Great experience had at this little bagel place that is well revived by locals. Bagel shops offer an array of bagels and some sandwiches, including a lox sandwich for 13.50. Place claim to fame is that they are NY style bagels. The bagels were solid. A couple tables are inside. Plus some tables outside. No parking lot but one can grab a spot on the street for parking. My group and I walked over around 9am on a Sunday for a tasty breakfast before a long day of walking around portland. We beat the rush, by like 10 minutes. We sat outside on a bench and inside the store and the aesthetic is a cozy modern spot. I ordered first amongst my group and unfortunately I think my ticket got overlooked. Many people who arrived at least 5 min after me got their orders before me. After waiting quite some time after my group had received and eaten theirs, I asked the man if he had made my order. He said something I couldn't make out, I received it about two minutes later. Only two workers that I could see, so I did feel bad for them with the rush of orders. The actual food itself was very tasty! I'm from Denver CO so we have a place called " call your mother" and it's VERY similar. It seems like the " call your mother" shop of portland. When Bentley's first opened, I was pretty impressed. Being from the NE, I know good bagels and have a hard time finding them anywhere else. The everything bagel and green onion chive cream cheese was my go-to for a while! However, most of my recent experiences have been underwhelming to say the least. As another reviewer mentioned, I've gotten the everything bagel more recently and it was VERY salty. The service can be excruciatingly slow sometimes, you can see what they are doing and don't seem to have a sense of urgency. When there's a line, it gets awkwardly crowded quickly since space is so small. Today, the bagel I got was SO small - definitely not worth the $4.50 (+$1 tip) for a basic bagel and cream cheese. Also, inside the brown wrapper at the bottom of the bagel there were what looked like bits of toasted garlic flakes or seeds and even a tiny bit of egg in the wrapper - as if they had gone to use the paper for another bagel, then used it for mine instead?? I even tasted a hint of garlic a couple times (I got a cinnamon raisin bagel). Very odd and slightly concerning. I'll probably try Henry Higgins again or go out of my way for Bowery Bagels next time. read more

I never thought I'd see the day when I'd give a Portland bagel five stars. A few things to note here: 1. Oregon is a miserable state for bagels. Arguably the best in the genre here exists in Hood River, and it's about par with Northeast supermarket bagels or the British Columbia approximation of a Montreal bagel. It's fine, but far better than the bagel-shaped rolls of white bread you'll encounter here. 2. Bentley's is in a neighborhood dense with bagels, but light on good bagels. The names of its bagel-making neighbors are familiar to the locals, but they're also a big part of the reason why expats go out of their way to travel across town and wait in lines for bagels that might be passable replicas of those they remember. My family is from New Jersey, which has its own (albeit unlauded) bagel culture entirely, and has spent more than a decade here lodging bagel complaints. Their last straw was a place in St. John's that moved to the art museum and then to a place by the Widmer brewery that sort of made a decent bagel, but charged about $3 for the privilege of eating one. Not with cream cheese, not with lox or whitefish--$3 for the bagel itself. Sirs, you can go fuck yourselves with that level of extortion for what's essentially a Shop-Rite+ bagel. Bentley's has been much more reasonable and consistent. In a town that considers boiling a bagel an artisanal option and not, in fact, a default, Bentley's gets its chewy exterior and density down. While I'm slightly disappointed that the dough lacks some of the complexity of its back-east contemporaries--especially on a coast where the tang of a sourdough is approached with such pride--Bentley's gets the consistency of its bagels down. It comes down to sound fundamentals: Bentley's makes only eight varieties of bagels, but includes right-coast vestiges like salt and onion. More importantly, though a single bagel is still $2 (slight sticker shock from back east), that gets into the buck-and-change range quickly when you get a baker's dozen for $21 (roughly $1.60 per). I haven't gotten the cream cheese or lox here because I like making life as difficult on myself as possible. The best cream cheese I've found here is in Hillsboro. The best lox and whitefish? Astoria. So if a bagel spot is going to be out of my way anyway, I may as well start the weekend picking up a bag on 21st street, hitting 26 for cream cheese, and popping up to Astoria for a room for the weekend. After nearly a decade and a half in this state, Bentley's has helped my family shorten the bagel map a bit and given us the best option the Portland metro has to option. Before you give up on bagels entirely and start believing things like "Hmm, maybe biscuits and gravy ARE worth my time," pop into Bentley's on a quiet Sunday morning and try it for yourself. read more

We were so glad to have found this place open on Thanksgiving. We ordered a half dozen of sliced bagels and 4 more Sandwiches. The bagels, while somewhat smaller than what I am used to, were fresh and satisfying. They had the right amount of seasoning for the most part. The salt bagel was REALLY salty but enjoyable. The everything flavor was my favorite. We got some cream cheese to go including the chive and the jalapeño one. Both were flavorful. The price was fair for what you get. Staff were friendly enough. Considering it was thanksgiving we were glad to have some fresh bagels and would definitely recommend this spot. read more

