It's kind of a scene, and a fun and lively place to be....long lines form, you see your friends, hang out, etc. A town needs a soda fountain. I only stopped here one night while in town for the week, and I should've gone every night! Herrell's has delicious fresh homemade ice cream and home made fudge sauce. While there were a plethora of flavors and free tastes, I chose the mexican chocolate (chocolate with cinnamon) with hot fudge. I got the smallest size I could with hot fudge, and it was plenty. The ice cream was thick and rich with a nice kick of cinnamon, and the fudge was perfectly fudge-y even getting thick from the cold ice cream. I was pleased to see such a variety of sizes because this stuff is so good and rich that you don't need much! The line does get pretty long, but everyone was friendly and offered suggestions of their favorite flavors. read more

I love herrells. We are not from here so if we are within a half hour we try to make it happen. Their ice cream is absolutely wonderful but so is everything else on the menu- chocolate whipped cream, hot fudge, even their sprinkles are exceptional. My favorite flavors are the burnt sugar and brown butter, and any of the coffee flavors. Husband swears by black raspberry. I'm not sure you could get it wrong to be honest. They will let you try a taste- but when the line is long stick to one or two. Don't be "that guy". I also like the new remodel they have done. Much more accommodating for more people. read more

We were back in Northampton which means we were back at Herrell's...Twice in two days. I strictly monitored my food intake so I wouldn't feel bad about indulging. After the first day's feast (a classic hot fudge sundae with vanilla ice cream and pecans) I left with one question: HOW IS THIS STUFF SO GOOD? This place is mentioned in a magazine as one of the top 10 or 20 ice cream places in the US. ...I understand the ranking. They have a wide variety of ice cream and some sorbets and all are imaginative flavors. I am not sure I have ever had creamier ice cream. You can taste that everything here is high quality and freshly made. They also offer a wide variety of toppings too (great whipped cream, super hot fudge, sprinkles, jimmies, crushed candy, fruit and more). The decor is classic ice cream parlor and the location is on the bottom floor of Thornes Market in downtown Northampton. Prices are a little on the higher side (but we are talking ice cream here, not lobster thermidor ....) but not too high and totally worth it and good value. The service has always been good when I was there. Sometimes there is a line but it moves quickly. This place will always be worth the wait - if there is one. Herrell's is an institution. Everyone should go at least once. It's a great add on or part of a day checking out Noho. Enjoy. read more

The only reason this place isn't getting a five star rating is that they don't take credit cards. This Summer I ordered ice-cream for myself and a friend, they handed me my enormous cone, which was already dripping, and when I handed them my credit card they informed me of this. I did not have any cash (who the hell carries cash anymore, especially in expensive-ass Northampton?) but I did have a melting ice-cream cone in one hand and a useless credit card in the other. It's totally baffling. That aside, their ice-cream is SPECTACULAR. It's always creamy, full of flavor and chunks of whatever stuff you desire it to have chunks of in it. And the flavor-dipped cones would be a tasty snack by themselves. Filled with delicious ice-cream they're close to sexual. Don't be embarrassed if you have ice cream stains all over yourself when you leave. But remember...bring CASH! read more

Waited in line for twenty minutes for the most disgusting Chocolate Malted that I have ever had. The kid working had no idea how to make one and had to go to the office for the recipe. He turned out a mixture of chocolate ice cream, chocolate sauce, milk and a hint of malt powder that was sickening sweet. The staff could care less! I had to beg for some more milk just to make it palatable. I understand that you don't always hit a home run, but at least try and make it right if a patron is not satisfied. I was a fan of the original Steve's in Somerville, and was flabbergasted when I first saw it. You mean I can get anything I want, in any combination, mixed in to my ice cream? Woohoo! Like Oreo ice cream? Steve Herrell invented it. Transferring out to UMass in 1982, I discovered Herrell's, to my great delight. Having sold out of the business, Steve Herrell had just reentered it in Northampton, complete with a player piano (which was what he'd been manufacturing in the hiatus). It was wonderful thirty years ago and remains so today. Like some others, I mourn the loss of the Cambridge franchisee (there for decades, in an old bank, where the vault was painted to resemble the inside of an aquarium), but the original Herrell's is still here. I've been to Northampton a million times, even lived there for a summer, but I'm not sure I've ever been to Herrell's. My friend jokingly asked if I wanted to stop in for some ice cream, and of course I said yes. I'm a huge fan of anything minty and chocolatey and the closest thing they had was Mint Oreo. It and had a weird texture of what old ice cream has with pieces of ice in it. I can't be the only one who loves minty chocolatey ice cream?? I'm not sure what the big deal is about this place; I've had much better at off the road farm ice cream stands. I'm not saying I'd never go back, but I won't be rushing back next time I'm in town. read more

Man do I love ice cream, and Herrell's is the place to go. So many flavors they have to rotate them, and the quality is superb! I could barely contain myself the last time I went, it was so hard to choose without gorging and giving myself a stomach ache. I shared Mudpie (coffee ice cream with broken Hydrox cookies and fudge swirl), Malted Vanilla and Cinnamon Nutmeg with my boyfriend. I was sorely tempted by the infamous hot fudge, but I couldn't convince the bf. It was probably better that we didn't have it because otherwise the ice cream flavors would have literally been drowned out. And damn were they good! It was so disappointing when we finished them. I wish Herrell's existed where I live so that I could have their ice cream without having to make the trip up to Northampton, but with my sister living there now I have every excuse to visit her (and Herrell's). read more

