It's a little further out of the way for me, but I appreciate the fact that this is a full-service deli that offers carnivorous options, as well as vegetarian. Walked right in and up to the counter (no lines!), stumbled through my order while trying to navigate the menu with its nearly overwhelming number of options available. The guy at the counter was a bit gruff and impersonal, or maybe that's just the way his voice is on a normal day. I had the BTLA on a cheese and garlic bagel, while my wife had the lox special on a jalapeno bagel with swiss. For the kids, three cinnamon raisin bagels with raisin honey marionberry schmear. Needless to say, the entire house was pretty happy with what they got. Bagels were toasted just right, and were chewy and just crisp enough to sorta scrape the roof of your mouth (but in a good way)! Received my entire order, which consisted of five bagels, two of which were full sandwiches, in less than five minutes. That's a good 10 to 20 minutes faster than a certain other bagel shop up the street on Sandy, and without added attitude and a side of smug. I'd say this place achieves excellence for a bagel experience. A toasted bagel with cream cheese and a bagel sandwich is all we bought. The bagel flavors and textures were 100% on point. The jalapeño bagel was better than any other we've tried, anywhere. The jalapeño flavor was present and the heat was there this is not always the case. It made that sandwich perfection. The amount of cream cheese on the second bagel did not leave me wanting- which is the problem with most shops. What a perfect start of the day to hit a home run with this random stop. Solid neighborhood bagel shop. It's not my favorite in Portland, but when I'm in the area I will stop in for a poppyseed bagel and with one of their amazing schmears. I particularly like their cinnamon walnuit raisin schmear and the veggie. I'll often buy some to bring home. I'm from NJ where great bagels shops are on every corner, like Portland has coffee shops. Absolutely love this place. I get a porklander with sausage like twice per week. The bagels are perfect freshly toasted on a sandwich. Taking them home and having them later they are a bit dense. Stumbled upon this little gem while looking for a quick breakfast spot since the one across the street had a 2hr wait and I'm so glad we did! There were only 2 people ahead of us and cashier was really friendly and welcoming on the Sunday of labor day weekend. I ordered the eggs and cheese on a whole wheat bagel and my husband got the Sunrise bagel on a cheesy garlic bagel and both were so fresh and delicous! For the price and quality they have the best bagels that are so filling. They also offer espresso drinks and other beverages. Cant wait to return for a breakfast pick me up. *Plenty of street parking available just a few steps away. A solid three stars. Good but not great. Not a go-to bagel shop in my estimation though I'm sure Bagel Land has many happy, loyal customers. Of course it's all a matter of taste. I think an ideal bagel has a thin, crackly crust and a dense, chewy interior. Bagel Land's bagels are more like bread, more soft and airy than dense. And though the sesame bagels we took home were seasoned just fine, the half dozen or so of everything bagels were overly salty. Friendly service and convenient location. read more

As many who have read my reviews know, I'm from Jersey and pizza and bagels are two things I can be very picky about. Living in Texas for 13 years nearly killed me on those two items. Thankfully, when my father would visit he'd bring down a dozen bagels with him and I'd be set for a few months. I'd horde them. Moving to Portland and the land of foodie paradise, I was hoping for some good renditions. I've ranted about pizza, but really haven't had anything good to say about the bagel scene or really tasted much of it. I've seen the food cart down on on SW Alder and heard about a place up in St. Johns and I've had the bagels from the Sweet Pea Bakery and they don't even make the bagels. I've even had to sink so low as to buy prepackaged bagels from a grocery store. It was sad. I didn't see anything like what I grew up with. A simple bagel shop that makes their own spreads and bagels on site. Well folks, Bagel Land is one such a place. It reminds me of a place in Edison, NJ that we used to get bagels at called Bagel Bazaar. All the standard choices, plain, poppy, sesame, cinnamon raisin and others like whole wheat and jalapeno swiss. They also make their own spreads and they had cream cheese and lox spread. Oh happy dance! Belly lox is so much better than nova. Fact, not opinion. The poppy seed bagel I had was nice and crispy outside and soft and chewy inside. It was also a regular sized bagel!! It wasn't one of these half sized deals that folks want to pass off for $1.50. The bagels here are $1.25 and when you get a dozen to go, you get a BAKERS DOZEN, 13 bagels. Not many places do that anymore. It's the little things that make a place like Bagel Land great. How many places do you know that ask if you want salt or pepper on the tomato you added your bagel sandwich? They did, and that is great service. I will be back, quite possibly tomorrow. Really enjoyed our bagels! Hearty and delicious. Definitely stop by. The inside didn't really have any seating - except for a couple benches..but the area makes for great walking and eating :). Wow. This place was an awesome bagel stop in the 90's and early 2000. The new owner has his head in the wrong corner. He openly insulted a customer and her younger daughter when they left the store. He's super blunt when he takes your order. Looks your credit card over like you printed it yourself at home. Then when you don't leave a tip asks you "are you good?" This guy is not made to run a business. I would avoid this place at all costs so a new owner can take over. read more

