I've been attending Poetry Lounge in Houston since 2014. It is currently located downtown at Henke & Pilot. It is such a gem for wordsmiths and dreamers. The ambiance is delightfully cozy, with dimmed lights casting soft glows on eager faces. The mic feels like a sacred vessel, capturing raw emotions, bold verses, and rhythmic flows. The staff manages the crowd with grace, serving drinks that perfectly complement the poetic vibe. From heartfelt sonnets to fiery spoken word, each performer breathes life into the night. An event space for sure, Henke & Pillot is serving up a lot of love Downtown. We came for an evening event so I can only speak to usage of the upstairs lounge, however, upstairs alone, is truly impressive how transformative the space can be. My old fashioned felt "club style" i.e. overly sweet, but this isn't a spot I'm visiting for the flavor of the drinks, it's a spot to see a show, and in that it does exactly what it's supposed to do! Know that you'll battle the typical downtown considerations: free parking can be difficult to find. Parallel street parking becomes free after a certain hour, but it's still difficult to find. read more

The post-Morrissey Halloween After Party was electric--no cover charge, and the host and owner went above and beyond to make us feel right at home. Set in one of Houston's oldest, most historic buildings, Henke & Pillot has charm for days, seamlessly blending old-school ambiance with a modern lounge feel. Drink specials were fantastic, and though the beer list is limited, every pour is served icy cold; just the way it should be. The spacious, cushy couches scattered throughout the bar are perfect for small gatherings or simply a quiet escape, and the moody vibe adds that extra touch. Visited for poetry Sunday and the venue overall was okay. Downstairs was hot and stuffy but upstairs a/c was working great. Two major complaints: 1. there is not enough bar/food/waitstaff. There was one person taking and serving food and drink orders for roughly 300 people and one bar tender. 2. Our food order took an HOUR and then the fried fish tasted rotten and fishy. We couldn't even swallow it. My advice is to eat before you go and bring a handheld fan in the summer. read more

I went here for poetry Night on a sunday and had a good time. The drinks are really reasonable and the crowd was nice . My only complaint would be the hookah. I was there for about 4 hours and I never got a refill on my coals. I advise the guy doing the hookah multiple times but I can tell he was overwhelmed as he was the only person doing hookah. I was there to see the revival of Etro since apparently they have the same DJs there for their 80's night on Saturdays. It's a cute bar/club within a larger building. There is also a little sidewalk section too you can go get some fresh air. It's about what you expect from the other downtown bars - friendly door people with no cover, pricey drinks, and it's not a big commitment. If you've ever been to Etro then you know the music - I mean it's not numbers but it's nice to have clean bathrooms. read more

I visited Henke & Pillot for Poetry Sundays. The talented poets were amazing, and the food was very delicious. I ordered the 2 fish and 6 shrimp that came with hush puppies, and fries. It was full of flavor and good serving size. I ended up taking half my food home. Parking: There was free parking along the street but downtown Houston is normally always busy, so you'd have to hunt for a spot. They did offer Valet in front of the building for $40 or valet across the street about a 1-2 min walk for $20. Cash or card for payment options. I really enjoyed myself and do plan to return! I down scored one star because the tables and chairs were not clean. The bar stools appeared to be extremely old, cracked and wobbly. Our table was dirty and had an eyelash cluster, hair that was stuck, possibly dried ketchup ,and some change (coins) someone left behind. Considering they're open only on Sundays, I think they could do a better job with cleanliness. read more

