I am an express member and the perk of that is going upstairs, picking up my vehicle of choice, and leaving. There was no hassle, no up selling, and the workers were very friendly. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, my sister has been required to extend her contract by a couple of days. She is fine with paying additional daily fees, but they are unwilling to relieve the nearly $200 fee to extend. Over the phone she expressed, "so this could seriously affect my health and you don't care?" The answer was "nope, it's a contract." This seriously compromises the wellbeing of my sister and I am absolutely disgusted with their inhumane response and lack of commitment to the livelihood of their customers. Booked our rental car through Expedia for a total of $92, taxes, fees, and insurance included. When we arrived to pick up the car, we were greeted by a very nice, charismatic woman. She was very helpful, until it came time to pay for the car. All of a sudden the bill was $170 instead of $92. When we questioned the additional costs, she said it was for "airport fees" and that third party websites don't account for all fees, just some. I've never had "airport fees" when renting from any other rental car company through a third party website at this location, so this seemed strange. Then it came time for insurance. When we said we had paid for insurance through the third party, she started talking very fast about how the third party insurance is like "Swiss cheese" and that they rarely cover everything you need them to, so she recommended their cheapest option at $31/day!! Now the price with their insurance was looking to be $355. So how did we go from a $92 rental including all taxes, fees, and and insurance, to THREE HUNDRED AND FIFTY FIVE DOLLARS?? We said we needed a minute to discuss, so we stepped away and in minutes booked another car through National on Priceline. No issues or frills there, and we paid what Priceline had quoted us with no "airport fees." This company seems like a scam, and from other reviews we've read it seems like they pull stunts like this with 90% of their clientele. It's very disheartening considering they advertise themselves as a budget car rental company, and then they hit their customers (who probably can't afford it, hence why they're using a budget rental car company) with hundreds of dollars in hidden, unexplained, mystery fees. DON'T RENT FROM HERE!!!! I booked on Expedia to have a rental car ready for me at midnight when I came in. The first thing they told me as I walked in was.. "sorry, we don't have any cars at the moment, please come back at 8 AM". It didn't matter the fact I had prepaid for the car or had entered in my flight information when I reserved the car on expedia, they didn't have any cars! They told me that Hertz would be closing soon so if I wanted a car, I should go there. Apparently this isn't the first time this has happened since the employees were guessing out loud what each customer's reaction would be at the news. I ended up having to vent my anger and frustration at expedia for inconveniencing me and managed to not only get a refund but also a $50 hotel voucher. Good thing I called in the Dollar office with my cell phone to expedia, because expedia tried to get a hold of the employees at this place and couldn't get through. I was there with my cell phone in hand to verify with Expedia that indeed there were no cars for me even though I had prepaid. Unclear signs leading you where you need to go first at Port Columbus Airport. I went upstairs to the 2nd level WHERE THE SIGNS LEAD YOU TO. Optional additions to the car rental are said not to be optional, but mandatory. I contact the place by phone. I am told that indeed the optional additions are not mandatory. The kicker: I, the consumer have to go back to the airport location or any location to have the charge taken off. Nope. You should have taken the charge off on the phone when I was talking to you. The Dollar employees at the counter were great, the car was fine. Huge complaint about the rental agreement "administrative fees" for tolls. Apparently there are hidden transponder tolls in some states that you are not aware you have passed through. In our case it was Massachusetts. Our total toll amount was $1.85- our administrative fee from Dollar Processing Services was $30. Seriously? And we NEVER activated the system to have the transponder billed since we paid for all of our tolls as we went through. This is a disgraceful business practice that is quite frankly ripping off unsuspecting consumers. I think this should go before the Consumer Protection Bureau. If this has happened to you and you feel it's Something that should be regulated or done away with please say something. I am sure we are not the only ones to be shocked by this practice. We have rented cars for many years and we will never let this happen to us again. read more

