**Extremely Frustrating Experience with Hertz** My recent experience with Hertz has been extremely frustrating. I rented a Chevy Tahoe from Hertz on Saturday, August 15, with a scheduled return date of Friday, August 21 at 10:00 AM. I returned the vehicle as scheduled. On **Saturday, August 22**, I received a text from Hertz stating that the rental was **"overdue."** I contacted Hertz chat support, explained that the vehicle had already been returned, and was told to wait 24-48 hours because the return may not have been processed yet. On **Sunday, August 23**, I received another overdue notification. I contacted support again and was again told to allow 24-48 hours for the return to process. Then, on **Monday, August 24 -- the third consecutive day of overdue notifications -- I received an "URGENT" message** stating that the rental was still overdue. I contacted Hertz support again. This time, the agent asked me to fill out a form with various questions about where and how the vehicle was returned. I copied the questions into Notepad and started answering them. While I was in the middle of doing that, the chat session timed out and disconnected. So now I'm waiting yet again for another support agent. My frustration is with **Hertz as a company and the overall customer-service experience**. I returned the vehicle on time, contacted Hertz when I received the first notification, followed the instructions I was given, and waited the requested 24-48 hours. Despite doing everything I was asked to do, I was still receiving overdue notifications three days later and having to spend more time trying to get the issue resolved. And now there's another problem. I received my final receipt from Hertz today and noticed a **$127 "Fuel and Service" charge**. I filled the Tahoe up at a Shell station on Ohio Street shortly before returning it, and the airport was only roughly 10 miles away. The vehicle had a full tank when I returned it, so I have no idea why Hertz applied a $127 fuel and service charge. At this point, I am now having to dispute a charge for fuel that I had already purchased, on top of trying to get Hertz to properly process a vehicle that I returned on time. **My advice to anyone renting from Hertz: take pictures of your fuel gauge and odometer immediately before you return the vehicle, and keep your gas receipt.** Having documentation of the vehicle's condition and fuel level may save you a lot of trouble if there is a dispute later. There was also an issue when I initially picked up the Tahoe. Shortly after pickup, the **"Low Oil"** warning light came on. Hertz did eventually provide a voucher so I could get the oil changed, which I appreciate. However, I still spent nearly an hour sitting in a hot vehicle at a Take 5 Oil Change location in the Texas heat while waiting for Hertz to approve the service. I understand that problems can happen with rental vehicles and that returns can sometimes take time to process. What I find unacceptable is the **lack of communication, follow-through, and effective customer support** when something goes wrong. What should have been a simple rental has turned into repeated overdue notifications for a vehicle I already returned, multiple contacts with customer support, a disconnected support chat while I was actively trying to resolve the issue, and now a **$127 fuel and service charge that appears to be incorrect**. **This experience has seriously damaged my confidence in Hertz. I've rented exclusively from Hertz at Columbus airport (CMH) for more than 12 years and greatly respect the operation. But recently I have been charged for fuel, even though I've returned the car with the gauge reading "Full". For my Thanksgiving trip I had the car for three days, drove 140 miles, and filled the tank up before I dropped it off. The assistant checked my car in when I returned and said nothing about charging me for fuel - indeed the gauge was slightly over the full line, so I had no reason to think I was going to be charged for fuel, given that I was returning the tank full. When I got home, I saw Hertz charged me $6.99 for fuel. I got no response from Hertz when I brought this to its attention. AmEx, however, immediately credited my account for the full amount of the charge ($6.99). Granted, it's not a major issue, but it is a breach of trust between me and Hertz. It's just a guess on my part, but I'm guessing the vehicle's computer-based data-gathering includes data regarding fuel use and calculates a fuel charge based on that calculation - regardless of what the fuel gauge shows. I know I topped off the tank at the gas station, and I know the tank appeared to be more than full when I returned it. All I have for reporting it to the police is a mark on my own insurance record. This subsidiary/3rd party didnt offer a rental or damage assessment or a local agent to come out. Their damaged vehicle continued to drive on my street for 2.5 more weeks before returning to Ohio with really bad front end damage (pieces falling off). I returned the car with a full tank and was charged for gas. I rent 30 times a year with Hertz and I am done. The last rental I was charged $2400 for damages at DFW that were IA errors. They charge me a fee to clean the vehicle because of pet hair transfer from clothes. Thats part of something rental company need to understand if the rent vehicle because people have pets and they will transfer pet hair from there clothes to the vehicle. There is some obsolete information that Hertz is in the terminal - it's locations is the same as all other companies, in the common car rental center with the purple airport bus. Points off for not having an electronic screen for status