The Hertz location is an independent licensee, so we didn't get the usual service we get from Hertz. First of all, when we rent with her CDP, we automatically get full coverage in the rate. Not so here. Even though our rental amount was about $6/day US, the full coverage insurance was $57/day US. Seriously! After we spent about 30-40 minutes at the counter, renting our car, we were sent to another desk where a gentleman offered us $100 off our car rental and free tickets to Isla Mujeres and Tulum if we took a 90-minute tour of a hotel in Cancun. We asked if it was a time share presentation and we were assured that it wasn't. "They just want you to see the hotel so that you stay there next time." That was all lies. It was a vacation club presentation and it was 3 whole hours and a lot of sales pressure. But, we got the $100 off our car and our tickets. Then, when we returned the car, it was another 30 minutes or so. The shuttle drivers both coming and going were very helpful and great. read more

I never ever write reviews and this will be my first review ever. Let me start with these words: CON ARTISTS/SCAMMERS. We arrived at the airport where a Hertz representative called us over and offered a vehicle for 150$ (for 5 days) which included insurance and gps. We asked over and over to really confirm the $150 all inclusive deal which they confirmed. We didn't have to pay right away. They said once we return the car to pay with the credit card. After seeing a ton of harsh reviews I had to weigh in and say this was a pleasant, normal rental car experience. The airport counter staff were extremely friendly and got me right over to the rental car area. Check in was very slow with seemingly endless signatures and a hefty deposit ($1500 USD hold on my credit card). I very, very thoroughly checked over the rental car when I got it per the other horror stories on Yelp. I must have written down about 20 defects on the exterior of the car, but the inspection person was very patient with me. At the end when returning the car the staff only did a cursory review of the car and that was that! The charge was what I was originally quoted - and by the way, $30 USD for 3 days rental is hard to complain about! Only deducting a star because it was a little over the top how slow it was to get the car and pay my final bill. Would appreciate a little faster service from the location, especially compared to US Hertz Gold where you don't even interact with a counter agent. read more

We had an quick and easy experience renting the vehicle - shuttle to and from the terminal - but outside of that, our experience was similar to others: they rip you off with hidden payments/dishonest statements about the process. We rented from Hertz at Cancun airport for 8 years in a row at the same time every year. Prices went up exorbitantly in that time. While prices also varied greatly from what the quoted price was, we stayed with them just for the convenience. Never again. This last time they passed us through inspection and when we were at the window checking out someone came and said they found a problem. A rock was stuck UNDER the front bumper. There is no way we did this, we actually only ended up driving to our condo and back the entire trip. It wasn't even visable on the first inspection. I'm guessing that rock sees a lot of action. More importantly, they took our original contract (which you have to present to them), brought out a new one, and gave that to us...with charges for things we hadn't approved. It took so much time we were worried about catching flight. The man in the window said we didn't have to sign the CC receipt if we were planning on having our CC insurance policy file. We filed case with our CC company and Hertz sent them copies of documents they had created and not the original one we had signed so we were denied our claim. FWIW, there was another person going through this same scenario while we were waiting in line as well. This place has turned scammer. Avoid. read more

PLEASE, PLEASE take this and other negative reviews seriously and stay away from Hertz From the time I reached Hertz rental center, it took me an hour and 20 minutes to leave with the car. It was the same for every customer. I was harassed for denying to accept collision coverage and they were constantly trying to sell me accessories such as coolers and lockers to be used at beach. After I signed the contract, it took them 30 minutes to get the car ready. All I wanted was the liability insurance- I was quoted $13 at the time of booking the reservation. However the Hertz center refused to sell me liability insurance as a stand-alone. They will only sell it along with road side service and other protection which costed me $26 per day. I was told that if I purchased the collision, I can get the liability insurance alone, otherwise I will have to buy it with other add-one for $26. We went as a family with young kids and having made to wait for 80 minutes to get the car is nothing but harassment. This is the last time I am renting from Hertz. I chose Hertz over other rental agencies due to its reputation as a premium rental agency, but it turned out to be just the opposite read more

