Visited HAE on our trip to Van City after seeing that it was highly rated on Yelp, and the location was close to our hotel. We ordered the five spice chicken wings to start and a chicken bowl and pork belly bowl. You order at the front counter and they call your receipt number when your food is ready. We had been walking/being touristy all day so we had worked up quite an appetite. Once our food arrived, we all tucked in. I enjoyed the ginger topping on my chicken bowl (appeared to be mashed fresh ginger with herbs) as it added a fresh bite to the rice, shredded cabbage salad, wood ear mushrooms, and soft boiled egg. The fried chicken exterior had a nice crisp, and as I was taking pieces off to give to my young son, I noticed the inside of my chicken leg was red. I tore the piece deeper and to my horror the inside was RAW with blood running in the center. Now at this point I had taken bites off of the chicken and given pieces to my son. I was afraid we were going to get food poisoning from the poorly cooked chicken, and I don't know about you, but I def do not want to get sick while on vacation! I brought the bowl up and showed the cashier who then asked who I presume was the manager to take a look. He saw the uncooked leg and apologized and asked if I wanted to wait while they made me another bowl. I was honestly so grossed out at that point that I said no, I would just like a refund. So at first they gave me cash, but I requested the money be put back on the credit card I had used to pay as we were returning to the U.S. and I didn't want to have Canadian money left over. No one seemed to know how to do a credit refund. But after a couple mins the manager figured it out and it worked. He did also hand me their bus card and said that if for some reason the refund didn't go through, to call back and they would fix it. I was still starving and thankfully the wings were fully cooked. What a disappointment though. As for the parts of the chicken bowl I did taste - good, not great. The wood ear mushrooms were overcooked and were mushy, the rice with the deep fried taro (?) strips was decent, and as I said before, I enjoyed the fresh ginger mash topping. The five spice wings were ok, but nothing to write home about. My sister thought her pork belly bowl was just ok as well - the belly was super soft, but there was nothing overly impressive with the dish. If I were ever back in the area, I don't think I would visit again. Let this serve as a reminder to ALWAYS CHECK THAT YOUR POULTRY IS THOROUGHLY COOKED BEFORE EATING! read more

Heritage Asian Eatery is a modern, casual Asian spot about a 5-min walk from Canada Place. I strolled into here on a weekday for lunch and got the Chicken Rice Bowl ($11). The bowl came with two pieces of fried chicken, which weren't crispy or juicy (they were actually on the dry side). Also included in the bowl were mushrooms, cabbage, onions, and two eggs. Overall, it wasn't very memorable and everything was just "okay." In fact, I would say more than 60% of the bowl was plain white rice (and there was no brown rice option...). Granted, the interior of the restaurant was neat/modern, and the ordering experience was easy (order at the counter and seat yourself). But the food was pretty bland and uneventful. Disappointing considering I had high-hopes for this place! If you are looking for an affordable, decent lunch, this place will get the job done -- but there are better options. read more

I kept getting insta ads for this place and every picture looked drool worthy so I was dying to try this place out. My expectations fell very flat. Navigating the entrance to Heritage on Pender took a great deal of effort because the city of Vancouver closes sidewalks when construction takes place. As tourists, we were compelled to cross streets 2 or 3 times just to get to the restaurant. If we were in a rush, that would double our time to get there. However, we found the entrance on the west side of the street and were greeted kindly by the effervescent Amy who was an excellent server. We chose an array of food, enjoying almost everything. The Truffle Prawn Dumplings and the BBQ Duck were excellent, but the Spicy Tofu won first prize. It was delicious. The flavor bomb dumplings needed more flavor, and they were a fizzle, rather than a bomb. Heritage Asian Eatery has some fantastic dishes, and some mediocre dishes. If we were regular diners, we would know what we like, and we could have a fantastic meal. However, as first timers, it was hit and miss. I remembered a time when the Chicken Rice Bowl had a perfectly fried chicken thigh that was crispy on the outside and moist in the inside that was cleverly paired with ginger scallion sauce. For those that like a little heat, their homemade hot sauce was the perfect complement to a meal - adding that hint of spiciness. This time around, the