BIRTHDAY SHENANIGANS AND POETIC JUSTICE!!! Wow! I had an amazingly wonderful and poetic time at the poetry lounge, hosted by well-known poet Se7en, as I recently celebrated my 48th birthday with my husband and our four adult children! First, the ambiance and atmosphere is a very chill and relaxing environment. Upon arrival, each guest was issued a card for one complimentary drink to redeem at the bar. The staff members were well organized, fast, and friendly while directing and welcoming the guests. The doors opened an hour before the show started, and all guests were allowed to hangout on the first floor at the bar or either in the lounging area. There's plenty of space for everyone to move around freely without bumping into one another, and there's also plenty of available sofas, and high-top tables sporadically furnished in various areas of the room. Secondly, as for the drinks, my daughter and I, traded in our complimentary drink cards for a Lemon Drop Martini with olives. My husband and our sons traded theirs for a Kentucky Mule. We all equally enjoyed our drinks very much and ended up ordering and paying for a second round. The bartender was nice and friendly but a bit on the quiet side. There was a tip jar sitting on the bar and we tipped her for her services. By the way, guests were encouraged to order food on the first floor while waiting for the show to start. Furthermore, when it was time for the poetry show to begin, everyone was directed to start moving upstairs to enjoy the show. My family and I quickly found seats near the stage so that we could have a great view of the host and the poets. There's a bar on the second floor as well, where guests can continue ordering drinks and food while enjoying the show. However, the service was extremely slow when ordering food, which made us regret not putting our order in while we were downstairs waiting for the show to start. My husband ordered an 18 piece of fried wings and a side of French fries. The food was served piping hot and was absolutely delicious and flavorful which compensated for the long wait. It was well-worth the wait. My family and I enjoyed the food immensely! Moreover, the show was very entertaining and exciting as each poet and performer showcased their writing skills by sharing their self-written poems or songs with the audience. Not only were they awesomely skilled in writing, but also funny, which kept the audience entertained and engaged. It was almost like being at a comedy show, lol. Some poets were more seasoned than others which was evident in each one of their pieces that were performed. Nevertheless, they were all great, and not to mention, very brave. It's a scary thing to get up and perform in front of a room full of strangers, so kudos to all of the poets and singers that took to the stage. They are truly a team of skilled writers. I cannot recall the stage name of my fav artist of the early show, but I posted videos of him of him performing two of his pieces, entitled, "Sovereign" and "God Body." Overall, I enjoyed the show and the entire set-up of this establishment! I will be returning in the near future. Hats off to the host/poet, Se7en who was also very entertaining and hilarious. I highly recommend this establishment for anyone who is a writer or for anyone who just enjoys great poetry! All shows are hosted on Sundays only. There's an early show from 2pm to 4pm, and a late show from 7pm to 10pm. Early Bird tickets can be pre-purchased on their website, poetryloungelive.com for $10, or at the door for $20. However, if you wait too long to purchase the early bird tickets online for $10, the price will then bump up to $13. Tax and fees are included which can quickly add up, so I encourage anyone that's interested in giving them a try, to purchase your tickets online as early as possible. We purchased our tickets online a week in advance and were charged the Early Bird special of $10 which is not bad at all. Because of great service, friendly staff, a relaxing environment, great entertainment, and delicious food, I gave this establishment five stars. read more

Never ever will I spend my money in the establishment. We arrived with a reservation for a 40th birthday for a friend d from out of town. Once I heard she wanted it here I was Leary because I had a horrible experience here prior to Covid. We were seated and there was a couple kissing all over one another in/on our reserved section. Wow!!! They made them over to the next section were continued the to kids and touch ALL over one another in a "reserved section". I then never received service for now over 40 mins. All I can say is as a Yelp Elite member this is my second time having bad service here so I yelped this time. I'm more disappointed that my friend had a birthday so we are planning to leave. Cons: poor management and customer service with staff smoking hookahs with no service and not busy. One hour and a half later still no bottle service. read more

Came for Poetry Sunday! What a wonderful event I must say. I can't say enough kind things about the event. I do have a few things that could be better about the establishment though. The downstairs bathrooms are so nasty and smelly. It was too stuffy, I had to hold my nose while in there. Also when walking up the stairs, the place has a smell too it, it reminds me of toilet water or trash. Honestly, these bars can do a better job with maintaining their establishments. read more

Food was okay. We went to the comedy show upstairs and upwelling the "VIP" for $146 was crazy. For context, VIP are a bunch on mismatch, battered couches in horrible condition and cigarette holes in them with a tables that are terribly chipped, shaky and resemble something that bed bugs would reside on. Oh and it comes with a champagne bottle for 6 that is actually a $12 bottle from Trader Joe's. You also get to park yourself for $10 or $20 valet. read more

