I had a fantastic meal at Henrietta Red and will be recommending a dinner here to anyone who mentions an upcoming trip to Nashville, it was that good. Their focus is seafood, with an expansive oyster bar, but the hands-down favorite dish of the night was actually a vegetable dish. Go figure. Just goes to show that they really know what they're doing in the kitchen. The amazing food made the meal one of the major highlights of my vacation with my mother. We started with the Red Snapper Crudo and Razor Clam Escabeche from the raw bar, and both were super-fresh. I especially liked the quinoa and citrus used in the former. At the server's suggestion, we also had the Green Curry oysters, which were unique but understated. Eventually we added on the more traditional Wood Fired oyster dish with dill and mustard, which I preferred. On the dinner menu, we shared the Roasted Acorn Squash, Squid, and Scallops. That acorn squash dish was amazing, with creamy feta, crunch from the almonds, and a great harmony of flavors with the lemon, chili, and a hint of mint. It sounds like it would all cover up the squash, but it didn't. This was THE dish of the night. As for the scallops and squid, my mom was especially impressed by the great sear on the scallops but we both were underwhelmed by the squid, which is usually my go-to dish. We shared the Pumpernickel Panna Cotta for dessert, and it was a more generous portion than anticipated. The cherries were my favorite part, and there could have been a few more. As much praise as I would like to laud on this place, I have to make a few comments about the service. We had reservations, were seated quickly, and enjoyed the decor and ambiance. But our server only paid attention to us after literally all of her other tables had left. We went half an hour without seeing her or getting drink refills, and she finally came over when I was craning my neck to follow her around the dining room- coming up with a short, terse, "Yes?" when I wanted to add on to our order. I don't know if she was just overwhelmed by the workload or simply didn't think our tip would be worthwhile given our two-person party and lack of alcohol. This would have easily been a five-star review (and I don't give those out often because that indicates the best of the best) but for the service- the food very clearly deserved it, though. We came here for a date night and special occasion. It was an easy choice after seeing photos of the food and the menu. We made reservations to minimize the wait and were seated promptly upon arrival. On a weeknight around 7:30 every table was filled. The place was bustling. Shortly after being seated, our waitress arrived with two glasses of Prosecco, since she caught wind of our special occasion. Nice touch. The plates are designed for sharing, which was great because we wanted to tour much of the menu. We started with the roasted mushrooms and chicories, which were a savory delight, and the smoked mackerel toast. The mackerel toast was a light on mackerel flavor with the strong yogurt flavor, though it was still good. Next was the the red snapper crudo. The flavor was similar to ceviche, but with thick, smooth chunks of red snapper. I could eat this all day. The seared scallops that followed were a delight and the trout was perfectly executed and full of texture and flavor. The creativity of the flavors and textures of everything really made the meal delicious. The space is great for tables of 2 or 12. However, when the menu has so many other creative items, this is probably worth skipping. I also loved the subtle sweetness imparted by the caramelized onions pureed into the sauce. Seared Sea Scallops: 5/5 Scallops are my favorite type of seafood, and this dish did them justice! They were seared perfectly to be slightly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The butternut squash ribbons accompanying the scallops were flavorful, adding more complexity to the dish. Linguini with Clams: 5/5 My favorite thing about this dish was the nduja (spicy pork sausage) crumbled over the top of the pasta. As a lover of spiciness, I appreciated how it gave the pasta a fiery flavor. The pasta and clams were also cooked well, with the pasta being al dente and the clams being tender. Pomegranate Pavlova: 4/5 This dessert was plated beautifully, and it was fun to break into the meringue capsule. I loved how light and subtly sweet the meringue was, but I thought that the stewed pomegranate was maybe too overpoweringly tart for such a delicate dessert. Service: 2/5 Service was the disappointment of the night. Our server was knowledge about the menu and checked in with us regularly. However, the dishes, which should have been spaced out if they're meant to be shared, came out quickly in groups of two or three. This meant that we didn't have enough time to fully enjoy a dish before being forced to move onto the next one because it had arrived at our table. We were there for a business function so were seated in the private dining room with a few servers to take care of us. The evening was stunning. The service ambiance and food cane together for what one of the guests called a magical evening. And it was. The opening salvo of ceviche style snapper with a crunch was a hit. What followed was an onslaught of culinary delights that enlightened the palate and the soul. Ok. Poetic but true. The squash was prepared with a dressing out of chili with tomato and a cream-based dressing. Literally much of the crowd took bread and as we may do in Greece and Cyprus and Europe in general cleaned the plate. It was just that good. The mussels that I ordered for $24 and the curry oysters ($12) were both delicious, but I'm not sure if the price makes sense for the value, especially in a town like Nashville where there's so many other incredible options at a lower price point. The dessert I got for the night was the funky monkey sundae. It was a massive portion for one person, fairly priced at $9, but was way too salty with the malted peanuts. This was a really interesting restaurant