Brought my diesel F350 for a transmission problem. I ended up getting a rebuilt transmission they built and put in. I asked for a Warranty on the transmission and never got one, just there word that they would fix it if any problems. 3 months later the new transmission has problems and I'm out $6k. Truck axel broke called around and they were one of the only shops in the area willing to look at my truck that day and see what it was gonna cost to repair.. Gave me a quote and also was able to locate another issue in my lift kit that caused my axel to break over time .. Gave me suggestions to help solve the issue and had my truck back on the black top a few hours later MAHALO Guys!! read more

This was the worst place to take my f350 diesel ! I had them do a head gasket job around a year ago and since then I have had nothing but problems with my truck they charged me 10k plus and it started hard after they worked on it . Now the head gasket is bad again . I have not towed anything with my truck, or barely have drove it . And the temp get very hot just driving it up a hill . They claimed that it was all good . I had asked them after they worked on my truck if they had drove it up any hill and they just told me it was good . I would not recommend this shop to any one . I have so much money ramped up in my truck do to the terrible job done by this shop and my truck is just sitting with the same problem it had before they touched it . read more

Its easy in the automotive world to get many negative reviews. Its harder for consumers to tell which shop to take their vehicle to because they all have negative reviews. Worst customer service ever, the gentleman who "helped" me was so arrogant and unhelpful, treated me like I was totally ignorant and said he found nothing wrong with my vehicle when he never really looked at it never put it up on a rack nothing. Can't say I'd trust their judgement in regards to vehicle issues or repairs. Place has gone downhill I used to use this shop alot, but will not be back ever and would never recommend it. If you want Westside mentality and arrogance this is by far the shop for you!!! Unprofessional, unhelpful, lack of knowledge, lack of customer service are the only thing ya get here. Glad I took my vehicle to a reputable certified shop that actually listened to me and is investigating the problem. You need to understand customer is always right no matter if they are wrong and they come first and knock the damn chip off ya shoulder. Listen.... I don't usually Yelp services. I don't know, maybe it's because I usually think of reviewing food rather than mechanical or other kinds of services. However, I just got back from Herb's where they installed a camshaft position sensor into my car. Here's the semi quick story: I have a 2003 Nissan Murano and it has been having issues with stalling and turning off WHILE I am driving. I have a neighbor with a code reader who told me what the error code was in my cars computer. I did some research on-line, and found that there was a recall on the camshaft position sensor for the 2003 Nissan muranos. I called the recall line, only to be told that my VIN "was not effected by the recall". I called Nissan to get a quote and they told me with the part and labor it would be 500.00. I looked on-line, purchased the sensor for 50.00 and looked around for somebody to install it. Now here's where Herb's comes in.... the lowest quote I actually got was from Pep Boys who quoted 54.00 to put it in. But I am at work in Auburn and wanted to get it done in Auburn instead of Puyallup, so I made a few other calls. I got to Herb's via google, and they quoted "around 63.00 plus tax. I figured I would suck up the $9.00 difference and try them out. I took my part in, and they installed my part in about 45 minutes. I went to pay and looked at my receipt to see what the damage was and was pleasantly surprised to see a 49.00 charge. They told me it didn't take as long as they expected when they quoted. I write this because it would have been very easy for them to charge me the quoted hourly rate since I had already gotten the service done and was all ready to pay. But since it did not take the full hour they did not charge me for the extra time quoted. This is a small amount of money but ultimately (especially with auto repair) will make the difference in my returning to them. It shows their ethical and moral compass and is a welcome change in the auto repair industry. read more

Herb did a ridiculous job repairing my 1996 Honda Civic. It was involved in a massive accident from a drunk driver, who totaled the back of the car. The bumper was ripped off and there was major frame damage. In two weeks, he had the frame straightened, the bumper and taillights repaired, paint redone, and cleaned the car for good measure. The price was right, too - but most importantly, the work was flawless. His shop is super clean as well, and the customer service is outstanding. Can't recommend it enough! read more

Unquestionably the worst experience I've ever had with an auto mechanic. I took a used vehicle in for a pre-buy inspection. Everything they told me that could be verified was completely inaccurate. Their ultimate recommendation was to do ~$2k in work with them. None of it was necessary. I ended up buying the vehicle and my mechanic found several things that did need to be done. None of them were found by the crew at Herbs, it was less than $500 in work with my mechanic and the truck has been great since then. In my experience, they were dishonest and borderline incompetent. My favorite part was being told that I needed to wait for the mechanic to finish up. I could see the vehicle from the waiting room and it was untouched for 30 minutes. Then the guy at the desk went back, closed the hood and presented me a bill that was 50% higher than we had agreed upon for the service. My visit was on a weekend and I honestly believe that there wasn't an actual mechanic involved. I think they took the truck back and put the hood up, waited 2.5 hours and then told me it was done. They then provided a list of generic problems that they had "found". Get another mechanic. read more

