This is the best pizza in Baltimore and it's not even close. I've been here three times and have gotten a margherita, an anchovy and a clam pie. They've all been delicious. The pizza isn't perfect, the dough is stretched too thin in the middle and it can get gloopy, but the flavor rivals anything I've had in NYC. The service and atmosphere are also top notch, as are the happy hour deals. I've been missing good pizza since I left New York and this definitely scratches the itch. read more

Love this place. The staff is friendly, the food is fantastic (bring back the gnocchi!), and the ambiance is nice. I've been here several times now and every time it is really AMAZING. The pizzas are really the big seller for me wanting to keep coming back here - my husband always loves the various meat pizzas, and I'm really torn which pizza I love more: the fumo y fuoco eggplant or kale & pistachio. Definitely also want to try the margherita. Can't rave about the pizzas enough! The calamari appetizer was decent (but may not order again w/ all the other good choices available!) and the ice cream dessert options were really good. The drinks are also great! read more

I can't speak to Hersh's food, but this review is based on Hersh's customer service. I went here on a Sunday night with my boyfriend. It was a nice night so we asked for an outdoor table. There were tables open outside and not that many people at the restaurant at the time we went. We were told that they could not seat us outside since there were only 2 of us and they had to save the 4 person tables outside for if groups of 4 people came to the restaurant. We left immediately afterwards and they didn't try to accommodate our request. I'm not sure why they wouldn't seat us outside since we were 2 people ready and willing to pay for their food. Very poor customer service in my opinion. Which is pretty disappointing as I'd heard good things about their food. read more

We find ourselves in downtown Baltimore about ounce a month and each time we are able to dine at Hersh's we try something new and are always pleased. My husband and I enjoy going with another couple so that we can share several of the small plates. This time around, for starters, it was the Local Heirloom Tomatoes and chicken Milanese that we ordered. The homemade foccacia that the heirloom tomato dish was served on was delicious and the pan fried chicken was cooked to perfection. As much as we love the pizza at Hersh's, we decided to share two pasta dishes - Bucatini Carbonara and Housemade Tagliolini with Littleneck Clams - and both were outstanding. Our server added to the enjoyment of our evening. She was very pleasant and attentive. read more

My wife and I went here on one of our rare nights out after hearing about their homemade pasta. We were happy we did. It was 8pm on a Saturday before Christmas. When we arrived it was pretty busy, but there was still room to seat us. The atmosphere was relaxing and laid back, but what I really wanted to find out about was the pasta. To my surprise, gnocchi was on the menu. My favorite! Long story short: This was the best gnocchi I have had. Everything we ordered was good, but I cant get past how good the gnocchi was. This place is amazing. I love the atmosphere, the service, and most of all the food! The menu is always changing and while I might miss some things I've had in the past but I'm never disappointed about the new things that they add and I'm always finding new favorites. The kale and pistachio pizza is my favorite thing on the menu! Such a fabulous combination!! The ambiance is really nice and relaxing but I was disappointed with the food. I had heard great things about this restaurant and was excited to try the wood fire pizza. The margarita pizza was super soggy with so little cheese you couldn't really taste it. The sauce was bitter. My daughter couldn't eat it due to the overly burnt taste. The Caesar salad was ok and could have used more flavor. The wood fire cauliflower was really good. I'm glad I tried it but it's probably not worth a second trip. read more

The special for $5 for the beer is really a gimmick. You are getting 2 8 oz beers for $45...not much of a special. Decided to spend our Valentines at Hersh this year since we live so close. Good thing we do because the place was packed! I am so glad we made reservations ahead of time. When we arrived we were greated by a nice young lady who sat us. Our server was very nice we ordered drinks which took longer than last time to received but our server reassured us it was because it was Valentines day. I ordered PINK fettucine which was delicious. My husband enjoyed the Chicken Milanese which was on a sandwhich... We thought odd at first but he loved it ao much we got take out from them yesterday! I did notice the meatballs taste a bit different then last time we were there. This time they tasted smoky ot was a nice twist. For dessert I ordered the dohnut which was shaped like a heart with PINK filling! I am so glad we live so close to such an authentic place! Our server was so kind she didnt make us feel rushed to get out of there due to how busy they were. We were able to sit back and relax while we enjoyed our wonderful meal. read more

