The chicken sandwich and the Cole slaw and the hush puppies! Wow really nice way to spend a lunch!

I'm from Louisiana and know what good fried chicken is. Hen & Flour knock it out of the park! Their hush puppies are on par with Louisiana ones, but sure would be nice to have some with crawfish and a homemade remoulade on the menu. We ordered the MAC & cheese and coleslaw as sides. Hubby isn't picky, but he didn't care for his Mac & cheese. I found my coleslaw to be dry and flavorless. I ended up making my own coleslaw dressing to add to it. We also ordered the shrimp Po Boy sandwich special. It was just ok. It could certainly use some remoulade sauce, a butter toasted bun, and pickles. We ordered on Valentine's Day and hoped they had made extra beignets, but they had run out two hours prior to closing. We'll be back for the chicken and hush puppies, but will choose other sides next time. We think the value for what you get is good. read more

First time here. Chicken was good at first then noticed blood leaking out under the top piece. Greens were hot spicy not in a good way. Mac and cheese was tacky sticky. We visited Hen & Flour for a weekday dinner, finding the place empty the whole time except for a small number of takeout orders. This is a counter service establishment, so ordering is at the counter. The employees bring the food out and after the meal, the customer busses their own dishes. The fried chicken is cooked to order and it took about 15 minutes before we could dig in. Half Chicken w/ Two Sides ($28.50) Chicken - Oh man, the chicken comes out piping, steaming hot, like molten lava with the grease, fat, and juices dribbling out, almost burning my fingers. A fried peppery smells wafts over the table, exciting the olfactory glands. A half chicken is six pieces, with Hen & Flour cutting the breast into thirds, making eating and sharing far more manageable (and allowing more evenness in the cook, I'm sure). The chicken is only very lightly breaded, perhaps even just a single dredge in flour mixed with salt, pepper, and spices, creating a thin, delicate crust. The chicken is fried perfectly, no dryness to be found whatsoever, with even the breast dripping juices out with each bite. There's surprisingly no skin attached - that's something that I usually associate with helping to retain fat and moisture - but is something that definitely isn't needed here. It's so perfectly fried that the area around the bone is on the cusp of being undercooked. Such a good fried chicken, better than anything I've found in Seattle thus far. (5/5) Hush Puppies - We were about to order these as a side, but then the owner told us the meal came with two pieces. The hush puppies are round 1.5 inch-ish round spheres of fried corn meal. Each sphere is crisp on the outside while the inside is kind of dense and dry. I usually am happy to eat hushpuppies by themselves, but I feel like a dipping sauce is almost mandatory here. Hen & Flour doesn't seem to do much to differentiate the hushpuppies and they are kind of indistinguishable from food service ones. The weakest part of the meal. I usually expect sides to come in small 8oz or 12oz containers, but Hen & Flour actually serves them in large bowls. Surprisingly large. Side 1: Mac & Cheese - This isn't a particularly saucy mac and instead the cheese is more of a grainy texture indicative of unemulsified cheese. Still, it's quite savory and delicious, salted perhaps a little too heavily for my tastes, with quite a bit of pepper, but still overall pretty good. The mac isn't too mushy, so there's still some texture. (4/5) Side 2: Red Beans & Rice - This dish has a spectacular smoky and savory flavor, with a bit of spice from andoulle sausages to round things out. There's a bit of rice on the bottom that is absolutely soaked with the delicious holy trinity based sauce. There are plenty of pieces of sliced sausage and tons of red beans, cooked well but still with a bit of bite for texture. (5/5) Overall I was very impressed with the food served at Hen & Flour. Wow. Great friendly service in a very humble, clean and welcoming dining area. But I came for the food! Half chicken consisted of six piece all tender, juicy , flavorful and a crunchy crunch. Sides included was an excellent gooey Mac and cheese and their red beans and rice with andouille sausage. Perfect. I wasn't as impressed with the two hush puppies that were dry (could use a dip). Dry and Under-seasoned. I should premise this with the fact that I did NOT have any of the barbecue sauce on my chicken. I can't eat spicy food because I have issues with the lining of my stomach and there were no non-spicy sauce options other than ranch. However, the chicken by itself was pretty flavorless. The chicken was cooked well (not overdone) but I found it pretty difficult to swallow regardless. My husband got the chicken sandwich with barbecue sauce and Cole slaw. He said it wasn't dry but it was just OK. We're not terribly picky and heard good things about this place so it was disappointing as we don't get to eat out often. I got the beignets to go and found they were pretty dry as well. I ended up putting some honey on them and they went down easier but were still pretty flavorless. Visit was on 10/28/25 and got the 2 Piece Chicken: I was excited to try this place during my short visit to the area. I went out of my way to try it. I was sorely disappointed! I was fine with the wait and craving a southern style fried chicken. I didn't mind the wait as they make the dish as you order which I appreciate. My Chicken was RAW. Like red inside bleeding and chicken completely RAW. That's fine, it happens. Getting Service to let them know took awhile as the sole person there disappeared. When I told him, he was apologetic and took the Chicken back. He asked me to wait a bit and I didn't have to wait as long. Why? Because he just put the same chicken he had originally served me back in the fryer. Really? Yeah, REALLY!!!!!! So I told him that wasn't acceptable. Fried Chicken is delicious because of the crispy seasoned exterior and the luscious well cooked and marinated meat inside. And his excuse was that it would have to take longer for me to have my meal. I mean, YEAH! Of course but you'd be serving me Chicken that is thoroughly cooked not REFRIED! Don't you take pride in what you serve? Anyway, it was really JUST OKAY. It was bland. The Hush Puppies was also bland and could've really used better seasoning. He gave me a lanyard and I ended up taking my Chicken to go as I still had errands to accomplish before dark. But that's it. He didn't really do anything to make up for the service and the subpar Chicken. I don't know. Maybe I would've enjoyed the meal if it was done correctly or if the service existed. Wow, some of the best fried chicken I've had in a while! We found this place on our way to Medford while traveling. It has a very cute interior with decorations on the walls. When we arrived around 1pm on a Wednesday afternoon, the way were already sold out of an item or two. When we ordered, we were lucky to snag the last Mac & cheese! What we loved most about this place was the fried chicken! We ordered half a bird, knowing there'd be breast meat we were a tad worried it'd be dry. To our surprise, that was not the case! There was also so much flavor in every bite. Another highlight were the hush puppies. We didn't expect to get 2 extra hush puppies per entree order. I just kept eating them and eating them. Before I knew it, I ate at least 5 of them! They're a small business, so the service a bit slower. However, when it comes to good food, I don't mind waiting. Highly recommend this place. So on my last week in Medford I finally tried this southern food spot. Many people recommended me since I am from Louisiana which the owners of this restaurant are also from (I think). Anyways the chicken and collard greens were amazing. The chicken was crispy, moist and well seasoned. I also got a side of their hot honey sauce and baby that was the perfect touch, it was so good. And the greens! Now that was some southern greens. But I did deduct one star because the red beans were not good, too watery which is how some people like their beans but not me. Overall I was super happy with my food. The beans were an additional side and I didn't even eat it but I was full off the chicken and greens. Now I did DoorDash this so idk how the place is inside but my food got delivered very quick and was still nice and hot. I wish I would've gone sooner but whenever I'm back in Medford I will be there. read more

