The chef demonstrated excellent customer service and was very personable. She sent a complimentary dessert to the table and took the time to talk with us after our meal. She even took photos with us. I had dinner on a Saturday night with a group of friends and it was a lovely evening. There is a lot of attention to detail on every aspect of the restaurant. The fresh flowers, the lighting and the presentation of the food. The food itself is delicious. You can do either a 3 or 5 course tasting, where you pick your entrée. The meal starts with a amuse bouche that is a betel leaf full of coconut, ginger, peanuts and chilis. It started the meal with a lot of flavor in a small bite, which made you anticipate what would come next.. After that each course was presented beautifully with fresh and high quality ingredients. Some stand outs were the Fried Frizzy Prawns that were crispy, sweet and had a touch of sour. The mushroom soup was creamy with a depth of flavor and texture. The crispy fish, was perfectly cooked and had a slow building heat. Last the Chef's whim dessert that comes with the 5 course was presented on a 2 tiered plate with 4 different bite size desserts, each with their own pop of flavor. The only complaint was that the service was a little off. Everyone was very friendly even the owner came and spoke with us, but there seemed to be a timing issue. We waited 5 minutes for one of our entrees after everyone else was served and the desserts were brought out at different times. There are a lot of people working in the restaurant, they just need a better system for pacing. Overall, it is a restaurant I would recommend and look forward to returning. I love soup. So much that despite it being summer I had it for lunch today. It knows no season. That being said, the soup I had tonight, if I could, I would marry despite the fact that I was having dinner with my husband. We did the three course option and it was perfect. We hosted our wedding rehearsal dinner here in June of 2017, and Chef Patty went completely above and beyond to make sure it was absolutely perfect! When we inquired, they had recently acquired the space next door, which they were planning to turn into a private event space. When the week of our wedding arrived, they didn't have the space ready yet, so Patty closed down her entire restaurant for the evening to accommodate our party. Herb is BYOB, which stood out as a huge plus as we were narrowing down options (vs. so many restaurants that sell you a limited-time per-person liquor package). We hired our own bartender, bought booze and mixers from Binny's, and had it all delivered by Binny's the day before. Herb generously received the delivery and stored it in the kitchen for us (including chilling beer and wine in the fridge!) without even batting an eye. The restaurant is small, but we were able to successfully squeeze 30 people in for cocktails and passed apps, have a live band of 5 musicians play in the corner, perform a mini rehearsal with an "aisle" created by tables, and enjoy a spectacular 4-course family-style dinner! THE. FOOD. WAS. PHENOMENAL. We got engaged in Thailand, and were excited to share some of that experience with our family, but were a little worried about their conservative taste buds. But worry not, picky eaters! Even my brother, who despises shrimp and does not dole out compliments easily, commented that the Frizzy Shrimp appetizer was ridiculously delicious! Our 30-person group was completely blown away by the food, drank WAY too much (the downside of having unlimited party time and booze!), and truly enjoyed a very, very special experience. Chef Patty is so passionate about her food, sources her ingredients from a zillion small local vendors to make sure every little bit is top notch, and makes literally everything from scratch (even her soy sauce!). It's hard to imagine better food for such an incredible value... Everything the kitchen makes is delicious and beautiful (you eat with your eyes, first). It's all very thoughtfully and lovingly prepared, very healthy and easy to digest. You might leave full after doing a tasting menu, but you won't be over stuffed. I've eaten here a several times and will definitely be back again and again and again. The service is as good as the food. Often the chef comes out to check on tables and really spends time to make sure you are satisfied with your food, rather than just popping out and saying abrupt hellos to show face like some chefs do. read more

Looking at the positive reviews (and some negative) I would just say that it's so impressive when an owner/chef takes the time to respond directly. I generally will not review until I've been to a restaurant three times. I personally think you should let an establishment know privately if the first or second visits were subpar and then consider a negative public review. I know that some folks will disagree and that's fine. Anyway... After three visits, I have to give Herb 5 stars across the board!! If you read many of the earlier 5 star reviews, I agree with those! It was also a special treat to know that the owner comes from an area which we have visited in Thailand (Khanom). Was initially excited to come here for dinner after seeing Herb featured on Check Please & the overall rating on yelp. I wish I had skimmed through more of the recent reviews because it seems that I wasn't the only one who had a terrible experience. Made