like about these guys the most is that they're straight-forward, think outside the box, VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE, cost-conscious, HONEST! and have the most incredible customer service and patient experience. read more

TL;DR: Gave incorrect information. Made my dog's condition much worse. My experience is pretty similar to Joan T. from SF. I first had email consultations with Dr. Dodds after my regular vet said that my dog's UPC was too high (1.9 UPC, the vet said it should be .5 or below.) My dog is on a raw food diet, and I'd heard that Dr. Dodds is supposed to be an expert on raw food. She told me the values for raw food are different than kibble, and my dog's numbers were totally fine. She advised me that even though 1.9 was totally fine for a dog on a raw food diet (IT ISN'T) I should take her off of her flea medication and give her a product called FLEA TREATS instead. After following her advice for 3 months, my dog's UPC shot up from 1.9 to 2.8. She once again said she wasn't concerned with this 2.8 number. She said her BUN was also elevated due to the raw diet, which meant her creatinine was normal (I have/had no idea what all this meant. I just needed to know what to do for my dog. She said do nothing, her numbers were fine.) But luckily, I consulted with a dog nutritionist. He looked at the ingredients & said to take her off of FLEA TREATS immediately as they contained brewer's yeast which is terrible for dogs with kidney issues. I followed his advice, and within 2 months her UPC was back down from 2.8 to 2.0, nearly where we started at 1.9. Following the nutritionist's advice, I got her numbers down to 1.3/1.4. A month later, I went into Hemopet for a separate issue. For this consult, Dr. Kanbe was also present with Dr. Dodds. When they looked at my dog's records- the exact same records that Dr. Dodds had already seen from our email consults- she acted like she'd never seen them before & both she and Dr. Kanbe were adamant that these numbers were very bad. I said I was confused, how could these numbers suddenly be bad, they're better now than they were before? Dr. Kanbe & Dr. Dodds never acknowledged (even though I still have the emails) that Dr. Dodds repeatedly insisted there was no problem. I reiterated that my regular vet had been sounding the alarm for nearly a year, and I had been telling him not to worry b/c Dr. Dodds (the supposed expert) said everything was fine! Well, it wasn't. My dog is on medication now, medication that should have been started a year earlier. Thankfully, I realized it before my dog went into complete kidney failure from following Dr. Dodds' advice like the other review here from Joan T. read more

My dog had a reaction to Bravecto flea med, including vomiting and seizure, and the doctor prescribed vitamins and a customized diet to help cleanse her liver of this toxic drug. He is no longer with HemoPet because he was abruptly let go by Dr. Dodds, who does not actually spend much time in the clinic and is away for months at a time. Dr. Lassin did a great deal to build the clinic, and he was not allowed even a week to finish out his appointments. Given that our cat had been diagnosed with heart failure when he was let go, this was very difficult for us, and having to switch vets actually put our cat's life at risk (she has heart disease, kidney issues, asthma, a skin condition, etc. and Dr. Lassin understood her complex case while other doctors didn't). It was a very irresponsible way for Dr. Dodds to run the clinic, and she has completely lost our respect and betrayed our trust. In addition, Dr. Cody, who replaced Dr. Lassin, has proven to be very incompetent. He did not recognize symptoms of kidney failure and brushed off our concerns about her lack of appetite while on heart medication. Meanwhile, a *receptionist* at another vet's office knew that we should immediately come in, recognizing that the cat was actually in kidney failure. If we had followed Dr. Cody's advice, our pet would 100% be dead now. We have also noticed delays in calling in prescriptions and just general disorganization since Dr. Lassin left. We had finally found a great vet in Dr. Lassin, and will now have to look elsewhere for a high-quality, trustworthy, holistic doctor (Dr. Lassin has since left the southern California area, and I am very jealous of the pets and pet owners that will benefit from his care where he ends up!). read more

