Upon receipt of a Heritage costume, i was not impressed with the quality so, without opening any packaging, I immediatly returned the product and requested a refund. Even though I had proof of the return, after more than a month Heritage did not issue acknowlegement of the return and told me they don't do refunds . If it weren't for ETSY I believe that Heritage would have continued to IGNORE me. The place was empty but i was told you needed an appointment to "look" what a waste of time. The woman was rude and started spitting out prices. We can not thank Heritage Costumes enough for their help in finding two hard-to-find costumes for our Son's 5th Grade Walk Through The Revolution play, at the last minute. Granted, we did start late in the costume search, we needed to find two American Revolution costumes for Benedict Arnold and Crispus Atticus, they had both costumes in stock, at reasonable prices. We chose not to purchase all the pieces of each costume and went with just the jackets, shirt and hat and opted for khaki pants that my Son already had and that ended up being a good choice for my Son. The costume pieces were of high quality and at decent prices. We are very satisfied with our purchases from Heritage Costumes and we do plan on working with them, in the future, for our family costume needs. I figured my best bet at finding a beret would be a costume shop, so I plotted a scavenger hunt throughout the South Bay in search of the perfect beret (which I quickly learned isn't pronounced in accordance with our filthy American phonetic ways -- really, when the hell have you ever had to drop the word 'beret' in normal conversation?) My first and only stop was at Platinum Costumes, since it's conveniently located in downtown Torrance. They carry an average sized amount of in-the-bag costumes and accessories, but they have tons of higher end merchandise and theater-quality costumes that will be sure to blow you (and your pocketbook) away. I'm sure you were going to ask, so I'll tell you now that they carry an extensive selection of mustaches made from 100% human hair. I'll leave it up to you to wonder from who and where exactly on their body this hair came from, but it sure does make for a spiffy 'stache! This place is awesome! I first went here to look at some costumes and accessories for a pimp and hoes bachelorette party (bachelorette being the pimp, of course) in September. This store in Old Town Torrance (and its warehouse) carries the goods for pimpcostumes.com as well as some other websites, so lucky for me in Gardena! I called to inquire about coming in to try on shoes and hats and they were kind enough to set aside everything I wanted to look at--multiple shoe sizes to boot (punny, yes). My friends and I came in a Saturday afternoon and tried on all the goods. I left with a pair of clear, platform stripper shoes with goldfish in them for something like $50. Legit, comfortable, good quality. One of my girlfriends bought a pimp hat (tried on 4 or 5 priced between $10-25), a few pieces of "bling" ($5 apiece?), and maybe some false eyelashes ($7, I think--large selection as well). I'm heading back tonight to try on some wigs for a Halloween costume. Called ahead again and it looks like I'll have 6 wigs to try on for what I described. Such a selection! Update coming soon... Bought a wig for my costume, $29.95. Even though the store was hectic (small store plus other revelers seeking out costumes), everyone was helpful in helping me try on lots o' wigs--giving me tips on how to wear my hair underneath to actually assisting with putting it on. The staff is attentive and knowledgeable unlike shopping at the big box Halloween stores. Here you get personal attention and theatre quality costumes. Some may consider it pricey but if you tried to make a costume at home that was comparable to what they already have ready for you you would spend way more. Plus if you are looking for originality this is the place. If you can think it up they can probably help you make it possible. International Costume of Torrance makes studio quality costumes that look exactly like what you would find in movie, film, television and theatrical productions. If they dont have it, they can find it, fabricate it or build it. They do rentals and purchases. Although I have not been in some time: I used to be quite a regular customer there. Used to DJ and work crew in high end night clubs, parties and events from the 1990s to mid 2000s plus theater work and wore themed outfits, costumes, uniforms and the rental stuff that they have here is world class. Some uniforms are authentic others are modified or to original spec replicas. They also can get and stock some cheap crap in the front, but for the best costumes, the stuff that will win first prize and go toe to toe with the high end exclusive Hollywood crowd: this is the place. Owners are Fritz and Cat.....great people. If you tell them that Ayla and Veronica referred you it might elicit a funny response.....especially from Cat, she is the sarcastic cynic of the bunch. They do offer lower end stuff that is comparable to other costume shops, but dont waste time with mass produced, get the real authentic look, it is AMAZING how much better that you look and feel. Ask yourself what sort of memories do you want to have? Do you want to show up in a cheap knock off or the real thing? Cheap costumes are an embarrassment. Do yourself a favor, do it right. :) I still smile at some of the events and gigs that I did in costumes