The car was amazing and fit perfect for three adults and two kids, two large suit cases, two smaller bags and carrying items. We drove daily to town, restaurants and beach locations. We rented in 2022 with minimal problems. We had a flat tire which they were not easy to connect with regarding repair, nor were they interested in helping. We found someone on our own near where we were staying who kindly fixed it. We rented in 2023 and had a poor experience. Questions were answered rudely over email: "This quote can only be held until tomorrow. " " Tell us flight changes 24 hours in advance. We don't want to be bothered with all the changes. " A very small scratch was reported, "Be patient this will take some time. Report it to your insurance". A full month later, I was inundated with, more than once daily emails demanding payment before our insurance was able to fully comply with their demands, which they had no reason to do. Finally, Jeff the owner threatened me verbally as well as childishly calling me names over the phone. I was threatened with a lawsuit if I did not comply to his demands and was called "a jerk". I am unsure why I felt paying full price up front, six months in advance was a good idea, but I did it. I was also reading that they are not supposed to be parking the cars at the airport for pick up, but they violate rules (or laws) and continue to do so. They will tell you to say you are borrowing a friend's car. The owner acts desperate for money and takes it out on others. I'm pretty sure whatever money he gets for "damage" is not used to fix the vehicle. Who knows? Please stay away, you will be glad that you did. read more

I decided to try something different instead of renting from the typical platforms when booking travel. Knowing the difficulty the island has gone through with COVID shut down/quarantine restrictions (since my in-laws live there). I have to admit, I was a bit nervous because this company requires full payment ahead of time and if you need to cancel you do loose a portion of your deposit (unlike renting through Costco). I'm so used to booking through Costco or direct with Budget/Alamo/etc. The Pro's: #1 Bypass lines for car rental and go straight to the parking lot where you get instructions as to where it's parked. Do the same thing when returning the car. #2 The car is older and looks local (which is great for what all the research I was doing so I could blend in). I know that seems kinda crazy, but definitely noticed a difference (driving wise) compared to my last trip in shiny new car. Or maybe its because after last trip I learned some of the 'driving customs' there? Ok, lemme get on my soap box for a second. If you're reading this now let me pass on some wisdom.... - Be extra courteous, the traffic is nuts and others need to pull out into traffic and get somewhere too. - Sloooooow DOWN (I know it's hard, I have a lead foot naturally and I'm NOT in a rush) The speed limit typically ranges from 20-40 MPH and only a couple spots where you can go 50 MPH. If you only knew how many times I LOL'd with the shiny $$$,$$$$.$$ vehicles meant for the Autobahn I saw on that island in resort zones (eye-roll) . In all fairness, they can get to the beach faster compared to us who's stuck behind them at a crawl pace in traffic, right? - Contraflow (learn it and be extra mindful) because the first time driving in it will freak you out! #3 Friendly staff when booking. Be sure to follow there instructions which I never had any surprises. I knew that we pay for the onetime $15 parking at airport upon arrival. Not a big deal, compared to airport fees/taxes. Con: (none really, the car worked fine and great customer service) The only thing I was taken back was when I wanted to rebook for another trip the following month. The SAME car for the SAME amount of time doubled in price and only like $20-50 cheaper than renting from COSTCO. I know there's a shortage of cars on the island because many were shipped back to mainland during pandemic but come on double the price? I'm sorry but I made some calls to other local car rentals and saved my money. If I could part with paying double the cost, then I'm renting new hands down. Yeah, I worked hard for that cash and who cares at that point if I look like a tourist (now I know how to NOT drive like one) LOL I TOTALLY would rent from this company again (when I can save $ compared to national car rental companies) just say'n. To the newbies renting an older car on the island: Salt air and moisture beat up everything period. So please don't bash companies based off of "visual". We were very pleased with Rent A Car Kauai - the price was by far less expensive than any other rental option. It is also nice to support a local, family-owned business. The car was a good sized and although it was an older model Corolla, it worked fine. We did use AC and it was fine the entire rental time. Picking up/delivery was much easier than a regular rental company and it was great to not need a shuttle. There was a lot of paperwork to complete (including COVID vaccination information/proof), so that is the only thing you need to consider. WARNING*******DO NOT RENT FROM THESE PEOPLE******** Car: 2002 Ford Focus (red) -paid for 7 days of it ($23/day) They claimed that this car was in great working condition, they left me a voicemail saying that the rattling noise was nothing to worry about and merely the "shocks needing to be replaced but that is not urgent"! So naturally being a risk taker, we tried it out for 2 days but it soon became apparent that it was not safe to drive (see below). I was merely trying to support local small businesses- but in hindsight I realize this was a bad decision as when I contacted the company multiple times they were not responsive to our safety concerns. In fact they were very dismissive and were unwilling to switch out the car for a more functional version. Worst of all they refused to refund ANY MONEY even though I returned the car after 2 days due to safety concerns as the car was rattling louder and louder daily and shaking on the road. PROS: -they leave the car for you at the airport so its easy to hop in (but you're locked in to whatever they leave you with irregardless of your concern that the car is not in functional condition) CONS: -their old cars are the same price ($23/day) as a brand new rental car ($23/day) from Alamo or Budget - you can get much better deals on the costco travel website (which is what we ended up doing) -customer service: very dismissive attitude- we called them several times and emailed with our concerns- they returned our phone calls 50% of the time (even when I called during 8am-6pm hours). They kept saying that I had rented the car "as is"- and disregarded our complaints below. Let's just say we weren't given trustworthy dependable customer service. Usually businesses try to respond to a client's questions and concerns. But instead this is characteristic of their response to me "INCORRECT: You are not a mechanic so your diagnosis is based on speculation" I may not be a mechanic but I don't think its a sign of good car maintenance if the car rattles and shakes the whole time. -I expressed concern that the car didn't look like it would make it up Waimea canyon and asked what I should do in case the car broke down, they told me to read the handout (which I've attached) which doesn't address this concern. It basically felt like they don't care what happens and their attitude is we've charged your credit card for the 7 day reservation so we won't refund you any money - even if the car vibrates loudly and the shocks are rattling. So needless to say we returned the rattling car and ended up renting a new functional fully working car for peace of mind that it won't break down on the road! the car: - brakes pads worn, delayed response- which is dangerous on kauai's rainy streets - shocks need replacement evidence by increasingly loud rattling noise - poor suspension, bumpy ride - visibility in rear view mirror poor due to bad tint job of back window (blurred visabilty) see the photos I've attached - cigarette lighter/outlet non functional- so no luck in charging your smart phone in their cars (their response: was a brusque: "just charge it at home") While on Maui I also rented a 15 yr old car that looked worse than the red Ford Focus, however it ran a lot smoother and was well maintained and everything worked properly including the shocks which this company doesn't care to replace. read more