No, No, No.........we just purchased a new puppy and called to make an appointment with Dr. Lassin and found out he is no longer with HemoPet. I am honestly so sad because he is the most amazing veterinarian. I am worried we will not find another veterinarian like him. By his holistic approach, he helped our lab live an amazing life until 15 1/2 years old. Dr. Lassin understood our dogs medical history and treated it accordingly which is why I strongly believe that is why our dog lived such a healthy life. We owe a lot to Dr. Lassin for the care he provided for our dog. He would have lived longer, his health was great but, he blew his knee out and had to put him down. We first met Dr. Lassin at VCA and then followed him to HemoPet. I cannot express how knowledgeable, patient, understanding, and genuinely caring person Dr. Lassin is. I will agree with the recent reviews. I felt I struck gold when I met Dr. Lassin...I even cried the first time I was there because he was so kind and I felt I finally found a vet who truly could take care of my senior dog with a heart condition. My dog was doing pretty well under the circumstances with the combination of holistic medication Dr. Lassin was treating him with. He followed up with me and checked on us regularly. I found out he was gone the day I came in for an appointment. Brenda (whom I love) informed me that he was gone and there was no warning. I knew he would never leave that way without contacting his patients. Dr. Cody took over for him and I was truly disappointed. There's a difference between being overwhelmed and being incompetent...I feel he is both. He's a very nice man but he did not know what he was doing at all. The first time, he asked me what medication I thought he should give my dog...yikes. That same day, a female worker, yanked my dog by his collar to take him in the back until I told her to please pick him up, he was scared. Dr. Cody never gave me a date to come back and have my dog checked to see if his medication should be changed. I had to call and ask myself. No one got back to me so I went in one day to ask him and he informed me that yes, my dog should have been seen by the cardiologist earlier. I asked if he should see a specialist and he shrugged his shoulders and said it might be a good idea. I told him I really needed him to keep track of these things and communicate with me. My dog had a progressive heart condition. He did apologize for that interaction and that was kind but left me feeling nervous about my dogs care. Long story short, my dog wasn't cared for properly after Dr. Lassin left. He died a week ago and I truly feel he could have had more time here if his medication had been checked sooner and the new vets here had been more attentive. I know all animals have their time but he was my very best friend and love of my life. Dr. Lassin understood that and really treated him like his own pet. I don't know who is running this place but it's gone way downhill since Dr. Lassin left. Sad. read more

In 2010, my dog was diagnosed as being hypothyroid and though I had always leaned toward holistic medicine (for both myself and for my dog), I thought it best to go with Dr. Dodd (because after all, she is supposed to be the thyroid "expert") on the issue and have my dog take Soloxine. (which I now consider a poison). At first, it appeared that my dog was doing okay. Nothing too drastic, but then he started becoming hyperthyroid. So we lowered his dose. Next test, levels were close to normal. And then yet again, my boy went hyperthyroid. Lowered dose again. This went on and off for about 2 years. Then, in 2012, my dog ends up having THYROID CANCER and WHY. Because it is believed when a dog (and perhaps a human too) undergoes rapid changes in the thyroid gland (i.e., hypo to hyper), the cells go crazy and tumors grow. By the time my boy's cancer was discovered, it had metastasized to his lymph nodes and lungs. Three months later I had to say goodbye to my beloved best friend. I HATE Dr. Dodds and if my review can even save one animal from this person's quackery, it will serve a purpose. I hate myself for ever listening to this "so-called expert". You might wonder why I am writing this review almost 2 and a half years after the fact. Well, when I logged into my email this morning, whose name do I see on my list, yes, Dr. Jean Dodds/Hemopet. If I could give 10 stars, I would. I got my dog's thyroid tested and wanted to send the blood to Dr. Dodds at Hemopet. The vet I used was very unhelpful, and had no idea what I was talking about, so I ended up just using their lab. However, I emailed Dr. Dodds the results, and she was SO amazingly helpful. I was able to get a second opinion, and she answered all of my questions. Thanks to her, I now know how to care for my baby. I will recommend Dr. Dodds and Hemopet to everyone I know.