This is a very difficult review. I really like the owner, Herb, and think they usually do a great job at a fair price. I thought I had finally found a mechanic I could trust not to rip me off plus do the repairs right. And, for the first several times I took my cars in this was the case. That's why I can't in good conscience give them a lower rating than two stars. But then the one repair experience ruined most of the positive feelings I had about this shop. I was having a heater problem on my 2003 Chevy Tahoe. I called the dealer and was told there was often a mineral build up issue and they would try to clean it out for $70 but if that failed it would need to be replaced. I called Herb and he said they were right about the build up but that they knew the cleaning would just waist my money; these can't be cleaned. Herb also told me he had worked on someone's Chevy truck recently with the same problem. The conversation certainly led me to believe this would be a routine fix and something they had done many times before. I was in a bit of a hurry on the day I brought it in and they assured me it would be ready to go by 3pm. I did get a call telling me they were having some problems and they would need a few more hours. I said I would be by at their closing time, 6pm. When I arrived they were almost done (it was ready about 20 minutes after 6). Herb then explained that they had a major struggle getting the heater out. Apparently there was a hidden bolt that their repair books didn't show and finally after many calls to GM and other repair shops they found it. Immediately I recalled the conversation about him knowing all about these heaters - how could they not know this stuff already? He complained it took over twice as long because of this but he was only going to charge me $100 more than the quote. What?!? I have to pay for their ignorance? I was in a hurry and they were good guys so I didn't make a big issue of it and just paid the bill. Then, with keys in hand, I turn to go out the door Herb embarrassedly mentions, "Oh, we couldn't get the heater to work except when it is on auto." Unbelievable! They didn't even do it right? I was already heading out the door so I decided to check it out as I drove home. He was right; it didn't work unless the presets were on auto. But it did work. However, within a month it began to slowly get weaker and weaker until it was barely making any heat at all. I went to Herb's web site and complained twice. I wanted them to fix it right or refund my money so I could find a repair shop that would. This was months ago and he has never replied. I again lost faith in auto repair shops and he lost a customer for life. Lose-lose. read more

Not impressed at all. Took my 86 nissan in to get a diagnostic on why it was idling rough and stalling and they said it was fuel injectors. Got em pulled out and had em tested at dr injector and they said they were fine but needed to be cleaned. Truck still ran like dirt and i wasted $250 on a misdiagnosed mechanical problem. Took it to the dealership and they found the thermostat was opening too early throwing off the coolant sensor and affected the ecu control to the engine performance. They wrote on the report replace injector and retest. Didnt give me a detailed report on the diagnosis. I dont think they even looked into it at all. read more

I've used Herb's for years. All I can say is I have had good work at reasonable prices and on time...every time. I used to take my '96 Silverado in for repairs ( I never trust dealer repairs!). At least twice, Herb's fixed what the dealer or other repair show had done and ...it STAYED FIXED!. I recently took a friends truck in for an after purchase inspection for rust. Herb's report was instrumental in getting the dealer to change out the vehicle. They are a small shop. They don't have a lot of employees (overhead). But the work is top notch and the have never let me down in like, 18 years. Give em a try! read more

I've used Herb for my older Jeep for years, what most impresses me is his honesty and I love his prices. He has always been upfront about the repair costs as he understands at some point the costs will outweigh the benefit of keeping a paid-off car. One of the major repairs for my Jeep was on the AC system, when it first died several summers ago we were considering trading in the car and Herb helped us find a short term (inexpensive) solution so I had A/C for the summer. We later decided to not trade in the Jeep and Herb again told us we could do the short term solution or he provided the cost to fix it permanently which we did (it was expensive, but not as much as a car payment). I really like that Herb stands behind his work and those of his employees--when one of his employees made an error on my Jeep Herb ensured it was fixed with minimal disruption to me including offering to pick up my car at the train station while I was at work. I never thought I'd fully trust an automotive repair person, but Herb has made me change my mind as he treats every customer as if they were his first and he wants to make a great impression. read more