This is a small shop with about 3-4 tables inside and a few tables outdoors. I initially ordered a cheddar bagel with an egg (over hard), cheddar cheese, and green onion chive cream cheese. They unfortunately were out of the cheese bagels, so I went with a classic everything bagel. Oh boy, the everything bagel was extremely salty!!! That is all you could taste on there. I was having to scrape off flakes of salt from the top. Apart from that, the sandwich was pretty good. I do wish the cream cheese had a bit more flavor to it. They have a jalapeño cheddar cream cheese I wish I had tried out. I came at around 9:30 on a Saturday morning, and despite the crowd we got our food within 10 minutes. I want to start off by saying I think I just caught Bentley's on a bad day. But I must share my experience, nonetheless. I was excited to finally try Bentley's after hearing numerous recommendations from coworkers and friends. I arrived on a Friday morning, a few minutes prior to opening -- and they were open early! I walked in and was immediately turned off by the younger gal working the cash register. As a first timer, I had a few questions, and every answer I was given was served with a heaping side of attitude. Regardless, I was hopeful the bagels would overshadow this poor customer service. I ordered the most basic bagel order possible: scrambled egg and cheese bagel on sesame and a toasted sesame bagel with cream cheese. The same gal made my bagels and it looked like she just mashed the ingredients together and threw them in the bag. Usually, when I get an egg and cheese bagel, the egg is scrambled but formed into a patty of sorts -- maybe Bentley's does it differently because the eggs were so scrambled I couldn't eat it without everything falling out (see my photo). My friend's cream cheese bagel was also sloppily made, the wrapper had more cream cheese on it than the bagel itself. All in all, it was a big disappointment, but hopefully just an off day considering all of the other positive Yelp reviews. read more

I recently was in NY and had bagels there, so I had something to compare it to. I had the lox bagels complete with capers tomatoes, and chive cream cheese. It really took me back to my NY trip. The price is definitely cheaper here ($12 compared to NY price of $18-19). I think the price is fair. The bagel is tiny bit smaller though. It was good. I love that there are several options of NY style bagels in Portland. Service was good as well. When I came, there were not many people. It picked up right after I ordered and people started lining up to the outside as well. There are not many seats, so be prepared to grab and go if it's full. read more

Got there shortly after they opened so there was no line but people were trickling in soon after me. Smelled great as soon as I walked in. The menu is easy and straight forward. I order the cure on a cheese bagel with eggs scrambled and an iced lavender chai. They make everything fresh in house as well to order. I saw them scrambling my eggs on their stove and when the bagels are toasting it just smells heavenly. They use west coast chai concentrate brand and it is a good one! Nice and sweet but has that chai spice I look for. The bagel sandwich was fantastic! So delicious and filling. Even the cream cheese on it was just great. Highly recommend the place and will return. Got a cheese bagel with chive cream cheese, everything bagel with cream cheese, and a breakfast sando. It was all super yummy. A light crisp on the outside and soft in the inside. Bagels are boiled so it does have a different texture but it's still very tasty! The staff was super friendly and welcoming. Had a mix up on my order but they were very kind to fix my mistake. My second bagel experience in Portland and I will say while the bagel itself was good and fine, man is it small. Bagels to me are like ice cream, there's clearly levels with a ceiling that there are several high quality places are hitting. Like you can only improve on a bagel so much, then it's creativity and execution that starts to separate the high tier places. Bentley's bagels is definitely in that higher tier in terms of quality, taste, chew, schmear, etc. But at $10 for two bagels, it's just gotta be bigger than my fist. I have nothing else to add other than I had reservations about the jalapeno cheddar cream cheese, but it's good. Try it. It's cream cheese with some shredded cheddar vs. a whipped cheddar cream cheese if that makes sense. read more

YUM! I love myself a breakfast bagel and when looking on Yelp for some spots to try Bentley's came up with great reviews. Couldn't help but appreciate the logo as well wit their dog. I can't speak to the NYC aspect of their bagels but I can tell you that they are delicious and worth a visit! The bagels had a nice crunch on the outside but were nice and chewy still. I don't even think they toasted them! The breakfast bagel is a must try. They stack it high and the eggs were not overcooked and balanced out with the saltiness of the sausage patty. The chive cream cheese is also A-1 and would recommend trying it. They put a ton of smear on the bagel and do not skimp out. The smear had nice flavor and complimented the everything bagel. You will feel stuffed after finishing the whole thing. The staff is also nice and when our mocha was forgotten they worked right on getting that out for us. I ordered a salt bagel with roast jalapeño cream cheese. The bagel was good but not spectacular like I expected. It had the consistency of thick sliced bread and the flavor followed that thought. The roasted jalapeño cream cheese was a show stopper. It popped with fresh jalapeño flavor and made me want more.