I reserved my rental car with Dollar rental Columbus ohio airport (CMH) 2 months in advance. When I arrived they said they had to do a credit check on my account because I was using a debit card. I refused the credit check because I have my credit frozen. They asked me to unfreeze my credit. I absolutely refused. They wouldn't rent a car to me. Keep in mind my wife and I are both 66 years old. The debit card is FDIC insured the same as a credit card. They couldn't explain anything else just continually saying they had to do a credit check. This company is run by Hertz and how dare them trying to force people to have a credit card. No wonder Hertz filed Bankruptcy. Poorly run Company. I will NEVER try to rent a car through them again. P.S. We walked over to ALAMO and they rented us a car and took our debit card, no problems. read more

First of all, if you are thinking about renting it from this place? Dont do it! (Trifty and Dollar - same company). Well, last month I reserved the mid size car from trifty. The lady at the counter was somewhat helping a customer, who was already getting helped by other agent. I waited 20 mins before I got front of the counter. (Funny thing is that I was only one in line, beside the lady who was already getting helped from other agent). Anywyas, so I booked mid sized car and the agent tried to give me an economy - chevy sonic. I was like I booked the mid size and she kept insisting that, that's a mid size car. I changed it to Hyundai elentra (better than nothing). Last sunday, I booked managers special. I could've spend 10 dollar more for the week and got mid size but i was like why not take the chance and get managers special. I got to the counter and the agent told me that it only allow to rent out ford fiesta. They literally told me that system only allow for managers special deal is for smallest and cheapest car available or big car such as pick up trucks and that's it. Rented for 3 days from and back to Columbus International Airport without a problem. We arrived at 1am on a Wednesday morning and followed the signs to the bottom floor rentals desks, which were empty except for one guy at a different company. He told us for Dollar go upstairs. We found the check out counter for Dollar/Thrifty was also the rental counter in the wee morning hours, and a very nice attendant helped us out. They had our car ready and pulled out for us before we were even finished with the paperwork. We had no problems with the car and returning was also a breeze. Their communication is beyond crap. Not just with me as a consumer, but with each other. I called because I was going to be late to pick up my car. If you need to talk to someone, you can't talk to the people who are actually at the desk. The woman I spoke to via their 800 number was incredibly rude and unhelpful. Me: Well, do you have a partner or affiliate company that might have a car for me? Beyotch: Silence...then, "You could try calling Budget." Me: Could I come and pick that car up tomorrow morning? Beyotch: It's not available tomorrow. Me: Uhmmm...since I'm supposed to have it all week, how could it be gone tomorrow if I don't pick it up tonight? Beyotch: It's not available tomorrow. Me: Is there ANY car available tomorrow. Beyotch: Yes. Me: Like what? Arrrgghhh...and this goes on until I hang up on her. I arrive at the airport after calling someone to come pick me up...11pm and the Dollar Rent a Car counter is open. WTF? Me: I'm so glad you're open. I was told you close at 10:30. Counter dude: Who told you that? Me: Your rude customer service people on the 1-800 number. Counter dude: Harumph. They're just out there. They don't know nothin'. We're always open until at least 11:30. Off to the lot. I hand my paperwork to Metal Box guy #1. Metal Box guy #1: I don't know why they told you you could have this car. We sent the last one of those out hours ago. Me: Do you have ANY car? Metal Box guy #1: Lemme see. Metal Box guy #2 attempts to make small talk. It's too dark to see if there are damages and I'm too tired to care. The car is covered with bug residue and dirt. I huck my 50+ lb suitcase in the back. Metal Box guy #2: Where are you going? I look at him blankly. Metal Box guy #2: Are you going straight to your hotel? Me: I'm not going to a hotel at all. Metal Box guy #2: Well, maybe you should put your luggage in the trunk instead of the back where people can see it. I can do that for you. I look Metal Box guy #2 up and down. He's weighing in at at least 300lbs and is shorter than me. Me: If I wanted it in the trunk, I'd put it in the trunk myself. As I'm getting ready to go, I hear Metal Box guy #2 mutter something to Metal Box guy #1 and they both look at me and snicker. S'alright boys, this stellar brain power is perhaps why your job is sitting in a metal box at an airport all night long. Returning the car in Cleveland, the Dollar return is not in the main plaza with the rest of the rental car returns it's in another complex...and