Nice, a lite Pinot with a decent finish. The 100 Valley Pinot left me wanting something more. Finished off the tasting with their GSM. It was nice an easy drinking wine. A table wine. I can't help but wonder how these would have tasted in a good wine glass. That is my major negative here. The stemware is small stemless glasses with a huge lip. To see how these wines actually taste they should upgrade their tasting glass. Possibly a Reidel Oregon Pinot glass.

Their dog-friendly patio made the perfect spot for us to relax. We were on the hunt for some white wines, and Amy, our gracious host, created a custom tasting to help us find the perfect bottles to take home. We had an hour or so to spare before check-in, and I found this highly rated winery on Yelp, so I thought it would be a good place to stop for a break. It was an enjoyable drove along narrow country roads from the main highway in late October, with the trees showing their fall colors and fields of grass waving in the sun. Our GPS guided us to the front entrance, after which it got a bit confused as the paved, one-lane access road wound this way and that. We followed the signs to the tasting room and entered the medium-sized, stonewalled tasting room. We hadn't called ahead for a reservation, given the time of year, but the attendant welcomed us with open arms. He provided a great description of the vintner background, the winery, and the diversity of wines they grow. While I had tasted several Pinot Noirs from the Umpqua Valley, I wasn't aware of the other varietals. The attendant was very accommodating, letting us taste several different wines, especially as my wife is not as interested in wine as I am. I'm not a big fan of most white wines, although they are known for their Grüner Veltliner. I wasn't keen on the GV, but their Sauv Blanc was quite good for a US offering (we both like NZ Sauv Blancs a lot). On the darker side, their Syrah was just okay, but their Tempranillo was the best U.S. example of this varietal that I've ever had, and just a bit below some of the amazing ones I've had the pleasure to taste from Spain. It was so impressive that I decided to sign up for their quarterly wine club, which had been the farthest thing from my mind when I entered, but I've been very impressed with the shipments I've received so far. It is a bit of a drive off the beaten path but so worth it. In addition to the exquisite wines, the view is impressive. The first time we visited Spire Mountain Cellars, we joined the wine club. We love bold reds and the winemaker delivers! The tasting room is rustic and comfy. There is seating outside, also. Some of the area is covered and some isn't so there are a variety of seating options. It is closed in the winter so go quickly if you want to check it out. We will make sure we get in a couple more visits before it closes and will wait as patiently as possible until it opens again in the spring. I will take photos next time and update this post.

Located in an 120 year-old barn in cottage Grove, Oregon at the southern end of the Willamette Valley. This is a beautiful spot. There's a large gravel parking lot with tables and chairs outside for the perfect tasting experience during the summer and fall months. Inside there are a number of large tables and seating at the bar if you're not into meeting new people at your table. During my visit, the young lady, waiting on us was outstanding both in terms of her customer service and her knowledge about Saginaw wines, and wines in general. She made great recommendations to everyone who came into the tasting room. There are food options here with both a small and large cheeseboard, and some 10 inch pizzas. Both of these go very well as an accompaniment to the wine. I particularly liked the Malbec with the cheeseboard. There is also a Muller Thurgau white that is really good. A great German food wine, unusual to find in the US! I was there on a Saturday afternoon and the place was really buzzing by 4-5 pm as it filled up with locals. Very impressive wines that have won awards in Oregon. Their Pinot Niur is not the fruit bomb you find in California, but a very pleasant, light drinking wine with a bit of a spicy backbone, reminiscent of a Syrah.