from here nearly 20 years later. Those are worth more than anything. I need three costumes on Saturday 10/29/11 for a party that night and International Costumes saved my day. All I had were my husband and his buddie's measurements and a VERY short time to make something happen. Knowing that I was trying to make the near impossible happen I went in not really expecting to be able to get something on such short notice. They were incredibly busy on Saturday as was to be expected, but they outfitted myself and my two guys beautifully as pirates. The guys are big and so am I, but they worked with me to get us all in the same theme. Our costumes were a big hit at all the places we got to show them off at, and the staff at International Costumes was just as big a hit in my book. I hope next year that my friends will decide to make an early appointment with me so we can browse and play dress up until we find the most fabulous option available, with so many choices here I don't think it will be too hard. This place is pretty great folks. The staff was really helpful and they had everything I needed. It's nice to know a place has unique costumes you can't find anywhere else, and full blackout clothes for you night raids - I mean, uh... ignore that. Heritage costumes also is pretty good quality. They have lots of hats, shirts, dresses, and a full black face mask so no one can identity you by your unique eye color - wait, ignore that too. The prices are especially nice. It's not like trying to buy costumes in Hollywood or at like the Ren faire where everything has a premium and the quality can be all over the place. It's tough when you're on a budget now that everyone has IR cameras installed all over and your blackout costume can still be seen because of ambient light that's picked by my IR- shoot. I did it again. Look, the important thing is that Heritage Costumes checks all the boxes and not what I do with my spare time at 2am. Great quality at great prices, a good location that's convenient for pretty much everyone living on the south side, and a very friendly staff that definitely had some questions when I came back with dog bites all over my blackout clothes. They were very kind as they called the police and banned me for life. No hard feelings everyone! Just kidding folks. The blackout clothes aren't for night raids. They're for the secret ninja academy I flunked out of. Heritage doesn't even sell them, I'm just embarrassed that I failed the sword catching portion of the exam. Can't win them all I guess. I recently went to International Costumes to rent an outfit for this coming Halloween. They request that you make an appointment with them during Halloween time since they tend to get pretty busy. So I made my appointment for myself and a friend. The people there are great and very friendly. They asked us what we were looking for and for myself, they showed me different things they had in my size. I tried on two different outfits and fell in love with one of them. They also include other accessories (excluding shoes & stockings); I chose a saloon girl costume and they included a feathered headband, garter and feather boa with the dress & skirt. For my friend, he was looking for a Clint Eastwood-type costume i.e. a poncho. Luckily they had what we dubbed THE Poncho because it was their ONLY one. When I first walked into this store, I was amazed at the selection. Amy was extremely helpful and got my husband and I fitted into renaissance costumes for rent. We were excited to wear them the next day at the fair, but when we got home, we realized that we were missing essential parts of our costumes. We called the store and sadly found out that they had closed for the evening and were closed the next day. So next day, we went to the fair with half of our costumes. Such a let down. We went in today to explain our situation and to return the costumes, and the gentleman we spoke to didn't care that we didn't receive part of the costumes we rented. We asked if there was something he could do about the issue, and he went to the back to speak with someone. He came out to speak to us again, and he said, "My associate said she saw you wearing the costumes at the fair so good bye." We were shocked at the lack of customer service. So long story short, store has a great selection of costumes for rent and for retail, but they obviously don't care about customer service. I would have gone back if they cared about their paying guests. Not worth it if you could purchase at an online store or Etsy. Edit: Now that the owners have replied, I have yet to hear any form of customer service. We could not wear the full costume, BECAUSE we were not given the full costume. We did not lie or come back with the pretense of ill will. Yes, we got there to the store late, but no one informed us that it was late or else we would have gone home no issues. Yes, we received what we paid for, but we were told by Amy that we could use the extra items no charge since she forgot to write on our form (that would have been some form of customer service had the items been in the bags). And sadly, the owners comment shows they don't have any customer service. My husband did get angry, but he only blew up at the fact that your store didn't give a single thought about keeping your customers happy. Not once did we receive an apology. Purchased a cloak for my wife at the end of Nov for xmas.Received item in mid Dec fair enough, but they say you have 7 days to return items but only for