First of all, online booking was smooth . Online it was a great price. Then I arrived to pick up the car. Everything went smooth received my car, was offered additional coverage for the car. I thought , well, better safe than sorry. I figured I could crash comfortably . The girl behind the counter told me it would be $15 additional for the insurance, and that came with road side assistance, and a free upgrade. I messed up by taking her word without reading the contract and simply signing it. I know it's my fault at this point , but after taking 3 flights with my wife and wild 5yo I was exhausted by the time I got there. Anyhow, after a several days of R&R I decided to look at my contract, that's when I realized that I was going to be charged for road side assistance, and the upgrade on the vehicle. I was dropping off the car at another location, I told them what happed, but all they could say is sorry, you signed the contract. They had nothing to do with it, so I didn't give them a hard time. At the end of my day, it's my fault for not taking the time to look at the contract, and taking that liars word. So, if you ever rent a car from Hertz, please take the time to read your contract and make sure you understand it. Whether it's the wording, or pricing. Convert the pesos to dollars and see if it matches (market fluctuation) or comes close to what you were guaranteed when reserved. Something is wrong with Hertz in Cancun. I made a reservation for a car about 20 minites from the airport in the hotel zone. Finally got to the location and they quite simply said the reservation doesnt exist despite the email documentation and rebuttled with it must have been some "error". 1) Employee lied to me in order to get me to pay more, explaining that i would be jailed in Mexico if i were to get into a car accident in which another person was injured and i was without the 3rd party liability insurance. Which of course cost be extra money to purchase. 2) I was persuaded not to use the expedia car insurance that i had already paid money for, saying that i would not be able to just walk away if there was an accident and that i would have to stay in Mexico to deal with all of the legal problems it would cause. 3) I was stopped at the door by someone trying to sell me a resort trip at DREAMS a resort owned by the Hertz owner. The only way to get this employee to stop hassling us was to pay him 200 pesos and tell him we would go to an hour and a half long presentation at Dreams in order to get free tickets to the Ruins of Tulum, and get 2000 pesos off our rental car, which was already insanely expensive. We basically had to Pay this man to let us leave Hertz so we could get on our way before it turned night time. We had a long drive so we chose to Pay him so we could leave. 4) The car had only 1/4 tank of gas so we had to fill up immediately, we should have kept a receipt because when we returned the car they told us we were not he hook for the full and it was there word against ours. read more

Bad Experience! After waiting in a very slow-moving line at the Hertz agency at the Cancun airport for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, we were given a nearly-new Dodge Attitude to rent for a 3-day vacation. The engine was left running after being driven to where we were waiting, while we closely examined it for preexisting damage. We drove directly to our hotel, and turned off the engine in front of the hotel to unload our bags and check in. That's when the trouble began. When we went to move the car to the parking lot, it would not start. It had a keyless ignition system, and the remote you carry around with you apparently did not work, possibly due to a dead battery. The buttons to lock and unlock the doors, and to open the trunk didn't work either, and the little LED on the remote didn't flash when the buttons were pushed. We could not figure out how to start the engine, and there was no owner's manual. The valet and concierge tried to help, but couldn't figure it out either. The Hertz customer service phone number on our rental form to call is a computerized voice system that is all in Spanish, which we do not speak. The concierge of the Presidente Intercontinental was great, and called the company for us. He went back and forth with the company for at least 3 hours. The company said they would call back after they talked to their manager a few times, but would never call back. So we would call again. The company kept insisting we must have gotten the remote wet and would charge us for the damage. Always TURN THE CAR OFF AND RESTART IT yourself before leaving the lot! They eventually sent someone out to take a look at the car, and that person could not get the car started either. They were then going to send a tow truck, but claimed they did not have a replacement car for us. My husband went online and figured out how to get the car started manually. If the remote is placed into a certain unmarked slot in the center console, the engine will start even if the battery in the remote is dead. We kept the car and started it that way for the rest of the vacation just because our trip was so short. We did not want to spend a half a day returning the vehicle and finding a new car rental company. It is a very slow process to rent a car at Hertz and we thought it may be just as long to return the vehicle and complain. At the end of our vacation, we returned the car at the airport Hertz where we rented the car and they had the mechanic look at it. They had records of the last renter having the same problem so they did not charge us for a damaged key. They did not offer us a discount for wasting our first evening of our vacation or for the stress it caused. read more

