Herkimer is a nice little coffee shop that roasts on site. I will keep this brief. Be aware they are a Cash Only joint and they do post it at the register. Coffee is always very good and well made. Decor is nice, I do notice that a lot of the tables are taken by laptop wielding coffee drinkers. I don't know how a place can manage that other then shutting down the free wifi or being very militant about it. I guess its so common like back int he day there were places that were for smokers and other places that was non smoking. There are coffee shops in town that are non-wifi. Service is always very polite and friendly. If your in this neighborhood you should drop in and enjoy a Joe. read more

Herkmier Coffee is a fantastic coffee shop in the Phinney Ridge/ Greenwood area of Seattle. The store has a great local owned feeling to it. Prices are competitive, servicve is fast and very personable. The quality of the drinks is outstanding. It is very clear the staff takes time to make sure each order is prepared correctly and with a smile. This is one great local business I would highly recommend. I bought the first pound of beans for my new place here and it was a revelation. They have incredible coffee - and quite a variety. From single origin to blends, from dark to mild, they have great stuff and none of it is over roasted. Their prepared drinks are a work of art. This is really a great neighborhood shop, where you can chat up the baristas. Very Seattle - art on the walls, dog owners sitting outside rain or shine. The space is bigger than it looks, so feel free to bring a group. The coffee bar area is small, but they have an adjacent room with some larger tables for study groups, work, or just hanging out. You can also sit on a kind of ledge against the window outside, which makes for fun people watching. They have really delightful pastries. I recommend the cheese and broccoli croissant. I spent an entire Sunday morning once with a cafe au lait, a croissant, sitting by their huge (almost) floor to ceiling windows alternatively people watching and reading. This is one of my favorite coffee digs in Seattle--especially on a Saturday morning--but just about any time will do. It is also the spot where Herkimer roast their beans--so if you come on a Saturday morning it's likely the house'll be filled with that lovely fragrance of roasting coffee and the sounds of the cooling tray mixing those delicious little beans around. I did learn this morning that apparently they only do the almond croissants on the weekend--which is a bummer, but I somehow survived with a broccoli cheese croissant that was delicious. Good coffee conveniently located on the main street! Popped in here and had an iced latte yesterday afternoon - there's lots of seating, and a bench outside if that's your preference. Seems like a good spot to work as the seating consisted of mostly 4 seater tables. I'll preface this by saying that I'm a teenager, and on the day that I went to Herkimer I was wearing a giant puffy hat with a pom pom and ridiculously bright red shoes. I had a lot of calculus homework to finish, so I thought Herkimer might be a good quiet place to work. Upon entering, about 7 men who were all wearing gray, black, or brown immediately looked up at me as if I were an alien. I smiled awkwardly and asked the man at the counter if they accepted debit cards, and he said no they didn't, so I should go get cash at Ken's across the street. I looked around, and the only place to sit was at a single table wedged between two guys who were both working on laptops and did not look particularly welcoming. I thanked the man and went over to Fresh Flours (also on Phinney Ridge), where no one gave me weird looks for wearing bright colors. 3 stars because I'm sure the coffee is great, but Herkimer is definitely not for everyone. read more

Coffee - Yay! Good coffee - Double Yay! Great coffee - hip hip horray! I would definitly rate this as a great coffee place. The staff is quick with the order and they get it right. The atmosphere is cool with free wifi and plenty of room to hang out. I LOVE the seating that faces onto Greenwood. The only negative is the cash only thing. Who carries cash? Were in the 21st century right? If not, my coffee should be a nickle! I figured it's been four years since my prior Herkimer review so I thought after dozens upon dozens of visits, I should probably write another. One that gives Herk the justice he deserves. So yeah and Yay! I'm a fan. Espresso is consistent, pastry selection always plentiful and they change it up often. Barista snottiness kinda still exists, but it's cool, they only get my left over change anyway. Free wifi still in full effect. Hours are decent. I can usually find a spot to sit inside or outside and if not, I'm ok with it because walking with coffee can be fun. Caffeine is a stimulant, ya know. I can't sit still anyway. read more

