We visited Herman's on a Sunday close to noon. It was quiet when we sat down but the small restaurant with a lot of counter seating filled up. Our food came quickly and the server was efficient and polite. My boyfriend had biscuits and gravy with home fries. The biscuits and gravy were really good. The home fries were solid. I had scrambled eggs with banana pecan pancakes. The eggs were standard but the pancakes were definitely the star! There was a good amount of banana and they were fluffy and cooked perfectly. My only complaint is that I asked for a biscuit on the side and the server said they are only available as biscuits and gravy. But the biscuits are listed as a side option on the menu. Great breakfast, service, and prices! We came around 10:30am on a Sunday morning and were seated right away, despite how small it is inside. I ordered an omelet with sausage that is HOMEMADE (SO GOOD), onions, and swiss cheese. It came with toast and homefries as well. The homefries were delicious and the bread was super fresh. My friend got 2 eggs, toast and homefries for only $5 and she loved it. Food came out super quick as well. Really great place for breakfast!! Food is excellent. The diner is small and quaint. I love that one can actually see their food being cooked if you sit at the counter. The eggs and home-fries are excellent. On the recommendation of some locals whom (or "who", I get this right about half the time) I met at Harry's Place (up the road), decided to give it a try. Kind of nondescript building on the outside, with a hard pack lot. But seeing plenty of cars in the lot is always a good sign. Sat at a stool across from the griddle, and had coffee (excellent) and home fries (steaming and well spiced, if just a tad soft). Basic diner food. Lots of stools, and a few small tables. The short order cook, Kristina (?), is a rock star. Keeps everything running smoothly. The owner, Jodie, very personable. Overall, great service, fair prices. The type of place where they probably go thru 15 dozen eggs (maybe more) on a typical day. CBH is canned, but looked damn good sizzling on the griddle in front of me. read more

A bit of Americana that is fast disappearing is preserved beautifully by Christine who is the current owner of Herman's Diner. Most diners are where the locals tend to hang out for breakfast and or lunch. Seating is limited, probably less than 25 seats but I am sure take-out orders make up for the lack of seating. Christine has been doing this kind of work for 31 years and knows her away around the diner business. Hospitality, good service and good food are all in evidenced here at Herman's. They serve the diner classics; don't stray outside of their lane; offer simple time tested menu items while offering customers maximum flexible menu combinations. Customer service is paramount, all the folks who work here truly understand they are first in the Hospitality business; second in the foodservice industry. It's nice to see industrious workers who smile, are happy; efficient and engaging with their customers. This is one of those places Norman Rockwell would be pleased to visit and paint. read more

Update: I brought it down a few stars, we went on a mid morning weekday and there were only 3 other people there besides us. The cook was someone we've never seen before and same with the waitress, We ordered two basic omelettes, it took literally 45 minutes for us to get them and they were complaining while cooking the entire time. Plus the bacon AND egg in my husbands wasn't even cooked so he ended up getting sick. It's definitely not normal for them but pushed us away for now.. Honestly wasn't sure about it based on the size and reading its cash only, but decided to give it a shot. We walked in and sat down at a small table. It's mostly bar and a few 2-seater tables. We ordered coffee. I ordered the biscuits and gravy and my husband an omelet. It took an extra bit of time to get the food to us, but we didn't mind because we could literally see them making it. When it was delivered, amazing. My sausage gravy was creamy and perfectly salty. The biscuits underneath were definitely homemade and the home fries were cooked by a pro. My husbands omelet was just as delicious, you can tell the veggies were fresh and the toast was homemade. The portions were huge and the bill cheap. The staff was extremely friendly and personable. We actually got 2 of the largest muffins I've ever seen on the way out. Even though I literally couldn't eat anymore I had to try them. Aattempted to eat here with 3 others this morning. It was absolutely freezing in the restaurant, we sat at the only table that could seat 4, it was right against a window and very, very cold. I walked over to another area to see if it would be warmer and maybe we could move. The waitress, who was very nice, asked if everything was ok. I nicely said to her that we were very cold, the manager or owner, whoever she is snapped at me saying "The building isn't insulated, I have the heat set to 80, I don't know what else to tell you". She then turned her back on me and said nothing else. It makes sense why it was pretty empty of customers, what a nasty miserable person. The bright spot is that we left, found a lovely place called Diane's, great food, great service and great prices, this restaurant is also in Colchester, highly recommend it! Went here on a Sunday morning with my boyfriend, walked in and was instantly crowded by boxes and overflow of supplies. There was not enough room to stand at a safe social distance yet the employees kept allowing people to come and pile in. The bar is shut down due to COVID but was covered with so much stuff it was bit overwhelming. A single gentleman waiting before us went and seated himself and the staff (1 server, 1 cook) proceeded to ignore our presence all while getting him his drinks and taking his order. I would also like to point out that aside from this gentleman there was only 1 other table seated inside the WHOLE place. By the time we were acknowledged, a very rude women (whom is the owner) made her way over to us. She caught us off guard and made us order everything WHILE standing there. Never offered a menu while we were waiting and was then rushing us to get out order in. We were then seated and given our drinks (2 coffees and 2 OJ). We waited 30 minutes for our food, (Kielbasa egg and cheese sandwich, eggs OM with home fries, rye toast and a side of bacon) which were given in to-go containers and upon opening them, we were given the wrong meals. It took a few minutes to get anyone's attention to notify them of the mix-up and was then given another attitude for bringing this to the servers attention. To top it all off, the total without tip was $27 dollars. I almost fell over! Herman's is right off the highway so a very easy on / off if that's what you're looking for. The diner is a repurposed trailer home and they use ever square inch well. Two women were running the show when we stopped in and nailing it. We had the house special with two eggs perfectly over medium and also an order of french toast with eggs. We of course had bacon which is thin and crispy. The potatoes are HOT potatoes - give those puppies a good minute before you stuff your face. A great deal & just what we needed. read more

This place was the bomb! Went here on a breakfast date, after a ride through the beautiful CT rolling hills and country roads. It was awesome to stumble on this place. IT looked very packed, but upon going inside there was just enough room for the two of us. It was very cute and homey. The place was clean and the cornbeef hash was terrific. It's a hole in the wall that didn't look like much from the outside. And truth be told, the inside isn't that big either. But there I was - looking for a breakfast besides Dunkin Donuts. So, I ordered the eggs, bacon & potatoes. The eggs were done right -- really hard to screw that up. The bacon was a little fattier than I would prefer and the potatoes were actually kind of bland. They weren't bad, but needed seasoning and salt and could be a little crisper. Kind of came out like nearly mashed potatoes. And then there's the toast. It was burnt. No way around it. With a huge slab of butter. That was brought out 5 minutes after everything else. Burnt toast is just unacceptable. So, don't think I'll return. Wish it was better than it was. read more

I believe they were short staffed that day so they all had to pick up the slack. The place is very small so just be aware of that going in, they can't really accommodate parties larger than 4 except if the counter is empty. So... very daunting when we arrived. Parking lot was empty. We were a group of 4 and two of us were uncertain walking inside. A little disorganized and cluttered. Kinda worried about cleanliness too. But, hand washing happened at appropriate times and regulars kept coming and going. 90% of the food was great. I ordered corned beef hash and it wasn't very good. Obviously canned and over cooked.
