So far, I have tried 1. Chicken bowl It came with a good portion of two pieces of fried chicken, salad/slaw and egg! The sauce they used for the chicken bowl has a fish sauce taste, which I thought was rather awkward for a chicken dish. 2. Duck bowl The duck bowl tastes better than the chicken bowl for sure. A decent amount of food, but slightly more expensive at $15. 3. Pork belly bowl I was told this is the most popular dish here, however I don't think it delivers. The taste of pork belly is not well marinated, and it generally tastes quite bland. The lunch crowd is pretty busy. I was again told that they serve brunch. I may come back to try that, but for the lunch bowls, only the duck bowl is worth having, at least for me. read more

I had been meaning to visit Heritage Asian Eatery for a while now, and I finally tried it out. There were two of us and we visited around 6:45 PM. They had a special that day where we could add a couple dollars for a drink or bun. I ordered the chicken rice bowl ($11) and paid $4 more for a drink (lime iced tea or ginger soda, I chose ginger soda), and a bun (custard or sesame, I chose sesame). They took my name and they called it out when my food was ready. We were able to find a table no problem, as there weren't a lot of people yet. And luckily we arrived early because there was a constant flow of people coming in after we started eating. The ginger flavour in the soda was very strong but refreshing at the same time. I felt the sesame bun wasn't hot enough and as a result, the filling wasn't oozing out. I could taste the sesame flavour but it was very subtle, maybe the filling was too little in comparison to the size of the bun overall. My bowl looked delicious and was put together nicely. The fried chicken was crispy and perfectly cooked. The yuzu slaw had a good flavour to it, not too strong that it was overpowering. I thought the eggs were a little overcooked so it was just a tad hard. There were only three wood-ear mushroom, but they were big ones. It's a cafeteria style restaurant where you go up and order then they call your name out. For how busy it was, they were super organized and I got my food in a good reasonable amount of time. Came on a weekday late afternoon and was lucky the restaurant was not busy. The less than enthusiastic cashier took our order without saying hello. Prices can be a little steep (e.g. rice bowls are $12-$18 depending on the type of protein). I'm not sure how it works, but a Duck Rice Bowl is ~$17 and a Shitake Rice Bowl is around $12 and you can add a protein (e.g. duck) for ~$3-$4. This makes the latter option a better bang for your buck? We ordered two baos and a chicken rice bowl. Sadly, I wish there was more description on the menu (tip: check out their website for full descriptions of the menu items). I was surprised to see the chicken rice bowl was actually made of fried chicken and a big slab of the Chinese ginger/green onion sauce. I hate ginger. I sucked it up and ate it all because without the sauce, there wasn't any other flavor to the dish. The chicken thigh was crunchy outside and moist inside, but the two drums were overcooked and hard. The cabbage had a light lemony flavor and the fried taro sticks added a crunchy texture. The Chinese black fungi had no taste nor texture - basically served no purpose. The egg was cooked perfectly with a runny yoke. Portion is a little on the smaller size. My bf tried the two baos and like the pillowy soft bun, but complained that the pork belly was dry. He liked the duck bao though. Overall, the dishes had components we liked, but also some we didn't. Finally got around to trying this place after months of drooling over Instagram photos of their food. I had the Pork Belly Bao to start. It's everything you want it to be! Duck wings are nice with a dry rub. Lots of meat. Chicken bowl comes with 2pc fried chicken with that ginger onion sauce that you usually get at a Chinese butcher shop. I liked the fried taro strips and the tea egg. However I was not a fan of the sauerkraut veggies--that really threw me off. The matcha mantou was good, but not great. I feel like it could've been fried a tad longer for a nicer crispier outside. We have had Heritage Asian Eatery on our list to try for a while now and I'm only disappointed I didn't go sooner. I went during lunch time, which was a busy time to go, but myself and 5 lunch buddies were able to snag a spot at their long table. Given the number of people and how busy they were, the wait time for the food was great. Now the food--I tried the chicken bowl, which is two pieces of delicious fried chicken, with a vinegared egg, slaw, and some delicious crunchy things over a bed of rice. It. Was. So. Good. I've eaten a lot of fried chicken in this city and this is among the top 3. And the flavours of the rest of the bowl were excellent. I can't wait to go back and have it again. January 14, 2018. I'm updating my rating to 5 stars after my second visit here...was initially disappointed that they don't have their weekday menu on the weekend, but was extremely happy with "The Big One" which my partner and I split. Cute casual eatery with good food! We got the pork belly bao, steamed XLB and matcha mantou. The bao was 5/5, nice juicy pork and fluffy bun. Steam XLB was 3/5, mediocre and nothing special. Matcha mantou was 4/5 cause I love fried things and carbs, so you can really go wrong with this but the matcha dipping sauce was a little weird for me since I guess I prefer my mantou salty. So I just ended up dipping the mantou in chili oil and that was A+ haha The seating in here had some 2 person tables and a big communal table and some bar seating along the walls. Went to this