We came here with a group of four on a weds night (unaware that it was half priced wine night). The ambiance of this place is romantic and well done. We ordered cocktails that were over priced and not strong. Not that I'm into a stiff drink but if you order a craft cocktail it should be balanced in flavors but these were not. They had too much of the mixers and not enough of the alcohol. We wound up getting a bottle of wine when we got to the table and it was an inexpensive red. We all agreed it was very good and went perfectly with our food. For dinner we shared the prosciutto balls which were okay but their marinara sauce that they were paired with was delicious. My fiancé and I shared a pizza that had kale and pistachios on it. It was very tasty but too salty. That would be my only complaint about it. The dough was flavorful and cooked nicely (the middle was a little moist). Our friend ordered a fish entrée that was small and flavorless. Not the place to get fish. I'd stick with pizza here. Overall the service was slow. The bartender was knowledgeable and engaging. The server at the table was not. We will probably return at some point. read more

Located on the Fed Hill side of Riverside park this cozy, but classy restaurant is a great spot for delicious pizza and great drinks. Make a reservation if you don't want to wait or sit at the bar. A friend and I walked in around 8pm on a Friday night. Most of the tables were empty, but when we asked for a table for 4 we were told all the tables are reserved. We snagged the last 2 seats at the bar while we waited for our 2 other friends to arrive. Started of with beer (decent selection) paired with a shot of whiskey. Once our friends showed up, we crowded in the corner of the bar. The staff didn't mind that 2 of us were standing, which was nice so we didn't have to leave. Eventually the 2 seats next to us opened up so we were all able to sit. We ordered a the Il Ridicolo pizza, Da Funghi, and Coppa Cabana. All the pizza tasted delicious and were just about enough for us to share between 4 people. They are a little bigger than your typical personal sized pizzas, so a 4th one would have resulted in some leftovers (never a bad thing). The only complaint is the greasiness of the pizzas. Over all the food is great and the service was good, I will definitely be back... Great place for date night! read more

Ever since I moved back to Fed Hill I have been told multiple times I have to stop into Hersh's. So after 2 months of my schedule not meshing well with their odd hours of business, I finally got to check it out last evening. Now this was a quick drop in to get carry out after a long day of football. All I wanted was a pizza and get back to my place. I sat down at the bar and was immediately greeted by a very cute bartender. She welcomed me to the place and recognized it was my first time in. She explained the menu and got me a beer while I pondered what I wanted to get. I ended up getting a pizza of her recommendation. I'm unsure of the exact name but it had garlic (holy garlic Batman did it have garlic) prosciutto and a few other tasty items. The pizza overall was not bad but here is what I'm not a fan of "uncut...like Naples"...well I don't live in Naples, I live in America and I would like my pizza cut so that it is not a struggle to take what I want. Also, the pizza was very soggy in the center. Secondly, the size was small and the price was big. Now I might be biased after living in NYC for the past 4 years but $15 buck even in NYC gets you a little bit more pizza! Overall, I'm just not getting this place and why people are raving about it. Service is great, pizza taste okay (not bad but not great) but weird hours and a tad overpriced in my opinion. Lastly, I find it strange that there is two pizza bars within a block of each other that are this far down Light St. HomeSlyce in my opinion has a much better selection, better prices, better crowd and definitely the best tasting pizza in Baltimore...and I think they won the pizza battle recently. I will have to stick with HomeSlyce and wish that Rub would come back! read more

We went to Hersh's last Saturday night. I actually did not know it had opened until I stumbled upon it a few weeks ago, so I was excited to try it out. The atmosphere is great and I think they really nailed the menu. The menu is fairly small but well thought out. The drink menu was great as well. Plenty of good beers on tap and in bottles, and the wine list had many wines by the glass. We started with the prosciutto balls and the whipped ricotta crostini. :::Now here's my only complaint!::: There were four of us at the table. The crostini came out with four small pieces of bread and enough dip for a loaf of bread. So, we asked for more...THEY CHARGED US FOR THE EXTRA BREAD. To add insult to injury, they additional order of bread included only three pieces. For dinner we each had a pizza, all of which were delicious. The food overall was very good and we enjoyed ourselves. So, we'll be back. But they need to fix this bread situation. It doesn't make any sense and we found it to be offensive. read more

