Staff was pleasant and helpful. Process is quick and easy. Cars are nice and well maintained. We made a reservation reservation online and received what we were promised. They were able to let us use our debit card due to not having a credit card, so their policy may have changed requiring only credit cards. Booking the insurance online is cheaper and I believe it would basically go through your own car insurance so you'll want to check with your insurance regarding that. read more

DO NOT RENT FROM THRIFTY OR HERTZ THE PARENT CO. We rented a car in Phoenix. The car was prepaid via a 3rd party. The agent at the counter in Phoenix lied about the car we selected and other things we prepaid for. For example, .... I told him to look at my paperwork that it shows I paid for a different drop off point already. He refused to look at the paperwork and just kept trying to up charge us. He then cancelled our contract with the 3rd party because we agreed to pay a small upgrade charge and we didn't agree to that. He then did a rebilling at the service counter in Phoenix and unethical behavior went on more and more. He said he would credited us for the 3rd party prepaid booking and a credit was posted on the receipt. When we received our charge card bill the credit was not deducted and we had several hundred dollars more he charged us. ThrifTy Corporate will not answer the calls, and there is no customer service to call. Run as fast as you can from this rental car company. read more

I accidentally lost my sunglasses($300 Versace Sunglasses) in there and called them back at the exact same day I returned my car(within less than 6 hrs) and they told me they don't have it. I understand workers there don't get payed much but stealing isn't the way to do it. read more

I've rented from Thrifty/Hertz at CMH several times this past year (probably a 20 year customer). I was accused of smoking in my rental car during a 1 day rental earlier this month (December 2024), and I'm a non-smoker. My wife thought the car seemed that it hadn't been cleaned very well, and the pair of glasses I found should've been a giveaway. A few days after returning the car, I received an email with an additional day rental charge and $400 cleaning fee from Thrifty. I contacted the local Byers Car Rental LLC Thrifty Licensee and the company representative refused to refund the charges. I've since contested my credit card charge and have reached out to the Ohio AG, and Hertz Corporate, am awaiting a response. I've also researched Thrifty CMH, and found other similar complaints to mine. I've since cancelled my upcoming rentals with Thrifty/Hertz/Dollar. Would not recommend them after this treatment. They falsely accuse their customers, then add fraudulent charges to their bill. read more

I will never use Thrifty again. I was accused of smoking in my rental car and I'm a non-smoker. I did not receive any final receipts until I contacted Expedia. I returned the rental on a full tank. They sent a receipt stating it was only at 81%. I kept the rental for an extra day because I called last night to tell them I was stuck in a traffic jam and would not make it back by 11:45 PM. I anticipated on paying for an extra day, but I now have a receipt that is charging me for $571. I booked on Expedia for $257. I should of only paid $257 plus an extra day. None of these charges were disclosed prior to renting or even on return. This is my first time and probably my last time I will ever use Thrifty for a rental vehicle. read more

I reserved a "full-size" car for my trip down south to Florida. Upon arrival, I was offered an V6 Impala instead (a significant upgrade) for the same cost. Nice! The next day, while rolling on I-95 towards Miami at 100 mp/h, the car started beeping: less than 2% oil life remained! Thrifty neglected to change the engine oil before renting the car out. You can guess how stressed I was. I made a beeline to the Miami airport and angrily asked for a free exchange at the Thrifty branch over there. They let me pick from their "full-size" inventory. I took off with an Altima SL. Once I got back to Columbus, they tried to charge me over 200$ over original the estimated fee (I didn't return the Impala with a full gas tank... for obvious reasons). More angry arguing and blaming ensued. Luckily, I was able to cut the final cost down to 40$ LESS than the estimated fee. Hats off to the understanding staff member. If you choose to rent from here.... - Make a Manager Look at the Car with You Before Driving off Lot. - Take photos! document, document, document. Normally when we rent a car a representative walks around the car with us to confirm all is well, no dings, etc. That did not happen during this trip. *Note: for the record, the dude who gave us the keys upon arrival was lovely. Upon returning the car the representative kept pointing to the top of windshield saying there was a chip, which I could not see (although I'm like 5' tall), my husband could also not see it. He just kept repeating, "chipped windshield...chipped windshield". Much to my chagrin I had to go the Karen route and ask for a manager. They said I had to fill out an incident report to "protect myself" from getting charged for a $400 windshield. The manager would not go and look at the vehicle/windshield with us and seemed to give zero shizzles about the situation. There was no incident. We used this car for four days and barely drove it. 60 miles total which included round trip to/from airport to downtown hotel. It was parked almost the entire trip in a secured parking garage. Whatever he was seeing was there long before we ever picked it up and it was not noticeable for four days. So sketchy. We had such a great trip and this was our last experience. Really bummed me out. Hertz used to be my go-to, but now that they've acquired Thrifty, I guess I'll have to go the Enterprise route. If they try to charge me for a windshield a lawyer will be involved. :( read more