place for lunch on a Friday - there were only a few other people in there. You order at the counter and they bring the food out to you when it's ready. It is not a sit down type of place where they serve you. After looking this place up online I was really looking forward to some amazing bao and Asian style bowls. It was a little underwhelming once we started eating. We ordered the pork belly, duck, and shitake mushroom bao and a duck rice bowl. The bao were $5 each and the rice bowl was $17 (CAD). The bao were good and our favorite part of the meal. The duck bowl tasted a bit gamey to me and the salad was just okay. The marinated egg was the best part of the bowl, the eggs were great! At home, I make up my own bowl foods mixing up a "green rice" with garlic scape pesto or chermoula or chimichurri and toppers like leftover marinated meats and of course, a runny poached egg for more sauce. But I like Asian flavors with the rice. Now I have another go-to for a rainy Vancouver day rice bowl food fix -- Heritage Asian Eatery, in the city's financial district. We saw highly rated reviews here, so we decided to give it a try for their brunch. We ordered a duck Benny bowl and an ikura omelette at the counter. We didn't pay tip because it was like a self serve lunch. The portion of duck Benny bowl and ikura omelet was average, but I personally felt that it was leaning toward less than the average. There were a couple of hash brown under two Benny eggs. Oh my goodness! They were SUPER GREASY!!! The duck meat was marinated with their sauce and dressing that it was SUPER SALTY. There was no rice or bread to go with the salty duck meat. I was very thirty while I was eating the dish. The omelette had a little bit of ikura. When I ordered a piece of ikura nigiri sushi (one piece), I got SO MANY ikura but comparing to this omelette, the quantity of ikura was less than what I got from the one piece ikura nigiri sushi. That was very sad. This restaurant was quite stingy on giving food to customers. The omelette was just eggs. Nothing else mixed with the omelette except some seaweed and a little bit of ikura on top. This dish went with salad but I felt it was a rip off. If I paid for $13 for a real omelette somewhere else, I would get a bigger portion and it would fulfill my stomach and meet my satisfaction. This place is bomb, I wish they were open in the evenings too! Came here for the first time and tried the Dan Dan Noodles and Yuzu Soda. Dan Dan Noodles were delicious in a peanut butter sauce and with ground duck meat. There was a good balance between the sauce and other ingredients, the texture was on point. I only wish they came with more onions, cilantro and cripsy taro to add more flavour and crunch because the bowl is big and you run out of the toppings too fast. At least I did. The portions are good for the price so I was very happy. Yuzu soda was good too definitely try it for a twist. I had their duck leg rice bowl (3.5/5 - $17) and it was good. Great flavours and good amount of meat. I also like their marinated egg. The price point is a bit high for lunch though. My second time was getting their dan dan noodles (2.5/5). They use udon instead of the usually ramen noodles. I felt like the sauce wasn't flavourful enough or it didn't stick to the noodles like it should. The ground pork that sat at the bottom was really good, if only the flavour transfer to the each noodle bit that would be perfect. I think this was overall an ok dish with some areas for improvement. Saw this place on social media and had it bookmarked for awhile now. Unfortunately I don't work downtown and this place is only open on weekdays so I had to rush over after work and try and catch them before they close. So glad my friend and I made it because it was delicious! I love the combination of the slightly sour and spicy pickled kimchi daikon with the crunchy fried onions and the fresh greens all mixed together in a big bowl of rice goodness. The creamy egg + saucy pork belly perfectly topped it all off. Took off one star because I felt they could've been more generous with the pork belly. It was quite a small piece in comparison with the chicken bowl where my friend had three generous sized drumsticks. I know this probably seems a bit low, but for all the hype I honestly didn't have a great experience with the food (not that it's not edible! just not worth it?) Had the duck and mushroom baos. The bao was the best part of both dishes, as they were both covered in way too much of their house peking sauce (like dripping out too much sauce). The duck was a shredded texture but some chunks were so tough ("older" duck meat or overcooked). The mushroom paired with the sweet peking sauce seemed a bit much as the mushrooms themselves are really sweet so the peking sauce doesn't really compliment it. They were cooked perfectly though and the fried taro strips on both baos were really good. We also ordered the pork belly bowl which is definitely a decent portion for the price. I enjoyed the slaw but the kimchi daikon was a bit surprising, it seems a bit weird to include in the bowl as they're big strips and not really mixable into the rice bowl? I think the sauce on the rice really confused me as it was quite dark in colour (like teriyaki sauce) but had little flavour at all - in the sense that there's just enough flavour to make you wish there was more and leaves you annoyed. I ended up also adding hot sauce to the whole thing just to get a bit more flavour. The pork belly was well done, very tender and soft and not overly fatty tasting but still with the fatty chunks. Would maybe come to try it again and see if the flavours improve but not in a rush to do so. read more

