I take all my cars and trucks to Herald's Garage because Joe is an honest businessman who has saved me thousands of dollars over the years and kept my old cars running well for much longer than they would have without proper maintenance. The negative reviews here seem unfair. One is admittedly "naive" about his car and still received good service and the other may have had a language barrier, but was happy with the mechanic. These don't justify one-star ratings. Trust all the positive ones. To keep your vehicles running well for 10 to 15 years and more, like I do, you will need an honest shop like Herald's Garage and you should expect to spend some money on maintenance. I'm all for supporting local business. Do most of my shopping in Paramount as a resident. When it was time to get an oil change on my car, I entrusted my commuter vehicle to the wisdom of Yelp for a local, quality mechanic rather than go back to the dealer which has maintained it perfectly for 5 years. With so very few reviews for this establishment I took a chance. This was a true letdown. Joe is knowledgeable but not every driver should receive a lecture on what each of the vehicle perceived problems is or how he provides better service than the dealer. He uses this pitch to tack on additional work to his clients. He pitched a customer over the phone while I waited and used the same alarmist message with me 20 minutes later. I declined several recommendations that I know the dealer had performed within the past 9 months. And, although he will respect your decision on what maintenance you want, his "nice guy" act will go away very quickly. Onto the oil change. Fast and to the point. Waited less than 30 minutes. I was very pleased... Four stars, anyone? Sadly, the story does not end well. When the next oil change was due, I decided to take the car back to the dealer. I realized that I had paid more at Herald's Garage and gotten less than what the dealer provides (complimentary hand break adjustment, 12-point inspection, and battery test and maintenance; all these were at additional cost at Herald's). My technician also called me into his station to share with me that the prior oil filter installation was done IMPROPERLY! The filter was likely torqued with an air gun or overtightened with a wrench. I had to sign several waivers for the technicians to remove the seized oil filter without liability to them (that or take the car back to Herald's). Went back to Herald's to request an estimate and turnaround time over some suspension work and serpentine belt/alternator adjustment needed. I'm all about giving second chances. His attitude drove the point that he is unprofessional and in the business of taking advantage of naive car owners. read more

The mechanic here is very rude, went to ask for a quote on a repair and kept telling me it's a big job i said I know, then he said what, what, do you really want it done, is your car smoking, ( smart remark ) I got in my car and said I'll be going somewhere else, while driving away they were starring at me the whole time like I did something wrong, very uncomfortable. Fernando was a HUGE help! I stopped by because my left side headlight wires were burnt out and probably less than 15 minutes later I got a call my car was ready! Not only that but he didn't want to charge me because he said he did it in 5 minutes. God bless his heart he made my day! highly recommend coming here they're honest people. I love this auto mechanic shop already. They have pointed things out for me and allowed me to see the problems before anything else. Came here just for 2 motor mounts to be replaced. Turned out I had maybe like 4 leaks of oil and what ever those other liquids are. It's all over the place. Another Auto Mechanic shop had done my oil change but didnt even bother to do it correctly. They didnt change the washer. That is leaking too. What a waste of money. Fernando gave me great advices. I'm waiting for him in the next couple days to let me know the total price for a fix. I probably won't get my car back until a week because they are always busy but I'm fine with that. Most places are packed at the moment. I won't take my car to any other shop besides his! I went in today for a brake change and the gut took a look at my brakes and told me they don't need changing. He cleaned the pads the the rotor so they don't squeal for free. He was honest and helpful and I'll definitely return when I do need my brakes changed. read more

Quality Work! The owner of the shop was extremely polite he made us feel as if we were part of his family. He offered us to go inside the office, turn on the fan (extremely hot that day), offered us water, gave us pens, & asked if we needed anything else. He & his worker explained everything throughly on the work my mother truck was going to need. Their very professional, very hard workers, honest people & honesty is what I look for! The next day my mother & brother went back to the shop in the morning and offered them a bread with cheese. Something NO OTHER PERSON OR SHOP HAD EVER DONE!!! Great Service! "Joe" the owner is super friendly and a genuinely nice person. He explains thoroughly the problem and possible solutions for your car's problems and gives a very reasonable and fair price for parts and labor. They replaced my rotors and brake pads and got the job done fast. I really appreciated that because we were able to put things into perspective on what it was I should do next. He seemed very professional but also down to earth. I took my car here for an oil change and the manager was kind enough to check on other stuff while I was waiting. He said that I will have to get new brake pads pretty soon. If he said I need new ones now I would've changed right there but instead, he told me to come back after Thanksgiving lol. I like how he was being honest with me and I definitely will come back for new brakes. He also mentioned that the shop is under new management. Having your car worked on can be an intimidating experience, especially if you're a woman and don't know a whole lot about cars. Unfortunately we are often the target of greedy mechanics lol. I got on Yelp and started requesting quotes. This place had very positive reviews, responded quickly and gave me the best price, so I gave it a shot. I needed a valve replaced on my Honda as recommended by the guys who did my oil change. I came in and was warmly greeted by friendly Fernando. I signed the paperwork and took off. However, once they started working on my car they found that I had another issue which was my serpentine belt. Since I don't know much about cars and I haven't had that done since I've owned the car, I had to take Fernando's word for it. Of course, unexpected expenses suck, but a car is a necessity in So Cal so I went ahead and paid the additional cost for the repair which was priced competitively. My car was ready the same day I dropped it off. I really appreciate that he showed me the worn out belts that they took off my engine (I would like to believe that they really did come from my car and that I wasn't swindled or anything lol but again I'm cynical and have limited knowledge about cars). Additionally I was given two free mugs, which were a pleasant surprise. I felt very at ease and will definitely be coming back next time I have a problem with my car, which is hopefully no time soon. Takes care of my car with "quality and integrity," just like their slogan! The workers are super friendly, and they always do such a great job everytime I bring my car in. They take care of my car as if it's theirs. Fernando is one heck of an honest dude, not your average sales guy who scares you with "fix everything or your car is screwed." He always gives me a full explanation of what's causing problems on my car, and gives me a bunch of options so I can get my car fixed without pouring in all of my money.