experience. That's because the dishes I was expecting to be great were only good, while the dishes I just threw in to check the box were really strong. First, a commentary on Nashville--it seems like one of the rules of waitstaff in this town is that you've got to be good-looking and possess a solid array of incredible ink to get jobs here. That's not a criticism or a noted positive, but over the course of four days and six restaurants, let's just say I noticed a trend here. Second, Henrietta Red's space: beautiful. I really loved the long tables upfront...if I lived in town and could arrange for a group to show up, that's where I would want to sit, but the bar area is also pretty cool. The staff moved a little too fast for my tastes, so I don't recommend this as a date night destination...unless you are looking to get through that date in less than an hour. We struggled to stay here for two hours, because the kitchen/waitstaff moved so quickly. Third, the food. The monkfish and the cassoulet were a bit of a disappointment for our group, particularly the monkfish; we just assumed that dish would be great, and then it was so average that the four of us didn't bother to finish it. But, the bread, beet salad, roasted vegetables and the lamb? All of those plates were fantastic. Then we had the creme brulee for dessert...and that was also only OK (and I'm a big dessert guy...I was really hoping for a big finish, and then, BAM, it wasn't). I liked my Dr. Amp cocktail, and the Night Manager went over well with another guy at my table as well. Drinks in general seemed to fit. And Olivia, our server, put up with one of my friends being the funny guy who made a joke about everything whenever she came by. (Thanks for your patience.) Chef Julia, your food is inspirational. There is nothing about it that I would improve. As nice as the wait staff were, there were inconsistencies that show the front of house is not living up to your level of skill in the back of house. I reread the concept of the restaurant from the website before deciding how to review this. The website clearly states that wine is also a featured part of the meal. I was disappointed not with the selection, although I wouldn't know much about it because this is not valued by front of house. What I know about wine is whether you choose to sell it for $5 happy hour price or $500 per bottle, someone in the restaurant should value it, should know it, and maybe even use it as a way to accentuate the already elevated food here. It's ok if the waitstaff can't memorize the grapes in the happy hour rose, but if I inquire in the span of a 60 minute meal to three different servers including walking to to the bar where I was more or less snubbed by the middle age male bartender...about what grapes make up the glass of rose I ordered....it subtracts from the overall experience. I'm from industry I know there are off nights, this didn't feel like a one-off, it felt like a discrepancy between the value placed on the food I am experiencing versus the remaining (very important) component of wine. At a place that required a credit card to make a reservation I should be able to expect this- otherwise it starts to appear as false pretense. The other albeit very sad alternative is to remove the wine from the menu until it can be incorporated as expertly as the food. Perhaps it is just a training gap in serving these days, especially with staffing issues related to pandemic and economy. Seemed a little bit loopy? Here, it's appropriate. "Hipster" is not the wrong word, but it's also a little bit simple. The atmosphere is light and welcoming, somewhere between simple enough to make you feel welcome but stylish enough to let you know you've stepped right in to something special. The menus are seasonal, and it's apparent that genuine thought and care goes into each dish. We had the opportunity to sit at the counter as we ate, watching the staff shuck and plate oysters. It's a bit odd to be sat directly on top of the cooks. You have to wonder if it makes them nervous. But it's absolutely fascinating to watch them work. Everything was amazing. I feel like I'm saying this too much. Our party shared dishes, and nothing displeased a single person. And then dessert happened, and I nearly cried. I will dream about this restaurant. In fact, one of the dishes made my all time favorite lists for this dish. Honestly, the vibe is set the moment you walk in the door. It's not too loud, it's comforting, it makes you wonder what is next. Our sever, Hannah was incredible. She listened, she recommended, she kept us up to date as the menu changed with sellouts. We ordered everything on the menu, and we're not disappointed with any of it. It's tapas, my favorite way to share and try food. Hannah's choice on oysters allowed us to try them from every coast, each uniquely briney in their own special way. This place has been on my list to check out for a while now. We were able to get seated at the bar with no reservation on Friday. Service was prompt and friendly. Cocktails weren't exceptional considering they were $14 each but the Dr. Amp and Foreign Correspondent were still pretty good. The serving style is tapas-like so we ordered the crab dip to start and the shrimp linguine and lamb sausage to split. The sausage was delicious and had some very unique touches like the orange yogurt that went perfectly with the dish. Loved all the flavors in it and was super excited to try the linguine afterward. It wasn't anything to write home about and was filled with sourdough breadcrumbs that seemed excessive and didn't add much to the dish. It was still decent but I would have been disappointed if that's all I had, especially after tasting how good that lamb was. Y'all. The red snapper crudo. I legitimately cannot implore you enough to get this. It is 100% the best crudo or ceviche-type dish I've ever had. Every single element to this dish was well thought out. The texture, the presentation, the depth and development of flavor. Omg. I could have just had four plates of this and I would've been