This place has a steady of people coming in and out - regardless of it being mealtime or not. I visited around 130pm and it was very busy and the wait was about 10 minutes for my 2 side dish orders. Sadly they stop serving their breakfast crepes by 11am, so I didn't get to try those this time around and they were also out of their daily specials. Bao and bowls per menu looked ok - the only thing that stuck out to me was the pork belly and the chicken leg bowl, but prices were a little more than I wanted to spend for a mid day snack, so I went for the 2 side dishes instead. $5 for 4 dumplings - they were slightly undercooked and the sauce it came with was a little sour - it could have used a minute more cooking time + pan fried for some crisp edges. Also was sad to just get 4 dumplings... $5 chicken wings were really good. Loved the spice rub, crispiness, and taste of this side all around. I'm enjoying their creativity but I experienced something a bit too funky. I had the shiitake bowl and it was quite good but there was quite a bit of cinnamon on the shiitake mushrooms. When mixing it all together it wasn't that potent but on its own it was quite over whelming and a spice I'm not used to tasting in my mushrooms. I had the beef Tataki too and boy it was tasty. The sauce they put on top is amazing. The place is all over the place with pricing. I think the bowls are over priced but then there's the beef Tataki which is under priced (don't tell them). It a healthy portion of beef for $8 and I would typically spend $16 for it elsewhere. The bowls are $11 and honestly should be in the $8-$9 price range. Only a couple of bucks I get it but it's my opinion. Will try again and see what else I can experience read more

When it comes down to a lot of these Asian restaurants I really struggle with my reviews(if you're not aware I'm a super picky eater and don't eat beef). Anyways, its the end of the week and all I'm wanting to eat is a good ol' fashioned burger, fries and shake combo. But, what do I do? Invite my boss to come with the rest of the team and make some suggestions if he wants. Bad decision on my part but hey, there was still a chance I'd get what I want I figured. As you obviously know by now that didn't happen and we went to Heritage, so my mindset going in was I'm gonna be disappointed regardless. Luckily its not too far from the office so I guess plus one point. When we got in, looking around I saw a few interesting dishes and I was smelling some nice aromas. There was hope! I ended up choosing the chicken bowl, overall it looked quite appetizing and honestly I was just a tad hangry to just sit and stare at this thing for an hour. Came for a quick snack. Ate the Duck Bao & the Pork belly Bao. It was decent... but it was a little too rich in flavor. Duck Bao was a bit too salty for my taste... and I'm not sure which Bao it was but like another yelper mentioned, they use a lot of cinnamon. I've been trying to visit this place for the last three weeks and each time I come, there's no seating during their lunch rush. I tried to call in to make a reservation but unfortunately, they don't do reservations but they did advise that their usual Friday lunch rush happens around 1230pm so coming at 1pm shouldn't be too bad. I arrived at 1pm and it surprisingly full. There were only two seats left in the whole place but right after I went up to order, the entire place nearly cleared out! The staff members will take down your name with your order and call you when it's ready but be sure to have your ears perked because the place can get really loud and you can miss hearing them even if they're yelling! I got the pork belly bowl in which the pork belly was definitely the star of the show! It is super tender and very easy to chew. The bowl had all kinds of textures and flavours from the soft marinated egg to the crispy watercress to crunchy kimchi daikon. Portion wise, the bowl was a little too small for me but since you're getting a big chunk of pork belly with it, I guess that's where your money is going! Overall the three week wait was worth it! HAE prides on creating food with Asian flavours using locally sourced ingredients to create a modern take on traditional classics. I had the duck confit bao, pork shoulder bao and the cotechino bao. Though the bao's were tasty, they seems a bit too pricey ($7 a piece). I guess its the Coal harbour pricing. Also the size of the bao is quite bigger and the amount of meat compared to it is less. Great food and great customer service. Minimalistic decor, clean and comfortable. We had the duck confit bao, shittake bao and cotechino. The bao was light and pillowy, by far my favourite bao would have to be the cotechino, house made sausage, greens, house picked daikon, crispy onion and a drizzle of aoili. Came here over the weekend and ordered the duck bowl and the pork belly bowl. Also got a side of chicken wings and an order of the matcha mantou. This is an Asian type West Coast fusion restaurant. It's very creative and the food was good, but it's not something I would necessarily crave. I'm not used to eating my duck shredded, so I wasn't a big fan of that. But the potato was presented in an original way and the poached egg was perfect! I would add more salad to the bowl. The dish was more of a plate than a bowl. So this new eatery caught my eye because it's around the corner from my hotel. My friend and I super excited about the freshness of our rice bowls. The veggies, garnishes and light touch of sauce blended so beautifully. The bowls are a great mixture of flavor for the eye as well as the mouth. The duck was tender, full of flavor and well matched with medium boiled egg, carrots, radishes and greens. The daikon kimchi in my friends pork belly bowl was amazing and helped give her bowl its own unique flavor. This place was so good I took another visiting friend back for breakfast. I had the duck bowl, and although everything was delicious in it I had to dock a star because the watercress garnish was yellowed and rotting! I seriously don't know how anyone could've looked at that and thought it was OK?! That aside, there was a generous amount of duck done 2 ways which was flavoured beautifully, the sous vide soy sauce eggs were delicious, and the slaw was well flavoured also. read more