The atmosphere of this place was pretty good. Definitely a place to go turn up although it was as packed as I would have thought for a Friday night. The door was charging $20 at the door for ladies (which is a little high to me personally). We ended up getting in for free (not just because we're cute..) but because they have a promo is you follow them on IG/like their page or something. Wow, I don't normally give places 1 star, but honestly Henke & Pillot deserve negative stars. I have been here on two separate occasions and have come to the conclusion that I will never come back and neither should you. The first occasion was for a friend's birthday party, trying to get in we waited over 20 minutes as we wanted to celebrate with our friend who was already inside but sadly we couldn't get in. Instead, we had to watch other people skip the line as we patiently waited...but during this time, we learned how corrupt and disgusting and racist Henke & Pillot was and left. Tonight, birthday girl wanted to celebrate at Henke & Pillot and you do what bday girl wants, so our party of 10 (6 girls and 4 guys) headed on over. The lounge didn't look overly busy so I thought our chance of getting in was pretty high however it was deja vu! Waiting patiently at the velvet rope we saw many people skip ahead of us/the whole line. What was even more frustrating was Mr. Bouncer said there wasn't enough space for our party but we literally saw a group of at least 10 people leave...After about 20 minutes of waiting, birthday girl decided to have a few words with Mr. Bouncer who finally said if we purchased a table he would let our party in. At this time we decided Henke & Pillot didn't deserve our money and left. Oh but for those still trying to enter, here is a tip...you LITERALLY have to give the bouncer a $20 TIP and he will let you in. Mr. Bouncer you are so corrupt, not only will he let you in, but he doesn't even check your ID! If I could give a zero I would! I have been a patron of this establishment for almost a year. Mostly Fridays as I love the grown vibe and music. Tonight however I was embarrassed and more than anything humiliated by one of the waitresses. I sensed it was going to be a problem when one of the waitresses tried to have a friend in our party removed, stating she had a restraining order. However, after not being able to validate her claim we were able to get him back in. The entire night, I witnessed my friend be verbally harassed by this individual as he took it in stride. Mind you, this young lady is a waitress here. At the end of the night as we leave she has her boyfriend attack our guest. As I try to intervene the waitress begins to call me out of my name and verbally assault me in front of the crowd. This women knows nothing about me or my relationship with this individual, which is just a great friend. Eventually an officer arrests the boyfriend and the waitress is escorted away. To say I am disgusted and embarrassed by this night is an understatement. Management was made aware of the situation early on and failed to keep their employee in order. After it was found that she lied about an restraining order she should have been asked to leave the premises. read more

I stumbled at this place on the way back home from spending all evening watching Christmas lights and discovery green on 25 th December 2025...as expected there were not too many people over there coz it was Sunday after 10 pm on Christmas night...I see few people dancing...there was this salsa bachata teacher and few students...he had just finished the class as I got inside...so I went to the bar and ordered me a drink and was chatting with people, I ask this girl for dance( Eli) she was an anpiring dancer .I find this place pretty weird coz this intructor came to us and started asking for money coz we are in his dance social.....I was like no...it's dead I would rather leave..we came here to have a drink and may be dance...not for your class...but he keep insisting about it's the rule...and I was like dude whatever..have this and leve me alone...i had a long day...but the point is why this beautiful establishment would allow to nickle and dime there customers and the drinks were not cheap...but very competitive ...I was disappointed a little bit ...I wish the management will fix this...thank you read more

They had a DJ blasting rap music, lights, and dim lights. Definitely a club vibe. A lot of people were smoking hookah. We only stayed for one drink but the bartender was solid. Not sure if Thursday, Friday, and Saturday are similar but I'd guess so. read more

You lost me at $10 cover for ladies and $15 for men. I specifically AVOID covers but went along because I was with a group of friends. Interior is nice. Well designed, with an impressive amount of hightops and seats (for club standards). My friends and I were able to find seating as soon as we walked in. As with most clubs, dress code is practically nonexistent for women and super strict for men. On the women's end: tee's and jeans; men: three piece suits. That's the disparity I ~don't like. If you're going to be lax, be lax. If you're going to be strict, BE strict. Its one redeeming quality was fast bar service. The bartenders are efficient, and I never ran into a line when ordering another drink. read more

I went here for a poetry event hosted by "The Poetry Lounge". I'm new to it but it did not disappoint. The event was amazing!!! And they offered a free drink with the purchase of your admission ticket and it's every Sunday at this location. We enter and of course we waited until we got there to eat since food was available. But much to our disappointment, the food was terribly over priced. $17 for 6 wings and fries were an additional cost. Needless to say, I didn't complete my order and I was no longer wondering why with so many people inside why so few people were ordering. It did look really good, though. But there is no way I would ever bring myself to pay $17 for 6 wings alone. It was already a stretch when I thought I thought it included fries. But, anyways, the event was amazing. Just eat first. Drinks were good, service was good. I wonder if the owners of the facility realized that they would have had more orders if they simply even included the fries. read more