a reservation for 4 via opentable at 8pm. We arrived at 8 to a busy restaurant but there was an open four-top but they had a party of 8 coming in and we're waiting for another table to leave before seating us so they could accommodate the larger party. Fine, no problem we said we'll wait and 20 minutes later they got it together after moving some tables and chairs around. Finally we're seated and for 10 minutes no one has come up to the table to welcome us or take our drink orders, go over the menu. Meanwhile the owner and servers are frantically running around the restaurant, and finally we ask someone if we have a server. She finally comes to the table, no apology and asks what we want to order. I was going to order the fish but somehow they are sold out of the fish when they have a pretty limited menu. Ordered the pork spring rolls & fried shrimp for appetizers and the turmeric soup. Waited another 15 minutes for the appetizers to come out.. will say that the fried shrimp was good. Spring rolls were ok as well the soup and would not recommend the soup. For $11 is was like a watered down tom yum soup. So after waiting and waiting, it's literally 9pm now we ask our server how much longer for our entrees?? She goes to check and comes back a little later saying it will take 10-15 mins. I'm like "seriously???????????" She does not apologize and we sit there and wait. Finally 9:30 and our food comes to the table. My husband walked up to the host stand to pay because we didn't want to sit and wait any longer for anything. Owner never came to our table to check on us or apologize. We noticed that she was very friendly and accommodating to other patrons that seem to be regulars at the restaurant which is fine, but I would recommend also checking on other tables in the restaurant. They do not seem understaffed as they had several servers and bussers, but it was clear from the start they do not know how to manage the front of house. Prices are also high, our bill was $150 (not including tip) but maybe you're paying more for the flowers they put on all the food? Ps it's BYOB but they charge a $3 corkage fee PER PERSON. read more

Looking for a different spin on Thai food? Herb is the place to go! Literally all the food was fabulous. We opted for the Tasting Menu so that we could try several items from the menu. Even though the betel wasn't a part of the Tasting menu, the courses start with this very refreshing appetizer. It felt like pops of citrus and ginger exploding in your mouth. The next course was the crispy prawns. I absolutely loved the crispy shells they used and the prawns were cooked perfectly. The seared salmon blew me away. It was extremely fresh and complimented with a spicy lemon sauce that paired perfectly. The highlight of my meal was the mushroom soup. It had the texture and spice of yellow curry, with the right amount of spice. Given it was a gloomy day, this really provided the perfect warmth and brightness. For the entree, the beef was not only delicious and tender but accompanied with a great curry. The seabass was a must too. It was cooked to flaky perfection. My least favorite part of the meal was dessert, but that is likely my own preference and not a knock on the restaurant. This was the winter menu and I cannot wait to try the summer menu! To sweeten our experience, the owner was fabulous. She went out of her way to make sure our niece had food to eat and even took the time to chat about ourselves. My only cons for this place was the $3/person corkage fee, which I thought was a bit excessive. Also, keep in mind the space is small, so accommodating parties greater than 5 can be difficult. Sad to say our experience was bad We had an early reservation on a sunday. Were using a groupon that included 2 apps, 2 soups and 2 entrees. Service started out shaking right from the beginning. Just not attentive .They also informed us they were out of duck (no biggy we weren't going to order it, however when there are only 4 entree options , it wAs surprising) I had good expectations when i came in, it was recommended to me by a client. It just wasn't good food. Appetizers- tofu salad. Served in 5 ramen spoons.. was very spicy and pretty much just little Pieces of tofu in a vinegar type dressing. It was fine Crispy prawns- 2 tempura shrimps wrapped in crispy noodles with a sweet and sour sauce . Id say this was the best thing i had. But nothing special Soups- (both arrived not even warm, basically just resting above room temp and under seasoned) mushroom soup had a curry coconut broth which I'm almost positive was the same that came on our curry entree. Entrees- tried to order beef curry ( we were informed they were also out of beef but they could make it with shrimp or chicken) . Meh . Same Both as soup, under seasoned again. It reminded us of a frozen dinner Sea bass- which us $10 extra dollars making it $34. Was very small but good Dessert was a sampler of 3 things. Again not very good When we got our bill and i saw what we would've paid (over $100) .. i would've been angry to pay that much for what we got , so I'm glad we had the groupon. From the first bite of the Betel Leaf appetizers to the last bite of their dessert, this restaurant was an incredible experience that I can't wait to have again. The presentation of every dish was immaculate - even the order that the chef decided to send out the dishes in our prix fixe menu (there were a lot of