store credit in which you have 120 days to use or you lose it. That being said item was a xmas gift, so come xmas day wife opens gift,hates gift,says it looks like cheap third rate crap(I'm cleaning the language up). Contacted the seller through Etsy from where I purchased it. Explained my situation, said I would return item which I did in unworn, unused shape. Received an angry email from someone who obviously has some anger issues saying they will not return the item per their policy. I once again explained this was for xmas so why would she open the gift early. Anyhoooo we are now to the point of filing a credit card fraud claim against these boneheads in which I will be reimbursed and they will have to deal with my credit card company. I was in yesterday and a girl named "Kitty" helped me and my husband. She seemed very out of it or on something. Aside from that while trying to find theme costumes she told me that there was only one costume that would fit me as I was "bigger". I am a size 10 but was made to feel like a 400lb slob. She said that I could problably try a mens costume but other than that there was only a Wonder Woman costume that would fit me as again it comes in bigger sizes and I am "bigger". I really think that some sensitivity training should be in order as there are people that rent costumes that are not a size 2. It was my first and last time in your store. What a turn off! Rented a costume for a school play; asked for a particular size for a 5th grade student (youth large); shirt ended up being an infant size ... so small that it wouldn't even fit over his head. Not a huge deal for the report -- though it could have been -- as we substituted our own. But the response upon return was not one of apology but instead blame ... "was he here to try it on?" was their only response. Had they not grabbed the wrong size themselves, it would have been fine, so it appears that they cannot be trusted to find the size asked for. Normally a business that makes a mistake steps up and at least offers an apology. Instead they blamed us for their error. I recommend that you go elsewhere. I placed an order online for a costume on 8/30/10 and Platinum Costumes canceled it the next day because it was out of stock. Not once did they call or email me to notify me about the cancellation. I have tried to contact them via email and telephone in regards to a refund and no one will contact me in regards to a refund (today is 9/13/10 and still nothing). My son and his friends were working on a film for a final project for their high school history class and needed costumes ranging from the Renaissance through Colonial periods. We went to Heritage Costumes just to inquire, but ended up getting everything we needed there. They asked if we had an appointment (we didn't) and then spent over an hour helping us even though we didn't have an appointment. I had an idea of how much things were going to cost from having rented Colonial kids' costumes here before, but my son and his friends were in for a bit of sticker shock when we inquired about the adult-sized costumes. When we explained to the staff what they were working on and that it needed to be on a budget because there were so many different costume needs, they quickly went to work and totally helped us figure it all out. The staff are very knowledgeable and helped us see where some of the items could do double duty. They helped us figure out exactly what we needed to evoke the different time periods and historical figures we asked for while trying to keep the cost down by only renting certain essential pieces rather than entire ensembles. They took the time to show us different options and make recommendations. They normally give a discount for school-related rentals, but they were even kind enough to give us an extra discount as things were starting to add up. I spent most of yesterday searching for a Halloween costume for an upcoming party. I found Heritage Costumes near my home and decided to pay extra for something more substantial than what was offered elsewhere. I expected to be greeted with a friendly smile and a helpful attitude. Alas, this was not the case. A very arrogant, pierced young man met me at the counter. When I explained that I was not sure what I wanted, he immediately lost interest. He made sure to tell me that I would be charged for 15 minutes to try on three costumes. When I asked how much rentals were, he said anywhere from $65 and up. Now instead of taking a look at me, seeing that I was an older woman and making suggestions as to what would suit my figure and budget, he said nothing. A young woman working in the store just stood there and offered no assistance. I was not able to view the stock as it was in the back so I really didn't know what they had to offer or the prices. In desperation, I asked if they had any books or catalogs I could look at, and he waved me over to three books sitting on the counter. I looked through one, and every single costume that I might have considered had a "Not available" sign on it. The pair of disagreeable sales assistants said nothing. No one offered to help me. We just looked at each other blankly and I took my leave. What a terrible experience! What an awful way to do business. These people do not belong in customer service and should be fired. I will never go back there. I found a cute outfit at another store for very little money. This is a snobbish, arrogant and totally unacceptable way to treat potential customers. read more
