I've heard all about this place from various sources and decided to pop in on the way back from the shore for the weekend lunch buffet. The buffet was very well priced and worth every penny. The food was good, but not as great as I had been told. Perhaps this is just a result of having the buffet. While everything was good, nothing was great. This place is awful. First thing out of the person who greeted us was basically telling us if we wanted the buffet it's whatever's left. Great first impression! The place looks like a terrible sports bar, with very tacky sports memorabilia all over the wall. It's outdated and looks like a 1980s sporting goods store threw up on the walls. This is the place to eat around the hammonton area. We usually come here for the buffet. Prices went up a couple dollars over couple years but still worth it. What I like most is every kind of meat has its own flavor, and cooked to perfection. They bring out small portions and refill frequently. The staff also pick up your empty dishes often and always very friendly. Everything is good here. Don't forget to try their crab bisque, though last time was a bit salty. Usually really good with chunks of real crab meat. Chili is pretty good too. The restaurant sits on a quiet strip. Dining area is humble and plastered with local sports pictures and magazines. Some friends and I decided on a road trip food adventure. We put on our stretchy pants and headed down in anticipation for a feast. We were not disappointed! Over a great Motown soundtrack we stuffed our faces with a little bit of everything. My favorites were the incredible fresh and moist fried chicken, mac and cheese and surprisingly good crab bisque. A good natured fight almost broke out with people waiting for that fried chicken. Our waitress, Rayney was great and made us laugh plus we were welcomed by Ruth, Henri's wife. This is another one of those excellent execution of concept places. It is BBQ with very few other things to confuse you! The ribs were perfectly done falling off the bone melt in your mouth super. The brisket was superb. The sauce is the thicker sweet, moderately hot variety. No heat variations are offered. The collard greens were very tasty, the coleslaw great, and the cornbread a bit different but very good. My companions had the beans as well and while they looked great, I was too full to try them. All of the serving were huge. Most normal eaters could very easily get by splitting a platter. This is not a fancy place, The meals come out in a Styrofoam container (just right to close and take home your super sized left overs!) and plastic forks and knives are provided. The drinks list is limited (no unsweetened tea for me). There is a liquor store across the street if you would like to BYOB. The waitress we has was a chatty, sweet young lady who you will either fall in love with or who will drive you crazy. We stopped early on Friday Night with a party of four.There were two other tables occupied and we decided to sit in the back. It seem like the owner was by himself and I thought that this was going to be a long night. After about 15 minutes, the owner finally realized we were sitting in the back. We ordered the 2 BBQ Rib Platters, BBQ Chicken Platter and Fried Shrimp and Hush Puppy Platter. Each platter came with cornbread and 2 sides so we selected Bake Beans, Collard Greens, Baked Macaroni and French Fries. The food arrived 10 minutes later and in to go containers. The ribs looked picture perfect and had a super strong smoked flavor and the chicken was done to perfection. The sides were huge and each were good in their own right. The cornbread complemented the palate and was a great sponge to soak up the sauce. If you are a fan of BBQ, I would check this out on your way to the shore. If you take the BHP beware that the location is 500ft beyond the Rt 54 underpass. It's very easy to pass because most are motoring down the pike. Henri's was a no-frills bbq joint - you walk in and take a seat at one of the open tables. Be prepared for a little wait, as the sign above the counter so pointedly states "This is not fast food. If you want fast food go to McDonalds". I ordered the brisket platter with collards and mac and cheese. The brisket was good and flavorful, the mac and cheese was okay (I found that it didn't have the strong cheddar flavor I typically like in my mac and cheese) the collards were good as well but could use a little more heat. The corn bread was delicious! My friend ordered the ribs platter, the ribs were tender, and fell apart but some parts of the meat seemed to be overcooked and had a dry stringy appearance. All in all it was decent bbq and a good casual spot to stop when you're on your way back from the beach. read more