How to get overcharged at Hertz Cancún. 1) let them tell you your insurance costs in dollars rather than in MX pesos, which is what you are paying. If you do let them quote a price in US dollars, don't ask them what exchange rate they are using. In my case the document I signed was using a rate of 22 pesos to the dollar, but the current rate now is around 15.5 pesos per dollars. I agreed to a price of US$43, but I'm paying 1/3 more than that. Shame on me. 2) let them charge the equivalent of US$33 to get GOLD checkout and drive you to the terminal which is 1 mile away 3) pay US$5 a day for roadside assistance. 4) to recoup part of your money, agree to visit the good people of Unlimited Vacation Club if a sales rep accosts you at hertz in the guise of giving you directions. Agree to a "free" breakfast at Dream resort and to give up 90 minutes (or more) of your vacation time. Hold out for a promise of 3000 mx pesos (or more) for showing up. Oh, and give the guy at hertz US$50 in cash to guarantee that you will show up. If you go, as I did, enjoy the sales pitch and you will, indeed, get your promised cash back and a few thousand pesos. You may incidentally buy into a vacation marketing scheme - not a timeshare! - that you don't need, but that's your decision. Enjoy your visit to Hertz. Don't look for me there again. Hertz agents at Cancun Airport engage in deception and Hertz backs them up! I pre-booked by $6 per day reservation via wisecars (Reservation number: 92059760) and prepaid 50% of my rental through them $15.00 US. This was never credited to my bill. This is minor compared to why I am contacting you today. At the time of pick up, I declined the damage waiver. Understand that I use a Chase Sapphire Reserve travel card which covers 100% of damage, deductible, etc for up to $75000 US when renting passenger vehicles. Obviously, I ALWAYS decline such add-on coverage. The agent confirmed saying "zero deductible". Concerned by the use of "zero", I replied that I want "no deductible waiver". He responded that he indeed understood and proceeded with the transaction never quoting waiver cost verbally or pointing it out on the agreement. When he processed my credit card it was for an obscene amount. When I challenged this he said it was a "deposit/hold" and the actual bill would be settled upon return. OK, whatever. Fast forward to my return. They presented a bill for $10205 MXN!! Apparently, he added the deductible waiver after all. I almost lost my mind. I went back to the check-out counter and they said there was "nothing they could do" since it was over 5 days?? Anyway, a 5 day $6 daily rental is now on my credit card for $549.44 US in addition to the $15 I had already paid that has yet to be credited. After my $15 deposit this bill should be no more than $25 after taxes. Hertz refuses to fix this and didn't even give me credit for the pre-payment. read more