I love this pizza place, and I'm so glad I live nearby to be able to get delicious pizza all the time. They have an outdoor section, but it's always been filled when I stop by during nice weather, so I can't comment on that. Their bar inside is spacious and I've seen lots of people there for happy hour. I've loved the pizza every time, and they even have a cheese-free pizza on their menu (some people scoff at this, but since my boyfriend is lactose intolerant, we love this place even more). I'm not a huge drinker, but their cocktails are superb as well. I've been tempted several times to order one (and finish it) due to a creative list of ingredients. The dessert here is also wonderful, each portion has been large enough to share, but small enough that you don't have to if you don't want to! Coming from someone who regularly visits NYC and has had plenty of delicious pizza there, this place is worth a visit and keeping in the rotation. read more

We went here a few times last summer and absolutely loved the place. The pizza was great, the service was excellent, and the vibe of the restaurant was really nice. Returned for the first time in a year over the weekend and were really disappointed to find that the pizza just wasn't what it used to be. The crust was overly chewy and not crisp underneath as it had been before. That being said, our waitress was excellent and very attentive. She knew the ingredients of every item on the menu, which was helpful as we were dining with a friend with allergies. Overall, I'm a little bummed to see the quality of the pizza slide a bit, but it's still a good option when in Federal Hill. read more

So disappointed with hersh's. I had been here before and had a good experience but tonight nothing about it was good. Our food took over an hour to arrive (no apologies or acknowledgment from the waitress) and when we finally got it the kale and pistachio pizza was way too salty with a very hard crust. The cheese was hardened as well, not soft by any means. My boyfriend's pasta did not have pieces of meat in the sauce it as it was supposed to. We told the waitress and instead of bringing a new dish, she came back 10 minutes later with some extra sauce that did have the meat in it. The pasta was cold by then. Hersh's is the upscale Italian restaurant that Fed Hill needs. The cocktail menu is fantastic, full of forgotten classics like the sidecar and negroni. The drinks are expertly crafted and a nice change from the standard SoBo beer drink lists. The anchovy fritters are awesome and the clam pizza is delicious. Service was very attentive with all the right touches (pouring drinks from shaker to glass at the table, bringing fresh bowl of crushed red pepper just prior to serving pizzas). I will definitely be back at Hersh's again! read more

First, I loved the food. The meatball and mushroom apps were simply delicious. The three of us each ad our own pizza and the rustic crust, excellent sauce and great ingredients tasted divine but, and you knew it was coming, put up some textiles! We ate on the second floor, no bar up there but the tin ceiling and open hard surfaces made the place an echo chamber! Things may have been less cacophonous downstairs but Madre' Dios! We sat in the middle against the wall and there was a table of woman in the far corner, obviously having a great time but we were 30 feet away and had to shout across the table to have a conversation. The staff was terrific, very helpful attentive and engaging. Each one we met was just terrific and motivated to please but the ownership needs to do something about dampening the raucousness of the echo chamber on the second floor. I'll eat there again but unless something changes, it will be carry out. read more

The pizza is a little expensive, but the quality is good. The crust is chewy and you can tell the ingredients are quality. Proscuitto balls are a great appetizer, as is the fried calamari. They fry some kind of pepper with the calamari, and those bites were delicious. The best pizza I have tried is Abruzzo (house made sausage and broccoli raab). read more

We had an engagement party for our daughter and her fiance on Sunday, 10/25/15 at Hersh's. We had a party of 18 so we were given the upstairs room and our own server. "C" was our server and was beyond exceptional! The room was quaint and nicely done. We had personalized menus with Congratulations to the newly engaged couple at the top of the menu (nice personal touch). The menus listed our food (broken down into categories as they were served that way also; hot and fresh) and beverage selections (which included some very nice cocktails that were mixed to perfection). For most of us, it was our first visit to Hersh's and we LOVED it from beginning to end. Highly recommend this treasure of a restaurant; we will surely visit again! read more

