Biased review why? Well when they first opened, I said who would go to this coffee shop there's a ton of them on Broadway, Sheridan is a residential area. As it turns out having no competition helps. And you know what? I live off Sheridan I'm in. It's really convenient. That's the bias review. The space is cute. It has copper ceilings, pastel decorated walls, unique coffee offerings , and food. The music is waaaayyyy too loud! Turn it down! I'm all for having good tunes playing, but it feels like I'm at an 8am club. There's no way to actually get any work done here and the staff seem totally oblivious to this. It also makes me extremely uncomfortable to have a mostly non-Black establishment and clientele playing music with the n-word in it (saying this as a Black person). Also, the prices are inflated comparatively speaking for a cold brew. I don't mind paying a little more because of the seating availability, but it's too inconsistent for the cost to make sense. This place used to be really solid, but the experience and quality has gradually diminished overtime. Whoever is the owner and/or owner needs to heed the reviews because regular patrons like myself will find elsewhere when the goal is to support minority owned businesses. read more

Hero Coffee Bar used to have one of the best cold brews in Chicago. Smooth, bold, consistent - elite-level cold brew. Now? Total chaos. One day it's great. The next day it tastes like chemicals. Then the next visit it's sour enough to make your face fold in on itself. Ordering a cold brew here has become a roulette wheel. The frustrating part is they clearly know how to make an amazing cold brew, which makes the inconsistency even worse. Right now, though, something has gone seriously off the rails. If you love cold brew, I'd steer clear until they get things straightened out. I'm rooting for a comeback, but currently every cup feels like a science experiment. read more

Great place to get work done, plenty of outlets and the tables have tons of space. The coffee isn't bad either, but if you are looking for "fun" coffees it's a little limited. The Vegan Donuts taste a little odd, more dense then you would think when looking at them. The bagel was solid too. read more

I love supporting local businesses and this coffee establishment is one I've been wanting to try for awhile. The coffee was good enough for me to give up my Starbucks habit. Hero coffee is always good. And I'm a huge fan of The Hero Bagel. This location is within the Lakeview residential area, and is a great place to hang out or even work a while. I cone here a lot. Its our neighborhood go to spot to walk to on the weekends or days off. They always play solid music. Its on the loud side wirh the music and hustle of the shop so if you can't compartmentalize or don't have noise canceling headphones and you're trying to study this wouldn't be the spot for you. I love the coffee here! I like it with that slight bitter singe so if you like solid coffee I'd recommend it for you! Bagels are hella delicious no matter if you're a plane Jane or like an everything or jalapeño cheddar you'll be happy. Their breakfast bagel sandwiches are hella solid. I personally mix and match the veggie with egg and cheese. Its a little more expensive but the best way for me to get the fresh veggies with the hearty egg and cheese flavor. My roommate got the smooth criminal for the first time and although it looks a little sad in the photo...she loved it. Its for the more sophisticated pallets. My favorite spot in Lakeview East to work remotely. The staff is friendly, there are plenty of places to sit with plenty of outlets. I enjoy their seasonal beverages, and their breakfast bagels sandwiches are really good. Also there's something to be said about a cafe that plays good music. read more

Overall good. Coffees n stuff is good I've had a couple drinks other than just the black coffee and I like it. The breakfast sandwich is always good too it's just sometimes they don't toast the bagel fully. Even on times I've gotten only a toasted bagel it'll just not be toasted. It's like a 60/40 chance of it being toasted or not so I still gamble and get the sandwich and enjoy it either way but cmon mfs stop being lazy with that toast job read more

I've been coming to Hero Coffee (at this and other locations) for years and was surprised I hadn't left a review yet. This coffee shop not only has phenomenal coffee and specialty lattes, but their pastries and bagel sandwiches are delightful. My go-to drink is either an iced lavender latte or the seasonal beverage. My bagel of choice is their Smooth Criminal, which has changed names over the years but is delicious - goat cheese, egg, sriracha jam, basil, on a bagel. The pricing is on the higher end of average - a fancy latte + bagel sandwich will cost $16-17. But the quality is worth the splurge. This particular location has plenty of seating for working, studying, or meeting with friends. A few downsides: not much parking and sometimes there can be quite a line (and wait for your food/beverage). If you're in a hurry, you may want to order in advance on the Ritual app. read more