then you have to take two shuttles to get to the terminal. I travel pretty frequently and renting from this Dollar was by far the worst car rental experience I have ever had! First, the rental agent was very rude about insurance. My auto insurance plan, like most, covers me while I'm driving a rental car. This makes their extra coverage plans a rip-off. The agent informed me that if there was an accident, I would be responsible for a daily fee while the car was being repaired that most insurance companies won't cover. Total scam! I have never heard of this practice with other rental car companies. The next problem arose as I was exiting the garage. There were several scratches on the rear bumper. It is customary to inform the personnel as you exit to avoid being charged for any damages when returning the car. When I did so, the guy told me that all the cars were pre-inspected and wouldn't even look. In the end I wasn't charged, so it was ok, but it is very nerve-wracking to know they could decide to hold you responsible if they so chose. Finally, I filled up my tank before returning the vehicle. I had to return the car before anyone was working due to a very early flight. I was charged ~$30 to fill up the tank despite the fact that I had just filled it up near the airport. I called to complain and they basically told me it wasn't their problem. This was originally quoted as the best price for a week rental but it certainly didn't end that way. Do yourself a favor and pay a couple extra bucks to rent from Alamo or Hertz. It will wind up costing you the same in the end and avoids all the headaches! read more

Used dollar/hertz on my recent family vacation to Columbus, OH. Was given a Nissan Altima at 1:20 pm. Loaded all luggage and family into the car, and upon backing out of space, the engine lights went off indicating low oil/pressure. Unloaded car and walked family back to the counter. After about 35 minutes, they counter person replaced the POS Nissan with a Chrysler 300. Drove away from location almost an hour later. Returned the car at 1:55 pm, which would be 40 minutes shy of the full day. Asked for a receipt, but they "said" it would be immediately emailed to me. NEVER happened. Five days after returning home, I received my bill charging me for an EXTRA hour, saying I returned the car "late". I've got time stamped receipts, phone logs and plane ticket check in time and dollar/hertz still refuses to refund THEIR mistake. On another note, the car was filthy. Used mask under the seats, beer bottle and beer caps under the driver seat. Floor looked like someone with muddy boots cleaned them on the back seat floor mats. I wouldn't rent from this company again if they were the only ones with rentals! Should be a ZERO star for this review! read more

Oh man, where do I even start? My rental agent was super nice, no problems there. And the nice lady who found the keys did her job well. The problem started when my rental car broke down. Yes. Broke down. In Gahanna, OH. I tried to start it with that fancy push start crap and it turned over but never caught. It had 7/8 tank of gas and drove me to the restaurant just fine. I specifically requested a Jeep Laredo because that is what I wanted and the ONLY reason I went to Dollar over every other company. Never doing that again. I called the 24/7 roadside assistance and after being on hold for a few minutes, they couldn't find my "contract" number and said I wasn't a current customer. I told the guy that I definitely had a rental car from them that I was sitting in and was broken. . . and after a few more minutes of "searching other databases" he apologized and said they would get another car to me within 90 minutes. He also assured me that I would be given a discount when I returned my vehicle. I was around 15 (maximum) minutes from the airport where I received my rental car. 90 minutes later I had to fill out an accident report that was completely irrelevant to receive a GMC terrain. I was willing to pay premium to get a Jeep Laredo, don't give me some crap mini-SUV when I can clearly see online that you have Jeep SUVs available. I was NOT given a choice as to what vehicle they brought me. I tried to get passed it, but I barely drove the damn thing after that because it felt cheap and I did not like anything about it. When I returned the vehicle, the manager was a complete asshole and told me I could only get a discount if it wasn't my fault and I had to go down to some shady mechanics room at the airport with him to check. Maybe I watch too many movies or maybe I had bad experiences as a kid, but when a creepy old dude tells you to go to the basement of an airport with him. . . don't do it. No discount. Missed 3 house showings that were arranged by the bank for me on days I would be in town. Now I don't have a house to move in to unless I fly back to OH. DO NOT EVER COME HERE! The manager on duty around 4-6pm on 9/28/2016 was absolutely