Bagel land is very average. The good: it's a nice little local business, nice people, prompt service, good little shop that's a solid part of the community. Lots of choices of sandwiches, and breakfast sandwiches, and coffee. The not so good: sadly the bagels are nothing special. They are more bread-y than the nice gluten snap you want from a good bagel. Their sandwiches are also super filling, I could barely finish the supreme breakfast sandwich which had turkey, bacon, tomatoes, a big chunk of scrambled egg and cream cheese. Despite this sad fact, Bagel Land has some of the best bagels in Portland. They are dense, moist, and chewy unlike the dry bready terribleness i seem to find everywhere else. I live right down the street and go in often. In fact Yelp currently has me listed as the Duke. You would think I would give them 5 stars based on that. I feel bagels are a matter of taste. I hear people say "that's not the way a bagel should be,they should be softer" or "no a true bagel is crispy on the outside". Well I don't know what a true bagel is, but they make a good bagel, not perfectly my style as I like bagels a bit on the softer side. So this week my ongoing quest brought me to Bagel Land and I hate to say, I wish it'd brought me someplace else. True to Bagel Land's word, they do provide a nice selection of Bagels. This place is fast, friendly, affordable, and incredibly tasty. I went in and asked a bunch of questions before ordering and the owner answered them all in a friendly and caring way; she didn't seem bothered at all, which I super appreciated! The other staff person there (her husband?) was also super friendly and happy. I love business where the staff seem happy to be there and happy to help you! I got a bagel with a shmear (oh my God, their portions of their delicious flavoured cream cheese is What's Up) and a couple of bagels, and it was only 6 bucks including tip! I accidentally ordered a different style of onion than intended (they have 2), and they gave me the one I meant to order, they didn't seem annoyed about it, and they comped the cost of it. That right there ensured that I will definitely be coming back, and regularly! This isn't a coffee shop in the sense that you can sit at a table and do work; it's a shop where you get in/get out. I actually found this place trying to find a coffee shop to work in. It wasn't what I was looking for, but I'm super happy I found it! I had heard the stories about the owner (Russ) being a jerk to people; about him cleaning his ears with a pen that customers use to write down their frequent buyer coffee cards and putting it back without cleaning it, etc. I also have never gotten the feeling that him or his wife particularly want to be there. They always seem slightly burdened by your presence. But - the bagels are cheap and my kids love them, and I don't need cheerful service anyway. So, I braved Bagel Land for years. I came here at least once a week for a quick breakfast for the kiddos when I was too busy to make breakfast. This morning, I had to get my youngest to school early because he's volunteering for safety crew. So, for the second time this week I head to bagel land to shave a few minutes off my morning routine and get the kids to school on time. As I'm paying, Russ says "your card is not valid". I say "why?" and he tells me it's because I wrote "See ID" on it. I tell him I have been using my card like this for 16 years, that I prefer people to check ID if they're not capturing a PIN because it's far more secure, etc. And he says "it's not valid; I can't accept it" WHILE ACCEPTING PAYMENT FROM MY CARD. So, I say "Well, I guess I won't be shopping here again" (an exact quote; I wish I hadn't said "shopping"). I then had to wait for an awkwardly long time for my bagels (paid for by an "invalid" card) while customers who witnessed the whole thing shifted around uncomfortably. Just to give you some background: I have done credit processing integrations with Chase orbital gateway (avoid if you can), Stripe, and Authorize.net. Bagel Land is clearly not too concerned with card fraud. They don't capture a signature. They don't capture a PIN. They don't capture your billing ZIP code. They don't capture any extra element of data that might help prevent card fraud; which maybe is why he had never even bother looking at my card until today. He was clearly not worried about actual fraud else he wouldn't have accepted my card (and again - checking photo ID or capturing a PIN are my preferred methods of keeping cards secure). He was being a jerk for no reason. My kids will be eating at Grand Central from here on out when I'm too busy to make breakfast. read more

Stopped in here quickly to grab a bagel this morning. I was a little grossed out while I was waiting. There were bagel crumbs everywhere on the seating areas (only a bench and window benches that look like they're going to fall off) and the interior looked like it was deteriorating. Wallpaper is falling off near the ceiling it's just enough to make you walk in and walk out. Plan to purchase a bagel and take it home, you won't want to sit in here and eat it.
