If I could give a business A MILLION STARS, it would be Winston Auto. Hands down. I previously posted about another mechanic who I THOUGHT was being honest and helpful but they were the farthesttt thing from. I digress. I brought my car here per my dad's recommendation as him and my sister get all their work done here. I got my car towed from my house to their shop and they were in constant communication with me, letting me know when my car got there to updates along the way. I spoke with Davey and he asked me to describe what the other shop told me was the issue and he insisted that wasn't the case and said he needed more time. He ended up calling me promptly to let me know he had diagnosed the problem and that it was GOOD NEWS. The first spot I brought my car to diagnosed a shot engine and that it would cost me $6,200 for labor and parts to fix my car. Davey and Jon at Winston diagnosed it CORRECTLY with a broken heater core and hose which after parts and labor was only an $850 FIX! Definitely not cheap and not fun to pay for, but MUCH different than $6.2k!!! I picked my car up from Davey yesterday and he was so stoked that he was able to save me the headache and MONEY that I thought I needed to fork out (or figure out if I just needed a new car). The nicest guy and TRUSTWORTHY which is huge when it comes to mechanics. Seriously can not sing their praises ENOUGH and I will be coming back here for ANY vehicle repairs from now on. P.S. I took my car into Walker Subaru to have an oil change and they recommended I do my spark plugs too. I agreed since I bought the car in April. When they completed those tasks they recommended I have $10000 in repairs because my head gasket was going bad. I took it to Davey at Winston auto Repair and he did a 2 hour inspection. He said, first of all, you only have 70K on that head gasket. Second of all, your car wasn't overheating or blowing smoke. He found nothing wrong. I brought my car in for a small mechanical issue where the truck wasn't opening. They were able to fit me in the next day. When I arrived they were super friendly and told me it would take a few hours. I wasn't sure that would be the case, but sure enough within an hour they had it sorted out. They told me what they did to fix it, what I may need in the long run, and even gave me an estimate on future work if needed. Then told me there was no charge because the job took only a few minutes to figure out on their end. (BTW - Honda said to even look at this issue would cost $185 and they'd need to book a special technician because it could be "anything".) I appreciate their honesty, generosity, and demeanor. Most recently we went there for an oil change...I used to go to Grease Monkey- Winston's charged me 1/2 the price, didn't try to upsell me on all the crap, and they were super fast. My son and I have used Winston's for several years. A water pump here, oil changes, alternator there.. Unfortunately, in the past year I've had nothing but bad luck with them. First, I had my alternator replaced last summer. Got it done quick! Driving, and my car dies. Tow it back to Winston's, they tell me they installed a dud alternator. Okay, stuff happens. Take it in to have the brakes looked at a few months back. Tell the man I'm hearing a grinding, metal on metal occasionally. That my car did a herky jerky thing as I was stopping. Guy tells me I'm probably just hearing the brake pads squeal. I tell him I'm sure that's not what I heard, as them to drive it, it doesn't grind, go on my way. Starts grinding again, take it back, insist I'm hearing brake pad squell. Now it starts really grinding. Take it back. They say a caliper got stuck, now I need new rotors. I ask them to discount, because I brought it to them twice and was dismissed. I feel I wouldn't have needed rotors. They agree to discount, I get the job done there. Flash forward a little bit to this weekend. Driving with my child in the car and something falls off the front wheel. Hear it bang around in the wheel well before falling out. Now, when I brake the grinding is back bad and my wheel feels strange - loose kind of? Take it back. Can't use my car all weekend, have to get a rental car and pay for two Lyfts. They say "that brake pad was a little funny, so we just replaced it." I don't think so. Something loudly fell off my wheel while driving. No sorry, no offer for an oil change or something to offset the costs due to their repair failing. Once, I get that. Things happen. But this incident - especially since I took it there 4 total times, felt dismissed but trusted them, and drove my kid around in a car with brake parts falling off - I can't understand what went wrong. And I can't say I'd trust my car there any more. read more

My Dad grew up working on cars since he was 11 and worked on them his entire life. He started taking his cars to Davey when he was in his late 60's or so and passed but Davey was his trusted mechanic. I never learned my dads knowledge of cars but I did learn how great Davey and Winston Auto are. Davey has worked on all of my vehicles and families vehicles for many years and they are honest, hardworking and have integrity. You will always be treated fairly and honestly. Okay, my friend referred me to this shop and my first thought was damn the shop is too far. But I decided to try it anyway and I'm glad I did. He fixed the driverside manifold of my lx470 and gave me $200.00 off the bill. A few months later my ignition broke and again he beat other quotes by $150.00. My last visit my front axle broke and he gave me another discount since I'm a returning customer. All work is guaranteed for a year, maybe 14 months. I'm happy with his work and professionalism. Tried to scam us. Instead of evaluating the vehicle they took the easy route and blamed it on the battery saying it's probably old.... it was brand new and they were going to charge us, change it, and not fix the problem. Either knowingly scamming us, or terrible mechanics. When we went to get our car, they were still not done, actually never started, and wanted to make us wait another hour while they ate lunch... we just wanted our keys before they could lie anymore. I am a fan of Davey and Winston's Auto Repair. I got an oil change done at Grease Monkey in Federal Way and those jokers didnt secure my oil filter. Long story short, it fell off while I was on the highway and I had my car towed to Winston's. Davey was personable, straight up and came off as an all around good guy. He got my car on the lift, took pictures of the oil filter area, checked my engine and told me that it was shot. My insurance company ended up totaling out my vehicle but if they were gonna repair it, I absolutely would've had Davey and the crew take care of the work. read more