The only reason this isn't a five star review is because their collard greens are sweet. As is their barbecue sauce, but that's okay. Good, even. All their bone in meat is so tender you can use the flimsiest plastic fork to get it off the bone. Their potato salad is fantastic - filled with eggs and relish and bits of onion and peppers. Their macaroni and cheese is so rich it's almost sickening. And their cornbread - I could eat a whole pan of it. Their food is mostly very sweet. There's a whole lot of brown sugar flying around in that kitchen. The sugar is generally well used, but sometimes it's a little cloying, especially in the collard greens, which are otherwise very well cooked - smoky and tender. The fried whiting is awesome. It has a nice cornmeal batter and is great with a little vinegary hot sauce. This place is better for takeout than to eat in. I cannot yet say that this is my favorite barbecue ever because they were out of pulled pork, and to me, the BBQ crown is given based on pulled pork. That being said, I will be going back very soon to confirm what my first meal is telling me. Absolutely amazing! MEAT: Ribs (pork) were terrific: deep smoke flavor, moist meat. I got so excited when I went to pull my first bone of the slab and a clean bone came off without any meat on it. That is the definition of meat falling off the bone. Chicken was cooked perfectly. Juicy chicken that could easily be picked off the bone. Often I don't order chicken at BBQ places, but it is delicious if that is your thing. SAUCE: Sweet, thick, molasses (or more likely brown sugar) Texas style sauce. This is saucy BBQ and everything is pre sauced and wet. This isn't usually my style of sauce if given a choice, but this is sauce that can convert you. There is Crystal hot sauce and Tabasco if you want to add a bit of heat to your meat. Side note: I appreciate that they have Crystal, as I much prefer it to Tabasco, it also increases the southern credibility. SIDES: TERRIFIC! While I am not going to say that the collards are better than my girlfriend's grandmother's (I know better than that) they were absolutely terrific. Smokey, meaty, and sweet without being greasy. The cole slaw was sweeter than I like, but it was a drier, stringier cole slaw which I love. I can't wait to try the slaw with the pulled pork. The mashed yams were wonderful. Sweet, with some pie seasoning in there, without being toooo sweet. I had to stop myself from eating them in one giant bite. Potato salad was some of the best mayonnaise based potato salad that I've had. Relish, pepper, egg, onions... it was all good. Potatoes were soft, great texture. The cornbread (more savory than sweet) was a little dry for my taste, but nothing that sopping up a bit of meat juice can't fix. SERVICE: Even though they were incredibly busy, everyone was super friendly and hospitable. You can tell that this is a family owned place and that there is a lot of care put into everything. This place is homey and simple. If there are no tables, it's worth even getting it to go and eating on the hood of your car. $30 for two people to stuff themselves silly. However, the food was pretty much just eh. After passing the place a billion times on the way home from the shore, I finally stopped in. I didn't know what to get so the gentleman recommended I try the combo Ribs and Brisket. Brisket was the better of the two but nothing I'd ever go out of my way for. Too many large piles of fat in the cuts I was served. The ribs however were strikingly average, whereas I thought this would be their specialty. They were loaded with meat, but DRY. Really dry. Tasted like they were cooked too fast on too high of a temperature. I tasted no smoke in anything. The mac and cheese was average. The baked beans were actually excellent. The cornbread was good. I wouldn't say that I had a bad experience but for 24 dollars I'd probably prefer to go to a different location such as the Rib Rack in NE Philadelphia for a BBQ experience. My suggestion, please lower the temperature on the grill, and cook the ribs slow, because the sauce or the amount of meat was not what killed it, it was the dryness of the meat. read more

I have driven by Henri's BBQ so many times, smell the delicious aroma, but failed to stop by until yesterday. When I walked it, the place was packed and it looked like a buffet from a family outing. That is what gives you the feel of the homemade BBQ kitchen. The aroma inside is of that sweet rib sauce mixed with the char grill. My mouth was watering and couldn't wait to eat. The great news is that the food is ready to go, if you choose the buffet. For a first timer, this was a perfect selection for me for only $16.95. Everything was great and freshly made. The mashed sweet potatoes were rich and tasted like a warm pumpkin pie loaded with melted marshmallows. The ribs were sweet and the meat just falls right off of the bone. The crab bisque was so tasty, but was light on the crab meat. That might have been because I came a little later. The buffet is a tight squeeze so you need to wait patiently at times. All in all, this is a terrific spot to stop by on your way to the shore or on your way home. Also, and ideal spot to tickle that sweet tooth when you're craving some soulful BBQ cooking. read more

When the worst thing you can say about a place is that you're afraid you won't have enough room for a second or third plate, you're doing something right. If I absolutely had to pick a weak spot, I guess it would be the green beans? But they are green beans...there is only so much you can do. The collards, the black eyed peas, the yams, the chicken, the rice, the jerk turkey, even the crab bisque...they were all on point. The service was so homey and friendly, the food was ridiculous for the price, and the atmosphere is just what you want in a barbecue joint...welcoming, comforting, and supportive of overeaters like myself.