I read the other reviews on here after I reserved the car, so I wasn't looking forward to picking it up. They did try the hard sell on insurance, even when I pointed out that I had talked to my agent and that I was fully covered by that and by the credit card I used. Then they tried to get me to upgrade by saying "it'll be the same price." Well, no, when I went to sign it was quite a bit more. When I pointed this out he acted confused. The pickup and return staff were much more helpful and honest. Upon our return, there was a fuel charge even though I declined that expensive option and had just filled the car. This was removed. The car itself was fine. Rates were maybe a little lower than Hertz, but next time I'll pay a bit more for better service. read more

I was harangued for a good 15 minutes about insurance, with the clerk trying to make me feel like an idiot for waiving it (in spite of my being covered by my own policy and my credit card). Complete and total lack of support. Returned a car after a few days, leaving my keys in the drop box during overnight hours. After getting no receipt for the transaction, I was told by customer service to wait a full 7 days then call back. We're now 9 days in, and my card has not been charged and there is apparently absolutely no record of my car rental beyond the confirmation number. I was told by customer service that they cannot assist me and the only way to get help at this point would be to call the Columbus location directly. Nobody picks up the phone after endless rings. Complete and total lack of support, & the "customer service" representative at the toll free number treated me like I was four years old ... kept repeating that I had to stop in at the counter to adjust my reservation, because the location is a "franchisee", even after I said I could not get to the location before my current reservation expired. She also said that Thrifty Corporation has no phone number at which the franchisee may be contacted. Exactly how stupid do corporations think people are, anyway? When I attempted several times to call the phone number for the location (from my reservation email), the phone is endlessly busy. Only 1 star due to the fact it won't let me put 0. Due to an emergency I booked a flight from Florida to Ohio, reserved my car online and got on the plane. I arrived in Columbus only to be informed i could not use my debit card to pay for a car for 24 hours, for some reason there is no other rental option at the airport that early in the day. I tried talking to a supervisor and was unable to make any exception to whatever "rule" this is. I also was unable to find any mention of this in my confirmation. I ended up taking an uber 100 miles to see my mother on her deathbed. So thank you thrifty for causing me to miss precious time with my mother who passed not long after I arrived. read more

Reserved my car online, counter guy wasn't too friendly, nor was the hidden charges of down payments and credit checks that "will effect your credit" because I used a debit card, that is also a credit card. Why the hang up over using a card that will immediately give a company money as opposed to credit which holds money in limbo, I don't get. But once we got to the car it was smooth sailing. Check in was a bit confusing because of my 6:30am flight, and no one being at the car check in. There were no signs of what to do in that case. I just left the keys in the car and hoped for the best. Presumably since I have received my final bill with no extra charges everything is all good. But... this process should be much clearer. read more

