Super cute place, but the customer service was appalling, I'm traveling and was wonder what was a staple from the restaurant.. which I was met with an intense rudeness interaction while also still not receiving an answer. The staff didn't know not one answer to my questions and when she did find the answer it was delivered with lots of rudeness and sass... also when I was picking up my food.. my food was picked up and slammed while screaming "___ order still here" again met with lots of sass ... It had been a long time since I had a decent bagel. I saw Spielman's and entered with high hopes. I wasn't disappointed. The establishment itself is a mix of all kinds of decor. The building looks like a cabin. Not necessarily my vibe but it is "Portland Weird". Still, I was there for the food not the scenery. The workers were great. Nice and friendly. A friend introduced me to spielman and I am sold. The bagels are so good! I don't like cream cheese so I am so glad there are lots of sandwich options for people like me. The sausage egg and cheese was really good and a generous portion. I ate half one day and half the next day. The staff are really nice and I love being able to watch them at work in the back. I thought to myself: "SELF! There is no way a PDX bagel shop can ever be good, or meet your ridiculously high expectations of a bagel shop. Don't try it, you'll only be saddened further." Thus I deprived myself of years of breakfast-y brunch-y anytime-y yeasty joy through sheer hubris. Such is life as me. ANYWAY. Somehow someway I found myself here, willing to give it a go, primarily due to its opening time of a respectable 7 a.m., which is right about when the ol' tummy rumbles for brekkie these days, and also about when everything else in the city has another hour or two left before opening their yawning doors to the madding crowd. And I was and remain an immediate convert: Day one I tried a multigrain bagel with lox schmear - just what the doctor ordered. My husband had a corned beef situation on the most delicious sourdough bread ever (I ate the crusts, who wouldn't?! Corned beef isn't my thing but sourdough absolutely is). It's hard for an Elder Millennial like myself to find fault with Spielman. The collection of cassette tapes on the wall, the giant It's It hanging from the ceiling, the clubhouse like atmosphere. That's not to say bagels can't be enjoyed by all, because these bagels are good. I ordered the Lox Sando which comes with copious amounts of Salmon, capers, red onion, and arugula. The drip coffee is tasty and comes out immediately instead of waiting for espresso. The lady at the counter friendly and straightforward. Order a bagel with cream cheese and lox. When I got the bagel I didn't notice anything wrong so I ate about half before I started feeling sick. Then I opened the bagel and saw that the lox had partially turned grey and rotten. I immediately felt more sick and eventually threw up just moments after I left. When I took the bagel to the counter a very impolite and condescending employee told me that "all the lox look like that and it's fine!" He proceeded to yell at me and embarrassed me in front of everyone with the disrespectful way he communicated. 0/10 would never go back and will report to public health. On the bright side, Spielman makes bagels the old fashioned way, boiling before baking, which results in a delightful crisp on the outside, chewy on the inside texture. You don't have to be Jewish to enjoy a good bagel, but it helps. I think it's genetic, maybe that is why we are referred to as the chosen people? Either way I am glad my life has been enriched by the bagel, and I am more thankful that Portland is starting to get a good selection of bagel shops that see the benefit in boiling those rings of happiness. The Everything bagel! Why, you may ask? It's all in the topping, the amounts of poppy seed, fennel, salt and other ingredients, not enough salt makes it lack flavor, too much and it overpowers. Happily Spielman's has a good concoction. The smoked salmon schmear was a little too fishy, it would be better if they blended it less and utilized small pieces of lox. It wasn't bad, it was just a lot. The space is really nice, very comfortable and thoughtfully decorated. Parking seems like it should be harder, but every time a space always seems to magically appear, if not in front then right around the corner. If I have one problem here it is the prices. There are a selection of boiled bagel places here now and of them all this seems to be the priciest. It is a darn good bagel but I have had better for less at other places. Now, will that stop me from getting my bagel fix here if I am close? No, I don't mind too much for a bagel and schmear, but I don't buy my dozen here. The staff makes up for it. read more

The service at this location is seriously the worst. The cashier is utterly condescending, rolling her eyes and huffing, acting like ordering 1 sandwich was the end of the world and that I was wasting her time. I simply, politely asked for a sandwich and she just kept getting annoyed and telling me they were out of things, and not to mention not telling me what is actually left. And then another employee was getting all annoyed that customers, who were waiting for their orders, were standing "in his way". I like the bagels, and don't mind waiting when they are busy, but the extreme unfriendliness of the cashier is ridiculous. She was clearly annoyed that a customer would have a question about the menu, as the woman who ordered before me did. She's just rude to everyone. She got my order wrong, in her haste to get rid of me. It's not worth going back to pickup the missing items that I paid for and did not get. Really delicious Nova Lox bagel sandwich. They do offer indoor seating and also have pretty good coffee. I asked for the sandwich on a sesame bagel when I first ordered. I then asked for some bagels to go, and ended up asking for the last two sesame bagels, apparently. When I got my bagel it was a plain bagel instead of sesame. Gaah I love this place!! Such friendly folks work here, bonus points for the awesome music they always play too. I've transitioned to eating vegan and have had no issues finding tasty food here.