The ravioli =delicious. Apple cider donut dessert =yummy. The pizza =average. Oh, and they don't cut the pizza for you--and don't offer you appropriate utensils to do so yourself. A new (dumb) hipster trend??? I hope not. They call it "flatbread" so they can charge you more. These upscale hiptser places are a dime a dozen in Baltimore. No reason to drive to Fed Hill. Find a pizzeria closer to home--preferably once that cuts the pizza for you. read more

I have no idea why this place gets the 5 star reviews it gets...we didn't think the pizza very good at all. We heard how wonderful the pizza was and we took family up from Virginia on a Tuesday and discovered it is closed on Tuesdays. The second time we went, the hostess said we needed a reservation...thgough there were plenty of tables available. Parking can be almost impossible and we weren't going to give it a third try, but we did based on what someone else told about how great the food is. Made a 7:30 reservation on a Monday night and got seated no problem. They have pizza, and "small plates" of food that isn't bad, but rather expensive for what you get. The pizza is kind of a brick oven pizza, but it is very thin crust (which I like) but very soggy (which I don't). One of the "small plates" we had was like a breaded deep fried butter squash with a cheese in it and honey that was about the size of a McDonalds breakfast hash browns- $7.00 for that thing. It was good, it was spicy, but $7.00? And, as I said before, we didn't care for the pizza. The staff was very friendly but we have no clue what people see in it. I think we gave it an honest look but it isn't a place we will go back too. I would definitely give it a try since my opinion is far from the the norm and I guess chances are you will like it. But if you like a brick oven pizza with a thin crisp crust...uh..this isn't it. But if you like a large outer crust with a thin and large soggy/mushy center benieth the toppings (the only part of the crust not soggy was the outer crust), then this is the pizza for you. read more

I'm going with 3 stars instead of 4 because I felt like there was a lot of room for improvement. That being said, we will most definitely return to see if it was just an off night. Here's the good and the bad...My boyfriend and I went to Hersh's on a Friday night. It wasn't readily obvious where the free garage parking was, so that was a little annoying, but we found street parking instead. We had 7pm reservations and were seated promptly upon arrival (next to the front door, which wasn't ideal considering there were other tables open at the time and they ended up being given to people without reservations who arrived after us). Even though our reservation was for 7pm and Happy Hour ends at 7pm, our waitress offered us the Happy Hour specials for our first round. My boyfriend ordered 2 of the 10oz. Bell's and was very pleased. I ordered the 9oz. Morellino Sangiovese and was also very pleased. To start we ordered Papa's Meatballs, which were delicious, but warm at best. I would go so far as to say they were room temperature. And the house made ricotta was served cold on top. We would have loved to experience the "hot and cold" potential that dish could have offered. The meatballs did have great flavor though. We also ordered the Tuscan Kale Salad to start. This was amazing! Everything about it was perfect. For our meals we ordered the Pappardelle and the Il Rosso pizza. The Pappardelle was perfection. House made noodles were delicious - not too thick and not too floury. The veal was fork tender and the aged balsamic added the perfect about of acidity to the dish. The pizza was...eh. The broccoli rabe stems were tough, which made them difficult to bite and even cut through. The dough was very thin and soggy in the center of the pizza. This made it hard to handle/eat/enjoy. The best part about the pizza was the sausage and the crispy crust. Finally for dessert, I ordered the Cinnamon ice cream and devoured every last drop. It was delicious. read more

this is an awful restaurant. we ordered a pasta concoction that included lobster. the lobster "stickles" were the size of string beans. ..all for eighteen dollars. chef Boyardee in the can is better. the pizza is dry, bland and tasteless. the waitress literally took our water glasses out of our hand before we could decide to leave. I realize she wanted to turn the table and that is how a living is made in these places, but no one wants to feel like they are in the army mess hall and being rushed. what was worse was a follow up phone call to the owner Josh Hershkovitz who was "insulted" at my complaint. he offered twenty dollars for me to try again. when I told him a relative might want to try it and I might give the card to him,josh reneged on his offer. the lobster dish is not on the current menu. if a dish is a success it does not leave a menu. I warn you as I have many others to not go there. parking is a bear.the other owner Stephanie , Josh's sister, was unresponsive when I told her how bad our waitress was. read more
