Now for the wine..... everything we tasted was either Very Good or Outstanding which I seldom experience in all the wineries my wife and I visit. I fully recommend giving these folks a try.

We had an hour or so to spare before check-in, and I found this highly rated winery on Yelp, so I thought it would be a good place to stop for a break. It was an enjoyable drove along narrow country roads from the main highway in late October, with the trees showing their fall colors and fields of grass waving in the sun. Our GPS guided us to the front entrance, after which it got a bit confused as the paved, one-lane access road wound this way and that. We followed the signs to the tasting room and entered the medium-sized, stonewalled tasting room. We hadn't called ahead for a reservation, given the time of year, but the attendant welcomed us with open arms. He provided a great description of the vintner background, the winery, and the diversity of wines they grow. While I had tasted several Pinot Noirs from the Umpqua Valley, I wasn't aware of the other varietals. The attendant was very accommodating, letting us taste several different wines, especially as my wife is not as interested in wine as I am. I'm not a big fan of most white wines, although they are known for their Grüner Veltliner. I wasn't keen on the GV, but their Sauv Blanc was quite good for a US offering (we both like NZ Sauv Blancs a lot). On the darker side, their Syrah was just okay, but their Tempranillo was the best U.S. example of this varietal that I've ever had, and just a bit below some of the amazing ones I've had the pleasure to taste from Spain. It was so impressive that I decided to sign up for their quarterly wine club, which had been the farthest thing from my mind when I entered, but I've been very impressed with the shipments I've received so far. Lovely wines from a pretty vineyard in the Umpqua Valley of Oregon.

5 Stars - A Perfect Anniversary Getaway!…read more My wife Tiffany and I stayed at the guest house at Cooper Ridge Vineyards over the 4th of July weekend for our anniversary, and we had an absolutely wonderful time. The guest house was spotless, very reasonably priced, and gave us the complete run of the vineyard once the tasting room closed. It was so peaceful and relaxing. The property offers both 1- and 2-bedroom options and has gorgeous views overlooking the North Umpqua River and the vineyards perfect for morning coffee or evening wine on the patio. Steve and Paula, the owners, are wonderful, warm people who were incredibly accommodating and made us feel right at home. Their wines are superb, especially the pomegranate sparkling wine, which quickly became our favorite. We also loved the complimentary charcuterie board! The guest house was well-equipped with a washer and dryer, iron, full refrigerator, coffee maker, and plenty of dishware -- everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Located in beautiful Douglas County wine country, it's conveniently just minutes away from many other wineries, making it an ideal base for exploring the Umpqua Valley. Do yourself a favor and book a stay with Steve and Paula at Cooper Ridge Vineyards. You won't be disappointed!

During our first three visits we did a regular tasting while sitting under a vine-covered trellis with vineyards on three sides. Hailey of the tasting room took exceptional care of us during our 2024 and 2025 visits. 2026 Aug REVIEW: As in the previous two years (2024 / 2025) during our WA/OR wine road trips, we visited Abacela in August. This time three of us did a VINEYARD TOUR hosted by the CEO, Greg Jones. Exceeded expectations. SERVICE and AMBIANCE: 5.0. Every person we encountered was a pleasure: as with our previous three visits, we felt valued as customers. During the tour of the vineyards with Greg we learned much, including about the vines in both American and European vineyards, the varietals nurtured by Abacela, how Greg and his father had chosen the site for Abacela, and more. At each stop Greg poured us a wine to taste. A special treat was viewing the vines of Listan Prieto that Greg's father found on the property; these vines are thought to have been planted by the original homesteaders. This variety was carried into California with Spanish Catholic missionaires in order to grow grapes for creating wine for religious services. Abacela now produces "Angelica" wine from this varietal. After our drive through the vineyards we viewed the wine-making and wine-storage areas; from there we walked through a subterranean corridor to our starting point: Abacela's attractive tasting room. There, on the outside patio, Joe served us a generous cheese/charcuterie/etc plate with a flight of reserve wines. A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE. During our 2025 visit my wife and I brought a wine expert from Japan on our WA/OR wine road trip. She enjoyed the wines and the atmosphere at Abacela, as well as the short outside trail with signs that describe the terroir of Abacela's various vineyards. She found Abacela to be a place that those with a special interest in wine would enjoy. WINE: 4.5. Abacela focuses on Iberian (Spanish and Portugeuse) varietals. As during our previous visits, we enjoyed the wines and bought a few bottles to take home with us.