amazing and a godsend. I forgot to grab my beats bluetooth headphones (expensive) in the trunk and realized it when i reached the ticketing counter so i ran back and asked them employees to track it down. Nobody could find it but Jackie was the manager at the time and she was very nice and tried to be helpful by taking another look personally. She still couldn't find it so figured it had gotten stolen (can't really blame someone else for that any more than i should blame myself for forgetting). She called me right after i'd finished going through security because she found it and she ran it up herself personally all the way to security. Thats some above and beyond work. I rented a car with Dollar to drive from Ohio to Indiana for a graduation ceremony. Given my long drive ahead I was a bit anxious to get my rental once my flight landed. The car rental location was a bit tedious to find at first but after a long walk and a bit of wondering around I eventually found the office in the parking lot associated with Dollar. I assume it was a busy rental weekend because the wait was rather long and it seemed like the workers were scrambling. At one point they were giving off the impression that there were no more cars available so you know it was about to be a problem. About 45 minutes later I was finally situated with an associate that could start my rental process. TO this day I still don't understand the point of making a reservation if it still has you wasting traveling time waiting on car rental employees to assist you much less locate you a car. Shouldn't my car already be reserved or is my reservation number and pre-payment just a ruse to trap me with their promises of services. read more

I travel for work often, have for many years. Usually use National car rental and have never had any problems, this week I booked a trip that was short notice so no cars were available. I booked a rental with dollar car rental in Philadelphia for one day and had a terrible experience. First off the price they quoted me online was not the price when I got to the counter. The person at the counter was rude. I requested a toll pass (ez pass) and paid for it finally got to the rental car it was dirty. At the check out gate I asked where the ez pass was they said I had to go back to the counter to get it so did that. I then went on to my work duties when I returned the car I parked it went into the counter area they said I had to go back out and wait by the car until someone comes to check it, they did after 15 minutes. From the front desk, till my drop off it was literally nothing but a pleasure. I actually rented a GPS from them ( I KNOW I KNOW its 2014, but my mother made me). It ended up not working. Ultimately, we had made a reservation, using a discount code, and were not given that discount at time of pick-up. Not only was the desk representative harsh and unhelpful-- she would not allow us to pick-up the car the we had reserved 48 hours in advance. Furthermore, she made us start the process over, and informed us we could no longer use the discount code. This was all because we wanted to use a debit card and not a credit card. I rented a 7 passenger vehicle for a business trip a week in advance online and called in to make sure it was available and they said it was. When I went in to pick up the vehicle at 11PM they said it was not available and will not be available until 5AM. They also said they will not be able to guarantee the vehicle for me unless I rented a different vehicle while I was there. After all this I decided to rent the other vehicle to guarantee the vehicle I actually wanted and to come back in 6 hours. I went back at 5AM and the vehicle was not available! They also said it would not be available and unsure when I could get it and there was nothing they could do to help, after arguing with them for another 2 hours and 30 minutes I was able to get a refund and I never got the vehicle that I originally rented. They wasted my time the day I was suppose to pick up the vehicle, made me come back at 5AM and wasted more of my time and ruined my business trip. I will never return to this place and will not suggest it to anyone. read more

Don't bother with this company. Customer service is not helpful at all. I had to call twice to cancel my reservation, the first time the guy said something went wrong and to call back in 15 minutes. Then when I called again the lady told me it was canceled. I checked my Hotwire app several times throughout the day and my reservation was still there. I had to log into the Hotwire website in my browser to cancel it online. Then I finally received an email confirmation and my reservation is gone on the app. So obviously no one bothered to cancel it for me over the phone. I arrived from Los Angeles at 5:00 AM on a weekday. I got to the rental car counters at 5:30, but there was no one at the Dollar booth. I had been hesitant about reserving through one