I read the other Yelp reviews, and boy am I glad I am not the only one. Like others, I received a 20-30 minute spiel on how my insurance won't cover me in a case of an accident (total lie - for TX drivers, insurance follows the driver, not the car), Ohio is different than Texas (like no duh), I needed to be protected against dings and scratches, and I needed to REALLY check the car so I wouldn't be charged. We asked the guy, "Is this really necessary?" He responded, "I am obligated by law to go over this with you," but an acquaintance who rented from Budget said she didn't receive any sort of lecture at all. I declined the extra stuff they wanted to charge, so maybe the blond haired guy felt offended - who knows. He also asked for my insurance's collision coverage amount because "I HAVE to have this in the system." Luckily I knew this information, but I have NEVER been asked this before, and I rent a car on average at least once a month (now it's more like 7-8 times a month). The way he asked this was question was just plain rude, as if to say, "Well if you're not going to covered by us, I'm going to ask you a question you won't know the answer to." Sorry, I knew the answer, so you failed to stump me. I will say the rate for the car was the cheapest I could find, which is why I chose them. For two days, it was a total of $65 or so and some change. Other car rental companies, like Hertz, were asking for as much as $45/day. We ended up with a Ford Focus as a compact car, which was a nice car. Checkout went smoothly, and I wasn't suddenly charged for anything extra or dings/scratches (not that I had any). The blond haired guy working the desk around 9:45PM on 10-Sep-2012 really needs to change his attitude towards people. If you don't like being nice, don't have a job in customer service. I was told to return the rental car on a full tank, but do to time constraints I was unable to fill the car all the way back up. I had returned it with almost half a tank left, then later found out that I had been billed an additional $92.41 for it. I agree that I should've paid some type of fee, however, paying that amount for something that would've originally costed less than $25 is outrageous. I sent an email to them asking to see if I could get a response as to why they charged so much, but never word back from anybody. read more