Don't bother going to see these guys. I dropped in and asked them if they could diagnose a front end squeak/noise. They pulled it onto the lift and just had a guy turn the steering wheel back and forth. They didn't even take the wheel off. Then they stood around and played with the shop dog for roughly 20 minutes before returning to the office to help me. After another 20 minutes they got around to giving me a quote for Tie rod ends (they said they were causing the noise...) and a pitman arm (slightly loose) for $740. WTF?? That job like $75 worth of parts and maybe 2-3 hours for a novice mechanic to complete even without a lift. He also charged me $65 for the diagnosis. I have a bad wrist so I didn't want to do the work myself but I bought the tie rod ends ($30) and installed them in my wet driveway in less than an hour. Unfortunately, the tie rod ends weren't the problem and it still made noise. It was the lower ball joint. So even the $65 diagnosis wrong and the fee was a waste of money. They are over quoting/charging on parts by a factor of 6x. $15 my cost verses $81 for an outer tie rod end. I'm recommending all of my Auburn Boeing people stay clear of this place. There are other options nearby that aren't such a rip off. read more

I have lived in the Auburn area since 1991 and have had experience with many of the local garages. Herb runs an honest shop. He has on two occasions fixed things on my vehicle for free, granted they were easy fixes but both required use of his lift. You wont find many garages that will put your car on a lift without a minimum charge. There are only two shops in Auburn I trust and Herbs is one of them. I understand that sometimes in car repairs things go wrong, I also know I am a pretty tough customer, what is important to me is that when these things do go wrong that the shop do there best to handle it, Herb does that. The most important thing to me is how honest the shop is, and Herb is definitley that. I recommend them and he is a great alternative for Mustang owners in the Auburn area. I took my husband's Hyundia Elantra in to get a price quote to fix a driver's side window that would not roll down. I had already had the problem diagnosed at another shop and was looking around for price quotes. I was told at Herb's that it would be around $465 for labor and parts (window motor and regulator). The $125 diagnosis fee would go away if we had it fixed there. So I made an appointment even though it was around the same price as the other shop. He called me a couple of hours after dropping the vehicle off to say that the parts were actually a different price than he had quoted me and that it would be $675. I decided to pay him the $125 diagnosis fee and take the car back to the other shop. They fixed it for $475 and also let us know that the door was not in the same shape as they had initially left it. Caps were missing to screws and pieces were broken inside the door. They said "whoever else looked at this did some damage." I would not ever trust the guys at Herb's to touch one of my cars again. Instead, I would highly recommend honest and fair work to be done at Car Smart Automotive in Sumner. I guess that's what I get for shopping around! read more

If you want to play the game of 100 questions with no answers this is the place to go. I went and took my car there to see what was wrong with it (because it wouldnt turn on) paid them 125+ to have them test it and figure it out. They said that all they had to do was jump start it which i find weird because i tried that before taking it there. Anyways they said that they jump started it let it run for a hour and so and it never died supposedly. They said that they "looked at it and everything was perfectly fine". So the next day i was driving my car. And it breaks down on me 2 miles away from herbs auto so i get it there and now all the sudden they are saying the fuel line is broke ( wondering why they couldnt find that out the day before it was broken, when they were suppose to check everything and they said it was good) they call around and find the part which cost $240 (which i looked up myself because they wouldn't tell me). However they are saying with labor it is going to cost me $800.00. Im thinking what the heck so i call another repair shop and tell them thr price and they think that they are completely crazy trying to charge me that amount . hope to never experience any place like this again ! read more

Unfortunately, I chose to take my car here and was assisted by the owner himself and it lead to a horrible experience. My car was overheating, after the diagnostic, the owner suggested a flush and reservoir tank. Ok, he did the work and I paid him. Still overheated, he suggested a thermometer. Ok, he did the work and I paid him. Finally, I picked the car up and there was oil all over my interior and a strange new clicking sound. Before I left the lot, I asked him about the sound and he responded that he never heard the noise and gave me a shoulder shrug and an "I already took your money and you can't do anything about it" face. Within 15 minutes of pulling out of the lot, guess what? The car overheated. I went back the next morning to chat with the owner and got the "I told you, I already took your money and there is nothing you can do about it" face, he seriously had no idea what to do or say and offered no solution other than putting the car back in his shop so he could take even more of my money. No thanks. I took my car elsewhere and refuse to ever give this shop another penny and will gladly steer business away from this shop. I had to rate one star, but I wish there was a negative star I could click! read more