of the "little guys" and contemplated canceling my reservation to go with Enterprise -- when a woman working at the Thrifty counter yelled at me from across the room that she could help me with Dollar. I usually give people the benefit of the doubt, but this lady was SALTY. The entire interaction she was mumbling under her breath, clearly upset at having to work so early in the morning. I had to ask her to repeat her questions multiple times, upon which she snapped back at me. She didn't go over any information, rolled her eyes when I asked if I should give her my reservation confirmation number and didn't give me any instructions about returning the car. The car itself was FINE, but it was obvious they and not cleaned it between myself and the last person who rented it. There were little pieces of bramble/twigs all over the footwells and passenger seat. I had the vehicle for four days and returned it back to this same location at 4:00 AM. Because I wasn't given instructions on how to return the vehicle "after hours," I walked around the lot for several minutes, trying to find someone to help me. I had no idea what I was supposed to do with the keys or how they would know if I returned the car on time. Eventually, a friendly maintenance man told me to drop the key in an unmarked metal box by the booth. There was no one downstairs at the counter, and I needed to get going, so I dropped them in. I spent the next several hours traveling, anxious that I was going to get charged for dropping the car off late, or that they wouldn't know I dropped it off at all. Overall, it was a very frustrating and stressful experience. I will NEVER rent from Dollar again, and I suggest anyone reading this to follow suit. Don't be cheap -- it's both worth the rude customer service and lack of information. Just go with Enterprise. read more

They add whatever charges they feel like once your return the car - in my case they added a cleaning fees of $150 and they claim to have found cigarette butts and ash in the car after I returned the car - I quit smoking and this is not only an offensive charge for me but also a ridiculous allegation on someone that does not smoke anymore; also, I have visited them 5 times in the last one week - they never let the manager talk to me and are just gaining time thinking I would let it go. Please do yourselves a favor and never rent a car from Dollar at the Columbus airport. Worst rental car experience EVER! I travel often & have never had any issues renting a car from any other location. For starters, once I actually picked out my car it took them approximately 20 minutes to even have an attendant let me out the gate. In addition, they charged me insurance when I specifically stated that I have insurance through my current car insurance company. Their signature pad where you sign the contract is up on a high counter and being 5 feet tall I was not able to see exactly what I was signing, so their customer associate was helping me and basically lied in stating that I was declining insurance, which resulted in me getting charged an additional $136. I made the reservation on Expedia as part of a package; I'd never rented from Dollar Rent a Car before, but I figured rental car companies are all pretty much the same. (Protip: They are not.) The first sign that something was wrong was the guy in front of me, who was loudly complaining to an agent that his daughter had been ripped off and charged $400 to rent a small car for four days and had been told that optional things were mandatory, etc, etc. He was trying to get his daughter's money back; good luck to him! As I stood in line, I noticed that the other rental car desks were booking it and their lines were moving fast. Not in Dollar. I was the first person in line and waited over fifteen minutes, which isn't HORRIBLE, but Hertz moved through probably seven people in that time with the same number of agents. The agent was initially very nice until I declined the insurance, which would have doubled my car costs. My personal car insurance covers me in a rental car, so this wasn't needed. He said okay but put that I wanted the optional insurance anyway. I told him that I would not sign it; I did not want the insurance. He then tried to tell me that this was a required fee - nope, it isn't. I told him no, it is not required and I would not sign for it. He then became quite angry and insisted that I hand him my auto insurance card (which I did), which he looked over for a few minutes before declaring that it wouldn't cover anything if I was hit by an uninsured driver (untrue). I told him if he was unwilling to rent me a car without requiring the optional insurance, I would gladly talk to his manager. He then let me proceed before practically throwing the rental agreement in my face and telling me to "go upstairs." I've never been treated that poorly while renting a car, and I definitely won't rent from this company again. read more