Your employee tells me that the policy book I have in my email from Thrifty USA is incorrect? How is that possible? Because it says I can pay with a debit card as long as I have a utility bill. Apparently that is incorrect but my BOOKING VOUCHER, the official document that you sent me, says that I need 2 forms of legal documentation. My Drivers License and my utility bill. But the guy at the counter says unless I just got off a plane I need a credit card. I'm in my home city, no problem, I'll ask someone to help me. But no, the reservation is canceled in 1 hour, and it is Friday at 8am, no on is coming by 9am. So he tells me I can call this number to get my refund for the first half that I already paid for the car. CONSUMER ALERT. Never ever use the prepay option for your rental when reserving your rental through the Thrifty website. You will 100% regret trying to save some money because the headache the follows will not be worth it! I am a long time user of Thrifty because their rates simply are usually lower than the competitors. Their customer service sucks but I go into realizing I won't be getting royal treatment but I sacrifice that for the affordable car. So when I booked a car for an upcoming trip I expected business as usual except this time when I was looking at quotes for the rental on Thrifty's website there was an option to prepay the rental upfront and doing so would save us $75 to $100. I have prepaid hotels and other travel related things through Hotwire and Priceline and never had any issue. And in this case I was going through the Thrifty website and given the option by Thrifty to prepay and being a long time customer I trusted the process 100%. So I went ahead and prepaid the rental. A few minutes later I got a confirmation email from "Thrifty USA" everything seemed fine. The first inkling that something weird was going on was I looked at my bank transaction history the next day and noticed an international service charge in my account. This transaction from Thrifty originated in Dublin Ireland. I immediately contacted my bank and informed them I was in the U.S. and purchased a rental car from an American company I did not understand the international service charge. They explained that possibly Thrifty online payment service was based out of Ireland although they had never seen a Thrifty charge come through that way. The charge was only 4$ so I accepted this explanation and thought I was all set. The next indication something fishy was going on came two weeks prior to when I was going to pick up the car. I went to the Thrifty website to when asked to put in my confirmation number I entered the one I received from the email and it said "reservation not found!" I immediately called Thrifty and explained I wanted to confirm a reservation for a car I had prepaid. This time when I gave them the same confirmation number they found it. I told them that being my first time ever prepaying a rental through Thrifty I wanted to call and make sure what additional charges or fees I may expect to pay at the actual rental counter although I had already prepaid the rental.The representative put me on hold for 5 minutes then came back saying they could not access the payment information or inform how much I could expect to pay when I went to pick up my car. What!? I asked her why not. She said I would have to contact the company whom I booked my reservation through to get that information. I sternly explained to her that I booked the reservation through THRIFTY and Thrifty's website this wasn't making any sense to me. She put me on hold again then came back and said I'll have to transfer you to the department that handles our online reservation however they are closed now but I will give you their number and you can call them at 8am. The suspicion was now extremely high. I asked if this was a number to Thrifty or a different company. I asked her several times and she would not give me a straight answer. She said just call them when they open and she ended the call. I immediately called the number she gave me I did not wait until the morning and low and behold they were open. But even more shocking is that it was not Thrifty. It was some company out of Ireland called CarTrawler. I gave them my confirmation number and they had all my reservation information. I immediately told them to refund my prepaid rental 100% and. If I didn't get a prompt refund I would report the transaction as fraudulent to my bank. They canceled my reservation. A few minutes later I get a confirmation email from "Thrifty USA" saying my rental has been canceled. I then googled CarTrawler and have read endless horror stories from people who can not get their money back for rentals they prepaid. I got lucky in the fact that I found out two weeks before my trip that I was dealing with a 3rd party and not Thrifty. However other unsuspecting consumers are not finding out until the day they go to pick up their rental car and Thrifty tells them they can't find their reservation, that they prepaid through a 3rd party even though they began their reservation on the Thrifty website and Thrifty sends you to the 3rd party site with the same design and color scheme as their site. If they "can't find your reservation" they make people make a new reservation on the spot which will be far more expensive than a reservation made in advance. At the same time CarTrawler will not give a full refund if you cancel less than 48 hours in advance and also if you don't pick up the car at all they will charge you at least 3 days of your rental period even if you never got the car or if Thrifty turns you away or makes you get a new reservation. So, I arrived at the airport and they notified me that there were no cars available. Wow. Instead, they had me move to the next counter (Hertz) and rent a car of the equivalent class. They said they would reimburse me the difference and gave me an "offsell certificate." Since my reservation was prepaid, they owed me the full amount for my Hertz rental (over $300). The attendant took a copy of my receipt and the certificate and said that the office would submit the paperwork. I skeptically requested a copy of the certificate because I don't trust anyone when it comes to money and reimbursements, I've been through it before. Guess what? After three weeks (which is how long the certificate said to wait for a check), I call Thrifty and they have no record of the paperwork. I had to resubmit everything. Not feeling like a Blue Chip member We reserved a Full Size car in Columbus, OH for 5 days. We have rented from Thrifty quite a few times before, mostly in Honolulu. The sign in the airport instructed Blue Chip members to go directly upstairs to pick up a car. We went upstairs and saw my name on the board, went to the kiosk, and waited to be helped. The agent said that we needed to go downstairs to sign a contract for our car. I had thought that being a Blue Chip member meant that that had already been taken care of, as it had been in Honolulu in the past. He took my information and went downstairs himself, coming back about 10 minutes later, and said that I needed to go downstairs to begin the process. I went downstairs, and that agent couldn't find my reservation, even though my paperwork was in order and I had a confirmation number. He said that he could rent me a car for the price I had reserved online, but it would be a new rental. Just then, he found my initial reservation. I was relieved, but not inspired with confidence with this Thrifty branch. I was told to go upstairs and pick out a Full Size car over by the minivans. I looked around for the minivans, and found the sign that said Full Size SUVs, which had some Ford Fusions and SUVs parked there. One car smelled strongly of cheap perfume. One smelled of body odor. One was a small SUV but we felt it would get terrible gas mileage, and we had a lot of driving to do. It felt like the Three Bears. We finally settled on a black Ford Fusion. I checked with the agent at the kiosk and he said that no, we couldn't take that one, that we could only take a Full Size car. I pointed to the sign that said Full Size SUVs, and he said that that was SUVs that were Full Size, even though there were non-SUVs parked there, implying that they were the Full Size cars that I was supposed to take. Very confusing. Very irritating. I was getting really irritated by not being able to just walk down a line of cars and pick one out and go. He pointed to the one car that I could take, a white Impala. Fine. We took it and left. I also left with the feeling that the entire process could have been streamlined by the initial agent finding my reservation and telling me which car, the one and only car, I could take. After flying all day, I thought that the rental car experience would be easier. I didn't feel like I got the Blue Chip experience. Probably the only things that would have been worse would have been if I had had an accident, they gave me a car that broke down, they didn't have a car available for me, or they overcharged me. The white Impala was fine. Return of the car was eventful, and the agent apologized for the problems I had when picking up the car. Overall, everything was good except for the experience with the guy at the kiosk and figuring out which car I could take. I would highly recommend Thrifty, but maybe not the one in Columbus, OH. read more