chicken was dry, hot sauce was not as good. Good lunch! Came right after lunch rush around 1pm. Wasn't as busy got our food right away. We ordered wings $5, I had chicken bowl $11, and my husband had the pork belly bowl $12. I really enjoyed the wings very tasty. I also tasted my husbands food and I enjoyed a little better than mine. Don't you just hate that when you partner food taste better than yours. I found the pork belly bowl in general just had more flavour. Ok so the chicken bowl, it was ok. Came with 2 piece of chicken (thigh & drum stick) egg, rice, mushroom and slaw. As a whole it was pretty bland, I had to add hot sauce to give it more flavour. Good portions. So if you want to try something and its your first time go with the Pork belly! We're spoilt for choice when it comes to good Asian food in Canada, so I have come to expect a high standard from restaurants that specialize in it. For the items that I tried, HAE is sub-par, I have eating fresher more flavorful baos in small Albertan towns. Since I had never eaten here before, I orders the staple reliable foods: Pork belly bao, duck bao and crispy dumplings. 1. Crispy Dumplings (3/5) First, the good - the dumplings were crispy and quite flavourful. But unfortunately they were small and only 6 of them in one serving, which to me does not warrant the price tag. 2. Baos (0/5) Absolutely terrible, the baos were room temperature. There is no way that these were prepared to order or heated up properly before serving. The only item which possibly had some warmth to it was the pork belly. The duck bao is supposed to have 'duck leg in pecking sauce' but there was nothing in that bun expect meat that looked like dry shredded cardboard, unfortunately it tasted like cold cardboard too. We refused to eat it after one bite. For $10, I could have fed myself something decent instead. 3. Ginger soda (3/5) I am not sure if they make their own but this came in a glass and had a nice bitter ginger flavour and was very fizzy. Not bad at all. The positives are that the front staff was nice and the place is cute. The pork belly rice bowl was excellent! The soft-boiled egg done well (not well done). Generous portion of tender delicious pork belly. The rice had a good texture, and didn't feel like there was too much or too little of it. Also had a mix of toppings: watercress, yuzu slaw, crispy onions and kimchi daikon. Tons of flavours that blend well together You order at the counter and they'll call your name out when it's ready. You can also do a mobile order, and go straight to the counter to pick it up. I arrived late in the lunch hour rush (1245) and my meal was ready to go in less than 5 minutes. That said, most places downtown get slammed around noon. There are 2 rows of tables and a bar along one side. Total seating is in the 30-40 range. I'll definitely be returning to try the duck rice bowl and some bao. read more

Walked by this place a couple times before, and decided to stop in one evening last week after work to give it a try. The interior decor gives off serious hipster vibes, with a long communal table right down the middle, a high ceiling, and rustic furnishings. My friend & I ordered a rice bowl each: I had the Pork Belly while he had the Chicken. The bowls had a decent amount of meat, a bunch of veggies/slaw, and a marinated boiled egg each. Both bowls had flavourful sauces and a very fusion-y non-standard Asian rice bowl kind of taste. Nothing particularly outstanding, but definitely not bad either. The included egg is often my favorite at Asian spots, and this on was one of the best. Serve yourself water is a nice touch that's often overlooked elsewhere. Super friendly staff but as an Asian eatery was surprised to see only Caucasian work in the front and back. Ever since they did a collab with one of my favourite bakery, I've wanted to come try this place or the other location. I'd say not as amazing as the hype made it sound but it is really good. The Dan Dan noodle was delicious. The char siu pork belly is a bit salty without rice but it is very well made and super flavourful. I personally would recommend just eating it on its own, but it's a must try dish for sure. The crispy wontons are also a MUST TRY! The truffle siu mai is good but not any different from other decent Chinese place. The only thing that I'd say I was disappointed about is the XLB. Not as flavourful as I imagined and not the most authentic. However, that's the only dish I'd say that's not worth ordering. The rest are great and if I'm around I'd come back again. I keep walking by this place and seeing others trying it so I finally decided to go in. I ordered the duck rice bowl. It comes with yellow meadows duck leg in Peking sauce. roasted duck breast, watercress and slow cooked marinated egg. It's really flavorful and the sauce is not overpowering. I like that they have sauce all over the rice and not just one little spot. The breast is tender and juicy, with enough sauce and seasoning to compliment the meat. The pulled duck leg meat isn't dry. The rice bowls are a little expensive for what you get but seeing that it's downtown, I can understand. I will have to come back for the baos. read more