happy. We also got the ramps with a blue cheese mousse. When you think of blue cheese, it's almost always associated with being heavy. But this mousse, it was so light and airy and inexplicably delicious. We had several other dishes but those were the standouts to us. The hostess, Lexi/Lex was amazing and so sweet. She made sure we had the best meal. There was perhaps a miscommunication on the last plate, but it didn't matter. This was our third visit together as a couple over the last year and a half. I REALLY want to give Henrietta Red 5 stars because honestly, their seafood is by far the best I've had in Nashville (and honestly, their scallops are arguably the best I've had in my life). I'm going with 4.5 purely because the portion sizes were tiny despite being fairly expensive. I think if you know the portion sizes are small going into it and you don't go particularly hungry, be ready for it to ROCK your world. This was a culinary experience that was a bit out of my family's comfort zone, a lot of fancy things on the menu we hadn't tried. We tried a few different types of oysters, and while I'm not enough of an oyster connoisseur to tell much of a difference between them, they were all delicious. We also tried a pea shoot salad (didn't even know pea shoots were a thing?) and it was AMAZING. That's a big deal coming from me because I am NOT a salad fan at all. And, as I said, the scallops were probably the best I've ever had, but they didn't even come with a side and there were about 6 of them, which definitely left us wanting for more. Worst restaurant experience I can recall. Genuinely if I could give them 0 stars I would. Food: Portions were minuscule for the price point. I understand tapas style dining but the shrimp for $17 were shriveled and smaller than the size of my thumb. 80% of the dish was shrimp heads. Pass. Raw oysters were tiny and weren't cleaned properly and wood fired were extremely salty. Strange flavor combinations in the scallops. Plating was beautiful and what little bites we did have were fresh but it doesn't make up for everything else. Covid note: no cooks wore masks while only 30% of the population of Nashville is fully vaccinated. Service: Waitress was very curt. We waited over an hour for one dish and when we asked about it we were told "the food comes when it's ready" with no apology. We decided to just leave after it became obvious that the kitchen was in no rush to make our food and that service was of no importance to them. When we (very unhappily) asked for the bill and told them we would no longer be waiting we were told by the manager that "it was a bad night" for them yet were offered no compensation - just an empty apology and an ask for sympathy. I see a lot of praises for this establishment but coming from someone that has eaten from food trucks and dive bars throughout the US to various Michelin restaurants abroad, I hope you don't waste your time or money coming here. As someone who goes to many restaurants, I would expect the server to ask if it was our first time and provide some recommendations. We weren't told it was shared plates so we ordered a few of everything without knowing that the plates were small and would not be enough for 6 to share. It would be helpful for us to know or recommend we order two of something so we can all share. Every time the food came out, the runner would almost throw the food onto the table and run away. Every single time we asked for serving utensils and every single time they would throw the food on the table and runway while we tried asking for serving utensils. You'd think they'd learn after 4-5 dishes. When the server asked if we wanted new plates, they just threw a stack of 6 plates on the table and didn't clear our existing plates. Food- oysters were good, spaghetti and clams was salty, gnocchi was over cooked, peach toast was bland. Excited for a new restaurant in the Germantown area. Enjoyed a delicious dinner with friends with a reservation made on Open Table. Upon arrival we were quickly seated. Our server greeted us promptly and the menu was explained to us. There were a few happy hour selections including some beer on draft and sherry. The beer was a heavy Stout, probably the heaviest beer I have had the pleasure to drink. There were two types of oysters as well on the happy hour and of course we had to try those. Our waiter patiently explained the menu and how it was best to do order a variety of dishes to share- which we did. He also said to just order everything all at once and he would bring it in the correct order. So... We had two different types of bread brought to us first~~a bread with a cottage cheese spread, and another bread with an anchovy butter. Both were unique and tasty. Next came the oysters with three different sauces. We actually even liked the lemon sauce to put on the bread. We enjoyed a cauliflower pie, a blood orange salad, a red leaf lettuce salad, trout, and bass. The presentations are enticing and flavors delicious. The goo goo cluster dessert was small but perfect. I think next time I would order the banana dessert instead of the flourless chocolate cake. But that is just a personal preference. Love the layout of the restaurant. The overhead lighting is lovely. We ordered both options of the Wood Roasted Oysters in Bagna Cauda and Green Curry, Poppy's Caviar, and Seared Sea Scallops. I believe we ordered a half dozen of Murder Point and Aunt Dotty's? Henrietta Red offers a southern take on modern American food, with an emphasis on seafood. We loved everything we ordered: the red snapper crudo, crab salad (loved the avocado!), seared scallops and peach cobbler. All of the food we had at Henrietta Red was so fresh and delightful that I can't even pick a favorite. I was worried that the *vegan* peach cobbler wouldn't be as good without the butter, but it was great--my friend was jealous of my dessert order. Our server was excellent--she did a great job of balancing being friendly and making great recommendations but also leaving us alone to enjoy our meal. read more
