When school started I was tasked to plan a beach party to kick start the school year with some other families for the kindergarten class at our elementary school and I'm SO happy I broke away from the regular vendors that the school usually go to in the past. "Perfect Day Surf Camp" really did give us a SUCH A Perfect Day! The parents were happy to see a different group who brought in some new and fresh activities and the kids were happy that the activities were stuff that they could easily participate in! These are 5 year olds so it's no easy feat to keep them engaged but Perfect Day pulled it off! Most importantly, Robbie, the owner was AWESOME. She texts and emails - which I love because makes planning so much easier! PLUS, she was actually there to supervised and facilitate on the day of! The attending parents thought it was awesome too! Now I don't expect Robbie to be present at every event because her business was quite large. However we were really happy and grateful that the owner of the business was on site for our event because we knew things would get done right! There was some confusion , my fault for not reading the address listed on the contract clearly, about the meeting place on the day of the party however Robbie and her crew were on it! They quickly moved their stuff to our party site . It was just on the other side of the life guard tower, however they did have equipment and a tent already set up that they had to lug over so it wasn't easy but we so appreciate them for accommodating! Confirm the address with Robbie before the party! Don't be lame like me! Whomp Whomp!! Also! Have parents sign waivers before your party, but Robbie is a professional and actually brought waivers for all attending families to sign in person. Like I said she was on it and made things less stressful for us! So we've experience both with the surf camp and the beach party with Robbie and her crew and it's A+++++ all around! Highly Recommend! Not only did my kids have a total blast, but the camp is run like a well oiled machine. You can order pizza for your kids lunch online ahead of time so you don't have to make their lunches - and they'll LOVE you for it! You can order hats for your campers ahead of time too. And at the end of the week the moms get a free hat as well. Who doesn't love a freebie?! All the camp staff and counselors were kind, energetic and helpful with the kids. There's all kinds of fun things to do on the beach - not just surfing. They play all types of fun beach games . The counselors help the kids with everything. All the kids have to do is decide which fun things they want to do. It's all offered everyday. There's also plenty of shade if the kids need a break from the sun. The drop off and pick up was super smooth. Which is pretty impressive since it happens in the walk streets of Manhattan Beach where it can get pretty congested. But they have a staff member waiting to receive kids as they get dropped off. Then they inform the crew on the beach that your kids have arrived on a two-way radio and send the kids to the crew waiting on the beach. All very safe and smooth! This camp has clearly been operating long enough that they have it all figured out. But since it's run by moms, they have that certain attention to detail, only a mom would be able to do! This explains the highly experienced counselors, undoubtedly trained by Heather and Adam the owners. Some of the other camps in the area seem to have "on call" staff depending on the volume of drop in kids, which I found problematic because my kids could not identify regular staff to approach with questions and found themselves disoriented initially. This is what happens when companies exploit workers instead of seeing them as crucial childcare providers. The price difference at these other camps is not worth the inconsistent staffing or burnout amongst the employees about having unreliable work hours.

This camp came up in my "South Bay Summer Camps" Google Search, and I did not look back. I happened to book PBC on their last day of early enrollment. The staff was accommodating towards my hesitation towards booking my 4 yo. They answered every email promptly, and were extremely helpful with their information before camp started. Here are my takeaways from our first year of PBC Summer Camp: You book everything through their online portal. The portal is set-up so that you can enroll your child(ren) all in one shot. You pick the weeks that you want to attend, and they have an option to add or remove weeks. (You cannot remove a week once you've paid for it. I assume.) There is an optional lunch program that you can get as well. The food is delivered by Kelly's Corner, and the menu is provided a few weeks before camp starts. There is a Summer Camp handbook that spells out everything for you. It is emailed a few weeks before camp starts. The information is neither overwhelming, nor leaves you with additional questions. I actually appreciated the simple wording, and straight-forward handbook. Before each week, PBC sends a simple 2 page email with drop-off and pick-up reminders and any updates that are warranted. Sometimes there is a piece of paper that they give you at carpool that reminds you of the spirit weeks, but other than that, there is very minimal email correspondence that you need to keep up with - which I greatly appreciate. The themed weeks are awesome! Last week, was pirate week. They had a huge pirate ship bounce house for the kids, and the costumes were fabulous. There are dress-up days every Wednesday and Friday, and the campers and counselors get into character. Each week is truly memorable for the campers. My child gets in the car every single day at pick-up and talks about a game that she learned, a new song, or a friend that she played with. I am pretty sure that my shy quarantine child still has not said a word to anybody, but I do believe that she is starting to come out of her shell. Regardless, she is really having the best time ever! K plays so hard that she tries to keep the fun going at home. We have learned the rules of "What time is it Mr. Fox?" and apparently there is a blue monster in "Red Light, Green Light." K asks every single morning how much longer until we leave for camp. She truly loves to attend, and wants to go every day. This 4 yo is easy-going and chill. Drop-off and pick-up was simple and seamless since Day 1. The greatest part for me, is the extended alone time, since K comes home and walks herself into her room for a nap. One of the directors, Heather, greets every single car at pick-up and drop-off, and you can tell that she truly cares about the campers. Based on my conversation with her, this is their first time at RHP. If they happen to go back to their old location, we may be devastated by the 'longer' commute. (VERY short commute right now. Hah!) Our hope is that RHP has a pool, and they continue to let PBC use their campus for years to come. It is a great set-up, and the carpool line is always a joy. We look forward to spending the rest of the Summer with PBC, and it has been such a great stepping stone in our goal to reacclimate K to a structured school setting other than Mama School. The sign up process was easy, so I did so online and locked it in! While my kids (8 and 9 years old) are very beginner surfers, they love the beach, and the laid back days and small group experience offered by Camp Surf was a prefect fit for both of them. We did not go in with high expectations to get them riding waves within days, so we were okay that there was not a ton of pressure to do so, but I imagine if you have expectations and kids interested in doing so, the Camp Surf staff will follow your guidance. Huge thanks to Cameron and Claire, their main counselors for the week for making sure they had fun first and foremost.

Immediately after the first day, the boys shared their experience and asked to go back for the rest of the week. It's not a babysitter on water. These guys are very engaging. He has a bunch of friends that attend the camp and love going to it. This is our 2nd year! Wyatt is great and such a fun coach. A girlfriend and I wanted to find a lesson that would get our daughters water safe for the summer, we want them to build confidence on their own, not only when we are in the pool with them. We just started lessons with Melissa at her heated outdoor pool in West Torrance and so far so good! She is very patient with all the crying and the girls are learning and adapting so fast. I will update after the next few weeks of lessons but so far so good!
