Had the good fortune to sample the 3 course fall menu last Sunday. This was my 3rd and most thoroughly satisfying visit to this hidden gem. The chef has always been one of the most talented I've ever encountered - however the service (in past) has been a bit hit or miss. I'm delighted to say that last weekend's experience was flawless from beginning to end. Four of us for dinner. Spent 4 hours mostly waiting for food not actually eating it. We all ordered the 5 course dinner. Received our first starter and waited an hour for our second starter only be be told the fizzy shrimp we ordered was not available anymore. Then another 20 minute wait. Soup took another 30 minutes. Entrees came an hour later but we weren't able to get what we ordered. They were out of duck. I didn't want pork belly but that's what I received. My friend ordered the fish not spicy, but mild. It was very spicy and she couldn't eat it. Nothing was taken off of our bill for the poor experience and still got charged for this corkage even though we had to drink more to fill in the very long wait for our food. We left after 4 hours tired and still hungry. After this experience the $270.00 paid was not worth the experience. read more

My in-laws are visiting from Holland and my father-in-law loves Thai food so we brought him to Herb. Our servers were so friendly and attentive and the food was truly fabulous. Clearly the chef uses quality ingredients and while the menu is small, everything was executed well. The shrimp starter was a standout, as was the mushroom soup and the sea bass, although the chicken curry was so delicious too. All of the flavors work well together and we did not have a bad item. What a lovely surprise! This is not Thai food as you know it. The chef at Herb takes Thai cuisine and re-invents the flavors in a way that is familiar (like a warm memory) and yet totally new. Try the turmuric trio mushroom soup with heart of palm and herbal coconut broth, which was amazingly light and yet rich and filling. Fruit salad gets a makeover with a sassy chili lime-tamarind dressing. If you can catch the summer menu before it changes, try the salmon with chu-chee spice or the coconut curry chicken with kafir leaf and basil. With excellent, attentive service, and comfortably refined ambiance, this a good choice for date night or an evening with friends. A taste of Herb has me planning my next trip to Bangkok. read more

This restaurant was amazing. Our group had a total of 5 people. The presentation of each dish was beautiful. The food was spectacular, I mean amazing. I don't think I have ever had a better meal! The quality of the food, the ingredients, the uniqueness of each dish is without question one of the best Thai restaurants in the city. We have been to Arun's, and while the presentation of the dishes at Arun was just as pretty, I feel that the food at Herb was actually better. If you get a chance to go here, do not pass it up. All I can say is WOW! Every dish from the starters to the soup, entree and then dessert were amazing. Each dish burst with flavors. I had the 3 course dinner and was impressed. Each dish was presented beautifully with edible flowers and had a unique and extraordinary flavor. It was like being back in SE Asia again. Patty the chef and owner was so very nice and gracious and especially talented. The wait staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. The restaurant is decorated simply and tastefully. BYOB and casual dress is great. For the quality of the food it's like a hidden gem. I am sure it will be found very soon by many and the little neighborhood location will be booming! This small restaurant delivers amazing flavors at fabulous prices. I see the $$$ signs in the description above, but our meal cost $99 for two, but this quality, presentation and atmosphere is hard to match at that price. We visited on a Thursday night, when the restaurant was half full, so I can't speak to long waits or slow service.We loved the pork spring rolls, the spicy chicken soup, the trio mushroom soup, and both the red snapper and tofu curry. All ingredients were very fresh and all dishes looked picture perfect. Yes, there is a $3 corkage charge, but I can't imagine how this restaurant survives without the normal wine markup, so I had no problem paying. Can't wait to go back. read more

Herb has been one of our favorites since they opened a few years ago. It's a perfect pick for a special occasion, date night, birthday party, etc. Seems they get better each time we go. I can't heap enough praise upon Owner-Chef Patty. Her personality and warmth drives the entire enterprise and she seems to spend as much time in the front as in the kitchen. No detail escapes her and the place just hums along with happy employees and super happy guests. Other than some exceptional food there is a lot of good karma here. The evening is always a truly aesthetic experience as the space is beautifully designed and every aspect of the food presentation reflects the same attention to detail. The pre-fix dinner options, and there is always a complimentary "Bouche," are exquisite and never fail to amaze. It's all in the artistic presentation. Each plate can be a painting of art - remembering last week's frizzy shrimp and mushroom soup, oh so silky and artfully presented... yum! The selection of the china, the artistic arrangement of the food, the ever so attentive service will leave you a happy camper. found my new favorite thai spot in the city. this place is mucho authentico. i got the 7 course and my wife got the 3 course. the worst part was that when it was over, i wish it hadn't ended. where to start? service was good, we made a reservation, called to change the time the day of, and there were no issues. there's plenty of metered street parking out front, its not too far from LSD so it's not hard to get to. we were seated promptly, the dining area is nice with good decor and clean. bathrooms are clean, and the soap dispensers are automatic! you don't have to touch them! the water has cucumber flavor. this all sounds good right? but i haven't even talked about the best thing about this place! its the food! most of the thai dishes are really authentic dishes that you would find in thailand, but not necessarily at a lot of the thai restaurants in this country (notice pad thai and pad see ew aren't on the menu), and they're presented very well and really well balanced. that also includes the spiciness level, i can handle spicy probably better than most people, and there were a couple dishes that if they had been much spicier, i wouldn't have been able to finish them. so if you can't take the heat, either don't go, or let them know before you order. also, the price for what you get is really reasonable. if you can appreciate good thai food, this place needs to be on your list to try. read more