appetizers) seemed practically curated. I'm hard pressed to not say that everything was a standout dish, even though to not say so would be disingenuous. That said, the Betel Leaf was practically a sensory overload of amazing. Don't believe everything you read! Based on YELP reviews we were excited to try this place. Arrived at 5:30 on a Thursday to an empty restaurant. Waited until 6 to order due to waiting for our third person. The waitress guided us on most popular dishes. Ordered two 3 course and one 5 course meal. The first two courses arrived quickly and were tasty. The entrees took approximately 30 minutes to arrive and one arrived 5-10 minutes before the other two. Awkward! The chicken was quite dry and bland. At this point we were going to be late for an 8 pm play so as we rushed to eat, the waitress brought "the sauce" for the chicken. Too late as we were pretty much done. The chefs special dessert was quite lackluster. The apology came as we were running out to make our play. My wife and I had been wanting to try Herb since we moved to the area two years ago. We came here on Valentine's Day. We did not realize it was a prie fix menu when we made the reservation, but that was cool we wanted to try a bunch of food anyways. The menu stated 6 courses per person for $59, however, what you received was 6 SHARED plates for $59 dollars. The food was fine at best, we have had similar or better food at other Thai restaurants, but with much better service. The only interaction we had with waitstaff was them asking if we received certain courses or not. Many other customers seemed to feel the same way. We spoke to a few and they expressed their concerns. At one point, the host asked if we received everything after 2 and a half hours. We shared our confusion about the number of courses, but she brushed us off saying this is a special occasion. To top things off, there was a $6 corkage fee. I loved the betel leaf starter, very unique flavors. The onion soup is the best I've had - very fresh herbs and spices. It had a kick to it. The food is delicious. The accoustics are not great. We had a very loud group sitting twenty feet away and their laughter was deafening. Things to know: prix fixe menu with only a couple of choices (but everything delicious so great by me) and it's BYOB. I wish they did not have only plastic water bottles for water. I was invited to Herb Restaurant by a relative, who had heard great reviews about the place. So I called the restaurant to make a reservation. The lady that answered the phone said that she needed to check to see what reservations the restaurant already had before she took mine and she would need to call me back. Okaaaay. I gave her my contact info but made the reservation online (the lady never called me back). So we arrived at the restaurant and there was no one at the entrance to greet us. There were other customers standing there also and two employees scurrying about. Finally a lady comes to check us in and I told her that we had a 5:30 reservation that was made online. She said that the restaurant's computer was not getting the online reservations. Okaaaay............ We were seated and given water and menus. The lady (who told us about the reservation problem) took our order (prix fixe). We waited and waited and waited.............. One of the waitresses brought us an appetizer. And then she brought an additional appetizer - and this appetizer was what we had ordered. It was quite delicious. However, we wondered where was our soup, tea, and entrees as we waited and waited and waited.......... We quickly noticed that the restaurant was very short staffed. The staff made sure that we were hydrated with water but we could have stayed home to drink water. Since most of the patrons sitting in our section were not eating anything, we began to compare notes about who had arrived when and how slow the service was. The couple next to us (who also did not have their entrees) got up and left. Then I noticed that 2 diners that arrived after us had gotten their soup! I looked at my cell and it was 6:53pm! No food! We had had enough and walked out. As we left, one group of diners told us that they had arrived at 5 pm and still no entrees! We had dinner at Herb after seeing a review on Check Please in February. Judging by the reviews posted since the airing of the program, the restaurant had some problems with handling the increase in customers, but I am happy to report that our servers were for the most part excellent. There was a serving gaff in that the amuse bouche that was promised was not delivered until we mentioned its absence several times. The owner/chef Patty Neumson came to our table to welcome us after we sat down, and explained the dishes (and the freshness of the ingredients) in a most delightful way. One has the choice of a 3 or 5 course prix fixe menu for $38 or $58. The 3 course can be 1 starter, 1 soup and an entree, with $10.00 surcharge if duck or chilean sea bass entrees are chosen. Starters run $10 to $12, soups $10, and entrees are $20 or more ($32 for the duck, $34 for the sea bass). It makes sense to do the 3 course dinner, but the portions are small. The crispy prawn starter was the best! Two large prawns wrapped in rice noodle strips and fried with a sweet chili mango sauce. I would not order the betel leaf starter because we got that as our amuse bouche, and even though I enjoyed it, I would pick one of the other starters to avoid the duplication. L*** had the seared salmon starter, which I found to be less than anticipated in terms of flavor. 