So happy we got turned on to this winery. The first time we came we met Charles the owner and he was very hospitable, and we talked and drank wine and enjoyed every wine that we tasted! We took home six bottles, a mix of red, rose and white all very good! Today we decided to go back and pick up more and we met Peggy, Charles wife and I am so glad we did! she is an amazing host, funny and personable we could have talked for hours. In the context of a truly mom and pop winery, this is as good as it gets. Five happy stars for the hospitality and the wine! Becker wines are not sold in retail outlets, so a visit to the winery is both fun and the only way to buy these really good wines. HOSPITALITY: We loved every minute of the time we spent at Becker. From meeting owners Charles and Peggy as well as winery dogs Mueller (140 pounds of pure sweetness in a black lab and St. Bernard mix) and Willow (a beautiful bloodhound) to talking to Peggy about their wines and about the art and science of winemaking in general. We tasted several Becker wines and bought several bottles to take with us. We even loved the reason for a bit of a traffic delay on the road leading up to Becker. But you'll have to look at the photos to find the source of that! (Hint: Guinea fowl, anyone?) TASTING SET UP: No tasting fee, at least on the day we were there, and several bottlings were offered for tasting. We enjoyed every wine we tasted and bought eight bottles. Very good value of affordable prices for wine of this very good quality with an additional 20% off with purchase of six bottles or more. WINE: Producing 600 cases of wine a year, the Beckers plant the vines, tend them and make the wines themselves too. This is the essence of artisan wine making. If you want to know why decisions were made in the various vintage years or why one type of oak barrel was chosen over another for aging of their reds, when the wine maker who is hands-on for the decisions is doing the pouring, it's a fun discussion. Becker whites were crisp with nicely balanced acid and an extended finish. Lots of pear and apple on the nose and palate for the Pinot Gris made it particularly yummy and we are always delighted to find such good Mueller Thurgau as made here. The reds were bold and even as young as they are had restrained tannins letting the flavor of the grapes shine. These Pinot Noir had "oomph", in particular the 2009 Reserve which was one of three being tasted. I particularly liked the sort of peppery finish on the Reserve PN, reminiscent of Syrah. These are entirely different than Pinot Noir produced from Willamette Valley grapes. A very nice outcome for my palate. We bought the PN Reserve, Mueller Thurgau, Syrah, Pinot Gris and a blended red called Mud Dog. The latter, named for winery dog Mueller who appears on the label, is a blend of Cabernet, Syrah and Pinot Noir. Peggy says for Willow not to be left out, she and Charles are working on a new blended wine named for her! Becker wines are good to drink now and if we can exercise the restraint to lay them down for a bit, they will get even better. THIS N THAT: 1) The owners had the interest in equal access for all wine drinkers and they installed ramps into the charming (wood ceiling, big patterned rugs), cozy (fresh flowers on tables) tasting room. 2) Travel Tip if you visit Becker, here's a suggestion for a lovely afternoon: a) Start with a nosh at My Coffee in Roseburg - a great neighborhood place. b) Then head to Becker. c) Afterwards, for the other end of the money and size spectrum in winemaking, drive to nearby Reustle Prayer Rock Vineyards for a unique tasting experience. d) Then take the beautiful back country drive to Lighthouse Center Bakery in Umpqua for wonderful vegan and vegetarian breads and other good things to eat in or take away to use when you pop the cork on a bottle of Becker wine that evening. What a wonderful experience! We stopped by on our way back up to Portland and had a lovely time. Charlie and Peggy manage the entire vineyard, from the grapes to the tasting room. They couldn't have been more friendly and their wine was super good! This is the type of place you could hang out at, and we really loved that about it. The owners had just finished up a bus tour when we showed up. One of the owners came out and explained the situation so we grabbed the little table outside and made ourselves at home. It's so nice to just look out at grapevines growing for miles and be out in the country. Just drinking that up in itself puts me at ease. He came out pretty quickly and gave us our first taste of one of their whites. We had our dog with us and the owner let us know that he had 2 horses, I mean dogs inside the building. Our dog is just a little wierded out by her own species, especially girl dogs so we just try and not let her get too close, just in case. We continued sipping on our drinks and they brought us out cheese, crackers, fruit, and finally chocolate. The other owner also came out and visited and explained her wines to us. A great small winery that is hidden back in the hills a bit. Once you arrive onsite, Meuller, one of the winery reps will come out to greet you and show you the way to the tasting room. He's a little slow but he knows the way well. If you see Willow be sure to rub her belly too! The story of dry irrigation is pretty incredible and you can taste it in the whites especially. Much sweeter flavors and hardly any of the bitterness. Ample tastings and good conversation with the owners makes this a hidden little gem. Highly recommend. read more