We had a reservations 5 months in advance. Once we arrived nothing went right. They were rude and unapologetic. They did not have the car I had reserved. The bill was twice the reservation. When trying to ask quesitons they were not helpful. I have called three times and each time I am told a supervisor will return my call, but that has not happened despite my over 2 hours on the phone and a week of waiting. Run from this place! I would never rent a car from Thrifty again. The guy who was helping me with the rental was trying extremely hard to sell me insurance. I kept telling him that I decline insurance, but kept insisting that the mergence between Hertz and Thrifty requires me to buy insurance, which was nonsense. I kept telling the sales person I have AX which covers for the rental and he was telling me in OH AX is for secondary insurance. Very bad customer service. I was overcharged on insurance after I already purchased insurance through Priceline.com. Cleaning fee of $38 a day?! Unbelievable! I was visiting my mother out of town and brought flowers to the hospital, a few petals (literally 4) were on the carpet in the backseat. I was definitely intrigued by the very low ($12 a day) rate for the weekend, but if I would have known it was going to be a hassle and waste of my time and money I would've gone elsewhere. Hassled for 20 minutes with insurance, prepaid gas, upgrades (which I initially accepted when told 'just $8 more!', then found out that was $8 more PER DAY, a vehicle I could have had online at booking for $6 for THE WEEK!) . Highly disappointed for the first time in our lives dealing with thrifty rental car. We showed up with our confirmed reservation on Saturday at Columbus airport. We were to pick up our car at 6 PM and the desk was going to be closing at 7:30 PM. When we arrived there was a little sign that said they had closed at 2 PM. We called the local number and they said they didn't have any cars. And then there was no one to help us until Monday morning. I called them this morning, and they said there's absolutely nothing we can do. They don't have any rentals for the entire week. After two hours of phone calls and speaking to many representatives, they said that they would put some points into my thrifty account, of which I do not have that information on vacation. What are you supposed to do if you fly into a town and there's no rental car available for the week? I feel like they should've been way more helpful to try and find us a car somewhere! read more

