The sauce is amazing (spicy ginger) but sadly the chicken was rubbery and dry. Hainan chicken is supposed to be juicy (simmer in hot water and quickly transferred into cold/icy water). Way too much black pepper in the daikon soup. Tasted the chicken broth in rice but definitely no ginger. I am willing to go back but will order something else on the menu. This was my favorite meal during our Boston trip. This is comparing to many of the food spots in Boston (the city itself). My Malaysian girlfriend was reminded of the nostalgic, authentic childhood flavors. We got the regular chicken rice and the crispy "heat" chicken rice. It came with a nice hot broth. It took about 10 min for the order to be ready and we were hungry and excited to try everything. The dish came with 2 dipping sauces-one thick sweet chili sauce and one ginger sauce. I paired the sweet chili sauce with the fried chicken and the other one with the steamed chicken. Both chicken varieties were nicely flavored but the ginger rice was barely warm. For food that was fresh out of the kitchen and consumed immediately outside at a bench, it was disappointing and a big let down for me. After all, flavors are affected by temperature. The meal also came with some daikon broth which was very peppery. I'm a big pepper lover but found the amount used in the small bowl a little overbearing. Got this delivered through Peach. The crispy chicken was good (of course, not crispy, but the meat was still juicy and tender). The cilantro is always a plus. Ginger rice could use a little more seasoning, but was cooked perfectly. I've been following them on Instagram since they started the renovation process, and now that I've visited, I can say that I am very impressed! The menu has choices for the chicken to be boiled, crispy or a mix of both. All of their entrees come with sauces on the side and soup. I've seen this place all over my instagram and finally got to try it! Hen Chicken Rice sells Hainanese chicken and it definitely does not disappoint! The first thing I noticed when I took these out the bag was the packaging. Everything was environmentally friendly/decomposable! I tried the crispy and the heat. Both are fried thighs flavored differently, placed over a bed of rice topped with cucumbers and packed with a flavorful sauce. The Crispy is the classic piece of fried chicken that was perfectly paired with the sauce. The Heat has a little kick to it but you can taste the flavors on the outside, perfect on its own! The rice in both of these taste very brothy with a small small hint of fresh ginger. Most people wouldn't even notice the taste of the ginger! It tasted like home, I'm a huge fan! The turnip soup is just how I like, a small cup with fragrant and sweet turnip flavors! I also got to try the thai teas here. I like my thai teas a bit on the creamier/sweeter side, which this place was exactly it. I LOVE the thai teas here! I would 1000000% come here again and definitely recommend it. This place knows what they are. They're a pretty fast bento-box style deal. You get a box with chicken and rice and some soup. The soup was a bit spicy for my liking, but the chicken was excellent. The flavor was ideal, and the breading was a little crispy even though I let the box stay closed for several minutes. On top of that, the price was quite fair. Highly recommend. This place is OK. Its no Chic-Chick (RIP). Quick review is this place is just really OK and you're paying for the Union Square rent. Love the concept- menu is strictly chicken and rice and there are a couple of different variations: original, crispy, spicy-crispy, lean (brown rice), and combo crispy-original. All except the lean comes with ginger rice, daikon soup, and a sauce. I ordered the spicy-crispy chicken and my partner ordered the original. Portion sizes are not crazy big or small, just ok. The balance of chicken to rice was heavily favored for the rice- so it wasn't a surprise we got full. The ginger rice is very flavorful- but it was a little too wet for my tastes. The crispy chicken had pretty good flavor, but the spice level was weaker than I thought it would be and the chicken was no longer crispy. I would steer clear of the crispy chicken because I think that's a problem with the packaging (the rice ends up steaming the chicken!). The original was tasty, but some pieces were a little dry/ it didn't blow us away. 2 takeaway entrees will set you back about $26- not crazy but not good value either.