All reviews were pretty good about what to order and we did even though we went overboard. My on ordered the Salmon bowl. Not sure what happened but the texture was like mashed potatoes. I could not sit there and let my son leave it, so I expressed our dismay. With a little coaxing, I explained it was Awful. They took it back and said they would refund the difference. They did not. Not impressed they forgot. Dumplings were high sodium, and we tried everything that was recommended. Cauliflower was tasy, high salt, dumplings ok too. Nice little spot to try. We ordered a pork belly and duck bao, both of which were tasty. We also ordered the chicken wing with the Chinese 5 spice, and they were so crisp, but had a sweet, salty kick to it. I'm not sure what the breading consisted of, but they were cooked to perfection. Stopped by here for a quick lunch and was pleasantly surprised. The long line went really quickly and is cafeteria style which I like. Highlights: -Mushroom Bao- COOKED PERFECTLY, crunchy onions and good sauce. Came here the other day with a friend after work since it was close by. My friend got the Pork Belly bowl which is apparently their best seller and I got the Eggplant bowl. We shared a plate of fried dumplings. Atmosphere is nice and place itself is cute and cozy. Service was quick and efficient and we got our food in less than 5 minutes. My eggplant bowl came with 2 eggs, cabbage, spicy eggplant on a bed of rice for $12. Overall taste was okay but I felt that there was way too much rice for my preference (it was probably equivalent to two bowls of rice). You get a pretty large portion so you get your money's worth for sure! Fried dumplings tasted ok. Not sure if I'd come back here again but it was a pleasant experience nonetheless. The food here is phenomenal. One of my favourite places for lunch. The portions are very filling and there is enough of each flavor to balance the bowl well. The egg is incredible. Walked by this restaurant today and my friend wanted to try it because she was hungry. We ordered a few snack items and they were all really good. I tried the matcha mantau. A mantau is basically a deep fried bun that you dip into matcha condensed milk. Pretty good. Also tried the XLBs and they were good too. My friend ordered the bao and enjoyed it. It's a small spot and it is hard to get a table during the lunch rush. If you have ritual you can order on ritual. Took advantage of an app offer of takeout for a serve of the "Dan Dan noodles" for $1. Walked into a busy, cosy, canteen style space. I don't think service is a priority here, maybe it's because I got takeout on an offer - so they don't need my business. The Dan Dan noodles were.. they used what seemed like packet udon noodles for one, the mince sauce was imho pretty lacklustre and didn't have the flavour punch you'd usually get from Sichuan Dan Dan noodles. The sliced cucumber garnish helped give it a bit of balance, with the contrast in texture. Overall it was okay, not something I'd order again - $12 feels like too much to pay for a small bowl of boiled (maybe packet?) udon, topped with a mince sauce and a bit of garnish. Glad there was the $1 offer which prompted me to try this place, but I don't see myself returning. read more

Generous portions at a good value. We tried the following (from best to least enjoyed): 1. Cauliflower ($5) - AMAZING. I need to start making a list of the city's best cauliflower, this one would be near the top of the list. You get a HEAP load of cauliflower for $5. This was almost a meal in itself. 2. XLB Dumplings ($7) - There's a bit of a wait time for these to be steamed but it's well worth the wait. Juicy and thin-skinned. My only complaint is that the skin of the dumpling stuck to the bottom paper which caused some of them to rip. 3. Pork Belly Rice Bowl ($13) - Fatty portions of soft pork (melt in your mouth) with some fresh ingredients tossed in made this delicious and (somewhat) light. 