Note: They participate in Too Good To Go as I saw someone get their bagels when I stopped by. Thank you for not wasting food! Came here to grab a sandwich for our road to Mt. Rainier. I went with a Poppy seed bagel with egg, sausage and cheese. It was hearty but the bagel lacked something for me. It was denser than what I'd prefer. The egg was a bit dry as well and could use a thicker slice of cheddar cheese (for moisture). We also got a corned beef sandwich and it was very good. The beef was perfectly seasoned and moist. They also have house made cream cheeses for you to choose from. Easy Parking on street.

Even though I travel the world touring with "my" artists, this was my first time in Portland, Oregon. Our friends booked us a personal guide (Adam Thorn Smith, highly recommended! ) who showed us around and made Yelp even sent us a message on the day like "wow - you know how to explore all hot spots on one day". So after the Japanese and Rose gardens, we took a first bite here at Henry Higgins, which was very good. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I liked the ambiance, and the lady at the checkout was nice - just as you would expect from a place you go to ;-)[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I prefer places with tableside service - but we loved everything we had - and yes, I would even use the word great for their bagels. I will not understand, though, why my breakfast sandwich with a toasted bagel, cheese, egg, and meat and a small bag of chips was cheaper than my wife's same bagel with cream cheese and egg salad (no chips, no cheese, no meat). I generally also have a problem when places do not offer any service but take my order and make me pick up (= "over the counter-service" only), suggesting to tip the same amount as if I were in a full-service restaurant, particularly when they had charged restaurant prices in the first place ($6 for a coffee, $11 for a regular, toasted bagel with cream cheese and egg salad). Again, we liked the place, even loved the bagels, would come back - but to rate five out of five stars, "surprises" would have to be on the positive rather than negative side.

Cute spot, but the bagels and sandwiches were pricey for not having a lot of flavor and the texture being tough. Coffee wasn't worth the $8 either.

Pretty good bagel. Got the lox bagel and a coffee was pretty tasty but was also 20 bucks. I don't think the lox were in house made so not sure the value is there but not a disappointment. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Cute little spot though and friendly staff would go back but maybe try a breakfast bagel.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

First time ordering from here, I got a plain bagel and a cinnamon raisin bagel, both uncut with a side of cream cheese. The cinnamon raisin bagel was great, perfect consistency, and a lot of flavor. However the plain bagel was inedible due to a hair being baked in to it. Which was disappointing, I know mistakes happen but the bakers really should be wearing hair nets. Hopefully this was just a one off.‍

I'm going to be honest with you guys. It's hard to find a good boiled bagel in Portland. So when I found this gem, I knew Henry and I were going to be fast friends. For me, a bagel spot can't get five stars if it doesn't have a salt bagel, and luckily for HHBB, they DO! And it was salty, chewy, and topped with scallion cream cheese and deliciously melt-in-your-mouth bacon. Even my vegetarian friends were able to find something here- and not just one thing, there were OPTIONS! From earth balance butter to vegan bagel dogs, Mr. Higgins knows how to cater to his plant based friends. How's that for great service? It's a small place but they got our bagels out pretty quickly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Not much seating but Portland has so much biodiversity, you can walk around while you eat and find something lovely to look at.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Worth the trip!

[[HIGHLIGHT]]The staff was nice, but the vibes of this place were kinda weird.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's super dark, the seating is kind of unwelcoming, and it's probably best to just grab stuff and go.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] This place has all the fixings of a Jewish deli; Dr. Brown's soda, black and whites, latkes, bagels/bagel sandwiches, potato salad, etc. My wife and I got two bagels with schmear and a black and white. The food was fine; a bit overwhelming with the schmear even for New York standards, I swear there was a whole brick of cream cheese in my bagel. Overall this place is fine but I'm probably not going to become a regular here.

$10 for a bagel with spread, avocado & tomato! I know inflation is bad, but two small tomato slices and a few thin slices of avocado...ugh. Sad times :(

Bernstein's is a popular spot - having arrived at the opening time we felt lucky to secure a table. Here is what we ordered: bagel and lox, garden bagel and raisin smear bagel; as well as coffee. Everything was so good that even the picky eater amongst us had no complaints. We also enjoyed conversing with other patrons at Bernstein's. Having quickly deciphered that we are visiting from out of town (probably by overhearing us talk - the tables are very close together) they immediately made us feel welcome and recommended places to visit around Portland. We usually don't talk to strangers, so being pulled into a friendly conversation was a different kind of experience for us, but the one that we enjoyed with gratitude. Overall, this a great breakfast spot!

We happened to find this spot along the way, and the bagels looked really promising, so we had to stop. We grabbed some plain bagels, which were tasty and good flavor. I also ordered a bagel with egg, but that one kind of threw me off. I'm not a fan of spongy eggs--they always feel a little fake to me . That said, I was hungry, so I still ate it. Overall, it was a good stop and definitely satisfied our bagel craving before hitting the road. I'd come back for the plain bagels, just maybe skip the egg next time.

I never thought I'd see the day when I'd give a Portland bagel five stars…read more A few things to note here: 1. Oregon is a miserable state for bagels. Arguably the best in the genre here exists in Hood River, and it's about par with Northeast supermarket bagels or the British Columbia approximation of a Montreal bagel. It's fine, but far better than the bagel-shaped rolls of white bread you'll encounter here. 2. Bentley's is in a neighborhood dense with bagels, but light on good bagels. The names of its bagel-making neighbors are familiar to the locals, but they're also a big part of the reason why expats go out of their way to travel across town and wait in lines for bagels that might be passable replicas of those they remember. My family is from New Jersey, which has its own (albeit unlauded) bagel culture entirely, and has spent more than a decade here lodging bagel complaints. Their last straw was a place in St. John's that moved to the art museum and then to a place by the Widmer brewery that sort of made a decent bagel, but charged about $3 for the privilege of eating one. Not with cream cheese, not with lox or whitefish--$3 for the bagel itself. Sirs, you can go fuck yourselves with that level of extortion for what's essentially a Shop-Rite+ bagel. Bentley's has been much more reasonable and consistent. In a town that considers boiling a bagel an artisanal option and not, in fact, a default, Bentley's gets its chewy exterior and density down. While I'm slightly disappointed that the dough lacks some of the complexity of its back-east contemporaries--especially on a coast where the tang of a sourdough is approached with such pride--Bentley's gets the consistency of its bagels down. It comes down to sound fundamentals: Bentley's makes only eight varieties of bagels, but includes right-coast vestiges like salt and onion. More importantly, though a single bagel is still $2 (slight sticker shock from back east), that gets into the buck-and-change range quickly when you get a baker's dozen for $21 (roughly $1.60 per). I haven't gotten the cream cheese or lox here because I like making life as difficult on myself as possible. The best cream cheese I've found here is in Hillsboro. The best lox and whitefish? Astoria. So if a bagel spot is going to be out of my way anyway, I may as well start the weekend picking up a bag on 21st street, hitting 26 for cream cheese, and popping up to Astoria for a room for the weekend. After nearly a decade and a half in this state, Bentley's has helped my family shorten the bagel map a bit and given us the best option the Portland metro has to option. Before you give up on bagels entirely and start believing things like "Hmm, maybe biscuits and gravy ARE worth my time," pop into Bentley's on a quiet Sunday morning and try it for yourself.