Consistently fantastic ice cream that's more than worth waiting in line for. I love that they constantly change them up - I've gotten to try a ton of different flavors, and have loved every single one. Still, my absolute favorite is Cafe L'Orange. Whoever decided to add orange flavor to coffee ice cream is my new hero, since it truly is a match made in heaven. They don't have it all that often, which makes it even more of a treat when they do. Some other flavors that I've loved: almond cream, white russian, burnt sugar and butter, and pumpkin cheesecake. And there's nothing quite like going on your birthday and getting a giant sundae on the house. You get to pick two flavors and toppings, and have the world's best hot fudge and whipped cream (even with a choice of maple whipped cream if your birthday falls during the right season). Best hot fudge in the world? Quite possibly! We made a special trip after hearing about the hot fudge, and hoo boy was it worth the journey. The ice cream was really good but the hot fudge really was the star, dark and bitter chocolate perfectly suited to the sweet cream. The mister and I were both a little let down by the burnt sugar and butter ice cream, tasted a bit too much like maple. I enjoyed my malted chocolate and malted vanilla more, though the blueberry sauce was sickeningly sweet on my banana split and even the hamkey wouldn't eat it. The banana ice cream on the other hand was absolutely stupendous! Actual bananas, with cream and a little acidity to lighten the sweetness. The strawberry ice cream was wonderful too, the real thing. Herrell's is permanently on our must-do list next time we're in the area! read more

Does this place do anything wrong? Seriously. The ice cream, fudge and whipped cream are all homemade and some of the best stuff out there. The No-Moo, their dairy-free ice cream for those of us vegans and lactards, is just as good as their regular stuff. I just wish that the flavors for No-Moo were as imaginative as some of the regular ones (it's been REALLY difficult not to cheat on my dietary preferences), and that they served more than one or two No-Moo flavors at a time. Lines are often long but it's worth the wait. The establishment is crowded and noisy on weekend nights; get a medium size dish (or put it in a hand-dipped waffle cone!) or a small milkshake, split it with a friend or loved one, pay (you did remember to bring cash, right?), leave, and stroll Main Street or sit on the hill across the street. BEST. ICE CREAM. EVAH! srsly! No seriously, this is the guy who inspired Ben & Jerry, and basically invented the premium ice cream category. In fact, Steve Herrell INVENTED ice cream! Kidding, but he did invent the smoosh-in, so if you like that, then come here to where he invented it. He created a chain called Steve's, many years ago, and then sold it off. The new owners quickly diluted the premium ice cream which is what is was all about, and Mr. Herrell was so disgusted by it, he refused to have anything to do with them, then started over again in Northampton. This is the flag ship store, and more often than not, you'll find Mr. Steve Herrell himself here. He was there when we went in on Saturday. I had a chocolate ice cream, and WOW was it good. SO very rich and thick, it's like there is layer upon layer of chocolately goodness. Like deep, deep chocolate. If you are interested in tasting THE BEST ICE CREAM IN THE WORLD, then you should come here. Not everyone can handle the realness though. And if the weather is nice out, take your ice cream and sit outside on the retaining wall across the street for the perfect Northampton thing-to-do. P.S. A couple of summers ago, a Cold Stone Creamery opened up down the street. Within a month, it was gone, waving the white flag of surrender in the embarrassment of being in the vicinity of ice cream royalty. P.P.S. I'm baffled to see all these glowing reviews of Herrell's Ice Cream. Or maybe I'm just having a really bad foodie weekend in Northampton. I've been to Herrell's twice and couldn't finish what I ordered either time. The first time was this summer. A friend and I split one of their ice cream sandwiches. I don't remember the cookie but the ice cream was supposed to be blackberry. It barely had any fruit flavour but was overwhelmingly sweet. Even splitting it, we were unable to finish it. This weekend, enticed by their Earl Grey offering, I thought I'd give it another go. I sampled it and decided against it, immediately. There wasn't the faintest hint of Earl Grey or anything else besides butter for that matter. My friend decided to get a small scoop and though she finished it, she wondered if maybe her ice cream had been scooped from the wrong container. I got the peanut butter mud pie, which was better than anything else I've tried there. Again, it was very sweet and I couldn't finish a small scoop. My ice cream hopes have dwindled down to Atkins, Bart's, and Cook's. As an ice cream aficionado, I'm really hoping I'll have better luck there. read more

I always make a point to come to Herrell's when I come home and they never disappoint. They have a board of all the flavors, which changes daily so don't be surprised if one of the flavors you got last week isn't there the next week...but don't worry they always have 10 or so of the same staple flavors....I'm boring and always get the same flavor...which for some reason is slipping my mind right now (sorry!). Its coffee ice cream with oreo-ish cookies and fudge...yummy and always hits the spot. The ice cream is creamy and filled with cookies and fudge which goes to same for all of the flavors..Prices are a little bit on the pricier side, but thats because its all homemade...I always get the kiddie side which is one small scoop - the perfect size for an after dinner dessert. $1.50 ish.....Jimmies/Sprinkles are free and homemade so make sure you try them at least once! If you aren't craving ice cream, they also have soft serve yogurt, ice cream cakes, apple pie slices, and brownies...On the weekends, this place gets PACKED! Especially since it is in close proximity to most restaurants...Don't worry, the line goes by pretty quickly, be patient..Herrells is ALWAYS worth it. CASH ONLY!! read more

Oh Herrell's, one of the fondest memories I have of my good old hometown. The two Boston counterparts don't hold a candle to the original. Knowing people that worked here made me gain about 10 pounds in one summer. It loses a star only because I need someone other than myself to blame for the incident when a craving for Herrell's caused me to drive when I probably shouldn't have been, and then try to fit my car key into the door of someone else's car.