I'm not in Greenwood often, but I was looking for a place to get some work done recently, and in the neighborhood. I had a cortado, and it was astonishingly good. Just spectacular. I only give four stars because I also had a blueberry muffin and it was totally dry and stale. It's obviously unimportant - I'd rather a coffee shop work really hard on making excellent coffee than put a pile of energy into their baked goods (unless that's their specialty), but it's nice to be able to have a snack without having to leave, and it took me like three glasses of water to get the muffin down, it was that dry. Herkimer oozes with character. The space is bright, airy, crisp, and clean. The americano that I ordered was flawless. Every drink is made with 2 espresso shots, so keep that in mind when you order your drink size. This was a bit of a quick stop for me last weekend after getting gelato near by. I went in with some friends and ordered a cold brew coffee. The drink tasted just right. Got that strong coffee flavor that I need and was refreshing at the same time. I pretty much left after I got my drink to-go, but I can say that the service was friendly and there was no hassle. Awwgh... CASH ONLY, CASH ONLY, CASH ONLY. You're killing me! It's a royal pain in the ass when I just don't have enough for an Americano. There seems to be an ubiquitous cash amount of around $2.30 that hangs out in my wallet during these awkward situations. Could you please just charge me an extra 50 cents for the VISA/MC services?! I'm fine with that logic. Their coffee is solid, particularly their bulk coffee being sold. The oil content on their beans are glisteny and perfect. I'd go for their drip blend which is well balanced without being too acidic. It smells so damn good when I'm grinding the beans. I have my own dramatic Folgers moment each time. The shop space is clean cut, and has a mid-century vibe. Lots of benches and chairs outside with happy dogs waiting on leashes. Ample diner-style counter seating that faces out to Greenwood, for spacey gazing. Studied here during finals and was a conducive environment. read more

This used to be my favorite coffee shop on the North End but in the past few years my stomach hasn't handled coffee well so Ive taken a liking to chai lattes or cocoa/cider in the fall/winter. I was so excited to visited this past weekend as it had been years and was shocked and disappointed to find out the only non-coffee option they have is leaf tea. Maybe they cut back due to COVID or maybe they never offered other options and I never noticed as its been years since Ive visited. I heart Herkimer. The customer service here is always top notch - very friendly and conversational but not so much that you feel like you can't walk away once you have your coffee in hand... of course, genuine enough that I've more than once stood around to chat a while. All of their products are high quality and prepared artfully (I'm not just talking about the pretty designs they make in your cup, they know their drinks and they craft them well). Unlike nearly every coffee shop in Seattle, they don't charge varying prices for varying sizes of tea. This only makes sense because they're using the same amount of product (perhaps some extra water). It's $2.10. The end. Same deal for hot chocolate which they really could tack a few extra cents onto considering that they're using more milk. While I'm on the topic, the cocoa is impeccable. Yum! Yes, it's cash only, but that's forgivable. My brother ordered some crazy drink that I could never remember when he came with me. Something about quad-shot and yadda-yadda. Nonetheless, he said it was excellent and that the price was comparable to other places around the city. The roasting is done on-site and you can watch them do it from some bar stools in one section of the shop. Otherwise, the ambiance is nice - calm, hip (enough), welcoming. It's a great place to catch up with a friend or get some work done. I wouldn't prefer to read here but that's only because they don't have big comfy chairs. My only wish for Herkimer is that they would stay open later. They're more of a weekday/weekend spot versus a place to swing by after work. This place is lovely - frequent it. read more

It's never a good start/sign when a customer isn't greeted and instead is made to feel a burden. Even more so when it's a nearly empty shop with two folks behind the counter. I consider Herkimer my go-to study spot. I love sitting next to the windows on a sunny day. The people aren't snarkey hipsters or brooding "coffee artEESTs." It's really a bright and energizing setting, which is likely why I get more studying done here than other coffee shops. The coffee is tasty, but can run a bit on the bitter side. I don't mind, though; I put so much milk/sugar in it anyway. One downside might be their cash-only rule. If you don't have cash on hand, you've got to Ken's to buy a soda that you probably don't need, to get the cash you do. It really irked me at first, but now I'm accustomed to it. read more