renters. There is a separate line for status renters, and you get to the counter quicker, but you still must go through all the "Do you want insurance, do you want to buy the gas, do you want to upgrade?".......you know, all the stuff you already told them on line? That's the other star off. Otherwise, a car of the reserved type was clean and ready , return was easy. Rented noon on a Friday and returned 6Pm Sunday night. They refunded me for the days I didn't have it but refuse to refund me the late fee or wrong location fee even though I turned it exactly as my original agreement. I will no longer be renting from Hertz or its affiliates, including Byers Car Rental LLC(Columbus and Dayton Locations), due to their unjust practices. Byers Car Rental LLC, a Hertz System Licensee, is attempting to hold me responsible for a cracked windshield on a vehicle that was inspected and checked in by their employee without any issues. Now, I'm expected to prove I didn't cause the damage, even though the images they claim show the crack were taken days later, in a different physical location, and lack timestamps. On top of that, they've provided undated documents as "evidence." This is completely unacceptable. Their partnership with Purco Fleet Services feels like a coordinated effort to pressure customers into paying for damages they didn't cause. I've replaced a windshield before on a rental car because it happened while I had the vehicle, I have no problem owning up to something I'm responsible for. But this situation is pure extortion. I want Hertz, Byers Car Rental LLC, and Purco Fleet Services to be aware of how unfair and unethical this process is. NO DEICER IN CAR DURING SNOW, rented a midsize suv from Detroit in the middle of snow storm and first it was not cleaned from outside, that was ok but then sometime later we realized there was no deicer, had to stop after every few miles to clean, wipers were making it worse as the dried salt on screen made it impossible to see anything. This Hertz is pretty small as far as airport locations go. My big complaint about this location is that Gold members don't get to pick their car, they actually have a car assigned to them. Most Hertz locations now let you choose whatever car you want in the gold zone which means you can get a better car. I guess this one is too small to let you do that. The other thing that was weird is that you had to go into talk to an employee to get the keys instead of just going to get the car and they keys being in the car. Other than that, it's what I would expect from Hertz. The rental cars are in a parking garage you can walk to from the terminal. All of my points are with Hertz, so they're always my car rental choice. We had no issues with the car here. read more

If you are flying into columbus, have your eyes open. I rented a car for 3 days, paid for insurance and the gas plan. Tried to be a good little hertz customer. Dropped the car off at 5.30am on the day I said I would have it back . Hertz turned my 3 day rental into a 6 day rental. The email was very basic, here is your final invoice. Unfortunately for them, I look at the final invoice. 409$ became 888$ I called them and the first guy laughed and said that happened all the time, he would be happy to 'refund' me the fraudulently charged day. Then spoke to 'manager' Angela Lowe who offered me a rental coupon. har har. I told her she was going to set credit my card back to at least what I had authorized and told her I expected an extra day's credit since she had been caught padding the bill. I asked her if it was the case they didnt notice my car there for 3 days , or possibly they fat fingered the return date by 3 days.... Much more plausible... they didnt expect my to pay attention to the final bill. 3 weeks later, my card is still higher than what it should be. She had a chance to come clean. Had a last minute trip through CMH. Rented a manager's special as that was all that was available the day before. Got to the counter and there were a couple people in front of me. Line moved super quick. Hertz had many employees on duty which was great. In and out in less than 10 minutes and got a great car. Would hands down choose Hertz at CMH again. Well managed location! I arrived at Columbus Thursday and I was very tired. I'm a Gold Plus member and had been told by a Hertz representative previously in Pittsburg that I was Gold Plus, which was something I didn't even know. In any case, I stood in the Gold Plus line and was rebuffed by the gentleman at the counter. He said that he saw my reservation, but it wasn't made through Gold Plus. I informed him that a Hertz employee was the one who told me that I was Gold Plus. he said I'd have to get in the other line. So I went to the regular line a bit confused. When I was finally called to the counter (in the mean time, one of my co-workers texted me that our Zoom call, with all of the other managers had started and I needed to hop on when I was able), a woman named Leni found my reservation and also need that my number wasn't in the system. That was a bit confusing since I used the same system to reserve the car as I usually did. In any case, Leni did something that could have easily been done by the other person I'd spoken to in the Gold Plus line. She worked with me to get my number in the system (or back into thesyatme( and offered me an upgrade. Before leaving, I asked for her name as I think it's as important to reward great service as it is to report bad service. I got the car used it and returned it but the next day I got charged for $250($247.87). Called them and waited for 30-40 min just for a phone call since they are short staffed and Hertz can't afford