I have never left a review on yelp but this place is a total SCAM. We arrived at 2:30 and our reservation was sent up for two cars at 2pm. They told us they cancelled our reservation because we were late!? And when we pleaded with them to let us pay for the vehicle we reserved they made us wait for almost 3 hours. We requested to finally speak with the General Manager, Antonio Guerra, who was the most unprofessional and unpleasant person we have ever experienced. He was rude and scary and said our only option was to pay for a more expensive vehicle. They even give you a bag of goodies for "free". Once you return the car they say the gas is below one line and they charge for the full tank. When we just recently filled it with gas. Worst rental experience EVER. I am a Hertz Gold customer and even that didn't help. Nobody at the rental counter at the airport, so had to chase down a bus outside. (Turns out they are not in-terminal in Cancun airport despite what the website says). Then even though I booked through Hertz website, and had called to confirm that my insurance covers in Mexico, they spent 30 minutes trying to upsell me on insurance. Finally they gave up although charged a higher deposit. Then after loading all the bags in the car, the keys were no where to be found. So after accusing me of stealing the keys, and having me empty my pockets, they then spent another 30 minutes looking until finally they decided to bring another car around. So well over an hour after arriving to the hertz office we finally were on our way. Upon return, their was no staff in return lane, so had to go inside and chase people down to come inspect the car. Then despite the fact that there was no damage and full tank of gas, the bill was 25% higher than the email-confirmed price, supposedly because of extra taxes. After making a reservation with Hertz for a week in Cancun I read some really horrible reviews of both Hertz and Avis there on Yelp. I hardly slept the night before my trip worrying about all the bad things that were bound to happen with this rental. My experience couldn't have been more different! I got a new Dodge Attitude and the charges at the turn-in were exactly as explained at pickup. There was about $100 of taxes that did not show in the Hertz online reservation summary but they were all from various local jurisdictions that all want a cut of the tourist business, not really different from the U.S. A few tiny smudges and scratches were photographed by the agent at pickup and the file was emailed to me the same day. A traveling companion had made his reservation with a lower-cost local company, Nu-Rental, but cancelled in favor of a shuttle bus when the rental tried to triple his charges. No Problema!! We rented a car for $70.00 US with taxes and insurance, from Saturday to Saturday. This was negotiated at the desk inside the the airport just outside of baggage claim area. We had reserved a car with National at the desk next to Hertz but no one was there and the Hertz rep was willing to make a deal. He wrote up the quote on a white slip, we got into their shuttle to the rental office. Absolutely no problems. Might be a good idea to video the rental experience too. I asked if I would be charged to include my wife as a driver, the attendant said no, we were charged for every day we had the vehicle rented. I asked if what I was initialing was declining the insurance, he said yes, we were charged for everyday a maximum coverage. My car broke down and would not go faster than 45 km/hr and I requested a replacement vehicle to which they did give me a replacement vehicle that had less gas in the tank than the broken down vehicle, yep, I was charged the difference in gas tank amounts to the full extent. Hertz cancun airport is probably the worst rental car experience in the world. We have rented cars in dozens of countries and I have never experienced the types of scam we have here. First year we rented and they actually had our car, but it too two hours to get it between all of the upselling of insurance, gas, etc, then they tried to force us to upgrade the car size, then told us our car wasn't available so we had to upgrade. The second year (renting again I thought I could navigate it better) we showed up and they would not even honor our reservation. Our reservation was for $300 and they said they would not rent a car for less than $1,000. They are complete scam artists. I notified Hertz corporate and they did absolutely nothing. They don't accept cash and the only way to avoid the 4.5 is to use your debate card which will then charge you a foreign transaction fee. I'm sure they do this on purpose. Just got back from cancun and even after reading all the negative yelp reviews I decided to take a chance on hertz at the airport. Glad I did. We had no problems what so ever. The shuttle was at the main airport gate and took us immediately to their storefront. There was no wait and the employee was quite friendly and finished the paperwork in about 10 minutes. He then directed us to go thru a door where we would be given the car. But, along the way we were stopped by another extremely friendly employee who was giving us a lot of tourist information with a map. But then, he hit us with the time share opportunity of a lifetime if we could spare a couple hours on one of our vacation days. We kindly said no thanks and ended that conversation. Once we got outside another employee met us with the car and walked me around the entire car and showed me every ding, scratch and dent that was on the car and we both agreed those were the only damages. after our vacation was over I took the car back with no issues and we were out of there in about 10 minutes. I would have given them 5 stars except for the timeshare speil. Beware of the cops in cancun. Every rental car has "TRS" as part of the license plate so they are well aware you are a tourist. As we were driving back to the airport with luggage clearly visible and the "TRS" on our plate I was pulled over for "speeding" yet I was in heavy airport traffic. Of course I didn't argue with the cop. He threatened to write me a ticket and take my drivers license unless I would like to settle it right then and there for $80.00. I was able to negotiate it down to $40.00. Just be careful around them cops. read more