This is our top pick for Friday doughnut day! Kara and a rotating cast of characters (Chad, who plays the best CDs EVER, is her current cohort) make gorgeous cappuccinos (did you really want me to write "cappuccini"?) and feed us Top Pot doughnuts. Don't want a doughnut? They've got tasty scones and croissants from Essential Baking, too. They have kind of a mean sign about keeping your kids quiet (those wannabe startup entrepreneurs can get pretty loud on their phones, too, ya know), but the staff themselves have always seemed relatively kid-friendly. There are enough laptoppers here all day that a friend of mine calls it "Workimer," but luckily they reserve a section of the place as a laptop-free zone, so you really can come in with a friend in the afternoon to chat and not feel like you're disturbing the office. read more

I'm going to echo Brendan M. and praise the Americanos here. I just moved to Seattle, but have been sampling the Americanos all over Ballard/Phinney Ridge, and this is my favorite so far. It's within walking distance of my house (but damn that steep 65th Street!) and it's a good place to take a laptop--their chairs aren't cozy, so don't expect to snuggle down into an overstuffed armchair while you dive face-first into a cornmeal blueberry muffin (from Macrina--after 4pm, all pastries are half price). I'm happy to sit a couple of hours at their utilitarian chairs or benches and read the internets at blazing speeds because all of their Americanos have two shots and I read faster when I'm caffeinated... So far, their staff is great. They're pleasant, friendly, and smile often, and really know their way around a bean. There's definitely a neighborhood vibe there too. I often see people bump into each other and chat for a while on their way in and out. Outdoor seating: There's a bench outside, and plenty of seating for dogs. :) HEARTS! read more

My partner and I were garage sale shopping and while strolling through the neighborhood stopped here. I ordered the Caffe Mocha and I know most coffee lovers will roll their eyes when I say this, but I usually have to pour in way too much sugar and cream to mask the bitter taste of coffee drinks I get from other places, but to my surprise this needed absolutely nothing, I may have said this statement aloud to which I was told if I liked it so much "Why don't you yelp about it" so here it is. I actually expected a bit more out of this llace than I received. Now don't get me wrong, the service is excellent and the barista was friendly. I was just disappointed in the latte itself. It had too harsh of a flavor than I like. I'm not too much of a traditional dark roast harsher flavor coffee guy. I greatly enjoy a really rich and smooth latte because, if done right, it compliments the smoothness of the coffe and makes the most enjoyable cup. This is as good as a neighborhood coffee shop gets in Seattle. Herkemer reflects the character of the neighborhood. The baristas have been there forever. It's not the best coffee I've ever had but the espresso drinks are top notch. It's always full as it seems to attract the home office crowd. Strangely almost everyone has a Mac... I was brought in my raggedy paper cup from the day before and they refused payment for the coffee. Little acts of a small neighborhood kindness that reminds me of how all this coffee business started in the first place. If you are visiting Seattle and are on a coffee tour don't miss it. Whenever I'm in the area I love stopping by. The drinks are great, the new pastries are delicious (I love the gf biscuit), and I love the atmosphere/energy. I do want to comment that I was in the shop at the same time as the gentleman who was asked to take his phone call outside who wrote a detailed 1 star review. In that position I wouldn't have been offended by the manager's comments - she handled it very calmly and in an informative manner. It is their policy. No problem. It is their business and I really appreciate the policy against phone calls - one sided conversations are really distracting. My husband and I both found the music at a great volume for working and the same as other visits. I respect their business policies, like I'd respect if someone asked me to take my shoes off when I entered their home. I found this location of a local coffee house chain (3 stores in total) in a lunch break of a workshop happening near by. The staff was friendly and efficient. The cup of cortado tasted good; unlike espresso drinks at many other third-wave coffee houses, it did not have a sour taste, which I hate. The almond croissant tasted well. I ended up visiting the other two locations later. I'll visit them again in my next visit to Seattle. read more

Coffee is fresh and delicious- my mocha was not syrup-y or over sweet. Herkimer gets 5 stars for its staff friendliness and generosity. My wife accidentally knocked her coffee onto the floor and the staff seemed more apologetic of the mishap than we were! No only did they immediately clean up the mess, she got a new coffee free of charge. I also appreciated the cashier asking if my wife was ok or burned at all.
