This is a hidden gem to me, despite being on a busy street in the downtown core! I visited with a couple friends on a Sunday afternoon, craving Vietnamese coffee to recharge me after hours spent shopping. It really hit the spot! Not too sweet, didn't have too much ice, and bold, strong coffee. I was also a little hungry, so I got some prawn brochette (skewers) off the appetizer menu. They were sweet, succulent, and I could taste the flavour from the grill. And the dipping sauce had a bit of kick to it! Meanwhile, the side salad of lettuce, tomato, and pickled daikon and carrot was refreshing as expected. My friends got bánh bột lọc (tapioca dumplings) and bánh mì respectively, which they said were good. We were all pleasantly surprised at the prices, given the location. Service was courteous and the restaurant was very clean. There was a moment, when we were one of 2 or 3 tables dining in, where a staff member (maybe even the owner?) was singing softly while tending to the plants, which I found very endearing. The ordering system here is not the most organized. We saw people order at the counter, but the owner told us we can order at our table. Tons of people walked in after we sat down and ordered. We finally waved down the owner to take our order after sitting for 15 minutes. My partner's vermicelli came, he ate, finished eating, and my hot and sour soup and veggie stir fry was nowhere in sight. We waited another 10 minutes, and they delivered my soup noodle to the wrong table. When I finally got my food, my partner just watched me eat, which was no fun. The hot and sour soup tasted more like sweet and sour. It didn't taste good at all. I did enjoy the tofu and vegetable stir fry with onion and ginger sauce. It's been a while Joyeaux...but happy to be savouring a shrimp salad roll along with Jasmine tea and calamari apple. Still a quirky menu with lots to satisfy every appetite. The shrimp roll is plump with two shrimp each and crisp veg. Peanut sauce for dipping has a slight tang, pleasant texture. The calamari are from a robust creature- three inches across- very tender with a light crunch. Nice refreshing fresh tomato and cucumber, pickled daikon and carrot round out the plate. A nice afternoon lunch on a warm day. Will return for the brisket on a rainy day. Located on Howe street, across from Holt Renfrew Men. Casual ambience with black wood tables and chairs. I stopped in for lunch on a Wednesday around 12:30, and the place was packed -- I got the last table for 2. They have a fairly large vegetarian section of the menu, including two veggie broth-based noodle soups. I ordered their Vegetable & Tofu Noodle soup ($14.75 plus tax; they also have a hot & sour noodle soup). Their menu said $13.75, which I was told after was "an old menu" -- not cool. Despite how busy the place was, my soup came out in under 10 minutes. The soup came with plenty of veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, green cabbage, and carrot), soft tofu, veggie fish (?) balls, and slightly over-cooked thin rice noodles. The broth was gentle, moderately salted but on the blander side. It's amped up nicely with their chili oil though. On the whole, it's a solid but middle-of-the-road veggie pho. Service was fast and competent, but I don't appreciate being charged more than what's stated on the menu -- that leaves a sour taste in the mouth. Gotta warn all my Asians out there, but it is so obvious that they cater to the non asians. The pho that they claim to have "everything" aka "pho dac biet" was beef and meatballs and yes I even asked what it came with and he said everything. Then I had to ask for seasoning. I asked for fish sauce and sugar, and he looked irritated. He brought me the sauce that you eat with eggroll. I can understand if I had said fish sauce with sugar but that was not what I asked for. The last things I had to ask for was lime, basil, and bean sprouts. Ppl who eat pho know this is a staple. You can't eat pho without at least lime and bean sprouts. Pleasantly surprised by the taste and quality of the food here. Owners were really friendly and kind too! But more of a 3.5/5 rather than a full 4. I was hungry so I got myself the spring rolls, a grilled sub filled with various meats, Vietnamese pancake, and chow mein with chicken. My favorite part of the meal was definitely the spring rolls. They were fried perfectly and melted in my mouth. I enjoyed the grilled sub but I felt the bread was a little excessive compared to the amount of meat stuffing inside. But whatever the dipping sauce is they give you with the spring rolls and pancake, it tastes incredible!! I definitely dipped every bite of my sub in that stuff. This was my first time eating a Vietnamese pancake and it was alright. The first few bites tastes exactly like eating the crispy skin of a chicken leg or something similar. It was good but as I continued eating, it just had too much noodles for taste and not enough of the meats which left me a little disappointed. The chow mein tasted great. Fresh chicken, freshly steamed veggies and noodles cooked just right. The downside to this dish though was the small amount of chicken and veggies compared to the large amount of noodles. Even if they only added 4 more pieces of chicken, I feel like the chow mein dish would of been more of a complete meal rather than feeling like a plate full of noodles with some veggies and some chicken pieces on top. Sort of a hit and miss on the entrees but you can't deny the quality and freshness of the food served here. With owners who are easy going to talk with and plenty of choices to pick from, I'd say it's worth stopping in. When I was downtown all the time I would eat here but it was always so busy! Was fairly quiet when I went and ordered some takeout. Salad rolls and papaya salad and some sort of other salad. Portions are fairly generous and the food was all made to order. The papaya salad was almost entirely papaya and missed having long beans and tomatoes but good flavour and dressing done on the side. Rolls were fresh, mostly rice noodles, I like cucumber and sprouts