The worst experience ever from the very beginning! They tried to overcharge you in all aspects. They have a ridiculous exchange rate 1:21.5 (Peso:USD), which typically should be 1:19.5. Since our reservation was made in USD (I believe which is common), we paid extra $40 USD in total because of the rate. When we returned the car, they tried to charge us because of two black dots on the side. We indeed took pictures when we picked up the car. But that side was missed. We have pictures showing that there were black dots in front of the car. The manager Janet showed us a picture way before we picked up the car and argued that we did the damage. When I pointed out the date of the picture, she agreed not to charge us but said she believed we did the damage since if not, we would have taken the picture of that side. How insane and rude! Since an hour has passed, we just left off as soon as we could. BE AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. I feel better when seeing the other reviews that mention this place is not a real Hertz. read more

Normally a car is ready for me to take when I get there. When I came to the location to pickup car , nothing was ready they confirmed they had my reservation but told me I needed to see a counter agent. This guy tried to up-sell me ( kept push insurance I looked at there screen it even says upsell) total scam artist, everything kept telling me the car was coming in 5 minutes. When I told him I wasn't interested in anything he told me I need to put a $1500 deposit. For the rental. I asked for the manager. he brought another rep, asked for his card he didn't have one, he turned his ID badge around. Very shady. He told me well you got to low of rate we need to charge you more it's just business. I finally accepted the deposit, they took 45 minutes to bring a car. Terrible way to start a vacation. read more

Shuttle from airport terminal to Hertz was quick and easy. Hertz has a beautiful facility. So far, so good. But then... Agents at Hertz Cancun are trained to pressure travelers into signing up for expensive insurance - against damage to the car, mainly. But also they try to get customers to sign up for pre-paid gas fill-up, even when customer says he will return the car full. I refused these offerings, but still ended up paying 20% over the original quote. One reason: "Transaction Fee 4.5%," which wasn't in the quote. The rental rate itself was 13% over the quoted price. The car, VW Vento, is billed as a full-size car, but is significantly smaller than full-size cars in the USA. Getting the car took an inexplicably long time. The car performed well during our 800+ mile trip, but was delivered with a dirty windshield (inside and out) and no windshield washer fluid. I'm tempted to say I would never rent from these people again, but all the car rental agencies in Mexico are crooks. You pick the least rotten apple from a barrel of rotten apples, and that might just be Hertz. read more

I have rent car with Hertz many times in U.S and always had good experience. I didn't even think more and picked Hertz in Cancun airport. It was horrified. Worst experience ever. I should have read the reviews before I made the reservation. The lady sales in her 30's first asked us if we have debit card. I said NO. Then she said we need to buy insurance in order to meet legal requirement in Cancun. Then, she used old style carbon copy credit card scanner scanned my credit card and asked me to sign it which doesn't have any dollar amount, a blank sheet! Even we could pay additional for insurance, however asking me to sign a blank credit card sale sheet really pissed me off. Thinking again overall conversation, I can tell the lady trying to scam from very beginning and try to scam big!!! So, we decided not to rent the car. Then when I am back to the State, they rejected my refund request. Because they said I used the reservation and picked up the car. It is a lie. The reservation was made via Expedia. I called again Expedia customer support and they called Hertz to make refund for me. Previously I called Expedia right away in Cancun after I went out of Hertz's office in Cancun to cancel the reservation. I am so glad I didn't sign anything , and I booked through Expedia. Expedia's customer service is excellent! In fact, Expedia's insurance already covered lability insurance in Cancun. Hertz knew it and just tried to squeeze more money.