3 of us had soup course, and this caused an interesting but not surprising revelation. The a la carte portion was slightly bigger than the prix fixe portion. I had the spicy fish soup, with two different kinds of mushrooms in a lemongrass herb broth. R** and J** had the 3 mushroom soup, in a coconut milk based broth reminiscent of Tom Kha Gai (but without the chicken). Both soups were good, but not stellar. For entrees the spouses had the Chilean sea bass, and R** and I had the duck. I liked the duck, served in a lychee pineapple sweet chili garlic sauce, but I would have liked a bigger portion for the price, a lot more garlic and chili, and I definitely would have preferred the duck breast portions medium rare instead of medium well. The portion size for the sea bass was probably a bare 4 ounces, and the fish did not have a lot of flavor infused from the sauce, which tasted similar to the mushroom soup broth. Be aware that the restaurant does charge a corkage fee, even though it is a byob establishment. I did a little research, and for years the Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection had been enforcing a rule against BYOBs charging corkage fees without a liquor license -- only to recently discover there was no such city ordinance. Since 2016, the city has not interferred with BYOB restaurants charging customers a corkage for drinking their own wine and beer, but most BYOB restaurants are not charging a fee. $3.00 a person is kind of ridiculous since the servers do not pour any wine or beer for the customers. Patty--you have a wonderful establishment and you are very competent. The presentations of the dishes are beautiful, but the value isn't there. We all left the restaurant hungry. For over $100 per couple, that's a bit much. I liked some things very much, but was underwhelmed by the entrees and their portions and prices. read more

My friend and I had a total of 9 different things and loved everything. Every dish was beautiful and you could taste every individual ingredient . Day 361: Herb: It was Allison's birthday, so that meant it was time to check the $$$ box in the Yelp search of nearby locations and find a well-reviewed place that also probably has a single word or a symbol for a name. (For those keeping track, we have enjoyed Fork, Two, and "&" so far since being in Chicago. I'm pretty sure once you complete a full sentence, you automatically become a Zagat Rater.) So, Groupon in hand, we went to Herb on North Broadway, where we had an excellent Thai time. It was a Sunday night, so things weren't particularly crowded, which allowed us to have the Trendy Dining Experience without the loudness (loudness, of course, being the trendiest thing of all.), and service was excellent. We had the four course Prix Fixe menu, which started with a betel leaf wrap that served as the Amuse-bouche (is it still an Amuse-bouche at a Thai restaurant? I guess if the "menu" was "prix fixe" it must be.) Anyway, it was a delicious palate cleanser that set the tone of the evening of multiple flavors (sweet and savory here) fading in and out and mixing over the course of a single bite. Next were the appetizers. I had the Frizzled Prawn. I have to admit, I did not know what Frizzling was, but, after seeing all the crispy rice noodles extended from the central fried prawn, I have to admit that the dish did seem pretty well-frizzled. Also delicious, as were Alli's Chicken Tapioca Dumplings. (One thing I quite enjoyed was the use of edible flowers on the plate, which were not only pretty but also balanced the taste of each dish quite well. Indeed, in addition to being tasty, the dishes at Herb were all visually beautiful, and one never got the sense that any of the former was sacrificed for the latter or vice versa.) Then came the justifiably raved-about mushroom trio soup which has a nice sweet-turmeric-spiciness in the broth that went quite well with the earthy mushrooms within. Also, very beautiful. For our main course, I had the Beef Green Curry. Loathe as I am to admit this, I am not someone who really understands most curry dishes, but I may be forced to change my mind here. I remember remarking how having a bite with or without a spot of coconut rice really did change the texture and taste enough to seem almost like two separate dishes. (I used to not like sushi too, until I found out that what I actually didn't like was bad sushi. Maybe curry will turn out the same way, since I loved this.) Alli's Pork Belly Broth Bowl was also excellent, if only a little less of a revelation. We wrapped up with the Chef's Whim spoons of desert custard and, as it was Alli's birthday, some mango and sticky rice for the coming year. Any restaurant that says that it wants to serve up truly unique flavors requires a great deal of trust on the part of those who dine there. Amazing food! Upscale, innovative Thai cuisine. Our cousin had raved about this place at least a few times to us. Recently he finally got to share it with us. It is just as wonderful as he claimed it to be. Truly a gem. People should be talking about this place. Every course was exquisite. Everyone at our table ordered the three course tasting menu. We each chose one appetizer, one soup and one entree. The chef/owner sent out a complimentary starter. It