Recently tore my ACL but wanted some Mexican food and this is our favorite place. Showed up with crutches and the hostess went out of her way to ensure we got a booth so I could elevate my leg. Incredibly kind and thoughtful of her, because we didn't even ask, she was kind enough to do this on her own. I always love the tacos, but they recently changed from blue corn tortillas, which were my favorite, to a different type, and they don't hold together as well (the entire taco falls apart). I shared this with our server (actually picked one up while she was standing at our table and she watched it fall apart in my hand)--and she responded with kindness, saying she would inform the kitchen, and I believed her. This place has great food and great drinks and we really love it. Plus it's part of the Prime family so you can get points for eating here and at their other restaurants. Tried a few of the specialties for the holiday but the stars for us were the margaritas. Just a perfectly mixed cocktail that we could not rave more about. More of an upscale Mexican restaurant with some spins on traditional favorites. We will definitely be coming back for a regular date night or even their extensive brunch selections! read more

We came here for dinner after attending a graduation and the vibe was festive, service was timely, and presentation was good. But living in border states has ruined my ability to enjoy Mexican food that's just okay. Nothing we ordered was bad; I got the quesabirria and pineapple passion, and had a sip of The Earl. It was all pretty fine. But know that you're coming here not for the authenticity but rather for the experience, and it's a fun experience. Such a cute place. Interior is modern and very well appointed. When I got here a little after 5 there was hardly anyone here but I came for happy hour. Sat at the bar. Bartender was very attentive and offered suggestions. I ordered the watermelon marg which was super refreshing and presented well. I ordered the happy hour chicken Drummies. And the queso fundido add chorizo. The queso was delish. Great blend of cheeses and super flavorful. The chicken drummies had good flavor and promise but they tasted like they were prepared a few days ago and we lukewarm at best. I did tell the bartender the feedback just so they knew. About 20 min later the mgr/ownercame by and apologized and said they took care of them for me. My hubs and I had the pleasure of dining here, stopping for drinks and heavy hors d'œuvres. I'll be honest, we live in Saratoga where there are plenty of Mexican restaurants and most are quite good. Toro Cantina, in Albany, rates high on my list. The Classic Margarita was fresh and refreshing. I was delighted as some Mexican places pour a mix. I believe Toro's was authentic, made from scratch. We sampled Empanadas and mini Tacos. Chicken and meat. Crisp on the outside - the way they should be. Not too spicy for my tender tummy. Very good. The guacamole was fresh-made and also delicious. As this wasn't the first time I've gone here, it was probably the worst experience in terms of service. After our drinks and chips were served reasonably quickly, it took close to half an hour before the food came out. Besides this the waitress was very nice but a half hour wait is still a half hour wait. I ordered tacos and the chicken soup. My soup was good but my brother claimed his was the best he'd ever had which speaks for itself. His was the corn chowder. My tacos very much so fulfilled any craving hole that wasn't already fulfilled especially with the steak. My biggest problem with the experience was the fact that they "ran out of guacamole" I mean.. come on what kind of Mexican place doesn't have guacamole? I loved the decor which covered a large place, even in the bathroom. Especially the big bull in the front! Date night: We decided to finally use a gift card we had to Toro. I was able to make a reservation online on opentable for 7pm on Saturday night, which I love! Arrived slightly early and checked in. Had to wait only a few minutes to get sat. Tables were small and chairs are hard wooden not comfortable, some have comfier armed chairs not sure how you get those. The tables are very veryyy close together, we were basically in the table nexts to us conversation it was very awkward. -half star . The tables were likely set up like that for Valentine's Day. The decor is very unique, a fake tree in the middle with an open concept. Definitely a couple places for great photos for your Instagrams to beef up your content (the most popular one is near the ladies bathroom). Bar is pretty big and chairs looked comfortable but again close together, chairs touching eachother. As we sat down we had been asked if we wanted chips and salsa, like of course!! We also added to get queso, it was tasteful, salsa is a traditional mild and chips are served slightly warm (see pictures). A salad on the plate in addition to the rice and beans and the chimichanga. The chimichanga had peppers, onions, pork and cheese within it, in my opinion the peppers were really not needed within. In addition to dessert we ordered an expresso martini and a coffee. They took a little while to arrive with the coffee but were very hot and delicious. I'd say it was a good meal nothing terribly specials. Our bill was about 120$. I'd go back if we had another gift card to use or if other people invited us to attend an outing. Recently, we went to Toro Cantina and had their 14-inch flour shell Giant Lobster quesadilla, and it was LOADED. They did not disappoint with the amount of lobster in it, and it was delicious. Everything that we had was so tasty. We also ordered their nachos with chorizo (LOOK AT THAT QUANTITY!), and their cheesecake flan was *chef's kiss*. I don't even like flan; I never go for flan. The table was small and the chairs were not very comfortable and that's the only reason I didn't give 5 stars. When we arrived they instantly brought out chips and salsa. The waitress asked if we had eaten there before and we said no. There was no follow up to that. Which was odd. Tacos were delicious. After a recent YELP event which was amazing, I just couldn't come home empty handed. On my way out I stopped at the greeter station and placed an order for take out. While I was seated on the couch in the waiting area I took in the decorations and thoughtful ambiance of the restaurant. I especially enjoyed the framed prints of ladies in sugar skull/ dia de los muertos costume. It wasn't very long before I was on my way home. The kitchen staff whipped up my meal in no time and I was on my way. I ordered the vegan chorizo tacos and small classic guacamole to go. The guacamole came with chips but I was hoping for complimentary salsa roja to come with the chips but it did not. The tacos were topped with vegan cheese and salsa verde. The meal was enjoyable but I was still in sticker shock as I dined on the chips and guacamole, $43.70 seemed like a lot for chips, 3 tacos, and a side of rice and beans to go. Don't get me wrong, the food was great and I was still very appreciative of the event that I had just attended but I will reserve meals at Toro for limited special events given the prices on the menu. read more

