Charming and quaint little building with a fun and eclectic interior. Service was quick and friendly. Interesting seasonal menu with specials I haven't seen elsewhere. My Banana Cream Matcha was so tasty it attracted a little visitor. Good impression from my first Seattle cafe.

Ugly Mug is probably my favorite cafe near UW campus. I love the homely vibe the cafe gives off. It feels a little cramped at first but as soon as you find a spot, you can study there for hours. This trip I got a blueberry matcha. You could tell The blueberry compote was house made and the matcha wasn't too overwhelming. It was a perfect combination for drinks and I wish they had even more specials to try out. I've also gotten avocado toast here before and it was probably the best I've had in Seattle! All of the workers are generally friendly and I feel like I could ask any questions. Overall Ugly Mug just has this unique and creative aesthetic that sets it apart from other cafes. Your drink may take a little longer to come out but it's usually so worth it. The only advice I have would be for them to get a liquid sweetener like honey water for the counter so customers can more easily customize their cold drinks.

Great tasting coffee. Not recommended for families since this is a small cafe with limited seatings. Also not accessible friendly, there are a few step to get here. Prices are good, staff are friendly. No parking nearby. This mostly services the university next door.

Ugly mug cafe is a cozy spot in the U District area. The furniture and decor inside looks very vintage and homey. They have a lot of options on their menu, including house made syrups and interesting seasonal drinks. They even offer hemp milk, which I don't see too often at cafes. I had their latte with the house made vanilla syrup. It was really good - the coffee was smooth and strong, and the syrup wasn't too sweet. The only thing I wasn't 100% satisfied with was the temperature of the latte. I asked for it extra hot, but my drink was warm at best. I'm not sure if that's how they normally make their hot drinks or if it was just an off day. It was a little busy when I went, but the service was fast and friendly. I highly recommend giving this coffee shop a visit!

Got strawberry matchas and LOVED THEM! The strawberry flavor was not too subtle but not too overpowering. The employees were so friendly and the interior is nice and cozy. There weren't too many chairs since it's a little small but a nice place near UW to study or hangout. They have a pretty large menu and different milk options including hemp milk. Would love to come back and try something different (:

My fav cafe right now. The quality of the drinks and the food is above and beyond what you would expect from a quaint cafe! They use real chocolate and real strawberry in their drinks, which is why it's one of my faves. I really appreciate high quality craftsmanship. The sandwich has an aioli that takes it to another level, with a buttery, flaky croissant, perfectly ripe tomatoes, avocado, and quality ham. The baristas are always very kind, but I did subtract one star just because they never greet you when you walk in, or come to the counter, which happens to be a pet peeve of mine. I believe it should be customary to greet the customer first. Other than that, everything is amazing! Great spot to study with friends or enjoy a coffee date with your love.

We tried their coffee on a rare sunny day in seattle. The service was amazing. The coffee is really good here. The ambiance is weirdly amazing. Overall, a good cafe to explore and enjoy.

What cute little spot in U District (right across the street from the link station). Despite the day's winter freeze, it was sunny and a nice day to venture out into the city. I had an iced latte and a bagel with smoked salmon, cream cheese, the works (you know!). It was chilly inside the shoppe but it was still cosy and enjoyable.

My friend recommended me this place for their matcha lattes and had to try it. I got a seasonal special, strawberry matcha. The matcha was decent, I wish it had more flavor. The strawberries were all concentrated at the bottom and I didn't stir it so I only had the strawberry flavor when I was near the bottom of my drink. The strawberry syrup was really good. I'd come here again if I'm in the U-district area

    Croissant Egg Sandwich Avocado Toast

Such a vibey little corner spot away from the hustle and din of the Ave in UDistrict! There isn't a whole lot of space and the tables are pretty small and cramped, so it's not the best kind of coffee shop to get work done or anything, but it's great for a quick chat over some brunch. The tables are decorated with custom messages over the years and have some interesting bits of history stuck between the glass. Staff works quickly and drinks are always yummy as expected. The bit of food isn't substantial, but pairs well with the coffee. Highly recommend the Avocado Toast -- it's hearty for its size -- and the Croissant Sandwich was pretty typical but dependable.