The good: The Owners of Kauai Rental Car were very friendly and pretty accommodating. We picked up our car from their home in Kapaa since we did not need a car for the first three days of our trip. They do offer airport pick-up & drop-off. They will even accommodate late/after-hour flights. You will need to arrange the car to be dropped off at he airport; extra fee's will probably apply. The bad: I was rented a 14yr old, 2000 Lexus that had over 105,880 miles and was charged an extra $25 for the "upgrade". That was fine; up until I picked up the car. This rental car was a beat up inside & out. On the outside, there was a crack on the windshield at eye level. There were dents and paint chips all over; plus a dog had clawed the paint above the front tire shaft. The inside, had an engine checklight on; had outdated car seats to accommodate child seats and their AC adapter to charge phones did not work. The car ran questionable at times. For sure, this car would not have made the up-hill trek to Waimea. We used another rental car that my family was using for that day. The main issue I had was that I was charged $39/day for a really crappy car. If they charged half of what I received then I'd probably just be grateful. This car needs to be retired and taken out of their circulation of rentals. Aside from that, I liked their customer service, I felt they were making an honest living and would use them again if I could get a decent car at a reasonable price. read more

Pro Tip: Make sure to get all the details about the car's defects before renting. We rented a 2004 Lexus SUV from Rent A Car Kauai. The staff was friendly, and the pick up and drop off at the airport was super easy. We knew we were renting an older car. We aren't prissy by any means, I drove a 2005 car until recently. But, the Lexus we were given had many problems that we were not informed of before renting: - One of the rear seatbelts didn't work - Sunroof didn't work - Car key did not have fob -- this was inconvenient for constantly getting our 14-month old in and out of the car - A ton of wetness and moisture collected on drivers side - Left rear light went out half way through our trip. - Tire pressure light was consistently on, even though the tire was OK. We expected an older car with wear and tear, but we felt deceived that all of these major defects were not disclosed to us upfront. We received a $25 discount for the trouble, but the whole thing still doesn't sit right with myself and my wife. Make sure to ask about all of the defects of the car you are renting before making a payment. Also, the car seat they gave us was very old.