The waitress told us that they do put oil in their guacamole, typically avocado oil, but perhaps they used a different oil this time (per the chef). Today I decided to go for lunch with a friend. There was a lunch/brunch menu. I ordered the chicken tortilla soup for $13. I expected a hearty soup to be brought out. What I got was a spicy broth with 2 pieces of shredded chicken and a fourth of a cup of rice. There were no toppings on the "soup" just a tiny sprinkle of cilantro. It was incredibly disappointing. Our server was nice and attentive and I will go again but I won't be getting the broth for $13. read more

This is an overpriced Mexican joint for rich people who are uncomfortable with walking into an authentic Mexican restaurant where words are misspelled on the menu. I paid near $30 for three chicken enchiladas. That's basic chicken wrapped in a flour tortilla for $30. It was not terrible but not great either for the crazy price. What made it worse was the poor waiter had a runny nose on full blast when he dropped off our chips and salsa. The snot rocket stretched from his nose to his waist (not an exaggeration). Beautiful dining area. Art and decor were the first things that stood out. Freindly staff greeted us and took us to our table. Large spacious patio. Comfortable seating areas outside. Sun and shade are available. Needed a little help understanding the menu, but I had plenty of help with explaining what I was reading. We had a very friendly waitress who was right on top of everything. Guac, Queso, salsa, and chips were delicious. Zarape De Pato was very good also (never had duck before). The main dishes were huge. We had seven people ordering 6 different dishes, and everyone loved their food and had leftovers to take home. Cooked perfectly, everything was fresh and hot and presented well. Met here for a girl date. I was skeptical but hopeful. I do love a good taco! We had a reservation, it was pretty busy for a week night. Unfortunately the hostess was absolutely clueless so I had so go walk around the restaurant to find my dinner partner who was already seated. The place was super cute inside! Used to be my favorite Mexican restaurant, with the best quesadillas, the recent menu change made all the menu items a lot more bland and their chipotle aioli used to be delicious now tastes watered down. The service is still fantastic but I'm not sure if it's enough for me to come back. If they reverted to the old menu I would definitely come back. read more

WOW. Food portions are huge, be sure you're ready to eat. We stumbled upon Toro Catina as we were looking for something new and different and we couldn't have been more excited. The place was full of fun, energy, and excitement for a Friday night. Not too long, no long waits, just a fun atmosphere with all the things you want at a Mexican restaurant. Our server was super attentive, keeping our water filled and ensuring we were enjoying the food. She was awesome and would be enough reason to come back, but the food was super solid. I'm not sure you can go wrong with salsa and chips, but these were super crunchy and tasty. Ones I would come back and get again, for sure. As for our meal, we got some items from the "special" menu; not sure how long they will be there, but they were definitely a highlight. The food was of poor quality, and the guacamole was most definitely not fresh; it was store bought in bulk (you could tell by the color). Why would I come to a restaurant and order guacamole if I could buy the same guacamole from the supermarket? The "carne asada" tacos were also terrible. They advertised steak, but it was just a few chunks of steak mixed with ground beef. I could have made better ground beef tacos with a spice kit at home. The National Margarita Day margs were also bad. The cocktail tasted only of triple sec, and when I told the waiter he didn't even attempt to rectify the situation (even though he was friendly overall when he finally would come to our table). The cherry on top of this poor experience was the hefty price tag. Prices here are comparable to New York City! Do yourself a favor and don't bother with this place. Go to the Chipotle down the road for better food. read more