more employees. After they answered the call they said hellos what car was it then hung up and pretty much said fk me. Terrible experience would never use them again! Accidentally lost my shirt and umbrella in the rental car. Returned the car at 1 am and called them when they opened up but told me they can't find a single thing. But of course this is Hertz and their greed is unbelievable. I'm told I have to put down a $300 deposit. I don't like this but it's my only means of getting to the areas of Ohio and W Virginia I need to go to. An Uber would be just as expensive. I ask to use debit since that's all I had on me at the time. No problem...but the deposit just increased to $500. WTF?! Now I know what the other 2 people I heard getting upset were talking about. All the other rental places in the Columbus airport are either out of business or out of cars, so guess what? Trip canceled. Finding the correct place to go was very easy, there was no line, and the check in/paperwork process was fast. The car we received was in good condition and served our purpose well. The return process was also fast and easy and I was not charged more than the promised amount. I was falsely accused of smoking in a car by Hertz at the Columbus, Ohio Airport. I don't smoke. No one smoked in the car while I had it. I didn't notice any smoke smell when I had the car. But AFTER I turned the car in I got hit with a $238 charge for cleaning. I questioned it and got back pictures of."evidence" that I had smoked in the car, but they were all low resolution and I couldn't really even tell what they were trying to show me. I recently rented a Chevy Equinox from Hertz John Glenn Columbus Airport location. For the first time in my Five Star membership life with Hertz, I needed to change my return location - Columbus, OH to Cleveland, OH. Learning that I need to go through the local franchisee, I thought this would be a very easy process - considering I am asking for a location about 90 miles away. How mistaken I was, my first call ended after being placed on-hold for 14 minutes and 38 seconds. I was able to immediately call back that location and have the phone answered within 2 rings. After explaining my problem to an agent I was surprisingly quoted 149.00 per day for a 4 day rental - an increase of 72.00 per day + taxes and fees. I was provided an alternative to return that car and get a "one-way" rental (funny the car I have is a Florida vehicle). Feeling this was a mistake or couldn't be true, I asked for a supervisor. I spoke to C.J. and received the same information. To my amazement, C.J. was not willing to look at my reservation or take in consideration my loyalty to Hertz and continued to Quote the $149.00. This issue put me into a very difficult situation, looking at my options I found a Full-size car on the Hertz Website for $72.00 - with a pick-up location at Columbus and Drop-off in Cleveland. I made this reservation and call C.J. back to change my drop off day and time. At first, he was trying to work this out (without request) to not have overlapping rental or costs. He made a statement that he felt he didn't do anything wrong. I shared, you may feel you did nothing wrong, but you didn't do the right thing for a customer. At that point, he reversed his position and was going to assure I paid full-price for both rentals. If he feels providing me with a discount or "no increased expense" is a benefit, it is not - my company is absorbing the costs. The real issue is, I will drive 3 hours round trip to return the current car to avoid, what I consider gouging, and pick up a very similar car. I also feel that there could be notes or edits to my rental(s) which could be retaliation due to this encounter, Or, there could be another sort of retaliation from the manager / location. If hertz truly cares about their customers, as the constant surveys I receive from my rental suggest, then this type of management interaction would be evaluated and/or changed to avoid future customer inconvenience that I have encountered over the past 2 1/2 hours. read more

Like several people posting here, I was also hit with a $400 "cleaning fee" on my bill after returning the car (with no mention of it at the time I returned the car). After working about a week to get any response from Hertz, I got the response that it was for smoking. I do not smoke and have never smoked in my life! And Hertz continued to claim that he charge was appropriate even though I explained I returned the car in the exact same shape as I received it in. I recommend renting elsewhere. read more

We got a phone call the day before we were to pick it up saying that they were closed on Saturday. They had 3 months to tell us this. If they had of called us in the morning, even by lunchtime would have been better. So we didn't get any car because they closed every location at 5pm except the airports. They wanted me to pay 1 and a half the price I prepaid. It went from $157 t0 $450. I of course declined. They asked me to call Priceline because they have my money. I do not advise renting from Hertz. A deer ran into the side of my rental car and the harassment has not stopped. First, they immediately went to a small chip on windshield when the car was returned. The deer hit the other side of the car. I think the chip was there when my rental started because the car was parked off to the side. This Hertz location does not have a Gold board so you will have to check-in at the Hertz counter. However, there is a dedicated Hertz #1 Club Gold line. Returning the car was an extremely prompt and friendly experience. I had receipt in-hand and was headed to the terminal in less than a minute. read more