We first met Charles & Peggy Becker a couple years ago when we went to their winery with some friends. They are just about the friendliest couple you'd ever want to meet! The winery is quaint and cozy. Sitting in their tasting room is a lot like sitting at you best friend's kitchen table. Odds are either Charles or Peggy or maybe both of them will be pouring, and they are happy to tell you all about their operations. They have a way of making everyone feel like an extra special customer. All of their wines have a uniqueness about them that is their signature. The whites are crisp and complex, and the reds generally have juicy berry up front and an interesting, spicy finish. Rose and I generally leave with a bottle of "Dog's Drool" (a crisp, fruity slightly sweet Rosé blend) for Rose and a bottle of "Mud Dog" (a bold, juicy/spicy red blend) for me. You'll not find their wine in stores so you have to go to the winery to get it, but it's worth the trip. Just be prepared to spend a while, because you'll want to sit a spell. There's no wine club, but if you buy a case, you get 20% off, and a card that says you're a "Wine Friend". That card will get you 20% off any future purchases forever. We had a terrible experience here. Judy, was unfriendly, unwelcoming and rude from the moment we arrived. We had three adults and 1 well behaved 5 year old with us. We walked in, were side eyed by Judy, I guessed it was because of my child. Then we found a table and sat down, before we could even settle at our chair Judy approached us questioning how many were in our group, and how many cars we had. Umm what does that matter? She said she needed two chairs from the table, one of us went to help move chairs and she said no not that one. Later on she cane to pour and stood there awkwardly before asking me to pass her the cups to fill them. She came to pour or second tasting and asked if she could take a chair for a new group I said yes sure, and she said well I need this one pointing to the one I was sitting in. So rude. Also there was a no dog sign at the front and two dogs were brought in unleashed. We won't be back. read more

Don't miss Becker Vineyard when you're in the Roseburg area! Not only are their wines absolutely delicious but the owners (Charles and Peggy) are incredibly welcoming and hospitable (along with their two dogs!) The day we visited, Peggy was pouring wines and offering cheese, crackers, and chocolate covered pomegranates. Yum! We tasted 8 wines and had a hard time deciding what to purchase since everything was so good. She also offered us a couple tastes of her special Bourbon fudge. When you go, see if she's got some you can try when tasting their Pinots and Cab. It's truly heavenly! The one wine that seemed to stand out above all the rest was their 2010 Muller Thurgau so we ended up taking that home with us. They make several Pinot Noirs, a Pinot Gris, a Rose, Cab and a blend called Mud Dog Red. Wine prices are very reasonable and our tasting was free. Becker wines are not distributed anywhere so you must visit their tasting room to buy their fabulous wines by the bottle. The night before our visit, we enjoyed a glass of their 2009 Pinot Noir at Raise Your Glass in Roseburg, which swayed us to add them to our list of places to go the next day. Becker was a terrific winery! Their giant dogs and simple tasting room were fantastic, not to mention the wines! They only sell out of their tasting room, so it's definitely worth the drive, especially if you like reds. It is quite a bit down a tiny road off a main road, but after a nice drive, and up their long driveway, visit the tasting room on the left and enjoy a simple delicious experience. read more

Hor d'oeuvres consisting of crackers, cheese, meatballs, and tasty home-made fudge were available to try with the wines (plus one star). In all, the wines were pretty good. I found the winery to be in a beautiful part of Roseburg - Wow! Their tasting room is tiny and when we visited we were served by the Mrs of the winemaker. We found Mrs to be a bit snippy. We asked a few questions about the wines and the area and her answers were in a less than friendly tone of voice. Who knows why. Her tone was short. Sadly to say that the pooch was friendlier than the server. We tasted most wines but didn't find one I could write a review about. Since we tasted what they had on their menu, we felt compelled to buy a bottle or so but as my over all review states - I've experience better! But, when one goes out to do wine tasting, for me anyway, it should be a pleasant experience. Because the Mrs was not in a good mood the day we visited them, my review will reflect this. read more

You won't find a nicer owner/operator team in the Umpqua Valley. I love the fact that this vineyard doesn't have any employee. When you stop by to taste, the owners are the ones pouring your wine and telling you about the harvest. They have tasty snacks and there is no tasting fee. Truly a homey experience. The wine I good. They have a lovely off dry Pinot Gris and Rose. Several reds which are served with snacks that compliment. While they aren't my favorite reds in the area, they are a close second. I think this vineyard will only become more and more popular as it ages and the vines age. They are doing something right! read more

We found this small mom/pop operation absolutely awesome. The owner was nothing but charming and hospitable. She could not have been more gracious and informative. Interesting to know that the owners do all of the work themselves...from planting, pruning, harvesting, bottling, packaging, and dispersing the various wines that they produce. It was also informative to learn that they rely completely on Mother Nature to irrigate their grapes...no additional watering here...producing the true essence of the grapes. We purchased several bottles of wine and our absolute favorite was the Pinot Grigio. We visted the vineyard on Thursday, July 12, 2012. On Saturday, we made a return visit to Becker Vineyards where we actually met another couple who we had referred there. Peggy was gracious enough to remain open since we arrived just minutes before closing. Truth be told, it was probably past closing. Thanks again Peggy ! ! ! Both days we enjoyed their wines along with several different cheese and cracker combinations. On Saturday, we were fortunate enough to sample Peggy's homemade Swedish meatballs. The ultimate topper though was the sampling of Peggy's homemade fudge infused with Makers Mark. I've never had a more tasty fudge. Unfortunately, she remains steadfast about sharing the receipe but it is totally understandable. It just makes me want to return as soon as I can. FYI: It is quite possible that Epi I. (7/13/2012) found the owner snippy due in large part, if not solely, to Peggy's mother-in-law's recent passing the day before. Again, very understandable. So as not to end this review on a down note, we cannot wait to return to Becker Vineyards. It will be a must stop on any trip to the Roseburg/Umpqua Valley region. read more