4. DanDan Noodles ($12) - I was most excited to try this dish but ended up being disappointed as it was a bit too peanut-buttery for my liking. We did not anticipate the big portions for each order so we ended up packing up a lot of leftovers to take home. The guy at the front even asked us if there was going to be another person joining us. HA, no, we're just two gluttons. It's an eatery so you order at the front, find seating and wait for your name to be called. The self-serving water, cutlery, napkins, sauces and leftover take out boxes are handy and efficient. That doesn't mean that we didn't experience some great service while we're there though. Checked out Heritage Asian Eatery for the first time with my gf to catch up. She wanted to check out this place because of their IG pics. Beautiful posts on Instagram, but the food does not live up to its picture. It could be because we came at a busy time (lunch rush) and the kitchen was busy. Regardless, here's an honest review: Cute interior design, lovely food placement and decent service. Food was okay. I ordered the eggplant bowl, my bowl was very bland. However, I will give the egg 4/5. I think what they need to work on is adding more flavours to the dishes. Besides that, I think it's a cute spot to check out. I can see why it's popular for its aesthetics. However, I don't think I will go out of my way to eat here again. If I'm in the area and it's not busy, I'll give it another chance. read more

3.5 stars! Great place for a quick Asian fix for lunch, dinner or a snack! The menu is simple, with rice bowls as mains and options for add-ins and appetizers. We ordered a pork belly rice bowl and the special duck wings to share. It's self serve and the food arrives fairly quickly. So if you are tight on time, this is a great option to chow down. I especially love the duck wings, paired with chili oil on the self serve condiments area. The skin was very crispy and the meat was juicy!!!! Highly recommend. The rice bowls were decent. Pork belly was fatty as expected and tender. However, I personally thought the side veggies in the bowl could be improve in flavour. There was nothing special to the rice either - a flair of buttered rice would most definitely elevate the dish, and also my cholesterol level. Quite disappointed as their dishes look pretty tasty and found it more expensive than what it was worth. There really wasn't anything that struck me as amazing which makes me sad because I thought I would love this place. Let's get real people. The food here is okay at best. We came here actually for the Matcha Mantos, which the cashier told us were "sold out because they did not have the ingredients to make it". At 11AM, really? Ordered the limited-time only sea urchin ramen. When it arrived, we were in shock at the tiny miso-soup bowl sized ramen with small random pieces of sea urchin thrown on and bottom-of-the-bag bonito flakes to cover. See picture. I thought it had to be a mistake so I asked the cashier if this was the $15 ramen. She said "Yes! Sea urchin is very expensive!" Immediately after they served it to us, the ramen was taken off the fresh sheet. Oh I see, we had gotten the last portion. And no, the ramen was nothing special either - bland and fishy. $15!!! Sous-vide Salmon: texture of soggy public washroom toilet paper, disintegrates in your mouth quite unpleasantly, also tasteless and unmarinated. Just when we thought things couldn't get any worse, we saw a friend's instagram story of the mantos two hours later. For a place that makes you pick up your own food and clean up after yourself, such audacity to default your visa machine to 15% gratuity. All those who said good service, taking an order is considered service? If so, McDonald's curbside deserves 20% all day long. Came here for lunch once, coming again after 12noon for a quick lunch, the place was packed! Last time I had a very delicious salmon rice bowl right before the lunch rush, so it was done right. The salmon was light cooked so the inside is still raw and soft, absolutely one of the best cooked salmon I had in the past few years! This time, I hit the lunch rush, it was loud and feel the rush going in the kitchen. I ordered the pork belly rice bowl added a deep fried chicken cod seeing my friend had the chicken with lot of green onion ginger topping that I love! The turn down... 1) pork belly is skin on but so does HAIR! I had to plug some piggie hair off my pork belly... it was pretty unpleasant... 2) when I poke the fried bone in chicken thing with a chopstick to release heat, red blood juice came out, so I tear the chicken apart. Just as suspected, the meat closer to bone is still bright pink, not fully cooked, the meat is still attach to the bone, so definitely not fully cooked yet. Upside: Staff was very concern and understanding, willing to refund or to make a new one. I just took the refund and dash back to work. This place doesn't look impressive from the outside (or really on the inside too) but this food was delicious! I was at a nearby hotel and needed something other than conference food to hit the spot. I ordered a bun and a chicken rice bowl. The bun was fairly standard in a good way. But the bowl shined. I loved the soft-boiled ramen-style egg. And plenty of meat and vegetables. The meat was particularly tasty. It came fairly quickly too. And for the price, it was a great find! read more