We ventured to Medford yesterday to try out the new restaurant Hen and Flour, located at 141 S Central Ave. We got there just after 12 noon on a Saturday. There are about six tables and also a couple of bars that you can sit at. We are greeted by David who owns the place. We ordered the half bird with the two sides. We really wanted greens but they were out so we settled on hush puppies, mac & cheese, and red beans and rice as our sides. We got a chance to talk to David at length and these are all family recipes, the red beans and rice recipe is from a "crazy cousin"! We can tell you, Cousin did good! The fried chicken was perfect. David said it was his grandmother recipe and again grandmother did good. The side of hush puppies is five hush puppies but when you order any of the fried chicken dishes, two hush puppies come with the chicken, so we had a total of 7. He also brought our beignets out hot covered with powdered sugar in my new top fresh from the dry cleaners was covered in white. They were perfectly puffed too! I recommend this place as someone who lived in New Orleans for a while this place does that region proud. I also love that it is a locally owned business with two other locally owned businesses on each side, one empanada place and one pizza by the slice place. After a week of cycling and camping in the Cascades, we were looking for a fresh-cooked hot meal. We found it at Hen and Flour. Piping hot, crispy, tender and juicy, but not oily. Delicious. We also found the proprietors welcoming and gracious hosts. They started Hen and Flower almost two years ago after perfecting their recipe. They make a great front/back of the house team. The best deal for two is the half chicken and two sides (get the Mac n Cheese). They have a limited wine and beer selection, but have the essentials -- red/white wine and an IPA and a lager. Bottom line: excellent food, gracious service and intimate, casual atmosphere. read more

We knocked on the door because they were supposed to be open. The owner said he was closed because one of his fryers was down. I told him we were passing through and did a stop at the restaurant because the reviews on Yelp were very high. He said that he had one fryer available and could cook for our party of three. However, it would take 20 minutes. The wait was worth it. The fried chicken was delicious as well as the coleslaw, red beans & rice, greens and mac & cheese. I had some time to kill and found my way to Hen & Flour. They had great lighting, a clean space, and kind and caring service. The food was damn good. It what's you're looking for when you want homemade and hot fried chicken. The mac and cheese was good, but it was slightly mushy. Nonetheless, I would still recommend to anyone visiting town. EDIT: As mentioned below, I said I'd give this place a second chance. Well, I'm glad I did because their fried chicken is superb! It comes out hot, fresh and crispy. The meat is very tender and juicy just how I like it. Served with two house made hush puppies and your choice of a side (I chose coleslaw) and you've got a great meal. It's hard to find great fried chicken around here so to have this place locally is a win. I wish them the best and will definitely be coming back. Sadly, this was a bummer. I drove 30 miles to go try this new place and arrived well within their published "open hours" of 11-5. I got their shortly after 2PM. Guess what, I was informed by the owner that they were sold out if everything. I was shocked. I mean really, when you open a new restaurant you better be prepared for a lot of new customers, anxious to try your food after months of anticipation. But no, he told me they don't want to have any leftover food going to waste and his goal is "to sell out every day, no matter what time it is". Ok I said, but you're losing out on 3 more hours of business? We chatted it up and he did understand he needed to do some product supply "calibration" to get enough for the whole day. I get that, but to be off by 1/2 of your inventory and lose 1/2 of your day was too much to swallow. As a small business owner myself, turning away customers 3 hours before closing time is a huge no-no. And IMHO, the customer is always right. A nice hidden spot in downtown Medford. The restaurant seemed relatively new and clean. The service was pretty quick and friendly. The fried chicken was crispy and well coated. In my opinion, they had the right amount of thickness of batter. It didn't feel overly heavy. The meat was extremely moist with good flavor. Both the red beans and Mac and cheese sides were a good compliment. The mac and cheese has a good subtle jalapeño kick that makes you want to come back for more. I've never been to New Orleans, so I can't compare it, but the food was great. Just the right amount of spie in the chicken and the mac and cheese was glorious. No ice for water or beverages, which is weird but whatever. Also , a warning if you have never had beignets before. Don't ware black and don't breathe or talk with one near your face.