was betel leaves with roasted coconut flakes, diced ginger, shallot, peanut, bird's eye chili, lime, sweet palm sugar sauce. You wrap it all up in the leaf and pop it in your mouth. It's a lovely sweet palate cleanser to start you on your culinary journey. For my appetizer, I had the frizzy prawn. It was outstanding! Hubby had the grill beef appetizer. It was good as well but I would go with the shrimp all day, every day. For my soup I had the tumeric trio mushroom soup and hubby the hot and sour fish soup. Again I like mine better. A bit spicy but not overly so. Wish there had been just a touch more of the broth. For my entree I had the salmon with curry. It was so good, wouldn't even share a bite with hubby. The heat index on the salmon is a bit higher than some of the others but perfect for me! To end the meal each of the couples ordered one of the chef's whim dessert. It was a collection of tastings. My friends and I had no idea why to expect when we made reservations at this place. We were blown away by the amazing food that chef patty prepared for us. We loved that she was very personable and made her presence known on the restaurant floor. She greeted us and explained her whole concept for the menu. It was great that there were vegetarian options for our friend and could still please the rest of our carnivorous palettes. Started off with the scallop appetizer, crispy shrimp and betel leaves. Excellent light fare to start the dinner with. Every flavor that chef incorporated in each dish could be tasted individually as well as fused together. Not one flavor was too overpowering. Our main entrees consisted of the pork tenderloin and chicken curry. Not pictured was the soya tofu, but it was cooked like the chicken curry. It looked like a small portion but was actually a filling portion for one. The chef also sent out a complimentary dessert of mango sticky rice which was also excellent. 5 stars for amazing food and a great experience that the chef walked us through. read more

We had a really weird dinner here. The food was truly excellent. We had the chef's tasting menu, and everything we ate was delicious. Our server Sunny was incredibly sweet and lovely. HOWEVER. The food took FOREVER to come out. We waited 45 minutes for soup, which is weird because it's SOUP. Then, like 20 minutes after our soup course was finished, while we were waiting for our entrees, we were told that they were out of the entree my husband ordered. Shouldn't that have been determined earlier? Weird. Regardless, the food was really tasty, but it shouldn't take 3 hours to have a meal, most of which is downtime, when the restaurant is 1/3 full on a Saturday night. read more

Everything in this restaurant is great, therefore the 5 stars. The only thing I would keep in mind for first timers: ask if your entree is sweet. I was taken aback by a sweet masaman lamb. Also, the deserts are a let-down. But everything else was so carefully made and presented that I would still give it 5 stars. And they are more than willing to customize for vegetarians and pescatarians. The best part is the BYOB - a vodka shot added to their lychee cocktail is awesome. And if you want more heat to the entree, they provide chopped thai green chillis on the side. Bottom line: would go back, especially for a leisurely dinner with a large group of friends who like innovative cuisine and time to chat in between courses. We had a blast! read more

This place is horrible. Had to listen to the waitress blab for 5 minutes about her love of mangos while eating a complimentary dish of rock hard mangos with an over powering fish sauce. It only got worse after that. Every dish of our 5 course meal was disappointing or inedible. read more

Herb is like your mother's kitchen, if your mother were a lovely Thai woman and she served you elegant six-course dinners. The atmosphere is incredibly friendly (Patty is a constant delight), the dishes are amazing, and the service is professional and prompt. I had the six-course prix fixe menu, and each dish was stellar; there were absolutely no duds, from the betel leaf amuse-bouche to the dessert course -- four classic Thai dishes, each served on individual spoons. I can't recommend Herb highly enough. If you want a dining experience competitive to what you'd see at one of Chicago's two-star Michelin restaurants, at a fraction of the price, with significantly nicer staff, then you want to come to Herb. Attended for dinner last night for our monthly BYOB dinner. Amazing food! Prefix dinner for $55. You only need to decide on your soup and entree ahead of time. 7 courses of deliciousness. Just the right amount of spice with each dish. The starting appetizer wrapped in leaf was an explosion of taste in my mouth, everything that came after was fantastic. The only criticism I have is then asking us if there were any allergies, one of our members is allergic to mango and let them know. The 2nd dish brought out was a traditional Asian fruit salad and has mangos. They did not give her another option. Food allergies can be serious, this should be paid attention to. The soup presentation was gorgeous. The contents of the mushroom soup and spicy shrimp soup were laid out in the dish and the liquid poured over. The creamy mushroom soup was so good, would have cleaned the bowl with bread had there been any Pork entree, shrimp entree and lamb entrees were all delicious, will def return read more