For the price, I hoped for a little better flavor and more authenticity, but the food quality, ambiance, and service were great. I thought this place was a chain based on its location on Wolf Rd., but I guess it is actually local. We came in for a late lunch over the weekend, and the place was very quiet. We ordered some mocktails, which were lovely, and the salsa sampler. We had two orders of tacos (and a cheese quesadilla for the kid). The salsas were pretty good (as one who grew up on salsas in Austin, Texas), though mostly very mild. There wasn't a ton of variety. There was one unique one which was seemingly nut based. I actually preferred their house salsa that came with the chips over the sampler offerings. I guess it had some charred tomatoes or something in it, because it was a little bit more of a cooked salsa than a regular blender salsa fresca. Good, but you can't eat a ton of it because it starts to get cloying. (La Mexicana on State St. still wins the prize for best house salsa.) It's a bit of a pet peeve of mine coming from Texas, but it always feels strange to pay for salsa rather than just have a salsa bar where you can serve yourself. The skirt steak tacos were nice meat, very tender and probably aged, but it was oddly unseasoned. It came in blue corn tortillas which usually need to be slapped on the comal with some oil to be finished before being used as a taco. This tortilla was cold, which seems, inexplicably, to be a common mistake at upscale Mexican joints. The vegan chorizo tacos were a panic order. It was pretty good, but came in flour tortillas. (It says 50/50 tortilla on the lunch menu online, but I have never had one of those before and couldn't tell that it wasn't pure flour.) I think they were probably worried about the relatively wet chorizo filling causing a corn tortilla to rip and so didn't use corn. The were generous with the chorizo, but it was a bit much and kind of salty. All in all, I would have preferred to pack my own tacos. $14 feels pretty spendy for these. Between the two tacos, the kid's quesadilla, the salsa sampler, a lemonade, and two mocktails, we spent nearly $100 after tip. For the price, not sure I'd go back. It's nice to have some higher end Mexican around, but I expect a bit more out of it. Maybe we should have explored more of the menu, but I was kind of disappointed enough with the basics. 4 stars because the staff were awesome, they had good ingredients, and everything was up to a high standard even if it was different than mine. read more

I want to like Toro but I always end up leaving thinking they fall short. The restaurant is nicely decorated and has a fun vibe. I consider it more for special occasions than everyday dining since they charge a premium price and you really need reservations to dine there unless you want to wait an hour. I dont mind paying more if the food justifies it but there are more authentic places that charge less and give you more. We ordered drinks and an appetizer first. Our waitress was hesitant to take our dinner order at the same time because she wanted to make sure it didn't come out all together. Seemed kinda weird since most restaurants just fire the entrees when the app goes out but whatever. She came back a few minutes later with our drinks and took our dinner order. I got a pineapple mango agua fresca to drink, which was really good. After an average wait time our app of quesa birria came out. It consisted of 2 tacos and a small bowl of consommé for $16. (As a reference point, you can get 3 birria tacos for $13 at La Capital. Granted one is an old cab stand in Troy and the other is an upscale restaurant on Wolf Road.) Before I could even take my first bite, a second food runner came out with our chimichangas entree. I couldn't believe it. I almost told them to take it back to the kitchen. Our waitress came over and apologized but I feel like it probably wasn't her fault; more like a disorganized kitchen. I was kinda confused by the chimichanga because it was plated with a small salad which wasn't in the description at all. The menu listed all entrees as served with cilantro rice and black beans, which were not visible. As I cut into the chimichanga it was 90% rice and beans. Very disappointing for a $20 dish. At this point I thought we got someone else's order. We asked the waitress and she explained that for the chimichanga, the rice and beans are inside rather than on the side. They should really update the menu description to reflect that. If you care more about ambiance than authenticity you may enjoy it here but not even the service justifies the price in my opinion. read more

My mom and I had dinner here a couple of weeks ago. The food was great and everyone working there is very friendly. Genavieve was our server. We had her another time and she ensured we had such a great experience down to every detail. She is friendly, kind and gives outstanding customer service. She truly knows how to connect with people. Had lunch here the other day. The food was decent, we had the chicken tinga empanada and the taquitos as an appetizer. We ordered burrito bowls that were underwhelming (albeit gigantic) and the bill for three people came to a little over $145. This was two appetizers, three entrees, two margaritas (spicy marg is delicious). The worst part by far is the service, and this was no fault of the ONE PERSON that was working as a greeter, answering phones, being the only waiter. Throughout the entire lunch there was only one other party that was eating in the entire restaurant (of course with a screaming toddler lol). It begs the question: do people not eat here at lunch because the service is trash (especially relative to the prices) or is the restaurant grossly understaffed because people don't eat here at lunch. I've been here a few times now. Wonderful margaritas. La Reina is great, and I don't love tequila. They usually have some interesting monthly specialty cocktails and there's a lot of options if you are a mezcal fan. Classic guacamole and salsa sampler are worth a splurge. As for the menu, the fajitas are one of the better things. Nice sizzling plate and plenty of tortillas and toppings. Everything else is okay- tacos, corn crusted Chile rellenos, chicken tinga enchiladas are all meh. My biggest complaint about the food is the rice and beans. Overcooked and flavorless rice, refried beans taste like nothing, and the whole black beans don't do much either. I've also tried the fried plantain side and it wasn't memorable. The tres leches cake for dessert redeems the place though- I've gotten it every time and it's quite good if you're into sweets. TL;DR: margaritas, guacamole, fajitas, tres leches are great. There are any number of nice restaurants in the area who haven't lost their sense of why they exist to begin with, to create an excellent dining experience for their customers. Don't get back to me with some self righteous reason for your policy, because none of it is sustainable. Customers will vote with their wallets.