A favorite local coffee spot! Hero coffee sits about a block away from my apartment, so convenience is key. The cold brew is delicious and many different options of flavor shots and milk available. I have ordered both in person and pick up. Sometimes the pickup option is temporarily paused because they're busy, but even if I order in person - staff is friendly and efficient. Bagel sandwiches are great, nothing over the top and extravagant, but just right. Some of my favorites are the usual suspect, smooth criminal and hippie sandwich. You have a choice of plain, everything, jalapeño cheddar or wheat bagel I believe. Hero offers assorted pastries as well, including vegan options. The coffee shop has a handful of tables to sit and eat/work/converse with friends etc. they have a station for ice water, extra creamer/sugar. They are dog friendly too:) read more

It tastes fire, either solo or with any of their milks (?!? how weird that nowadays we need to say milks, plural ?!?! - anyway, I like it w/ oat milk). Food. I adore this coffee shop, located steps from my office at DePaul. Mia is frequently at the register to take my order and is ALWAYS friendly. The whole staff is terrific. I recommend the bagel sandwiches -- flavorful and filling for when need some calories to get through your day. The little alley is so inviting and my guess is the illuminated "C-O-F-F-E-E" sign which guides you to the door is one of the most photographed landmarks that isn't the Bean or the Art Institute this vicinity of the Loop. read more

This was my first time trying Hero Coffee Bar but I pass it all the time on my walks. I was very impressed!!! I ordered a carmel latte with almond milk and it was perfect! Not too sweet, not too milky, the perfect ratio. The food looked so good but unfortunately I wasn't very hungry :/ I'll definitely be back to try the food! Definitely recommend stopping in here! It's in a nice location for a lot of people who live a few blocks away from the Broadway strip since it's the only coffee shop in for a few blocks depending on where you live. Sometimes there's a line, but usually it's pretty quick. They're occasionally out of items but again usually have what you want. Staffs super friendly. I was walking by the morning and caught a whiff of the bagels. I continued on my 3 mile walk. I was going to stop at a coffee shop but it was too busy on the street. I remembered Hero Coffee Bar and thought I'd try it out. First time here. Cool ambiance if a little loud playing 90's grunge music but airpods took care of reducing the sound. Great, friendly service through check out to delivery of my bagel. I had the Usual Suspect Bagel on a jalapeño cheese bagel. It was hot and melty and gooey and d#%* delicious. Food is great! Food was just ok. My daughter Ed ordered two everything bagels with egg & cheese. My sand which was half empty.... I guess one very little egg and a bit of cheese, no butter but I guess we should have asked. Service took long it seemed and when we had been waiting for a little while already and thought the food was coming, a young lady came up to confirm the order. So waiting some more... The ambiance is cute except the loudest noisiest music that I found quite disturbing for enjoying food. Basically I don't recommend but different strokes for different folks. Love hero!! They have some of the best bagel sandwiches in Chicago. Their coffee and cafe drinks are also good and the portions are large. I like both their Sheridan location and Jackson location. You'll find different things on the menu at both though. For example, the Jackson location has sesame bagels and siracha cream cheese whereas the Sheridan location doesn't have either of those things. That could be just what was available this week but I'll update this review if they have both of those items at Sheridan soon. Sheridan is nice because there are indoor places to sit and eat. Jackson is only outdoor seating so it's great in the summer but definitely a to-go place in the winter. Overall, most definitely worth it no matter what Hero location you're at! read more

Stopped by here when I was in the area and had some time to kill and needed to knock out some work. Was pleasantly surprised with how spacious this place felt. Lots of table space, natural light, plugs, and even sitting room with a couch tucked away in the corner. There's a bathroom hidden near the front window which is pretty clean. WiFi password is located on a sign above the toppings/add-ons area. I got a pour over light roast coffee, which I wasn't incredibly impressed by. Overall the drink was decent and I have certainly had worse. Their menu seems fairly simple and they offer a few bites of food you can get, mainly consisting of bagels and breakfast sandwiches. Service is friendly and prices are ok for the area. Overall, I would give this place 4 stars, mainly for the work environment. Drinks here are decent but don't expect to be blown away. read more