and carrot and Thai basil etc in mine. Sauce was decent but I prefer my homemade sauce and my homemade peanut sauce. Downtown does not have a lot of Vietnamese restaurants. This one is considered a good one with reasonable pricing, good quality and many options. We love it. We ordered a bowl of spicy rice noodles and lemon grass chicken with vermicelli and a spring roll. Both dishes were great. The rice noodles were the round thick ones that we loved the firmness and texture of it. Only one critic about the spring roll from the vermicelli dish was that the size was small and there were only 3 pieces. The ambiance was okay. Space was quite big in the restaurant comparing to others. Customer service was average. It seems one of the servers didn't quite understand English or English as their second language. We had to repeat our orders and made sure she got it. Overall we had a great experience eating Vietnamese food in downtown. In town for work and was looking for somewhere close to my hotel for takeout. Really impressed and pleasantly surprised ! Can't speak for service at peak hours but around 8 pm was not busy at all, happy to have waited for my food and not be served immediately, a sign that the food is made to order. Portions are massive and generous! I got two cold rolls, an order of spring rolls, and the lemongrass chicken on vermicelli/bun and the portions are at least twice the size, if not more, than what I'm used to getting in Toronto. Was not expecting the quantity and quality for the price! Will have leftovers for tomorrow's lunch AND dinner. The restaurant was very clean both in front of and behind the counter. So came here for lunch with colleagues and I got a vermicelli beef and shredded pork. For some reason the vermicelli looks like giant noodles. Not what I expected. Meat is on the skimpy side. It is a bit more expensive than other Vietnamese restaurants because it is located in a prime location. So first thing is when you walk into the restaurant, you have to order your meal right away. Next is you have to go find a seat. Well if you want to beat the rush then come here before noon. Today, I had lunch at 11am and there are hardly anyone here. Overall, the food was decent. Not wow. My vermicelli beef came to $11.29 after tax. I think they overcharged me but I didn't say anything because its probably like less than $1. read more

I'm alway looking for a good pho spot Downtown, as pho is usually my go-to lunch takeout on weekdays. With a recent change to office buildings, I have spent last couple weeks trying out different pho places nearby and have concluded that Joyeaux reigns supreme in my new work neighborhood. I have gone at least 5 times in the past month. I ever get the special beef pho went to go to Joyeaux, so I can't really comment on their other dishes. This restaurant does have some western influences, so the menu is a mix of typical Vietnamese dishes and things like deep fried fish fillet/calamari with fries etc. I highly recommend trying something with beef balls in it. They have the best beef balls I've ever tried. The texture is quite different from other restaurants. Usually the beef balls in pho restaurants are the same ones you find in Asian grocery stores. However, I'm pretty sure the ones at Joyeux are made in-house. They don't taste as elasticity, so I suspect there is no/just limited use of additives and make them by hand in small batches. Their beef balls are also sold up at the counter for about $8 a pack - definitely a bit pricier but so good! The pho menu is pretty small here. They don't have anything with tendon or tripe, but I find the special beef pho to be satisfying enough. It has good portion of rare beef, brisket and beef balls paired with a hearty broth. I usually get it to go, but for some reason they never pack basil or limes for take out. Also note that they will pack the soup separate, but everything else is dumped onto a togo box, so your bean sprouts are pretty much cooked through by the time you unpack everything. Not really my preference, but I appreciate the gesture to save on additional packaging. If you do sit-in, I suggest going earlier or later to avoid the Downtown lunch rush. The staff can be pretty short with customers as they try to maximize space and efficiency. They absolutely hate it when parties of 2 are using a 4-top and are definitely not afraid to tell people off. I've seen it quite a few times. Overall, I think they have some of the best beef balls in the city and will keep going back for their special beef pho as long as I work downtown. read more

Ordered a bunch of stuff to try - beef short ribs (came on a bed of rice and had a really nice flavor), shrimp salad roll and mango basil roll (these are huge and can easily be shared, also comes with peanut sauce). The spicy chicken wings weren't too spicy and were fried well and juicy. We also shared a bowl of special beef noodle soup, which had beef slices and beef balls. I'm giving a rating with an increment smaller than .5... was hoping to stay away from that. Explanation inbound: this is one of those situations where I was about to give it a 4, but had second thoughts and felt a 3.5 was also too low. If 4 is too high and 3.5 is too low, 3.75 is all that remains (famous last words before a future review ends up with a 3.8 score). In any case, I got prawn and tomato Phö. Decided to go for it because it's the kind of thing I'd normally never order, but I'm trying to be more "adventurous" (lol prawn and tomato is adventurous). Girlfriend pointed out that one of the things she doesn't like about this place is that they add the garnishes directly into the noodle soup -- most Vietnamese places leave bean sprouts, basil and lime as sides. Gf got something spicy and delicious. Can't remember what it was but she said she always gets it. Spice is a love/hate relationship with me. Some hot spices give me bad indigestion but others are so satisfying. This one was not all that spicy but was oh so satisfying. Service 2.5/5 -- Bordering substandard service. Pretty unfriendly up until I came to pay the