Yep. It was a packed Saturday night. They could have cranked up the air. I was sweating like crazy and I wasn't even dancing or moving. Horrible service; or rather no service. I couldn't even get to the bar for a drink. The promoters did a great job marketing the place in Market Square. There were really pretty people to look at, but this place reminds me of when Belvedere at Uptown Park was first opened. Even the layout was very similar: one big long bar, an outside patio and Vegas-style up lights. My friend had a great time, but I wouldn't come here if I were having a get together with my friends. Many other places to go to, and there's an Asian door guy that told me I had to wait 20 minutes even though my friend had a RESERVED Table Reservation. I was turned off by the "mobs of people" outside waiting to get into this bar. Was JJ Watt inside or something? I can hang out VIP at the Marmont or Mr. Chow in Beverly Hills but I can't get into Henke & Pillot Houston? I was honestly bored to tears, and when I finally was able to get a drink at the bar after being pushed around in the crowd of people, it was $12 for a vodka & tonic. What? Are you serious? No, thanks. Thirty minutes into the place, and I was ready to go home. Predicament: If you want to go to a crowded, "trendy," gastropub full of 20-somethings with overpriced drinks and poor service, snotty bartenders and bad service, this is your place. Stopped by this swanky joint while barhopping in the area. It opened up a couple months ago so it's still fairly new and an awesome addition to the growing downtown scene. Walking in, you're introduced to a huge open space with the bar lined with seating stools and a couple cozy couches against some walls. It has a modern yet vintage feel with all the wood/brass and chandeliers hanging from the ceilings. One of the bartenders made us some custom drinks and he seemed very versed in his cocktail concoctions, they were hella tasty! So if you're unsure about what you want to order, grab a bartender and let them know what you usually like to drink, they'll take their time making you a custom drink to enjoy. When it's completed, it'll be 3-stories with a rooftop bar on the 3rd floor. I'll definitely be back to check out the finished product! read more

I came here on a Friday night around 11:45pm and it was good amount of people. It's more laidback than midtown and because the crowd were not sloppy at all. I love love love the interior decorations. Beautiful chandlers, comfy sectional for reserved tables, and restroom was clean (hard to find these days). There is a small hallway with few tables for two...good for date night. That hallway will lead you to the outside patio. The music was on point! I can't wait to come back here for more! read more

Henke & Pillot is a new addition in Downtown Houston, established about 1.5 months ago I believe. My friends and I decided to check this place out after dinner, arriving around 10 PM. We were the second group there, so I saw different patrons gradually entering the new spot. Attire: Ladies and Gentlemen, dress up. Think of your favorite upscale restaurant and go out in that attire. No Affliction. No 'I can see your @$$ cheeks'. Something classy yet sexy. Ya feel?!? Parking: They offer valet for $10. There is a $5 garage located on the other corner. Otherwise, good luck street parking. Place: As soon as you enter, you see a full bar on the left with a decent amount of stools. There are about 6 couches spread out on the first floor. Restrooms are located right next to the DJ booth. Dark, modern designs with chandeliers hanging down. Upscale lounge. Music: To be honest, music wasn't the greatest. Some songs could have been passed up, but it was fun listening to some throwbacks. It was a mix of everything. Crowd: Age ranges from 25-45. Something like that sounds about right. You see some getting their groove on, and others staring at those people getting their groove on. Don't be afraid to mingle and meet people, especially the crowded area right in front of the bar! Drinks: I didn't try their signature cocktails so don't have anything about that. Gin & Tonic and wine are decent. If I remember correctly, one of my friends ordered 2 drinks with a total cost of $32. My friend asked the manager about Henke & Pillot's future plans. Supposedly, it will be a 3-story bar with the third floor as a rooftop bar. (I will be coming back.. Hopefully the rooftop view is gorgeous.) Henke & Pillot, love the fact that it is more on the fancy side compared to other establishments in the area. By the way, they have HH from Tuesday's to Friday's 4-7. Ladies, put on your hottest, tightest dress and tallest stilettos and come on out to impress yourself and maybe a few other souls. Guys, you keep looking hot in your fitted suits and tight dress shirts. Dang. It's getting hot already. If you have a party and have bottle service, you are all set. Henke is my go to spot for happy hour downtown. Phenomenal deals from 4 to 7pm. I particularly enjoy the Truffle Mushroom flatbread and the Old Fashioned (exquisitely prepared by Afton, your usual happy hour barkeep). It's not overly busy during happy hour, and you'll get to enjoy the ambiance and the eclectic music selection - the place is obviously still finding its soul regarding music, so it's always an auditory adventure to sit here for any length of time - if you're a scotch head you'll appreciate their selection (I always love a place that has Talisker, one of the most underrated scotches ever, if you often go for Mcallen or Glenlivet, do give it a fair try, I suspect you'll love it) Fridays and Saturdays are a different story. Did I enjoy myself? Yes, but I got here early and unlike some of the previous reviewers I have reasonable expectations of how busy the newest addition to the downtown bar scene will be. Will there be a line? Eventually. Will you love it once you get in? Depends how aggravated you are from waiting. This isn't a sports bar so please put your cosmopolitan pants on and deal with it.
