Out of all the major car agencies, Budget is the one that I've probably used the most for personal…read moreuse. It is one of the 4 car agencies that Costco travel uses, and like the other times we used them, it turned out just fine. Budget started out in 1958, and became part of the Avis Budget Group in 2002. It has over 1,300 locations in the U.S., with quite a few outside of airports (where the cost can be lower). This location in Lihue is part of the airport complex, within walking distance of the airport curb, but also providing frequent shuttle service. I booked a week rental (since once you pass 4 days, it is just as cheap to rent for a week) through Delta Travel this time (mainly to get matching MQDs), and didn't have to prepay. Using a Sapphire Reserve credit card meant getting primary collision/comprehensive insurance automatically. Budget does not charge for a second driver if spouse, and doesn't require their identification. Thus, I took off after deplaning, to see if I could beat the rush of people to get in line. Ended up walking to the location with luggage: wouldn't recommend it, just better to take the frequent shuttle. There were 3-4 associates working the counter, but the car rental just takes time so ended up waiting in line for a bit. My fastbreak number did not transfer through, as I later found out, so not standing in the fastbreak line was the right call. My biggest issue was that after I was done checking in, was told to wait at the curb for the car to be brought to me in 5-10 minutes. Ended up being almost 40 minutes...just wish I had been told that upfront. Got a Chevy Impala, which ended up being a good car for the week, as long as you stay on paved roads. Returning the car was similar to other busy locations: the check-in folks couldn't keep up with returns, so just told us to leave the key and go (didn't ask us any questions). I'm always hesitant about doing this (just feel better if I can get a receipt stating that I returned it on-time, and full)...but there really isn't much choice. I did get a receipt about 1 hour after the return, with the charged price being about $4 over the quoted. The shuttle driver to the terminal was pleasant and helpful, which made the last interaction with Budget being an agreeable one.

I asked for leather seats since I have a condition where I have pain with sitting if the seats are not tilted upward and solid like a leather seat. There were only upholstery seats when I went outside to look so I came back inside to talk to Chiobhan. She went and found a leather seated car that had just been returned and said it'll take 15 minutes to clean which we were fine with. When the Mazda CX-50 car came out, we got in and took off but after about a mile or two, I was having pain because the seat was not very good and didn't tilt upward. So we turned around and went back in the parking lot and I was greeted by Alan and told him I'm having pain and I'm willing to upgrade for a better car. As I was heading back to the office, I saw a higher model Mazda CX-90 AWD and sat inside it and it was really nice and the leather seats were more firm and tilted back like I needed. I took a picture of the license plate and told them this is the one I wanted. They said no problem but I need to pay an upgrade for you and I said I'm happy to. Both Chiobhan and Alan we're super friendly and no nonsense and were quick to respond and take care of business with a high-level of customer service and in a very timely manner. I drove away very happy with how I was treated and with the car. Now I'm driving around with a beautiful and comfortable higher level Mazda SUV. I just need to remember next time to order a crossover or premium SUV.

Because of the wait they gave us a discount without even asking. Because it was thru Costco, they had to mail us a check. Gili, the manager, was fantastic about making sure the check was processed and put through. They were also able to put us into a nicer car, making our overall experience that much better on the island. Would gladly rent from them again and know I will be taken care of.

We waited in line and were helped by a younger female employee with black hair sitting to the left of Joelynn, on 2/20 around 6:15pm, had a ponytail, wearing a polo floral shirt and was not wearing a name tag but I believe her name is LANI. From the moment we spoke to her, she was extremely rude, dismissive, and unprofessional. Before even listening to our situation, she abruptly told us we needed to talk to the guy outside to create a report. We calmly explained multiple times that no one was outside, but she kept insisting in a condescending tone, as if we didn't know what we were talking about. When we went back outside and spoke to the employee there, he told us we actually needed to go inside. Before we could even respond, she came outside and started speaking to him in a very disrespectful and aggressive way right in front of us, telling him things like "you need to do your job" and questioning why he wasn't standing outside. It was shocking and uncomfortable to witness. No employee should be speaking to coworkers or customers like that, especially in front of customers. She then told us they were completely sold out and had no vehicles available, but eventually gave us an older Nissan Altima. When we got inside, it didn't have CarPlay, which made navigation difficult for our trip. We hadn't even left the lot yet and went back inside to ask about other options, but she was nowhere to be found. Thankfully, Joelynn helped us next, and she was the complete opposite. She was kind, professional, and understanding. She immediately found a Buick available and had us taken care of in less than five minutes. No attitude, no resistance, just excellent customer service. Joelynn and the gentleman outside were great. Unfortunately, our initial experience with the other employee was incredibly unpleasant. Her attitude toward both customers and coworkers was shockingly rude and unprofessional. Customer service should never make people feel like they are a burden for asking for help, especially when dealing with an issue Hertz instructed us to resolve in person.

We ended up keeping the third card and just put air but OMG... what a hassle and a waste of a few days of vacation. I will never rent from this Hertz again and do not recommend.