This food was awesome! Counter service and meals came out fast. I got the chicken bowl which had two good-sized pieces of fried chicken, rice, slaw, and mushrooms. The chicken itself was tender although could have had a big more flavour. The entire bowl was amazing though, the flavours and textures really fit together nicely. I loved the rice and the lightly sweet sauce. Also tried a duck bao which had pieces of shredded meat as well as lightly pickle cucumbers and some other toppings. Really delicious. Be aware there's no alcohol here although they have glasses of water for free and other bottled drinks for sale. read more

Came by for a late lunch/early dinner today as we've been trying to check out this new spot for a while which has been getting great reviews, including making it to the Vancouver Sun's recent top 10 list of best new restaurants. the room is casual and has a 'fast food' dining feel though where it's situated makes sense as it's in the midst of the financial district which should make it a busy place during breakfast and lunch. That didn't bother me at all as we were there for the food. The only strange thing was that there was fruit flies hanging around our food. I didn't think they existed in the middle of winter! We shared the duck bowl, cotechino bao and chicken wings. The duck bowl had plenty of meat, both duck breast and shredded duck. The egg was also delicious though I think egg makes a lot of things better. This was quite tasty. The wings were like crack. Super moist of the inside covered with a delicious five spice and a bit crispy. The bao was a bit disappointing. At $7 for a larger bao I wouldn't order it again. I would prefer to pay a similar price for two smaller ones which is easier for sharing. As you can see by my pic, it was pretty messy. The cotechino wasn't bad and interesting, but nothing to write home about. All in all the food was decent. I love this kind of fare but there are also plenty of choices with bao down now having three locations, trendy Korean restaurants serving up something similar etc. read more

I came with two coworkers on Friday lunch. It was busy but our food came out fairly quick (you order at the counter and it is seat yourself). I ordered the chicken rice bowl which tasted great! It had two pieces of fried chicken and lots of toppings that you don't find at other places (ex. wood ear mushrooms, yuzu cabbage slaw etc etc). Flavours were fresh and a good size. The prices are also reasonable, my bowl was $12 and totally worth it. Wasn't the healthiest lunch (felt like taking a nap after, could be that it was Friday though!) but definitely recommend to check it out! read more

I didn't get to try everything I wanted on the first visit. My friend and I shared a pork belly bowl, a duck bowl, cauliflower, and fried chicken. The location has a sit down ordering feel to it, but you actually place your order at the counter. There isn't a menu, even though yelp has some pictured. There is a display that gives the options, but no info on what each plate contains. To which I would say isn't the greatest way to display food items. That being said food came out pretty quickly. The plate was pretty full large pieces of pork belly and rice and yuzu slaw. My friend really liked his duck bowl, the pork bowl was slightly underwhelming. I can't say the yuzu slaw was my favorite either, I think I would have just preferred raw veggies. The cauliflower was very nice, but the florets were left too large and because of this soaked up lots of oil. They had a great flavor tho. The chicken was also very good. Overall the sides were nicer to me than the main dishes. Also to add, the menu and opening times contradict and I think that should probably be fixed. read more