Food was great - I'd give it five stars. But the service was terrible. They kept bringing new dishes out before we'd finished the last dish, rushing us along. They brought the check without asking first if we wanted dessert (we did). Well, I will give you in short what I think in the next paragraph. If you want my full review read the rest. Herb's decor is outstanding, there is available and free street parking on Sunday. The food tastes good. there is a good balance of flavors and if you're looking for quality ingredients you will find them here. The decor and food are a good complement, but it all goes to waste with the bad service. The staff was very inexperienced and the portions were very small. I was very disappointing. This was a very weird dining experience. If the Restaurant is short staffed, they should have closed the doors at some point or do something to avoid customers being unhappy. Specially, when customers could give a bad review. Now, I took my wife and daughter ahead of Valentines after I saw the restaurant in Check Please! with great reviews. I really wanted something special for the love of my life. We had a reservation a 5 PM on Sunday the 12th (They open at five). When we got there, the host did not find our name on the list. Regardless, we were going to be sited on the bench in between two other dinners and we asked to be moved to another table. With a bit of thought we were moved to a four top table that was much better and more intimate. The Restaurant was more than half empty at the time. We waited for about 20 minutes before we got our water and another ten minutes before the waitress took our order. We were hoping to hear an introduction to the menu and the restaurant and maybe some recommendations. The waitress was in a rush and did not seemed very informed. We had to ask for the table settings (fork, spoon and knife plus napkins) The restaurant was getting filled with people by the minute. We finally ordered the food. My wife and daughter ordered the 3-course Prix Fix dinner ($38) and I ordered the 6-course Prix Fix dinner ($55) I had to substitute the Sea Bass with Salmon, since they were out of Sea Bass. I was really looking forward to have Sea Bass. I feel that they should have what it is being offered in the menu, specially when it is the beginning of the dining evening. Also, and my daughter ordered the Lychee drink ($6). And, we waited another 30 minutes to get the drink, and first appetizer (1 of 3 to come for my 6-course meal) We got the Crispy Prawns, only two per plate. The presentation was great on two of the plates, one of the plates did not look like the other two (it was a bit inconsistent with the presentation) The Prawns were cooked to perfection and the taste was amazing. We were so hungry, I was craving the next appetizer to come, and we waited and waited, my wife and I almost finished our bottle of wine, that we selected and brought to the restaurant for a perfect balance with the meal. BTW, they charge a $3 corking fee. It took some time to get the bottle opener as well. When we got the bottle opener, we had to open our bottle ourselves, not a big deal, and we requested and ice bucket that we never received to keep our white wine chilled. So, service was already falling short. After, one hour and half, the inexperienced waitress asked if we got our soup. We told her that we have not gotten the other two appetizers with the 6 course (recommended by the chef) - At this stage we were so hungry and frustrated that I decided to change my order to the 3 course Prix Fix instead, so that we can get the soup. The soup came 10 minutes later. I ordered the mushroom soup and my wife and daughter ordered the spicy fish soup. Beautiful presentation, you can see the ingredients before they poured the broth. The amount of broth was short, very little broth for such a wonderful soup. Four spoonful and the soup was gone :-( I wish they pour more broth, at least twice that amount. After two hours, now we are waiting for the main entree. We have no more wine left and we're still hungry. We had to ask for water refill. The busboy, try to pour the water with ice on our three glasses and after the first glass, he poured some of the ice on the table, I know, an accident. But, he walked away saying "I'm sorry" and leaving one the glassed half empty and another glass completely empty. He did not come back to clean the spilled ice. I had to clean it up myself. By now we knew we were not going to make it on time to catch our show. At least three tables got up and left after they had a very similar bad service experience and after waiting for a long time for acknowledgement. After awhile we got our dinner entree. My wife got the Vegetarian Bean Curd, my daughter had the spicy beef with coconut milk sauce, and, I had the Salmon with green beans. Each meal came with a side of white rice. Very small cup of rice, we never had the chance to ask for more. Needless to say, very small portion, but very good flavor. We finally ask for the check. To our surprise we were charged $10 extra for dessert that we never had. We had to bring the CC to the host stand and we did get a $22 credit.No tip$ given. read more