bill, when they had some cute things to say about me paying for my girlfriend. It was endearing, but nevertheless they were not very attentive throughout service. Cleanliness 5/5 -- Nice save on this one. The place was totally spick and span, which is great to say since they were also quite busy. Atmosphere 2.5/5 -- Lol. Bad table layout. Bleh tables and chairs. Weird interior and decor. (Note: In the past year or so since my first time here, I've never seen that special change, ever. So I guess it's safe to say those options are always "Today's Special", haha!) I usually switch it up between the Lemongrass Chicken or Fish, on vermicelli & with spring roll. Prices have gone up recently, but at around $11 for lunch downtown, it's not a bad deal at all. We had a decent sized group and ended up sitting at a long table with another patron on the end. Our server's got confused and thought we were all together, but all in all they were great. They gave us an update since the last 5 years and the impact of the Olympics. It was nice to see they were still there. 1 Star. Food - Our meal was good not great. We chose the Vietnamese items (Pho, egg rolls, Grilled pork vermicelli), nothing bad but nothing unique. These were items I could get at any number of Vietnamese places. One interesting note is that we ordered chi (Vietnamese jelly dessert) and it came topped with ice cream. Usually this item uses coconut milk, but the ice cream was different. My coworkers and I come here regularly when we're craving pho. Service is decent and the servers/owners are always friendly. This place gets packed during lunch hour so come early or late to avoid the rush. This restaurant slightly reminds me of a cafeteria - you order your food and pay at the cashier, find a seat, and the servers will deliver the food to you. There are a variety of dishes from banh mi, pho, vermicelli, to rice dishes. The menus however, are a little spread out and it's hard to see the full menu when you're lining up. Once you reach the cashier you feel rushed to order, which is overwhelming since some of the menu items were listed by the cashier. When this place gets busy, it can get a little hectic with servers walking around looking at the order numbers to deliver the food. It is a gem of a well run ethnic restaurant in the core of the financial district. They open early in the morning so you can have your fix of eggs and toasts but most patrons come here for lunch for their traditional Vietnamese faire. I had walked by it so many times and had never gone with the common belief of how could a Vietnamese restaurant downtown be any good. After hearing good things about it from different sources, my partner and I finally went there for a late lunch on New Year's Eve and was I ever wrong. My pho was authentic, tasty and bountiful with meat and noodle. My partner's vermicelli bowl looked delicious also. My greatest pleasure was the omelette with bean sprouts, shrimp and squid. It looked just like the one Anthony Boudin had on the streets of Saigon on his show No Reservation. It was perfectly crispy and I was glad they did not pad away the grease like many crazy healthy restaurants do. We came in the morning of New Year's Eve for an early lunch so there was no line whatsoever. However, if you come here for lunch during the week, either come EARLY or make sure you have time to wait in line. I've been here several times hoping to see what brings the crowds here. My conclusion? It's one of the few Vietnamese places in the downtown core. Finally tried a banh mi here and boy did it disappoint... It barely had any pork and they might have skipped out on the sauce. One of the few Vietnamese restaurants scattered across Downtown, this place has been around for years and is a solid A-OK for me. I'm not a fan of their pho so I always end up getting their lemongrass chicken on rice now. The portion is decent and the taste is OK. Not the cheapest but I notice all the Vietnamese restaurant prices have been increasing.. It's good for this part of Downtown but I won't go out of my way to come here. You have to order at the til, get a #, seat yourself and they'll bring the food to you. Place is packed solid on weekday lunch hour. Super quiet at dinner time though, making it easy for a quick dinner when you've got baby in tow in a stroller (their tables are cramped but still able to fit). read more

Didn't expect a place with such a name to be selling Vietnamese food. I don't usually eat Vietnamese food without my family since we usually order a variety of foods and as my parents were born in Vietnam, eating with family makes me feel like the experience is more authentic as they would know what the traditional tastes would be as opposed to ones that are altered to fit the taste buds of the customers. Pretty surprised at how big the location is for it being in downtown and their menu is as big as the place too! There's a large menu with a variety of Vietnamese food and even all day breakfast items which is definitely something I haven't seen in Vietnamese restaurants in Vancouver. My go-to item for any Vietnamese restaurant that I go to in Vancouver is Bun Bo Hue as that is the benchmark I use to judge a restaurant. Right when the bowl came, I could tell that flavours weren't going to be super authentic and spicy since the colours were very mild. And the taste of the soup was a little too sweet for my liking. The owner (or what looked like) was super friendly in letting us know that it was a seat yourself kind of place and we would order at the cashier and get a number in which they'd bring us our items. They actually sell a few Vietnamese goodies at the counter too (ones that I go all the way to Kingsway to get). The woman at the cashier had a Vietnamese accent as well so very happy to see that it's actually a place that has Vietnamese staff. Overall, would definitely come back to try some of the other Vietnamese dishes that I love since it's hard to find Vietnamese food in downtown as well, am also interested in checking what this all day breakfast hype is all about here! read more