I have used thrifty before, but my trip last month to Tampa has ended that. Maybe states are all different but the Thrifty at the airport is rediculous. I reserved online a mid-sized SUV. When I called to tell them my flight was delayed and I would be 6 hours later than expected I was told I would have my reservation canceled. When I got there they charged me $35 a day for an upgrade to a Corolla which normally is less expensive than an SUV. Then they asked me if I wanted insurance showed me 3 plans, none with a price. I asked about the basic, she added it then told me the total was $696 (the SUV btw total was only $406). I said I didn't want the insurance but surprise it was not taken off. Then a month after being home I get a bill for unpaid tolls which I paid in cash. ( and can Not prove of course, who gets a receipt for tolls) Not only was I charged for tolls they added $9.99 each for admin fees. I also never had a rental charge a fee for the space they use for their cars at the airport ( literally hundreds). I was in Orlando last year and paid $310 for a week and an SUV. I booked a rental car from Thrifty, Columbus, OH Airport location for $117 for the week. When I got to their location to pick up my rental car, they said that the price had doubled. When I argued with the unpleasant woman behind the counter she said "You didn't put down no money now did ya?" I said no, but I still had secured a price and had booked the reservation and was on time to pick up my car... She clearly stated that If I didn't take the car for the new price of $234 a week that she would rent it to someone else. She ruined my 2 week vacation, I paid the $234 for one week and found a flea bag motel by the airport to stay at for the second week. I rented from this location on Mothers Day weekend. The customer service is to be desired. After you spend a very long time in line to get the car, you go upstairs. Then you just go to the car. Other car rentals in Port Columbus bring the car to you. There's no inspection of the outside of the vehicle or nothing. Also when you return it you just pull into the lot, there's no way to get a receipt, especially if you are leaving on a 6am flight out. When I left the car, I left my receipt on the seat (I saw other cars do this), and now I check my credit card statement and I've been charged more than I was quoted. I will be calling to find out the hidden charges. As mentioned already, they are less expensive than other rentals but I'd rather pay more and get a receipt upon return than experience this system again with Dollar/Thrifty. read more

We arrived at Columbus Airport on time from California, 6:30 PM, and went straight to the Thrifty counter to pick up the car I had reserved weeks ago. They didn't have it. Not only did they not have it, they didn't have ANY car. It was myself, my husband and our adult daughter. We planned to drive through 9 states to visit friends and family and return the car in Virginia. They offered us a flatbed pickup or a panel van. What?? Oh wait. They said they would throw in a GPS for free. Uhhh?? What?? I explained I had reserved a mid size car, a Nissan Altima, and a pickup or van didn't work obviously. She said they didn't have any cars. What?? After much disbelief conversation on my part, she offered to go to the "other" car rental places in the same counter space. Surprise! Only Hertz had cars and wow! Did they have cars! Eight or nine rows of them. But no other rental place had them. Hmmmmm.....She came back to say that yes! They had a car they could rent but it would be 400 more than we were going to pay for Thrifty. Well, we took it because we had no choice, but after driving away I thought about how convenient it was that Hertz had sooooo many cars and Thrifty, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise.....had none. I booked my rental car with Thrifty through Cartrawler on line. I was quoted $328.84 at the time of booking. My card was charged at booking for $229.97 and $98.87 was to be payable at the counter. Ultimately, I paid Thrifty $439.17 and I paid Cartrawler $229.97. My total out of pocket was $669.14, significantly more than I was quoted on line. I contacted my credit card company to dispute the amounts charged but neither Thrifty or Cartrawler wanted to discuss this matter with me. Since I had booked and agreed to the terms on line for Cartrawler and signed a rental agreement at the Thrifty counter neither party would take any responsibility for the fees I incurred. I paid an additional $340.30 for an on line Thrifty car rental through Cartrawler. I cannot recommend either of these companies. read more

Stay Clear of Thrifty Car Rental at the Columbus Ohio Airport-CMH! I booked a rental in August of 2015. All in was to be approx. $ 238.00. Once there they told me the car I would get would be a sub- compact, which didn't sound too good. The lady at the counter told me she could offer an upgrade with a discount of only $ 11.00 more per day. It takes Forever and there were people behind me. It was not until the 2nd when I noticed that I had been OVER CHARGED. I went back to the airport to discuss and was told by a manager there was nothing I could do. The lady was there also and I asked if she remembered me but she did not tell me $11.00. Not only did she lie right to me and her manager in sight but when I asked her name she told me A.F. And that she would NOT give me her name. Pretty sure I can find that out when I contact Human Resources at Thrifty Corporates and the Attorney General of Ohio will be notified as well. Worst customer sercive ever. They will bounce you around from counter to counter and automated phone system to automated phone system. DO NOT forget any of your belongings in one of theor vehicles!!! You will never be assisted in getting your items back. By far the worst experience Ive ever had with any customer service!!! read more