Moved to Des Moines from Bend OR two years ago and have been using Winston's for repairs on our vehicles for about six mo now. Will certainly not be looking to find anywhere else for automotive work as long as we're living here in the area. Took wife's 2005 Toyota Rav4 in last Sept for a burned out alternator. Remanufactured alternator and labor came in approx. $250.00 less than quote sheet provided by the local Toyota dealer (also remanufactured), and about $450.00 under what they quoted us for an OEM replacement. Winston's hourly labor charges are very reasonably priced and, depending on the nature of the problem, they may even provide a free diagnostics for initial troubleshooting. Incredible! Had an electrical/charging issue with my 2011 GMC Sierra last week and when I called Winston's, Davey suggested stopping by on my way home from work by for a quick look. He connected his analyzer to my charging system and ran a couple of quick tests (for free), determining what was NOT the problem. He had me bring it back in for an appt the following day and for the cost of a $24.00 faulty electrical connector and only 1-hr labor, the damage came to just over a C-Note. Amazing! Have a conversation with Davey when dropping off or picking up your car, and you'll understand why Winston's is rated as highly as it is. You simply will not find this level of customer service, integrity, or honesty when it comes to auto troubleshooting and repairs anywhere else! read more

If you are looking for a honest Mechanic and great team, Kite, the manager and his team at Winston 99 on Pac Hwy is the best. I've had some automotive repair done on a 2003 minivan, Grand Caravan, only cost around $140 dollars and he showed me the parts, since its a secondary car of mine, he shared with me ways to "baby" it and didn't pressure to do more on the car. They place the protective paper sheets on the floor even if it's just an old minivan. When I brought in my Jaguar Vandenplas, I was afraid they wouldn't touch it, as most tell you to just take it to a dealer. Kite looked at it himself and did some work on some blown out hoses and modified somethings as only a true professional, experienced mechanic would do. The prices they charge are so reasonable and no pressure. For my experience both times I was able to leave my car there a day or so, so there wasn't as much pressure for timewise for them to get it done. I felt they gave the fairest of terms based on my patience of being able to keep my car there, which they didn't really have to do. We all know you feel like you are at the mercy of the mechanic when you are there. You can leave all that pressure and stress away and know it will be done and the bill won't blow you away. He checked on my brakes on both vehicles and said I didn't need new ones, which of course he could have said anything. HONEST! MECHANIC! No haggling and no male macho prides to deal with here. Ladies I highly recommend this place. They were friendly and informative. I cannot begin to tell you how much I am in love with this shop! As a woman (granted my dad and grandpa did a damn good job teaching me about cars), I can walk in here and get greeted the same way a macho car-man would. Whether it be Dave or Tracy that you talk to, you will get superior customer service, extremely detailed reports with price breakdowns, and excellent workmanship. You drop your car off, leave them your keys and they call you WHEN THEY SAY THEY WILL (bonus!) to discuss everything they've found. They give you parts prices (to the penny!) and labor costs. They will never go above their estimates, throw in extra garbage, or do anything without your consent. They will tell you things that should be done immediately, and will notate your account with things that are/should be on the horizon to fix. They even look for ways to save you money on labor by checking other similar items, or items that need to be maintained that could be part of the same job as to not have you come back in for the regular maintenance and be charged again for labor - (which saved me nearly $100 just today!) Also, if you call around for pricing, and find a better price, call them back and they will do the best they can to work with you. In addition to that, if something they fix isn't quite right, bring it back and they fix it for free - no questions asked. AND, in December, they give FREE oil changes for Christmas. Seriously, hands down...these guys are it. I don't know that I'd ever take my vehicles anywhere else...even if I moved an hour away! read more

Then I took my car to Winston's, just a few blocks from my house, I used to drive by it all the time thinking man that tiny auto shop lot is always full. Now I understand why. On my first service, I needed my oil changed and asked Davey about my timing belt making a weird noise - oil was changed and charged, and the time belt was adjusted so the noise stopped - for no extra cost!