Definitely a hopping place at the end of the workday. It's got a darker ambiance and it's cozy. It has indoor, outdoor, and patio seating, though we chose to stay indoor. Pro tip - the poofs make you sit REALLY low. The food choices around 1pm were dismal, and limited. Maybe they'd sold out, or maybe they just don't have a lot there, but nothing even looked fresh enough to warrant purchase. The other thing that killed me was the service. There was one person on the entire 4 hours I was there, and it made for an incredibly slow experience. It was friendly enough, if not a little dismissive. Prices are reasonable and there is paid parking across the street, but take that with a "for Seattle" caveat.

Exposed brick wall and warm tones from the wood furniture makes this shop a cozy third place. A few indoor plants give it a fresh touch. The baristas here are definitely dedicated to their craft! Their drink offerings are standard, although they also have housemade syrups and specialty drinks (seasonal mochas, lattes, etc) if you want to try something different. I love how they highlight their single origin espresso on the menu with the tasting notes. They also offer matcha and teas if you're more into that. I haven't tried any bakery goods, but looking at the pastry case, they're quite popular. Victrola embodies the perfect Seattle coffeehouse- one that I wish people knew more widely rather than the twin tailed siren that's spread globally...

I don't normally drink coffee (I'm more of a tea person, if all the boba and tea shop reviews I…read morewrite don't say anything!), but I'm always up for new experiences, especially ones that allow me to expand my taste horizons and ability to describe flavors and aromas. After booking a tea tasting at a local tea shop, I went around looking for coffee tastings and found Victrola. Every Friday at 11AM, they offer a free tasting class, so we, of course, booked the very next Friday! Arriving at the shop a bit before 11AM, it was pretty full, with most tables taken and a short line of 2-3 people in front of me. We checked in with the cashier and he said the barista was getting things ready. Maybe 5 minutes later, we were led to the room in the back, where the barista introduced the tasting experience and handed us two sheets of paper, one with the anatomy of a coffee cherry, and the other with their coffee flavor wheel. For this week, it was only us two for the tasting, so we had a full monopoly of the barista (according to him, the prior week was 8 people!). We were able to try two coffees - both single origin, one from Guatemala and the other from Colombia. We started by sniffing the beans and grounds, with the Guatemalan emanating notes of lightly roasted peanuts (per tasting notes, it's milk chocolate, orange, and "elegant") and the Colombian with dark soy and umami notes (per tasting notes, it's pineapple, melon, and date), at least to my nose. The barista brewed both via pour over (if I remember correctly, it was 203F water with 20g of the Guatemalan, 24g of the Colombian in 360g of water). I forgot the exact grind sizes he used. Interestingly, the flavor profile of the Colombian was completely different to me between the grounds and the final brew. Very fruity throughout - I'm not that adept at description, but it's definitely a fresher, crisp fruit, not dried fruit, and not red fruit or berries, nor citrus. I'll have to file this one away as pineapple and green apple, per the barista. In terms of mouthfeel, it's thick, almost syrupy, coating the mouth with the fruity flavors. The Guatemalan, on the other hand, is completely different, starting with roasted coffee, then still with the peanut notes, but also adding a caramel-like essence. Very 'brown' on the color wheel. Mouthfeel-wise, thinner, watery like tea. I have never had good quality coffee before and this was certainly an experience that opened my eyes to how good coffee can actually be. I still have a ton of tea leaves to go through, but perhaps when I'm nearing the end, I'll have to start drinking more coffee. Tea, then chocolate, and now maybe coffee? My wallet is crying...

The vibe of this place and the people that make it happen every morning are world class. Life situations kept me from making my way to the shop for a year or so, but when I walked in I was greeted with a smile and a "it's been a while!" The coffee is reasonably priced and imo - best in the area. It's consistent and while I'm a sucker for the 12oz cold brew - I've gone off script a few times and have always been pleased. I've got family that comes into town fairly often, and almost every morning they ask to go because they think about it when they're at home in Chicago. There's plenty of seating, tho it's sometimes so bumping (because it's a great spot!) it can be hit or miss if you can stick around and enjoy the vibe. But generally I've had good luck over the years setting up at a table and chatting with friends & fam before a hike, enjoying the morning with my pup doing some socialization training or throwing a few emails around to my corporate overlords. I've seen ads for their evening events and have been wanting to make it to one, but I always seem to see the poster days or weeks after the event!
