I looked at the reviews and the photos seemed a bit polished so I head over to the -oogle and read some more reviews. Now, as I am searching I did not see any photos of patrons of the highly melinated hue (This matters due to texture of certain hair types because some barbers just don't know/had the opportunity to style these beards, just barber facts, no slight against anyone.) I look at the reviews and the pictures again and I am digging the vibe Big Kat's Barbershop is giving off so I took a chance. Parking on the street is scarce so get your walk on. It is bright outside, I open the door and it takes a minute for my eyes to adjust. The barbers in the shop look at me, I look at them (it seems like slow motion, but in reality it was probably like 8 sec). As my eyes are still adjusting, I hear a voice asking if I need a beard and haircut? I look and notice is was a barber with a long beard in the first chair as you enter the shop. In my head, I am like Aww, heck naw (if you know, you know)!! I give him a quick once over and see how manicured and healthy his beard is so I am like if he can maintain that on a personal level then he has the skills to tackle this wild, beast of a beard I have been growing for 6 months. He listened to exactly what and how I wanted my beard to look when finished. Before we, began, he asked who cut my beard last because they jacked it up (previous barber tried to layer and fade the sides of a curly beard with out straighten it out). We had a laugh and the artist began to work. I had to have a couple hot towel treatments, steamer comb and moisturizer before my beard was manageable. By the end, I jumped out of the chair with a clean head shave, fresh styled beard ready to take on the world and vacay in style. I had been a customer for ten years, but not now. Richard, and to some extent his son, are the main players here. They toil day in and day out in a physically unattractive, dirty space. Someone wrote the shop is in a remodeled old house, but not so much. The bathroom is circa Galveston flood, but that's not a reason to stay away. Haircuts are inconsistent if you require anything that vaires from the clipper guard system, anything that requires real concentration on the part of the barber. The skill level of the barbers is mid at best and their concentration can be high or fleeting. When it's fleeting, you'll get chop job. I don't expect barbers to be skilled conversationalists, but when they've seen the same customer once a month for 10 years, they cannot be excused for asking the same dumb ass questions time after time. Paying extra for a quality haircut should consistently snag the customer one each and every time.

Alright so after the business owner responding to my initial review and being rude, I figured I would provide an update and more context for my Yelp people. Yes, I was given a $10 haircut by Danny the last time I was there. But Victor, the owner and the barber I booked the appointment with, texted me to ask for the rest of the money! So you can't reach out to let me know you can't make the appointment that I booked on your website, but you can reach out to ask for extra money? You weren't even there. I still paid $20, hopefully that money went to Danny. I want to reiterate, the first time I booked for a $50 service, and waited 30 minutes to an hour for a no show barber(Victor, the owner) on a Saturday morning. The second time was years later, he was 30 minutes late(yes I paid full price during regular business hours and it was expensive). The third time Victor never showed, called, or texted. Danny gave me a discount, but then Victor reached out to ask for the money back. Terrible business plan. Afterhours would be better off always charging $10 for a cut, or better yet, paying people to come into this sorry excuse of a barbershop. I would like to add that Danny was great and did his best to provide the level of service that Afterhours advertises. The shop is just not on that level. Danny should cut in a different shop where he can work with better coworkers and thrive in a professional environment. If Danny was the owner, this place would be much better off. Victor, hopefully you learn your lesson about how to treat customers. Instead of you providing terrible service and getting mad when customers leave accurate reviews, you should man up and take the feedback constructively and use it to make your business better.