This restaurant is sublime. I have been three times, ordering the tasting menu each time. The taste combinations are absolutely stunning. This kind of inventive dining experience is usually well over 1-200 per person in my experience but this place pulls it off expertly for 40-60 per person. I have not had one piece of food here that was served in less than ideal timing and temperature. I just can't even describe how good the food is. The tastes are delicately combined/balanced/spiced/etc. I'm not culinary enough to know exactly everything that's found into each dish but the a servers describe it and it's just plain good. It's byob and they serve this cucumber water which is such a nice touch. My husband is half thai, his mother cooks very good thai herself, and I have been to Thailand with him a few times. This is the best Thai food I have ever had. We happened to run into the owner this evening on the way out and she was delightful! I will be back again and again. read more

Excellent food, excellent ambiance, excellent service. It's a lovely way to enjoy a price fixe dining experience. My friend and I went with a Living Social coupon. The staff at Herb couldn't have been more gracious (i.e. no sigh or subtle eye rolling because of a "coupon"), and enthusiastically went over the menu with us. The food was incredible! They have a set seasonal menu every few months, it seems. So, as with any price fixe menu, your selection isn't vast, but you should be getting a meal done very well. And we did! Now I get what the judges on Chopped are talking about when they get all judgy about the melding of flavors...so true! My friend and I made sure to order totally different plates, and it allowed us to experience different sets of flavors. So good! And with our coupon, the "only" dessert we could order was the "Chef's Whim" which was 4 different tastings off the dessert menu. Um, ok, thank you! Delicious. Elevated nouveau Thai cuisine (ha! yes, I watch cooking shows). So, definitely check out the menu online to see what they are serving at this time, and enjoy the byob (although the $6 corkage fee per person is not on the menu, or online, or shared by the staff - so be prepared). We enjoyed the crispy prawns and scallops for the appetizer, and the pork belly with rice and crispy fish for our entrees (I've never had such lean yet flavorful pork belly). A betel leaf appetizer was complimentary, and only one soup was served (similar flavors to Tom Kha, but no protein in it). And although dill sprigs graced most of the plates, the flavors of each dish were pretty unique, so it really made the meal feel like a true tasting. At the end of the evening, the chef came out to talk to us - LOVELY lady! She was excited to share that she'll be on Guy's Grocery Games on January 24th. This restaurant is great! The entire experience was fantastic. Each dish was unique and had a complex array of flavors presented in a very elegant way. The interior design was fresh and contemporary adding to the experience. The servers were very attentive and the chef made a point to visit each table to ensure her patrons were pleased with the dining experience. It was obvious that she cares very much about the food and the experience her guests have. We even got to sample some dishes we didn't order. The only point of criticism I have is that some of the dishes were quite spicy. I'll surely go back, but maybe ask them to dial down the spice a bit next time. Had dinner with two friends the other night and the food was amazing. All three of us ordered the three course meal and each course impressed all of us. Service was attentive. At times the servers seemed a tad awkward but this could probably be explained away because the restaurant is still quite new. Herb is a pleasant departure from typical thai fare though it's true to thai roots - perhaps more than the average diner knows. Waiters provide brief history of various dishes and explain why certain ingredients are traditionally used, often extolling their purported health benefits. As other reviewers indicate, if you enjoy spicy dishes you will be especially pleased. The quiet calm ambience contributes to the meal; many of the thai places we typically visit are super-noisy and crowded so we enjoyed the laid back vibe of Herb especially. Wow ... my taste buds were happy with me last night. I was very excited to come here and it did not disappoint - in fact it exceeded my expectations. Our experience started by being greeted by the chef, the service was fantastic, the food was artfully presented and tasted divine ... all in all it was a wonderful evening. I had the scallops which were delicious, the red snapper soup (heaven in a bowl) and the salmon which was perfectly cooked and seasoned and simply divine. Dined at Herb for the first time on Thursday. We'd love to give them five stars as the food was very good! However, the service was horrible. After a quick water fill and a promise for a never-to-come ice bucket, we saw no one for 15 minutes. And the restaurant was not even half filled. Order to food arrival was over 45 minutes. Then, the entree arrived within 5 minutes of the starter. Had to ask repeatedly for the check. Given other similar comments regarding service, I hope the owner will put in place a plan for solid service as the food is a delight and I would love to have them remain in business. read more