my kid took her car here for an issue, it was covered by the used car lot warranty and they sent her here, she took it back a few times for the same problem. the last time it started acting up again down the street and she called them and and they said bring it back. she explained she had to pick her kids up from school and could not bring it back until next week. when she called back to make an apt they told her she would have to pay to diagnose the problem again. I told them it was the same problem and they told her to come back! we told the car lot and they sent her to another shop and they fixed it under warranty. I thought the guy was a little rude and wanting to charge to re-check the repair they just failed to correct sounds out of line. Following a failed emissions test for my 1990 Toyota PU (6 cyl 3L.) I went to Herb's Auto Repair for the necessary repairs. I had two options - repair it enough to pass and then pray everytime I drove it or approve the best repair and drive it another decade. Currently it has 368,200 +++ miles on it. I went for the best option since everything else is working just fine. It had to have 6 new injectors as the existing ones which were original to the vehicle and had only been cleaned and recalibrated one time had become unreliable. Factory original (not remanufactured) were installed along with other services, ie., change of oil, fuel filters, spark plug change. An emissions retest was passed with such good numbers I can drive the vehicle in California. OK. So what's the big deal? Is this shop better than anywhere else? It was realiably referred, everything was explained to my satisfaction (I asked alot of question) before and after repairs were done. As a female customer respect and cordiality go along way with me. Bottom line - once again I have a vehicle that is reliable and have discovered a shop with a staff of technicians who are trustworthy. read more

Took my wife's car her for emissions diagnostic. $160.00, which I was ok with - he lets me know what I need to repair it, I opt for the waiver, and go on my merry way. Car is running a bit funny, I head around the corner to the emissions station and they try to test it - but it won't start. Push it around the corner, I walk back over to Herb's to see if they have any insight or maybe someone to help me out. I wait for five minutes, ring the bell and nobody comes - on my way out, some guy glances over, and says "Hey. Do you need something?" Uhhh, yeah. That's why I'm here. I let him know what happened and he sighs, and says "He will be over there in a couple minutes. I think he's in the bathroom." So I go back over and wait, about 20 minutes later someone walks over, messes with a couple things, still no dice. He tells me I'm not getting any spark, I need a new distributor. I tell him no, I just replaced it two months ago. He is adamant my distributor is old and needs replaced. I thank him for his valuable assistance and send him on his way. Car still won't start, so I pop the hood... three spark plug wires not put all the way back in, distributor cap halfway off. Even after I got them all back in place it still wouldn't start. Had to get it towed because they couldn't put my car back together right. $350 all said and done.... never again. read more

My son's car broke down last week, we had it towed to Herb's for a diagnoses. They ran there tests and told us we needed a fuel pump, which would cost $942.00. The diagnoses cost $127.00. We decided to take to another shop, we had to get the car towed. That cost another $135.00. When the car got to the new shop, they told us within 5-minutes that the fuel level sending unit was out and that the car was bone dry of gas. So, basically we just payed a bunch of money for a gallon of gas. Herb, said oh well, sorry with the price of gas we can't put gas in all cars to see if it is out of gas. He said, our son should have known he was out of gas. Well if the gage was not working he would not have known. I think if you pay for a diagnoses you should get one that is accurate. And, if they had people that were smart enough, they may have been able to figure this out. I would not recommend anyone take their car to this shop. They are not honest or very smart. read more

Herb is a wolf in sheep's clothing. I thought he was really nice and honest at first but I was fooled. Yesterday my 16 year old daughter took her car in to Herb's to see if he could tune it to pass emissions. I got a bill for $157 bill that stated, "CATALYTIC CONVERTER IS BAD AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED." My daughter then went to Emissions to get a waiver since she spent the required $150 but she was told the car could not be tested BECAUSE THERE IS NO CATALYTIC CONVERTER ON THE CAR!!! I called Herb to ask what is going on and he said they sent my daughter to try and get through emissions hoping the emissions folks would not notice there is no catalytic converter. Of course they noticed immediately and my daughter was not allowed to emissions test. Herb refuses to refund my money and started yelling at me on the phone and hung up on me. He told me its my fault because I should have looked under the car and seen that there was no catalytic converter. Now I am out $157 and got nothing for it. Not even able to test at emmisions. Herb should have given my daughter an estimate to put on a new catalytic converter instead of playing these FRAUD games. Herb is a con man. I am pursuing legal action, and calling another shop to install a catalytic converter. read more
